Tonight's Lineup

Okay, so it's confirmed: Alexander Semin, Shaone Morrisonn and Sergei Fedorov are out tonight against the Ducks. Jose Theodore will be in net, which likely means Brent Johnson comes back tomorrow night against the Kings (though Coach Bruce Boudreau did not confirm this).

Barring any last minute changes, the lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Laich-Fehr
Steckel-Gordon-Bradley
Brashear-Nylander-Clark

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Sloan
Erskine-Jurcina

Some other notes and quotes:

*When I asked Boudreau if Semin's injury was more serious than originally thought, he said: "It's still day-to-day. It's a pain thing. When it gets better, he'll be able to play."

*When asked about Fedorov and Morrisonn, Boudreau said: "I'm hoping one of them will play tomorrow and maybe two. I'm hoping all three before the trip is out."

*No, I still don't have a camera. But for all of you goalie mask nerds (I'm one, too), I took a closer look at Theodore's new mask. It's mostly metallic blue with red bars. It's got the Reebok logo on the forehead, the "weagle" on the chin. On one side, there's a bald eagle with its claws digging into the White House. On the other, the eagle is gripping the Capitol. It's also got the Lincoln Memorial.

It's one of the most detailed masks I've ever seen. It also doesn't look like he's going to wear it tonight. He said he still wants to get used to it.

Theodore also told me that the only hockey memorabilia that he collects are his old masks. He said he's got about 10, including his junior mask and the ones he wore in international competition.

*Your eyes are not deceiving you. Alex Ovechkin is using a new stick. Although he has a contract with CCM, he's been using a Bauer stick since he returned from Russia. He said he's waiting on a new batch of sticks from CCM. But something tells me if he keeps scoring at his current clip, he might not be in a hurry to switch back.

*According to the O.C. Register's blog, the Caps will face Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller tonight instead of J.S. Giguere. Hiller shut out the Kings on Sunday. Also looks like winger Rob Niedermayer will be back in the lineup.

*Boudreau said he believes tonight's game is the most important game of the trip.

"To me, the first game is the most important because it gives you the momentum," he said. "It gives you the opportunity to have a great week, or you always fighting from behind."

That's it for now. If anything changes, I'll update before the game.

Awesome - if getting on a line with Clark (1pt) and Brashear doesn't get Nylander on track, nothing will!

Poor Sasha. So it's a strain? He better get back in soon to regain his goal and point standings!

Posted by: Caps1Fan | November 19, 2008 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Nylander's game is puck control...and he does it as well as anyone. But there are no style points in the NHL. Without a wing that can capitalize on his puck control strengths, Nylander is just skating figure eights. Jagr had that chemistry with him, but no one in our current lineup has developed it. I think Flash would have been the likely candidate, but it doesn't seem to have materialized. So, much as I hate to say it, I think he might be worth more in trade than he is on the ice (but we better get good value back).

Posted by: Baildog | November 19, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

I like Hiller, he's gonna be real good one day.I'll be glad to see him get lit-up tonite though!...two right handed goalies face each other, you don't see that too often.

Posted by: fullright | November 19, 2008 4:07 PM | Report abuse

@DrAdamson: Everyone's been smelling a trade for a while, but my personal take is that Nylander won't sign off on it in the middle of the school year. If he does switch teams, he will do so when he can move his family to their new home when he doesn't have to pull the kids out of school - 5 of 6 are school-aged - to do so.

I would expect a trade to come either over Thanksgiving weekend, or over Christmas-New Years-winter break if it comes this year at all. He has a no-movement clause, and it's very likely because of his large family that he has it. I can't see him agreeing to a trade that would have him packing up and moving while the kids are in school.

Wow Clark still on the 4th line even with all the injuries - get rid of him!

Posted by: lylewimbledon | November 19, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

I forgot totally that they have Pronger. Pronger and Hedican apparently don't mix too well so we won't see that pairing. Either one will be difficult to play against. It could be an interesting game tonight. Hope Brash's hand is better - he may need to use them.

Yeah, about any consideration for wanting/hoping that Fisher would come here in a trade:

OTTAWA -- Forwards Mike Fisher and Chris Neil each will be out of the slumping Ottawa Senators lineup for several weeks because of injuries.

