Tonight's Lineup

There are no lineup changes to report. Again, Brent Johnson will start in goal for the Caps and he'll face Columbus rookie Steve Mason, who will attempt to lead the Jackets to their first victory over Washington since 2000.

The Caps are 4-0-0 in their past four trips to Columbus and their seven game unbeaten streak against Columbus is their longest current streak against any team.

Here are the Caps' lines:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr
Laich-Steckel-Bradley
Brashear-Gordon-Bourque

Defense
Lepisto-Morrisonn
Alzner-Jurcina
Helmer-Sloan

Be sure to check back later for some post-game notes and quotes.

Not much neutral zone trap so far -- nice to see an up tempo game

wow...our cox channel 74 picture on the HD tv in springfield looks awful...like they're playing the game outside in a whiteout blizzard.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 29, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

For some stupid reason CSN+ doesn't work, why can't the Caps be on CSN, nobody wants to watch the Wizards...

pachanga74:
It's not Cox - it looks bad in Comcast land, too, because it is not being broadcast in HD. I'm with Jim - I miss HD; I'm officially spoiled.

Wow - are we ever being out shot. Come on guys - turn up the heat!

Anyone know what they've got hanging off the glass? I keep thinking a glove or something is on the ice.

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

well, it's official!

JIHAD ON THE WIZARDS!! or at least on the dope who made the decision on what went where.

OK, so no worries. taking the first 20 to wake up. I'm cool with that.

Hey folks, what did I miss so far? Looks like we are 1-0 down after 20.

After a lot of catching up, couple of comments:

Mauree: You have EXCELLENT taste in beer. Fancy a night on the German Markets in Manchester?

Steve_R: Give it up on the "Erskine as a forward" tip. Only an idiot is going to respond to that sort of comment! :)

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Dave:
What are you doing here? I thought you were otherwise occupied this weekend? BTW, you missed a big one last night!!!

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, we thought the same thing about Brad's car Re: should have had a Penquins sticker. But I think they showed that at the last Rangers game.

Why do we keep having so much trouble getting/keeping the puck in the scoring zone when we are on the road?

Glad it is not just my old eyes or beer consumption that is affecting the picture.

I kept thinking I was seeing a glove or helmet on the ice too. Think it is a camera.

We better bring it on in the second.

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 29, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Whooooo! CapsSkins that is a quality link. I raise my Makers Mark to you sir/madam.

Just seen a replay of the Jackets goal, huge slice of luck involved there. Confident we can pull this round.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

CapsSkins: FiOS viewers in AA/HoCo can use QAM 122-4001. I'm watching the game on FiOS right now, you just can't use the set top box to do it.

Just joining the game now; listened to the back half of the 1st period on the radio on my way home from dinner. Now about to die of food coma. Guys, the picture sucks on CSN+, but nobody here should be taken by surprise. Plus, as compared to last season, we've had waaaaay less games on the plus. You can't have 'em all (yet).

For anyone who is still having trouble finding the game, look for my post on the previous thread. I ain't reposting it here. :P

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 29, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

unleash CSN+!

I dont know if Im hammered, or if the feed is about as sharp as 1985.

I wonder is Green is throwing a big bash at his place with the medical ward that is known as the Washington Capitals.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 29, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

The Caps were so close in the second PP -- lots of pressure.

Love the sweet ride segment!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 29, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

It seems like Nylander is afraid to shoot the puck. He's passing a little too much for my liking.

Posted by: elicea | November 29, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

boo,

Got back from the Big Smoke (i.e London) about an hour ago after watching England have their arse handed to them on a plate by a frightening New Zealand team (rugby if anyone is following).

I also bumped into Kelly Brook (model, ex girlfriend of Jason Statham).

The only disappointment of the weekend? The Flight of the Concords didn't sing the NZ anthem.

Game on!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

CSN playing the Wizards in HD over the Caps, is like choosing to play Booty Call 2, instead of The Godfather.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 29, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

@Dave

hehe I wish man... no I'm not a beer expert, but that one is my favorite.

