Tonight's Lineup and Pre-Game Notes

Jose Theodore will get the start tonight in Carolina, and the latest injury (Eric Fehr, shoulder) has forced some changes to the Bears' Caps' lineup. Here's what it figures to look like tonight against the 'Canes:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
(Back together again)
Fleischmann-Laich-Nylander
Giroux-Aucoin-Gordon
(Giroux and Aucoin were linemates in Hershey)
Brashear-Steckel-Bradley
(If it ain't broke ...)

Defense
Alzner-Jurcina
Morrisonn-Collins
Lepsito-Helmer

As promised, here are some additional notes and quotes to get you ready:

*The Caps can extend their lead in the Southeast Division to eight points.

*Asked why he's going with Jose Theodore over Brent Johnson, who was outstanding in Toronto, but appeared to tweak that nagging hip injury, Boudreau said: "Theo gets a shutout, then the next game the team plays bad. I don't think he should get the blame for the Florida game. [Johnson] plays good for two games, and he has a couple of aches and pains. Theodore deserves more opportunity to play. I'm not a guy who sends guys to purgatory based on one game. I'm going to give him a chance to work his way out of it."

*Eric Fehr is "better", but clearly not ready play. "It was still sore," Boudreau said. "But he was confident that it was better."

*After getting goals from defensemen Karl Alzner and Milan Jurcina in Saturday's 2-1 win in Toronto, Washington defensemen have either scored or assisted on 48 of the team's 85 goals this season (14 goals, 41 assists).

*Even with all the call-ups, Hershey matched a franchise best 10 straight wins with a 4-2 win over Hartford last night. The Bears can break the record today against Norfolk.

*The Caps have recalled nine different players from Hershey this season. Quick, name 'em.

*The Canes are banged up, too. Frantisek Kaberle, Cam Ward, Dennis Seidenberg, Niclas Wallin, and Tim Gleason are hurt and expected to miss tonight's game.

*The Canes are 0-1-1 under new (old) coach Paul Maurice, who was hired on Wednesday to replace Peter Laviolette.

*Carolina has yielded the game's first goal in 12 straight games, eight in a row at home. The Caps, meantime, have scored 31 first period goals, the second most in the league.

*Asked about the surprisingly solid performance by his patchwork defense last night in Toronto, Boudreau said. "They played above the blue line very well. That's something we talk about all the time. We don't want the other guys penetrating, so instead of retreating we attack. They've all done a good job of catching on, even though we play a similar system as Hershey. They've really caught on really well."

*Boudreau's take on all the injuries? "It's a lot," he said. "But we're not going to get any crying from Carolina. They've got three American League defensemen in there tonight. You read the paper and Florida has four American League forwards. It's this time of year."

"It puts pressure on [injured] guys to get back when they see other guys having success," Boudreau added. "It makes them want to get back quicker. They know and we know that we can call up people from Hershey."

*Alexander Giroux got the call over other Bears, including Oskar Osala, because of his veteran status, Boudreau said. "Giroux is the leading goal scorer in the league. As a veteran, you give him the respect that's due. He deserves the opportunity in this situation. Oskar will get his chance. It's doesn't hurt him, just like it didn't hurt Mike Green and Jeff Schultz and all those guys to play down there for a period of time and learn what it takes."

Check back later for some post-game notes/quotes/thoughts.

Big division game... Hostile arena... Alzner, Lepisto, Collins, Helmer, Giroux... This is Aucoin's old team...

Can't wait...

I wish johnny could have gotten the start
He played great last night.

Posted by: ILikeLaich | December 7, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Is brent johnson injured or could he have started today?

Posted by: O-V-P | December 7, 2008 3:49 PM | Report abuse

JSchon:
I heard from Dave that you, Leeguru and Steve were the 4th line tonight - is that true?

Posted by: HeyBooBoo | December 7, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse

yeah...theo plus that arena tells me some baaaad things are about to happen. i'll be on the edge of my seat, closing my eyes every time the puck reaches the defensive zone.