Fisher, a center, strained a ligament in his right knee during a shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Monday night, the Senators' fifth straight loss, which dropped them to last place in the Eastern Conference. The injury will not require surgery.

Rumors floating, if your into the rumor thing. Nylander to Chicago a done deal once Chicago frees up "cap" space by trading a goaltender. TSN reports.

Hockey Buzz has the CAPITALS in the running for Mat Sundin......that would be interesting if it were doable.....
I don't see it happening , but it's nice to think about the possibility.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 19, 2008 5:00 PM | Report abuse

Sundin to us? Do we really need another center? I'd rather see us try to upgrade D, but we'd have to shed $ and find a home for Juice or Mo.

Little bit off topic, but of interest...

Yeah, Canadiens fans are stuffing the ballot box (and the NHL disallowed some votes), but what's up with Semin's votes?

Look at this (specifically Semin's totals)...

Caps rumors from HockeyBuzz

The Caps and Canucks are closing in on a Nylander deal. The Canucks have had interest in Nylander for quite some time.

Alexandre Radulov is campaigning to return to the NHL and to be moved to the Capitals. As is Afingoenov.

Posted by: ChrisAm | November 19, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Hockey Buzz = rumor AIDS. Do not ever quote that place here, or anywhere. It's completely fabricated. Seriously. No more of that Capsfanmiss. Strike one.

Posted by: ThisGuy | November 19, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Wait, Nylander really going to Blackhawks? Why is Tarik not writing anything about it? who would the Caps get in return??? ahhh I need to know!!

Same to you ChrisAm.

Come on people you should know better by now.

Posted by: ThisGuy | November 19, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

I hope that was a joke, ChrisAM, because I laughed out loud when I read it :-). Not only Radulov, but Afinogenov, too, huh. I know our Jerseys are red, but DAMN.

Who would we want out of Vancouver, though, outside of Luongo?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | November 19, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Balldog about Nyls, however, i would not characterized as he skating doing figure eights (it is kind of a demeaning term, in my opinion), as much as he controlling the puck and looking for one of his less skilled teammates to jump into the play. As Semin said, and I paraphrase it, "what is the point in giving up the puck for a lucky shot or a dump-and-chase if you have control of it?"
I don't know why he is not playing with Flash, they seemed to play well together early on, and then poof!! - without reason for the breakage that I could tell. Obviously, BB sees something I don't see or maybe GM wants to unload his salary while he can get something in return, but I don't think anyone could ever convince me that this guy is not a top player in the NHL.

Posted by: x1232 | November 19, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: lylewimbledon | November 19, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 19, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

I LOLed at the Radulov comment too.

No, seriously. I'm not hell-bent on knowing where or who yet, but I do smell a trade in the offing and I can see why they would based on what several sources have offered. Myself, I'd want a good veteran S@H D, but that might hamper Sloan/Lepisto/Alzner in the fall. Also, if they do trade for a veteran D, that puts the writing on the wall for both Morrisson and Jurcina.

Posted by: rachel216 | November 19, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

I just looked at it too.

On 11/15 he had 74,979 according to a screen shot from this website: http://www.faniq.com/blog/NHL-To-Investigate-All-Star-Voting-Fraud-Montreal-Canadiens-Fans-Are-Cheating-Blog-14233.

I ran a "Leaders" a few moments ago and his line read: SEMIN, Alexander 73825.

That's a LOSS of 1,154.

So do tell how this is even remotely fair?

Caps win by 3.

If I had a choice of those players out there, I would rather have Shanahan than Sundin.

But, in reality, another good d-man would work.

Either way, we are doing fine with who we have. We just need to get Feds and the Siberian Nightmare (aka Watch the Semin-ar of Goals) back.

What a waste of Nyls's talent on 4th line. Unless deal has already been made and they don't want to play him much so he doesn't get hurt? Interesting how he started really strong with Semin, and then with Flash. But then he started getting short shifted regularly and getting worse and worse line mates and never given a chance with Ovy. Yet Ovy and Backs who had just as long or longer a slump at the beginning always got their ice time and first PP etc. Just smells of coach not wanting him here to me and trying to drive him to agree to trade.

