So ... who fights Colton Orr if that punk gets out of hand tonight?

Posted by: Cerealman | December 23, 2008 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Cerealman,

Brads would likely be the candidate. Though, I hope I'm wrong. I love Brads, but the guy, in my opinion, cannot fight.

Posted by: elicea | December 23, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

maybe Giroux will fight? I do love how he's all over the ice hitting anything that moves.

Posted by: RedBirdie | December 23, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Let's hope it's not Ovie. Clearly he is the toughest guy on the roster tonight. I expect the Rangers to be taking cheap shots on him all night long.

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | December 23, 2008 7:27 PM | Report abuse

I think Theo may have made one of his last starts in a Capitals uniform. Too bad; he had some promise.

Come on Caps, there's plenty of time left. Let's go!

Varlamov... this is the answer for Capitals goalie problems...

Posted by: wizardzik | December 23, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

The team hung him out to dry on that last one.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | December 23, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

yeah... I also got the same impression of last year with Olie: the team doesn't play for him as much as for Brent.

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Well it didn't last long for Theodore. That said, I can really only blame him for one of those goals. Ranger's 1st and 3rd goals, he really didn't have that good of a chance.

Oh right, "Next Goalie"

If he gives up 1 or 2 more, he might not see another start.

3 goals on 6 shots..sucks that the team wont play in front of him.

There is still time though.

This year the NHL has seen many big comebacks.

The Rangers almost came back against the Devils being 4 goals down.

Philly came back against the 'Canes being 4 down in the 3rd.

havent we seen the caps do this before? It only takes one to get it started

Posted by: elicea | December 23, 2008 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Although I love the idea of a comeback, I don't see it happening the way the Caps are playing so far. And Johnson doesn't look good, especially after that last stop - as Joe B said he doesn't think we've seen the last of JT this evening....

Wow...Johnny doesn't look 100% out there.

As for Theo -- you can see that he has no confidence. He seems tentative and looks worried that a shot may come his way...for good reason.

Caps need to bring up Varley, have Theo as backup and put Johnny on LTIR just so he can heal and they can ride him for the rest of the season. This summer, they then need to buy out Theo's contract and set him loose.

Look, this team is so depleted that it's going to be really hard to come back... the Rangers are not exactly at the bottom of the league... plus both goalies not 100%...

I'm just gonna cheer the boys for anything good that can come from this game :) who knows, maybe Ovi can make it happen, he's looking good out there.

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

i think if the team sends theo down he will have to clear waivers. if, by some stupid stroke of luck, another team claims him, i think the caps would still be on the hook for 1/2 his salary counts towards the cap for the remainder of his two year contract. someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

at this point, that looks like a good trade. the other option is for him to come down with some sudden and unfortnate injury that allows the caps to put him on LTIR. the skins used to be the masters of that. they put their backup QB on IR w/ some mysterious, undetectable blood disorder. brilliant.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | December 23, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

We can blame Theo all we want (and I for one am no fan of his), but our defense is poor and our offense is is missing. I think the injuries are starting to catch up with the Caps. Sure even with the injuries we can, and have, put in a strong game against a good team (see Boston and Montreal). But in general, playing a good team is more likely a route (see San Jose, Philadelphia, and now NYR). We are again playing with 4 D out of 6 that didn't start the season in the NHL. Missing Semin, Green, and Fed is taking a lot of scoring away, and although they may have done well, the Bears are just not able to put points on the board like they do.

So, yes, the Caps have got to start looking at goalie options, but we need to play better on D and score more or else any goalie would have trouble. That will all come together if the injuries don't continue. If we keep losing top players in bunches, we may make the playoffs, but any good team will take us in a 7 game series.

Posted by: HJH11 | December 23, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

elicea,

Ovie might have 5 goals in him. However, once Theo gets back in net, which I have a feeling may happen, he may let in another 5 himself. :)

Posted by: Puckdawg69 | December 23, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

I know OV has done some great things and can really carry the team, but it really seems like he carries the team only when its a onr or 2 goal game or the Caps are up big.