Down 1 - as predicted they are putting up a fight. But our boys can do it :D.

Dave:
So I take it you had fun, despite the beating? How was the haka? BTW, I don't know who Kelly Brook is - should I? Nonetheless, what do you mean you bumped into her?

Boy, Alzner was holding that hand funny do we think he is OK?

Greg:
You havin' one for me?

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Mauree,
Well that is a first class choice in my book.

Are we playing 5 forwards on the PP? CB and OV were on the points then.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

The boys are flirting with a loss here.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Paulaner. Which plays tricks on my mind letting me think Mo and Jurcina are playing good, in contrast with all common sense :p

Posted by: mauree | November 29, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Boo,

Yeah it was good thanks. I thought people may have heard of Kelly as she dated Billy Zane and Statham (Lock Stock & Snatch). She was in the exec box next to us and I just said a hasty hello in the corridor. Google image "kelly brook". S-wing!!

The haka was awesome. The English response (from the crowd) was good too. The NZ'ers are a class above. Just hope they never learn to skate as they can hit like nothing else.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Greg - you're a good egg!! ;-)

Anyone think we will convert a PP tonight? :-/

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Ah Paulaner. I don't think I've had that since last October. Perhaps we should get reacquainted.

Nice shot by Ovie, hopefully the next one goes in! :)

Nuts -- great shot, better save

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 29, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Wow!

Mason's glove was hot then. Its coming though.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Johnson's keeping the team alive. Caps need to get more pucks at Columbus' netminder, and finish.

Posted by: elicea | November 29, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mauree | November 29, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

It's okay everyone. My sixth sense says that the Caps still have one period to play, and Ovechkin hasn't had his say yet.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 29, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

mauree:
Yup - on the replay I said, "Oooh, Alzner was out of position ..." He'll regret that one.

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Ouch, that was not a good time to concede. Actually think BJ is giving up some pretty big rebounds tonight.

Boo,

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Caps always have games like these, being terribly outshot, no energy, giving up a bunch of shots, and unable to play well on the road... this sucks...

Let's go Caps PP!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 29, 2008 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 29, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Dave:
LOL!!! Good for her!! :-D

Posted by: Boo- | November 29, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I like the start to the PP. Let's start off the 3rd period with some more of that.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 29, 2008 8:37 PM | Report abuse

@rachel

I don't think it's that bad... we were very close to score a few times, and put a good pressure in their end. And remember, the Jackets are desperate for a win, they're giving all they got.

A quick goal can launch us back in the game. Or maybe it's the beer talking :p

Posted by: mauree | November 29, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Next goal is gonna be big.

I must admit, our boys don't look very hungry tonight. The BJ's on the other hand....

I hope the 3rd brings a different mindset, or we're in trouble tonight. What's up with tanking on the road???

Please guys, have a couple for me and remind me of what i'm missing :(

last night at verizon i said something i've never said at a game before..."i'll have a pop, thanks."

Posted by: lamplighter1 | November 29, 2008 8:41 PM | Report abuse

A game like this is bound to happen-- especially when you consider the following obstacles:

1. playing without 7 guys who were on the opening night roster.
2. playing a 3rd game in 4 nights; and,
3. playing on the road again.

The good news is the Caps aren't out of it yet. Let's see what Alex & co. can do in the 3rd.

Posted by: Terptwin | November 29, 2008 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Does Joe B realize that he is not broadcasting for Versus tonight? He does not have to be a complete homer, but can back off just a little on all the Mason love.

We are making Mason look a little like Nabokov. Maybe we can get three on him in the third. (Let's just hope we do not let them get two more).

If we can score on the tail end of this power play to start the third I think we are back in business.

Well if we lose, we're still 3 points up on the Canes. If we win, then we have one kick-ass comeback and we're 5 points up.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 29, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

hey...we scored three in five mins against the Wild right? we can do it again.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | November 29, 2008 9:20 PM | Report abuse

For all you Cap fans who don't see the urgency in winning our road games consider this,we will not go undefeated at home and when we start losing a few at home and these non-efforts keep occurring on the road, we will not be in first place and we will not even make the playoffs. This is the example of no character. It can't be Ovechkin all the time. Can't Brashear bury a wrister? Can Nylander even shoot? Backstrom's wrister does'nt fool anyone either. These are the problems that I see when we lose. The defense is horrible.