Posted by: jess4caps | December 7, 2008 3:59 PM | Report abuse

let us not forget that we are missing the HURRICANE SLAYER mr alexander semin. seriously, that man is the proverbial large land mass to any tropical storm staal and co. throw at us... too confusing an analogy?

I'm good for 3 or 4 shifts or 1:46 toi which ever comes first.

Can I skate with a large trash can?

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Its the 2nd game of a back-to-back. Do you know if the caps flew in after the game or early this morning??

IT had to be very tough to play less than 24 hours LATER.

Don't be to suprised if we come out flat

Posted by: DCSPORTS | December 7, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

If the caps win today, they deserve the 8 point lead.

I usually don't believe in any excuses, but tonight everything will be up against it for the caps

1) All the injuries
2) Carolina at home/caps flew from toronto
3) The AHL D guys handling an agressive forechecking team like carolina after playing a lot of hockey recently
4) Theodore's inability to make a huge save on a consistent basis

you mean half empty arena

Today's game is broadcasted by yahoo and athe, both very good streams.

mauree:
So you approve of the new screen name? :-) BTW, if Greg does not stumble on your cat again, would you mind sharing a streaming link for the game?

"Hostile arena?

Checking the stats for last night, the 'canes only filled 75% of the arena for a Saturday night game against Philly. I assume this afternoon all the Carolinians will be watching football!

I'm excited for Giroux but I gotta ask; Why not Bourque. I know he wasn't stellar in his previous call-up, but he was supposed to be our number one forward call-up like Alzner was supposed to be our number one defensive call-up (salary cap permitting)

Posted by: dcfury | December 7, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Boo, of course, "HeyBooBoo" is nice. Was it easy to change? And by the way, why not TV?

Posted by: mauree | December 7, 2008 4:47 PM | Report abuse

If Johnny is hurt, we should have called up SV instead of going with threeormore.

They wiped out my account so I had to re-create it (so yes, it was easy). I had requested it a long time ago, they just never did it ... they decided to do it when I needed access to the boards the most. ;-) RE: why no TV, because I am out of town. :-(

Posted by: HeyBooBoo | December 7, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

ah I see - if you have decent connection it should be no problems, those are good streams.

Anyway, let's keep expectations low (Canes are desperate and we're decimated) but hopes high :D

Okay...I haven't posted since last season.
But the new nickname "threeormore" has me cracking up.

do you think he is hurt?

Hey! They stole *honk honk honk*!

Posted by: mauree | December 7, 2008 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Bruce said it perfectly. His patchwork defense attacked the other team in the neutral zone. Something that our regular defensemen - Green, Schultz, Erskine simply refuse to do. I hope the 3 of them stay injured the rest of the year. I'd rather see a 2-1 win than a 5-4 loss.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 7, 2008 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Did I hear Joe and Locker say that Lav is gone? I had not heard that ... darn vacation - I have no idea what's going on!

Posted by: rachel216 | December 7, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Well, there goes Carolina's streak of giving up the 1st goal of the game

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | December 7, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Well we didn't need that. At least it wasn't off the first shot.

@ Ravhel216-
I looked up what "10 bell" meant. It's a tribute that was started in boxing to celebrate the career or accomplishment of a fallen/dead boxer. Like the final count out for the guy. It's meant as a tribute like a 21 gun salute.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 7, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

Lamp,
Tell me about that - no slowdown in evidence over this side of the pond, despite what the media tells us.

WELL. YOU HAD TO PLAY THEODORE WHICH MEANS 3 GOALS, AND YOU HAVE TO PLAY JURCINA, WHICH MEANS STUPID PENALTIES. WE SHOULD OVERCOME THIS BUT WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET 3 TONIGHT.

Ok since no one seems to think my idea of a min GP to play in the playoffs would stop players from sitting out with minor injuries ..Why doesnt the NHL put in a NFL rule stating "If we cut you! We dont have to pay you!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 7, 2008 6:21 PM | Report abuse

It seems when Caps don't get to a goalie early, he gets stronger throughout the whole game, it doesn't seem the Caps will figure Leighton out.