I may be wrong but I dont think I have seen him just take over a game when the Caps have been dominated

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | December 23, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Theodore is obviously this year's version of Glen Hanlon.

He must go. Immediately.

There are two choices:

1) Waive him. Maybe he gets claimed. Maybe 1 in 100 chance. Otherwise you send him to the minors and pay him the remaining $7.2M he's owed and let him ride the bus. However, he will demoralize the Bears or whatever team he plays on. The only good thing out of this is you get the cap space to keep $4.5M yearly worth of players for the rest of the year (Alzner + Varlamov + another $2M).

2) Buy him out. That costs you 2/3rds of the $7.2M. The good news is he's gone forever. The other good news, and I don't fully understand how it works with the cap, but 2/3rds of Theodore + Varlamov is less than 100% of Theo. And if the buyout hits the cap over add'l years, like I think it does, like it does with Clymer, you get add'l space this year.

Yes, the team played rotten in front of him. On the 1st goal, Alzner was way on the other side of the ice (he and Jurcina were both in the goalie's right corner) and Flash perfomed awful covering the third man in. But, on the third goal, he was so far out of the crease he should have bought a ticket. It was really ugly. Theo has no confidence and the team has no confidence in him.

Finally, sorry to be longwinded, but my first note in about 4 days, but I don't buy the idea that you hurt Varlamov to bring him up. I was there as a STH when Carey came up. He was great for two years. Then they started beating him top shelf and he failed to adapt. He got lazy, just like Theo now. Will Varlamov continue to improve or will he pull a Carey? IMHO, it has less to do with when you bring him up than it does with his character. The team is filled with Russians - he'll never fit in better.

Cut Theo tomorrow and let's see Varlamov in net Friday. Maybe it will send a message to Nylander.

So at the 15th minute or so he will officially be making an "improvement."

Posted by: austinsteve | December 23, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to take a little different slant here. I know this may sound unbelievable, given the score, but it's true: the Caps outplayed the Rangers in that period. I don't agree with the people complaining about the way the team plays in front of Theo as opposed to Johnson; they have more shots than the Rangers, better shots, plenty of strong plays through the neutral zone, and far more sustained offensive zone time. Goals 2 and 3 were absolute flukes. The Caps defended them perfectly and suffered from unmitigated horrible luck. Especially the third one.

Don't get me wrong, we could CERTAINLY use some better goaltending. If you put Lundqvist at our end we would be ahead right now regardless of what else happened. But the most frustrating thing to me is watching the Caps fire shot after quality shot and then seeing the Rangers rack up goals on utter garbage.

That said, I completely agree that the injuries are taking their toll, and that management should give serious consideration to throwing Varlamov in there.

The Capitals have made some bad free agent signings in the past, but the signing of Jose Theodore has got to be the worst signing this team has ever made. This idiot couldn't save a beach ball rolling at him slower then a baby can walk. Johnson, when healthy, should absolutely be this teams #1 goalie and get a contract extension for his yeoman's work thus far this season. Theodore on the other hand should be waived before he can even take his leg pads off tonight and Varlamov should be brought up to serve as the #2 netminder. I'm sick and tired of watching the Capitals get blown out every time Jose "Three or More" Crapodore plays in goal. My goodness, I'd much rather have the old man Kolzig playing in net for us then Crappy boy. The only props I will give Theodore is his new mask....that thing is pretty tight!

Well, that's my rant for the night.

Here's my big question: why is this team so completely different at home than on the road? On the road they alternate between scratching out wins and being utterly dominated, while at home it's been two months (other than the loss to Florida) since anyone even got within a goal of them. I mean, everyone knows that almost all teams do better at home than on the road, but this disparity is MUCH greater than you would expect. And I've watching hockey for 25 years and playing it for 20, and I don't have any idea what's going on there.