Ya know...I just think we ran into a hot goalie tonight who made a pile of ten-beller's, so I can accept this.

now...ergo- no we wont go undefeated at home. we also wont loose every single road game. stuff happens. we regroup and go on a roll again.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | November 29, 2008 9:28 PM | Report abuse

ergoroc:
I see the urgency in winning road games - I see the urgency in winning ALL games. It's just that if we have to lose, I'd rather do it on the road than at home. Hey, most of us thought we didn't have a shot at winning the last two, but we did. Given that, our continued injuries and the the standings, tonight's loss is not huge.

Ok, definitely going to bed now - 2.30am! There was a time when it was usual for me to be up this late on a Saturday night.

That was never a 3-0 game. Much closer than that.

Ah well, I guess cheef, wendel and cstanton will be back tomorrow.

Remember that was our 3rd game in 4 nights with 7 starting regulars out of the line up. And Karl A didn't fnish that one. I hope its not serious.

In two games with such a weaken team we are .500 with 3 goals scored/3 against. I think we all have taken that before the Habs game.

Good night.

Oh well, we've got Fla and the Isles at home for the next two so hopefully the boys get rested and regain that sense of urgency.

BJ played very well but it is obvious we need the regulars.

G'night all!

My prediction, you will see JT in net for 10-15 straight games (barring injury)

We will start to play better on the road, as our injured players start to return.

You have to remember we have 7 regulars out of the line-up. You can get short term energy from call -ups, but in the long run it is difficult to over come this type of roster turn-over for a long period of time.

Here is to hoping the King is not too bad, Green and Alex come back for next game.

I believe we will get our stride (our road stride) soon.

In low def, I couldn't tell if we won or lost.

Who's #61 for us?

lol Dave :)

It upsets me a little that this was the exact same team that played so well yesterday. There's definitely an attitude problem here... but yeah our boys were tired too, I can accept this.

What I can't except is that CLB had played 3 in 4 as well so I don't buy the tired bit.

let's look at the upside: we got to watch Bradley's ride video.

Opps...long night...accept..

Also...guys, this is the same team that beat the 2nd best team in the E.Conf. last night so the injury excuse doesn't fly.

ralCapsFan

that's where the attitude comes in. We played the same amount of games... but they LOST 3 out of 4, we won the last two. They were desperate for a win, we were not.

Columbus did what Caps did to Montreal last night. Mason was definitely the difference maker. If he hadn't made some of the saves he made, the results would be far more different. That said, I thought Caps put fort a fair effort. Not their best, but hey, you win some you lose some.

The positive I take out of this is the fact that Caps never gave up. They played 'till the clock hit zero. In the last dying minutes of the game, they put tons of pressure on Columbus' D and Mason. Unfortunate they were shutout, but it happens.

@Mauree

Good point dude. But you have to give me...we could've won this one true? As BB says...4-8-2 does not make a great team.

I hear nothing but excuses. "we won't win them all but we won't lose them all" Reality is that we are a home team. Period. Can't get it up on the road. And shut up about the scheduled. You think the other teams don't play? This is inexcuseable. These road losses are so lame if you are not hip to what is going on in the locker room than you are ion denial. Instead of chalking up the next 2 opponents as wins(home games) lets look at the big picture, We are 6 points from the bottom. I guess you all think that the team will win 10 in a row at the end of the year and qualify? That will not happen again. Where is the leadership? Is Brashear the only one allowed to drop the gloves? I want to drink from the cup as much as the next Caps' fan, but we are a long way from there. Being healthy will help, but you cannot use that as a excuse because these problems started on opening night. No point in singling out players at this point. they know who they are and they know they are not contributing. Beaudreau sees what is occurring and I think a trade is coming.