Posted by: HeyBooBoo | December 7, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

It's mindblowing how awful Ovechkin is on penalty shots. I'd like to see him just wind one up from the circles and try to drive it through the goalie's mask.

Dave,
My guess: that Jag is about 150,000 fully loaded vs close to 300,000 for a fully loaded DBS. Johnny's not making minimum wage by any means, but he's also not making #1 money either.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 7, 2008 6:45 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know - could Bruce have called his timeout before the penalty shot at the end of 2? Ovie looked gassed and I was wondering if you could take the timeout there to get a fresher AO on that shot.

GO CAPS!!!

I'm hoping for Caps in regulation though so I can get to bed! I have to be up in less than 6 hours!

any jose three-or-more fans out there? this loss is squarely on his shoulders. those were 2 of the weakest yet. can you believe? where is his focus???? a liability. he will be gone after this year. what a joke. he was fresh and can't even pick up his team. JOSE THREE-0-MORE. Granted Lepisto got abused behind the net, he should have that covered, its goalie 101. Not the first time THREE-O-MORE has failed to fundamentaly mark the post. And let's not forget Mr Rebound on the first goal.

Why is Sami always all alone behind the net, where is the help? It's like he's left out on an island all by himself. I said to myself the best thing would be to at least get one point....now we have 10 losses and that doesn't look good. We should be much better that 15-10-3.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 7, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Man. That blows. The boys seemed to play so well and then just kinda looked like they were playin for OT there.
Whats the solution on the JT issue? Is it roll the dice and pray for the best until all the guys come back?

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 7, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

I thought the Caps played a good game tonight, the Dmen moved the puck out of the zone and up to the Wingers well, and the Caps were around the net a lot.
But their goalie was better tonight. I'd say Theo is generally, just average.

Posted by: Max23 | December 7, 2008 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Wow. OK, that was well-played, even though we lost. Leighton had to stand on his head all evening with all the shots we were putting his way. Lepisto was seriously abused behind the net, but there should have been someone at the post, -and- that third goal from out in front was just... oy. Everybody was tangled, and Whitney just, "oh, my puck, *flip*!" We were in it right until the last five minutes.

Posted by: obx13 | December 7, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

ergoroc: Totally agree with everything you said, Theodore is a 4.5mil (I think) joke, and the joke is on us. Did you see Brooks try to block the shot with about 20 seconds left even though JT was there? That is a clear sign that the players do not believe in him. Brooks even looked shocked that the save was made. JT had 2 late saves which means when Carolina made it 3-1 they scored 2 goals on 4 shots in the 3rd. If BJ has a hurt hip put him on th darn shelf like all the other injured players and lets give Varlomov or Machesky a shot for petes sake. Our goaltending is killing us. We will not go anywhere if we don't shore up our goaltending issues. Even if BJ is the better of the two he's not sturdy enough to be a #1 he gets hurt too often. I am embarrased for the rest of the team because the Bears/Caps were the better team on the ice today.

Posted by: fanohock1 | December 7, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Agreed, Leighton had a good game. Theo..not so much. He seems to get scored on often when he goes out too far L or R to stop a shot and then cannot get back in position in time. Leighton seemed packed into his net filling uo every space.

Oops Darren's last name is spelled Machesney. His save pct is very good in the AHL though, Varlomov's is better.

Posted by: fanohock1 | December 7, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

I've got an idea. Next time Brent can't go why not just play the entire game with 6 skaters and no goalie? That would give us a better chance to win.

There's gonna be people defending Theodore again, but I'm beyond sick of hearing that he needs a chance to work his way out of a slump. He's been in a slump all year. That shutout... He had nothing to do. Just like tonight. While we peppered Leighton all game Theodore basically had nothing to do and he still managed to let in 3.

The first goal was a terrible rebound and it also took him half an hour to recover. He was just frozen to the ice.