Posted by: christiansonm | December 23, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

@ boo

Posted by: elicea | December 23, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Not all of the goals were his fault, but there is no question Theo is tentative and the team plays differently in front of him. We can't wait any longer for him to "find" his game - the guy has been a pro long enough to get himself in shape with training camp and preseason. These games count! Yes, the injuries are showing to some degree, but we are still in 1st place and think about how much better we could be with good goaltending all of the time. Johnson stays,he has played very well; Theo goes. Buy him out and turn the page.

The other thing that I find very bizarre about the Caps is how little attention anybody pays to the difference Semin makes. Do a thought experiment: imagine that Ovie had missed the same number of games that Semin has. Do you think you could go five minutes on a blog, newspaper story, tv broadcast, without someone mentioning it? But Semin was leading the league in scoring when he got hurt, and is still second in points per game, despite not being nearly as effective in his brief return. You can talk tough about how injuries shouldn't be used as an excuse, but how do you expect a team to lose the leading scorer in the league and play just as well?
And before you say it, I agree he seems fragile, and Ovie seems to take a lot more punishment without missing a beat, but he also seems extremely overshadowed and underappreciated.

Posted by: christiansonm | December 23, 2008 8:41 PM | Report abuse

christiansonm:
Oh I think everyone misses Semin. I would not have said that last season (although I would have missed him :-)), but this season I think that the vast majority of peopl realize his value.

Posted by: --Boo-- | December 23, 2008 8:46 PM | Report abuse

@christiansonm

you said it yourself at the end. The strength of a player is also measured by... well, his strength. If Semin was as strong as Ovi and had two full seasons, trust me, he'd me more missed. He's missed anyway.

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Correction everybody. Theo let in 3 goals in 5 shots--not 6. Poor decision to send Varlamov back with one goalie off- and -on the injured list and another so unstable. I see no other choice but to bring him back from Hershey whether this means they will have 3 goalies, or send Varly to Hershey or buy him out or whatever. Theo is talented and I feel bad for him, but you can't have serious ambitions for the Cup and experiment with adequate to unpredictable goal tending. At least this is what I am thinking at the moment.

P.S Other than the goal-tending contrast between the 2 teams, I don't see the Caps doing anything wrong. We have more shots that they do, and we picked up energy in the 2nd period even after such a terrible first period.

Wow -- back from Xmas shopping and reading that the overpriced hunk of swiss cheese let in 3 of 5. The Caps should send Theo to Hershey and pull up Varly. Let Johnson and Varly fight it out for the #1 spot. JT just stinks -- like the block of moldy swiss cheese he is.

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

I quite agree that Semin is worth less than if he could play a full season. Points per game gives you a good idea of a player's skill, but points per season tells you more about how much he is helping the team.

I believe his contract is through next season. After that it's going to be tough, especially if he misses significant time next year too. You know someone will make him a huge offer and take the injury risk. I'll be sad if the Caps let him go, but worried if they keep him and assume the injury risk.

I don't want Semin to leave either, but the fact is, keeping him is going to be risky if he continues to show the same propensity for injury. I'm not saying wrong, I'm saying risky.

Regardless of the goaltending issues, this team certainly has heart. They haven't given up when the score was 4-0 - and it looks like Theodore is getting better as he makes some key saves and the team is giving him some offense. GO CAPS!

But then again, I haven't completely given up on Theodore, just yet. So hopefully he makes the best out of this chance, and doesn't make me look like some hopeful, foolish kid.

Sucks that Brash is out, but I'm interested to see what A. Gordon can do.

Fantastic game, but I still hold that Theo must go.

OTOH, this gives you the opportunity to give him one more chance. Even with the great saves in the 3rd period, he was way overplaying the puck and going way out of the crease when the Rangers went wide.

I have to say, I've said many times to trade Kozlov if that made the cap work, but he was very good tonight. I also got new respect reading that long Kozzie article.

BB has to get tremendous credit tonight for pushing the right buttons. 1st time Rangers have lost at home after a 4-0 lead since 1979!!!