Posted by: CapsRockTheRed | November 19, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

CapsRockTheRed - Nyls had missed most of the season last year. So, the coach probably doesn't want to 'over heat' him. Either way, Ovechkin and Backstrom are stars, Nylander is not. Nylander has been turning the puck over a lot and he has a terrible +/- like he did last year. But, you could be right about the coach not wanting him here, however, I don't think BB would do that. If Nylander doesn't want to go, he doesn't have to. Only time will tell.

I'm really happy to see Fehr on the second line and really happy to see Sloan in the second pairing.

About Nyls:
He's exasperated with the team. It is a team without a coherent system and without compatible sets of talents. He COULD work with Flash, he SOMETIMES works with Green in setting up Green's pinch plays, but Gabby can't set the team up to run that game all the time. That's not how Semin is scoring goals. That's definitely not how Ovie scores goals.

Nyls wants to play on a team with fewer weapons so he can dictate the style of play. He is not happy here. This has nothing to do with last years injuries. I bet Nyls himself planted the Vancouver rumor. If he landed there he'd be happy about it. Unfortunately he'd probably like to play with all those Swedes and Mathias Ohlund is about the only quasi-useful part we could use from that team (they wouldn't trade him anyway).

hockeybuzz is talking about this because people are willing to listen. A Nyls move is a believable story at this point.

Personally I can't wait, and I hope it IS the 'Hawks. Like I said, Aaron Johnson would a choice pick up: young, currently underpaid, and a solid defensive performer.

Wow, WCAPS1. I think you are tweaking. I dont really see a problem with what bagasome's doing. This is a community of shared interest. Dude is letting people know about his totally pertinent blog. Maybe it's good. Maybe it's not. But it's non-commercial and germane.

Beyond that becomes spam methinx

Posted by: austinsteve | November 19, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Well, its the first time I've noticed it.

As to the commerciality of it: it's on blogspot, and he only has two little sad ads on it (that's not uncommon these days). That combined with the fact that he seems to have actually composed frequent, lengthy and recent updates on it says that he is not making a lot of money on it. He's just a fan.

But that's just my interpretation.

Drinking Partner, ThisGuy etc

I posted the other HockeyBuzz rumors as a subtle reminder that the Sundin to the Caps rumor should not be taken too seriously. Subtlety on this blog might not be the best approach.

And why is WCAPS1 so worked up about Bagasome? The guy created a blog and wants to promote it. Whatever. Does it really matter that much?

Posted by: ChrisAm | November 19, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse

@ChrisAm,

Not too worked up, here. Just feel that it is somewhat inappropriate for someone to, for all practical purposes, cut and paste information onto their website and, repeatedly, advertise their own blog on the site that the cut and pasted from. (How's that for a run-on sentence.)

Time for me to let it go. Point made.

Jay Bouwmeester, D, Panthers
PR: 1.44 Pct. owned 90.3
The Panthers' ability to score is a lost cause so far this season. Only Columbus has a lower conversion percentage on the man advantage and only New Jersey has had fewer chances. Bouwmeester's prime source of production for the past few seasons has been setting things up on the power play. Not only has he been failing to do so over the start of the season -- with just six assists, four on the power play -- but now he has lost his job because a healthy Bryan McCabe has donned a Panthers jersey. In just seven games, McCabe has already tied Bouwmeester's 17 games' worth of production.
Verdict: For real. And we can officially stop waiting for Bouwmeester to break out until he finds a new team.

No, it's sad, and kind of a disgrace. A weakly worded memo is all the league can manage. Someone's going to have to get a broken neck from a 'clean' hit before it ends.

The league either needs to shut up about headshots or make them reviewable up in Toronto by the guys sitting around between close goal calls, or at least punish them with some consistency.

I meant the Tocchet remark.

OV goes after Pronger, you gotta love it!

Posted by: majiksea | November 19, 2008 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Don't mind that guy over on the right.......

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | November 19, 2008 10:40 PM | Report abuse

I blame that goal on poor defense by Greenie.

Posted by: tess2201 | November 19, 2008 10:40 PM | Report abuse

Holy crap, Ryan Getzlaf is Simple Jack...

Posted by: Section117 | November 19, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

I have a feeling not many people will want to hear what I have to say, so I'll let it go for now, but thats 2 for 5.

Posted by: majiksea | November 19, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

that was all nylander, he was dogging it back on that play and didn't cover getzlaf

Posted by: Moose33 | November 19, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, because poor marking is all Theodore's fault.