The second goal... Keep your damn foot on the post. I don't care that Lepisto lost it behind the net. If Theo keeps his foot on the post it's not a goal. Leighton stopped tons of shots like that tonight.

Please tell me one time Theo outplayed the other team's goalie. Not once! We get excited when he's "solid" which means that he doesn't have anything to do and doesn't let in more than one crappy goal. And when we get outplayed and get scored 5 goals on we're not supposed to say anything about Theo. It's the team's fault.

That's what the goalie is there for. To save us on bad nights and to at least not screw it up on nights when we dominate like tonight. In every god damn game Theo gets outplayed by the other team's goalie. If we had decent goaltending even with all the injuries we'd have 10 more points, at least.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 7, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Theo will never be anything but an average goalie. Once he has a very good game, he can't seem to have two good games in a row. We can't have that as a number 1 goalie. We need consistency and we need him to play better than the opponent's goalie, which has never happened, Theo is not a number 1 goalie, now Brent is. Start Brent for the rest of the season while giving Theo a couple of games in between, this way Johnny can get into a rhythm and eventually turn into the number 1 goalie.

@lamplighter1 - The difference will be that by Wednesday, HOPEFULLY, Johnson should be ready to play. We could NOT risk putting Johnson back in net tonight. Not against the 'Canes. We need him for Wednesday against the Bruins.

This game is not the end of the world.

Posted by: irockthered | December 7, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Theordore is a disgrace...maybe since 1/2 the team is now from Hershey, we should bring up a Hershey goalie and send Theodore packing. Leighton played a great game which further rubs in how horrendous Theordore is. The Caps could have won that game with a consistently good goalie. I hope Johnny is better by Wednesday as we're going to be tested.

Every other game Theodore plays makes me wish Huet never left. It just seems to me that Theodore doesn't have chemistry with the team. Huet was thrown in near the end of the season and he was pretty consistant. Theodore had the offseason to get used to the guys yet he still can't be counted on. He wanted to play for a good team, but he's not playing good for the team at all.

rachel216- I watched Bruce's postgame interview and he said that Sami shouldn't have tripped over his feet. But I totally agree that he had no support.

Cheese was solid tonight but he usually gives up some good rebounds and he is not quick to get up when he goes down. Valamov is very quick up and down and has good vision. the big problem with him is he slides out to much and has troubles getting back in position. Varlamov will be the better of the 2 once he gets more comfortable.

Posted by: cocorules | December 7, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

lamplighter1,
I'm no expert, just like to keep tabs on things. I keep track of Bears games in box score and just happened to see the All-Star voting announcement. Tess or BearsWoooo or somebody else probably has a better feel for how they play. I've only been to one Bears game, so what I know are the numbers and stats of our guys, not necessarily *how* they play.
Stats-wise on the Bears goalies:
Machesney--3 SO, .894 SV%, 2.53GAA and a 9-3-0 record.
Varlamov--1 SO, .908 SV%, 2.29 GAA and a 10-2-0 record.
They split one game and Varly recorded the loss. They face about the same amount of shots (M-303:V-282). Cheese seems to have his great nights and his okay nights. Varly seems to be consistently good. But like I said, tess sees them for every home game, so she'd be a better tour guide.

My concern with Boudreau's comments is that either one of the goalies "deserves" to play. I'm not anyone deserves anything. The word is usually used as an excuse when someone has not earned it. Johnny doesn't deserve to play any more than Theo, but when Johnny plays well, he should continue to start because he will help the team more (whether he deserves it or not).

Same with the decision to bring up Giroux. I have no idea if he was the best option to bring up and if he was, good decision. But the justification "he deserves it" concerns me as if playing for the Caps is a reward for the call up rather than because the callup will fit the Caps need.

Also, is he the same Giroux who played for the Caps at the end of the 06-7 season wearing #39 (now steckle's #)?

Thank you.

You never really want 2 defensemen behind the net. If they get trapped back there, there's no D out front to cover.