Imagine a team missing 8 players from opening night...falling behind 4-0 at the MSG...and winning it in OT. Simply sublime!

The whole team played with a lot of heart and was unreal after BB called that timeout. Theo was pretty solid in the last 40 minutes, made 2 saves to keep them alive. Great effort.

The Greatest Player on Earth and the Greatest Show on Earth!! At times you are cursing, asking when the show is going to end. Other times you are Tom Cruising it off the couch.

Posted by: ThePat | December 23, 2008 9:40 PM | Report abuse

WOW! CANT'T BELIEVE THIS. I TAKE IT ALL BACK IN TERMS OF DOUBTS ET. It is true that we can't afford to battle a four-goal deficit in each game and we need solid goal-tending. But what a team!!! To win after a shaky start; on the road; AND with 8 key players missing!!!!! This is far more worth it than just to win. We've got heart, energy, imagination, OVI, great coaching, great farm team.....Theo (after the first period) showed what he can do when he plays up to his potential. A thrilling game.

....

RIGHT.

....

Sorry guys, if they'll do that every time I start dooming and glooming, you can call my ass Eeyore. I shut it off after the second goal and didn't tune in again until the beginning of the third, and I could not believe my eyes. You can't count these guys out of anything. All we had to get to pull out a frickin' Miracle on 34th Street was some solid goaltending and an Ovi strike. That was it.

Jose? Brent? REMEMBER THAT.

Also, Johnson looked like death warmed over on that bench. I'm sorry, he looked AWFUL. Wonder if that explains Saturday night.

I didn't see the second half of the first or the second at all, but I did see the third.

Sloan looked solid to me - he made some great defensive plays and came up with the puck more often than not along the boards. Collins read the Rangers offense disgustingly well - they couldn't do anything with him. Helmer ... enh. Had some problems getting the puck out of neutral ice and at least once just stood there with the puck loose in front of him.

Laich is MONEY on the power play point. DAMN. I hadn't seen that one coming, but ... this guy can do anything!

Ovi and Theodore between them pulled this out. He had to make those key saves when it mattered, and boy howdy did he. Ovi got the scoring started, and then tied it.

Mo! #26 gets his first goal in 44 games on his 26th birthday. Happy birthday ShaMo!

The celebration on the ice cracked me up XD

mauree,
He was complaining that the refs were calling too much. He also said that in order to win against the Caps, you start a bench-clearing brawl in the first period. Said you just had to keep hitting Ovechkin and keep him on his @$$ and he couldn't score on you. I just laughed and rolled my eyes. He obviously does not watch enough Ovechkin highlights. XD

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

I was going to wait until Tarik's update to post this, but THAT was the perfect example of an MVP performance by Ovechkin. It's almost as if he invented a new gear after we went down 4-0.

Ovechkin led by example, skating as hard as he possibly could, hitting everything in sight and firing from everywhere just trying to force something to happen out of sheer will. And it worked.

Ovechkin didn't let up, his teammates followed suit. Heck we even saw Kozlov out hustle someone a couple times. Just an amazing game.

@windjammersouth: *blink* I think I've only just begun to pick up the basics of watching individual players. I'm no expert - I know only what I see and am learning to see. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though!

I guess Theo had to give the guys in front of him a little faith, and Ovi had to give the guys behind him a little faith, and then they stormed back. Storming back from a four goal deficit to win in OT ... defeating the Rangers in extra time is no small feat!

Also, just hunting for stats, would appreciate comments from eyes on the game ....

- Alzner/Juice was a -3? Ouch, guys. Bad night.
- The rest of Hershey looked better - the other two D pairs finished at +1. Lot of -1's tonight.
- Faceoff totals were pretty even. Steckel was a beast in the faceoff circle when he was in it, winning 4 out of 5. Gordon and Backstrom both came up even at 5/10 and 10/20 respectively. Nylander won 4/9 for 44%.
- 2/5 on the PP. Boy did we make the Rangers pay for those late penalties. They were stupid penalties, too, to my eyes.

