Tonight's Lineup
Based on warm ups, here are tonight's lines against the Blues. The most notable change is an easy one as Coach Bruce Boudreau split up the Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin line, likely to make it harder for his friend Andy Murray to match his lines as effectively against the two snipers.
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Nylander-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Green-Morrisonn
Alzner-Jurcina
Poti-Collins
Varlamov

I like what I see so far, just wish I could be there live. There were some... let's just call them issues at the office... that's about the most diplomatic way I can put it... :P

Blah, looks like the HD has reverted to widescreen. Hopefully it's a temporary technical difficulty; the HD looks much better...

mauree...thanks for the link...where do you get that? i could use that every game!!!
Posted by: deadskin | December 18, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse
deadskin,
atdhe.net is pretty good, you can find most games there most of the times. Justintv is also good.
Pretty good period, Varly keeps impressing me. Some saves were simple, some difficult... the point is, he made them all.

Thank you all for the comments. You all are my only link to this game.

Dumb question: That web stream isn't legal, is it? The NHL has a paid subscription service for watching online streaming of its games.

Jen, stuck on dialup? No TV? :\
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse
Jen.....google federal news radio and hit the listen on line....should be streamed anywhere
Posted by: RichC3 | December 18, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse
Well that sucks. At least we get a PP coming out of the TV timeout.
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse
Greg, I'm not sure a powerplay is a good thing tonight. They can't get anything set up.
Posted by: tess2201 | December 18, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse
tess, true that... :\
Put it on net, boys! I want to hear a few more sirens before the game is through.

Found it on radio. Thanks!
Posted by: Jen12 | December 18, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse
Jen, all the games are on 1500AM and 820AM, for your future reference. And also on TV on Comcast Sportsnet (sometimes Versus or NBC) if you have cable/satellite/FiOS. Of course for NBC you don't need those, but you'll only get two or three of those, I think.
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 8:22 PM | Report abuse
we are not looking good on the powerplay and we are giving the blues too many scoring chances on varlamov....LETS GO CAPS!! We need a strong finish to the 2nd and a strong 3rd

KOZZY AGAIN!

Kozlov! On fire!
Posted by: dabnjab | December 18, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse
OK, Kozzy again...maybe this goal would energize them a bit...
Posted by: fnralch | December 18, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse
Well, that figures. I go to the kitchen to take a cake out of the oven and they score while I'm away. Does this mean I have to spend the rest of the game in the kitchen if we want a win?

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse
Greg, I said the same thing. He had a player completely in his face and just snatched that puck out of the air!

Son of a biscuit, he better be okay.
Brash, go get 'em. Now.
(Apparently if you use a bad word, the post gets held for moderation. Oops. :( My bad...)

Man I hope he's ok... that cross check didn't look bad or intentional though to tell you the truth - did I interpret it correctly?

damn
Posted by: Moose33 | December 18, 2008 9:09 PM | Report abuse
mauree, I didn't see anything terribly malicious. Looks like his skate just got caught kinda funny on the ice. Man oh man I hope he is okay!
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 9:10 PM | Report abuse
Semin's already missed a whole month because of an "upper body injury"--I hate to think he may miss more with this hit...
Posted by: fnralch | December 18, 2008 9:10 PM | Report abuse
Well Varly couldn't stop THAT one lol
Posted by: mauree | December 18, 2008 9:13 PM | Report abuse
I agree Greg, I don't think it was intentional. He just fell kind of funny. Could be a twisted knee, or maybe a groin pull the way he kinda did a split on the way down. Hope he's ok.
As for the three stars, Kozlov and Varlamov, yes. I'd give the third to Ovechkin, or maybe Alzner. I think he's had a pretty solid game. Haven't been paying enough attention to the Blues to see if any of them are having a exceptional game. Poti, by the way, is terrible tonight in my opinion.

Can we retire the trapezoid yet? :P
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 9:22 PM | Report abuse
Varly got a penalty for that in a Hershey game earlier this year. Guess he forgot...
Posted by: tess2201 | December 18, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse
So Joe B. and Locker said Green has not played much, in the third, nor have i seen him play much. Anyone know what happened to him?
Posted by: elicea | December 18, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse
I hope Green is ok too :(
Posted by: mauree | December 18, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse
I only noticed Green one shift early in the period, but he looked like he was skating ok.
Posted by: tess2201 | December 18, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse
Err. They just came back! I hope it's nothing serious and that they'll be back by Saturday.

Two more points for the good guys. See you Saturday afternoon, everyone!
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 18, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse
well done tonight. Varlamov was excellent. Have to play better against Philly though.
Posted by: Moose33 | December 18, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse
I got to say this about Varly (now that the game is over hehe):
wow.
I usually don't like goalie excuses, but the first one was a wicked deflection, the second... a goal by Ovi lol... Other than that he's been great. And I don't care about the trapezoid minor, he'll learn that soon enough.

As reported by the guy who has my tickets for tonight's game...
3rd star: Ovechkin
2nd star: Varlamov
1st star: Kozlov
(Thanks, Jerome!)

Nice game by Varley. Wonderful to know his game against Montreal was no where near a fluke.
Kozlov was flying today. Kind of quiet down near the end, but either way, he had a good night.
So much for the OBS line breaking up. as much as at times they can be too cute, I want that line to stay together. They make the other team's defense scramble.
I thought Fehr had a good game. Nice to see him back.

Ok that little clip of Semin leaning against the benches, before he was about to go through the doors, in what looked like excruciating pain, was not very pleasant to see.
Posted by: elicea | December 18, 2008 9:37 PM | Report abuse
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but during the post-game show they had a shot of Semin falling into the hallway off of the ramp. He seemed to be stuck in the doorway. Didn't look good at all.

One phrase that Joe B should ever use again "Semin cleaning up that mess"....I took a double take on that one.

Just walked in the door from the VC. Did comcast really just do ONE minute on the caps so they could go right to the Redskins??
Two guys go down injured and we get more shucks and golly-gee from Zorn??
I'm simply stunned
Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 18, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse
tkachuks a coward. per the code, he should have answered the bell; one of the blues had to man up. take away the instigator rule. the refs missed that? 4 refs weren't watching the play with the puck? tkachuk, you loser.
Posted by: oo7 | December 18, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse
All in all? Thought it was a well played game. Hard to get into a flow once the refs started goofing around in the 3rd. Missing Greene and then Semin though also made a huge difference. I'm hoping Greene is OK. He took 2 shifts in the 3rd and then that was it. Do we have an update?
One big concern though? They are going to have to really step up the physical play and the defense against Philly. Every game lately it seems like there are 2-5 shifts where the guys dont play tight, goof around in the defensive zone or cant clear the puck. Philly will pounce on that and make you pay.
Hey....Hard Hat?? Anyone know on that?

"Just walked in the door from the VC. Did comcast really just do ONE minute on the caps so they could go right to the Redskins"
You have bad information. They had at least a fifteen minute post-game show including the coach's press conference.