The D on the play you're referring to was on the opposite post covering a forward. That's his job. There was no forward back covering the opposite post. That was Backstrom's man. They had a good play on that score.

thanks jmu. That sucks. It wasn't listed like that on the program lineup. What did comcast put on their hd channel instead, i wonder. Good to know that recording the game is unreliable. Thats just perfect.

Posted by: oo7 | December 7, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom with the incredibly stupid turnover that led to the 1st goal set the tone for the rest of the night. In what universe does a forward casually skate up ice in his own end with the puck and then pass it behind him? It doesn't matter that he scored the only goal. He and Kozlov were asleep at the wheel the entire night hence the fact their line was on ice for 2 of the 3 goals against.

Sami even tho I like him had a bad night defensively as well. Helmer played well as did Collins and both deserve to stay up here. Demote Sami when Poti re-enters the lineup.

Lepisto was stuck behind the net. I thought it was Jurcina on the other post to the left of JT. The puck came out to the right and was immediately put in. JT's skate was against the post, but the puck went over the boot and in. It was a good goal.

Posted by: Greg S. | December 7, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Greg ... ok ...thanks ... i just wish someone had been there at the left post to keep that from happening ... JT was having to look both ways the way the puck was going back and forth in the struggle ... thought there was enough time for someone to get back down on that post ... just a missed assignment ... maybe simply one of the "youthfull mistakes" we have to live with for a little longer until our young team gets some more seasoning ... i agree with the others that JT is still struggling but that one is where you would hope he had some help at the post ... i'm sure Bruce will point it out when they watch film ... that would be really interesting to be able to see the film study and how they analyze things.

does anyone think that my former home town hawks would part ways with Nikolai Khabibulin for the right bait? I know Quennevelle is partial to Khabibulin, but with Huet sitting there and Corey Crawford waiting in the minors, maybe they would be apt to move either one.

Either way, the Caps wont be playing long into the spring if they don't make a move for a more solid goalie. Johnson is a nice #2, but we need a consistent stopper that can go in almost every night. Ala Huet last March and April.

i think it's unfair that people don't think johnny has what it takes to be an almost every night starter. with the power of our offense and our defense healthy, we've got one of the best teams in the league. further, johnny SAID in the off season he thought he could compete for the #1 position this year, and he's done just that! i think that with some number 1 training, johnny CAN be the starter. furthermore, how many of you thought johnny would have even STARTED as many games as this by now, much less that he'd have played them so well?! he's outplayed everyone's expectations, and i think it's time we sit back and listen to what he's trying to tell us. johnson is precisely what every goalie should be- loyal and consistent. i'd be willing to follow him to the playoffs, and i'd be a lot more confident doing that with him than with theo.

I wish I had something nice to say about Theo - I like the guy actually, I think when he's "on" he's terrific.

I didn't like how he didn't get up in time for the first goal, he didn't seem interfered by anybody. I usually can find some excuses but he has responsibilities on the first and second goals. I would not give up on him - I have the feeling that we'll need him during the season, and that he can raise to the occasion in the playoffs.

Having said that, I think we lost mainly because we had that moment of black out. An almost perfect third period, in which we camped in their zone... a momentary lapse of reason and boom-boom, two goals.

It's a pity because the Canes were terrible tonight. The Bruins are a completely different team, a lot stronger.

Posted by: mauree | December 7, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Everyone here is so quick to blame Theo. Granted, he was average at best tonight, but its not like the Caps didn't have their chances.

The game would've had a different outcome had Ovy scored on the penalty shot.

Posted by: dml1077 | December 7, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Johnson would have been cat-like getting back in net on the first goal if he gave up that rebound. He would have been quick to the post on the 2nd one, and he probably wouldn't be standing with his blocker on the ice when the play is 15 feet away from the goal. The results with Johnny speak for themselves. He's more athletic and much quicker overall than Theo. He can do what needs to be done for this team - it's now time to forget salaries and play who is playing better. Brent Johnson for President...