Posted by: kittypawz | December 23, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Pens outshot 29-15 at home... so glad I'm not a Pens fan right now...

Sorry for me mentioning them too much, but I don't mind them losing a lot - especially in a night when the Caps win, and particularly when OVI plays like this.

mauree,
"Well that was just the worst display of hockey ever." Then, nothing. Absolutely nothing. He changed it to ESPN and started watching tennis or something boring. I'm going to convert him eventually, it will just take some time. He's getting old and crabby and set in his ways and hitting 60 didn't help. I'm hoping to bring him to a Caps game at some point. Last NHL game he went to was probably a Canes game when they played in Greensboro before RBC was finished.
Boo!, Absolutely. Although you may have to share (in my house, at least) with my mom. Ovie scored the minute she sat down. (Although I'll give you more of the credit since she asked if he was the goalie earlier tonight.)
ESPN just showed highlights of the game. Only showed the first three Rags goals with loving voice overs. And then at the end the caster had this mental breakdown like, "uhhhh, what do I say? The Rags didn't win." Nice, ESPN, nice.

Go figure: Caps down 4-0, and my wife drags me to her sister's place. I come home and find out they make the comeback of the season. At least I caught the highlights. This is one incredible team. Can never count them down. Props to them and their coaches. Enjoy the holidays, get some rest and more importantly, get healthy for Friday's game against Buffalo.

Posted by: --Boo-- | December 23, 2008 10:25 PM | Report abuse

@SombreroGuy: Agreed. Ovi was the difference. He takes this team on his shoulders, and we would be lost without him. We really would be. THAT is why he is the MVP, and why he could easily win again this year.

But give credit to Theo. Ovi couldn't have done it alone. Theo sharpened up and came out big, made a couple of key saves when it counted, and got the guys thinking maybe they had a chance if they could score. Then Ovi scored, and that was the storm. He hung in there, he got back in the saddle, and he made it happen almost as much as Ovi and Boudreau did.

No, I'm not sold on Theo yet. Far from it. He does display flashes of brilliance, but we've GOT to get consistency from him. Without consistency, we're sunk.

@windjammersouth - Welcome aboard. NOW you see why we love these guys!

Ovi is a great leader by example. I saw all the goals in replay, and while I will say that first one was pure, unadulterated LUCK, it was all Ovi luck, and, to keep an earlier quote thread alive...

Lundqvist: You are wonderful!

Ovi: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.

Lundqvist: I admit it, you are better than I am.

Ovi: Then why are you smiling?

Lundqvist: Because I know something you don't know.

Ovi: And what is that?

Lundqvist: I... am not left-handed.

[Moves his sword to his right hand and gains an advantage]

Ovi: You are amazing.

Lundqvist: I ought to be, after 20 years.

Ovi: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.

Lundqvist: Tell me.

Ovi: I'm not left-handed either.

@SombreroGuy - If what Brent Johnson looked like sitting on the bench is any indication, the man needs to be home in bed. He looked like he felt like crap. No wonder he tweaked himself again! :( Poor guy!

I really hope that tonight's victory gives the Caps a big boost. It should do wonders for Theodore's confidence level. He *CAN* work miracles with that glove of his, and once he settled down, his stick work even started looking reasonably good.

Joe B. or Locker or somebody said he got thrown into the starter position this morning, though, and that shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us, with Johnny coming up sick/hurt, but it would have to Theo, so I'm not surprised it took him a bit to pull it together. But I am damn pleased that he DID!

Now... crow. I suppose we need to cook it thoroughly, like chicken... just not so much that it gets dried out. Do y'all want it roasted, or baked? I already have one order for crow in balsamic reduction with basil and cumin... ;-) I'm thinking roast crow in white wine sauce with a side of fetucini alfredo and asparagus might be tasty... ;-)

@jmu

I can relate. Back in Italy when I used to watch soccer with my dad (I'm talking about 1982) it was the exact same thing - him complaining about the "new" game and reminding of glorious past. Very stressful and hard to convince him otherwise.