Posted by: Section117 | November 19, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

getzlaf gets laugh

Posted by: yrb1 | November 19, 2008 10:44 PM | Report abuse

But Greenie bobbled the puck on the blueline and let the Ducks get it into the zone. And yes, Nylander was dogging it too.

Posted by: tess2201 | November 19, 2008 10:44 PM | Report abuse

You mean something about how Nylander just kind of hung out and watched the player go right by him and get a goal?

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | November 19, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

This is why Erskine sucks! But dont tell Ted this....he's the BEST!

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 19, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

That tripping penalty? Theodore's fault.

Posted by: Section117 | November 19, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

They're playing as lazy as the game I was at Saturday. A brilliant offensive explosion, and nothing since.

Boudreau needs to skate the sense of entitlement out of this team and get them working for 20 minutes out of 20.

Posted by: KurtNYC | November 19, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

don't mean to pile it on, but there was a major defensive lapse on both those goals against

Posted by: honed | November 19, 2008 10:47 PM | Report abuse

@majiksea

mixed feelings on that... nothing much any goalie could have done on either goals... but yeah, it's 2 for 5.

Not many people will want to hear this... but I wish Pronger was playing for the Caps.

Posted by: mauree | November 19, 2008 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Who was the Dman who tried to 'catch' the puck with his glove but basically set it up for Anaheim to score that goal. Was it Green or Schultz.

Whoever it was deserves a hell of a beating for that stupid ass mistake

Posted by: goskinsgo | November 19, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I would have no problem with Pronger playing for the caps, that guy is a great defenseman

Posted by: Moose33 | November 19, 2008 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Nylander should not touch the ice again tonight. First he taken a penalty in the offensive zone while on the penalty because he got stripped of the puck...then he does not do anything that even remotely resembles backchecking that cost us the 2nd goal. I know it has been seven years since he threw a bodycheck but a stick check would be nice.

Posted by: ph0082 | November 19, 2008 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Schultzie bungled the puck, but Poti got caught pinching and Nyls was a step behind so many to blame except maybe Josie

Posted by: meagle | November 19, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Agree...Nyls taking another lazy behind the play hook...no wonder he is in BB's doghouse.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 19, 2008 11:03 PM | Report abuse

Yikes, the ice is really yucky in Anaheim. I guess it doesn't help the outside temperature is in the 80F range.

Happy birthday. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 19, 2008 11:38 PM | Report abuse

Thanks :)

Quick question... Does being excused from the circle count as a lost face-off?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 19, 2008 11:39 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov is doing well -- Clark isn't as invisible as he usually is, he's got an assist and a couple of chances.

And "produce stand". That's got to be the color comment of the night.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 19, 2008 11:43 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't think so..? I think the face-off just "didn't happen".

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 19, 2008 11:43 PM | Report abuse

Thanks! That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 19, 2008 11:55 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I guess they'd have to award a win to the player who didn't get thrown out, and that just doesn't seem right. At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 19, 2008 11:57 PM | Report abuse

OHGODNO. Mike Green is not returning tonight. That's ... bad. Really bad.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 19, 2008 11:59 PM | Report abuse

They might just be playing it safe. No need to press the panic button right away.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 20, 2008 12:01 AM | Report abuse

Emergency test just as Washington goes on the power play. Comcrap, I am going to kill you.

I hope so, jmu. We can't afford to lose him right now.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 20, 2008 12:06 AM | Report abuse

Especially with Mo and Feds out for a bit, its important to play it safe with the dmen we've got left. We can get a Bear Dman out to CA, but it will take time.

STECKS!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 20, 2008 12:13 AM | Report abuse

Get the dog and the shotgun. Too many Ducks in this place!

Let's go boys! You blow this and you're going to look worse than...than...somebody.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 20, 2008 12:25 AM | Report abuse

joking, I don't advocate gun violence.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 20, 2008 12:30 AM | Report abuse

teehee jmu_capsgirl

Well anyway, it looks like we got this one. Ugly, but they don't paint pictures on the scorecards. Two points for the good guys!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 20, 2008 12:37 AM | Report abuse

So apparently it's just the two of us that didn't notice there was a new thread. Wooo. :P