Posted by: Roose | December 7, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@dml1077

The Caps did have their chances - and their goalie answered those challenges. That is what Theo doesn't do on a regular basis. I don't want to jump on the guy but we just can't get 4.5 million worth of play out of this guy - he has to be more than adequate for that kind of money or he is just a backup.

Posted by: Roose | December 7, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

So, I will admitt that I might be wrong.

I did a little detective work on the goalie situation and between Kolzig, Huet, Theodore, Khabibulin and Johnson. Of the five, Johnson has the second best GAA just a couple hundreths off the pace of Khabibulin, but miles ahead of the others at 2.46 -vs- 2.59 respectivly. The save percentage bears out the same way as well, with Johnson far and away above all others with a .913 percentage. Out of all these guys mentioned, Johnson has also played more then any of the others with 717 mins.

I am going to change my posistion here based on the stats alone, nothing more. Given the chance, it appears that Johnson would be more than a capable starter. When compared to the goalies that were here previously, he wins hands down. Including Huet. Khabibulin is the only goalie who is sporting better stats, so my idea is rubbish at best.

solution: let Johnnie start and put Theo in the back up roll. Play Johnnie almost every night, let him find a grove and develope a chemistry with the guys in front of him.

If that doesnt work, who the heck knows!

@lamplightergirl

Remember, as much as I love Johnny, there have been games where he has been very suspect (and noted here with comments such as 'Thats why he's not a #1 goalie)

the only time johnny has been suspect was against san jose, and the rest of the team sucked that night too. and note that even with that 7-2 MASSACRE, his stats STILL beat up all the other goalies'!!!

The only reason Theo is still getting chances to be the #1 with the way he's played is his salary. If he weren't making over $4 mil his butt would be stuck to the bench most of the time by now.

Whoever defended Theo please don't. Yes, we had a lot of chances, but once agains Theo got completely outplayed by the opposing goalie. One who makes a fraction of his salary for that matter. This has been going on all season. I can't remember 1 game in which he outplayed the opposing goalie. Even in games in which he didn't allow many goals. He basically had nothing to do.

When we dominate the game like we did last night a #1 high priced goalie is EXPECTED to stop the occasional shot. That's his god damn job and he didn't do it.

He can be blamed on all 3 goals in my opinion.

1. Crappy rebound & slow to get up.

2. Foot off the post.

3. Fishing for change on the ice way before the shot is taken.

#3 is the most concerning because he does that all the time. Sometimes he gets lucky and the puck hits him. But when it doesn't he's in no position to react to the shot. His fundamentals are all wrong right now. He's playing like I did as a goalie in floor hockey games. But what works well against random bums who can't get their shot up doesn't work in the NHL. The top of our net is constantly unprotected when Theo is in goal and players around the NHL have caught on.

Last thing. Collins impressed the heck out of me again. Very quick skater, makes great decisions, knows when to step up.

Forgot to mention. Sami Lepisto played well overall. Yes, he made a mistake that lead to the 2nd goal (with lots of help from Theo, as I've already mentioned a few times), but he was trapped behind the net with 2 bigger Carolina forwards all over him and just tripped over someone's stick and fell. Things happen. It's unfortunate, but shouldn't take away from the fact that he played a very good game otherwise. In any case, Theo should have stopped that shot. had he done so we wouldn't be talking about Sami right now.

Also, I've said this since before the season even started, but I'll take Varlamov (not Varlomov or Varmalov as some keep spelling it) over Theo any day. I saw Varlamov quite a lot in the RSL last year and he was amazing. lead Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to one of the top places in the regular season and to the cup final in the RSL playoffs. Yes, he's probably still adjusting to the North American game, but I'd say that at this point he can't possibly do any worse than Jose. I'm sure they're worried about killing his confidence if things go awry, but I don't see it happening. In most games we hem the opposing team in their zone for 80% of the time. Look at Mason in Columbus. He's done great since he was given a chance. In my evaluation Varlamov is every bit as talented as Mason.