Hope I won't do it with the next generation, but I can't help picturing me saying "back in the days, we had OVI... now, HE, was the man"...

@MKadyman - Sometimes, 1500 AM doesn't come through clearly in all areas. It's not got a real good broadcast range, and 820 AM is out of Frederick and has an even smaller one. This is why WTOP is now broadcasting on 103.5 FM where my favorite classical station used to be. (*grumble*) ;-)

If the Caps games are broadcast on XM anywhere, I'd like to know where... maybe I'll get a satellite radio if they are, for those games where I'm off driving somewhere.

It truly is a special thing when your get to watch the actual making of a legend.

When the NHL network, years from now, does the AO retrospective, do not be surprised if this game is one of the ones mentioned as a game "that defined the greatness of #8". (much like the 1-sec-left shot in NJ to tie the game, or the 10-sec-left-in-OT game winner against the Isles).

Let's go Caps!

We all know that AO is a terrific player. What proves it is the last crashing of the net that he did. He was crowded by 2 Rangers D-men. He skated with the puck close to the goal. He dropped it off. Pushed the 2 guys away, went back and got the puck and took a shot.

I've never seen any player do that before.

@--Boo-- - Yeah; 1500 AM tends towards the sucky most of the time, especially up around Baltimore. It still cranks me that they stole WGMS's 103.5 to put WTOP on it and they don't broadcast ANY traffic for the Baltimore area, but the broadcast reaches that far.

NOT a fan of WTOP or its affiliates. ;-)

But this was a really great comeback! Ovi showed his MVP colors, and that shot Greg S. mentioned was a thing of absolute beauty! I've never seen anything like it before.

Posted by: mauree | December 23, 2008 11:33 PM | Report abuse

@kittypawz - Yeah, I concur with that. This Cardiac Caps stuff has got to stop. Maybe this one will be Theodore's wakeup call, though. If he starts playing consistently as solidly as he did in the last third of this game, he WILL be able to work as half of a goalie tandem with Johnny.

That was what Theodore's supposed to look like, and, I think all it took was a bit of solid leadership from our very own MVP who wears the initial A on the front of his jersey and OVECHKIN across the back. I would not be surprised to see Ovi wearing a C next season, because he really got the team going. :)

That said, I hope Johnny gets over his cold soon... if nothing else because being sick over the holidays is no fun at all. :( Hopefully Steckel is feeling better, too, but if he's the culprit, I hope Johnny swats him one with a stick! ;-)

I'm glad we didn't need to use Brashear tonight, although looking at the Islanders' penalties... charging, tripping, hooking, kneeing, hooking... it could have gone very differently. Two of those five can really cause some damage.

Zhedrev charged Sloan, and Betts knee'd Backstrom... grrr! I hope neither one was damaged by the experience... but since Backstrom was still playing at the end, I suspect he, at least, was none the worse for wear. I find that I am becoming very sensitive to penalties - called and not - that can damage people, because I've seen more injuries to our guys than I like this season. A LOT more. I still have not re-watched the cross-check on Semin, or the slash on Brash (though that one might be harder to find on YouTube...).

Curiously, though, I don't object to the Pronger hit on Green... I suspect it's because it was a clean hit, and Green lost his balance. But I'm finding that the Caps play a clean game of hockey, with the majority of our penalties being for hooking more than anything else, with the other types of restraining penalties coming in next. And I like that. We're not out there to hurt people; we're out there to play hockey and win at it, and we demonstrated that tonight.

Could we have used a fight to get ourselves going? Maybe. Could we have justified it? Maybe. Would any of them have had the stones to drop the gloves with Brash? We don't know. But it didn't matter. :-)

Good for ShaMo to get his first goal since last February on his birthday, and have it be the game winner, too! Two big points - and we've beaten the Rangers twice this season. There aren't many other teams who can say that... in fact... NO other team can say that this year so far.

LET'S GO, CAPS!

I'm for bed. 'Night, all!

@mauree: Well, if you must. I was talking some trash earlier and didn't hold out a lot of hope.

"Think it'll work?"
"It'd take a miracle."
"BUH-BYE!"

@Section117: Yeah, kinda thought so. What did you guys think of Andrew Gordon? I thought he did pretty well with what little ice time he got.

Giroux's had four breakaways and is getting beaten every time. He's a right-place-right-time kind of guy, and I can see where if he can get the moves to beat an NHL goalie one-on-one he'll be really good, he needs those moves, and he hasn't got them yet.

@elicea: Agreed on all counts. Helmer didn't, but I thought Sloan did. So did Collins. I like the Mo/Collins matchup - they seem to work really well together, and I am genuinely impressed with how well the callups have integrated themselves and found themselves working partnerships with the guys in the big club. Sloan/Poti, Alzner/Juice, and Mo/Collins are all good examples.

Just got back from the game. Yes, in NY for the holidays. About 20 Caps fans in a sea of Blue. We kept cheering "let's go caps" every time it was quiet enough to be heard (especially loud after the Caps went down 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, and 4-0). Persisence pays off. FYI, the Rangers fans (at least down low) were the nicest we've seen (way better than Philly or Pitt). We cheered the entire game and no one tried to beat us up. What did Boudreau say to Jose or the other way around after the 1st period?

Posted by: fehrrocks | December 23, 2008 11:45 PM | Report abuse

@kitty

Agreed.

Just a thought. What if we keep those D pairings together-Sloan/Poti, Alzner/Juice, and Mo/Collins- when the blueline is healthy (excluding Schultz, though) then move Greenie on the wing?

Posted by: elicea | December 23, 2008 11:45 PM | Report abuse

@elicea

To be honest, except last game, where he was terrible, I think Green is playing well on D this year. Remember, he's +9, despite a -4 last game. And there's room for improvements there. Also, aside maybe Scott Niedermayer, I've never seen anyone skating so smoothly from end to end. He's a weapon, we should nurse him as such. He should be a bit more careful sometimes... I'm assuming he'll mature that way.

I'd never break Alzner/Juice. They had negative points but honestly were not at faults on the goals. I hope Juice keeps improving as he is right now... he's becoming more and more commanding, and he has the physical toughness we need back there - not to mention a wicked shot.

Re: Gordon, it was what it was, guessing the 20th guy on the roster (Brashear?) will be back Friday. Giroux's a Sloan equivalent, not much more he can do at this level maybe.

I wonder who the two are that are ready to go if Giroux (Clark?) and Helmer (Poti/Green) went back down.

@Section117: Schultz or Poti. I think Green and Erskine unlikely. I also think Semin unlikely for a while (can we put him and/or Fedorov on LTIR to keep Alzner?)

Could they also have sent those guys back down to save cap space?

Posted by: kittypawz | December 24, 2008 12:17 AM | Report abuse

@elicea - I don't think Green is a winger... yet. One day, he may be able to play both sides, but right now, I would leave him right where he is, on the blue line.

Didn't I read somewhere that Brooks Laich was learning to play D, though? Somebody other than Fedorov was... correct me if I have the wrong player? I thought it was Laich. If that's so, it's interesting... highly. I love the versatility we have on this team! The way it's set up is nothing short of brilliant.

Re: the callups - Boudreau's plug-n-play system is working very well, I think. Some of the callups have struggled - Bourque comes to mind - but Gordon did look solid tonight, and Alzner's proven himself quite handily.

I'm glad Helmer got to come up again. He's a great captain for the Bears, and our de facto captain-in-an-A-jersey can learn much from him. I have no doubts that Ovechkin will wear the C one day, and Brian Helmer is a great choice to show him some of the ropes, with Clark still off the ice for a few more days.

Hopefully, when he's back and healthy, Clark will be able to take up the reins again and BE captain. It's good, though, that we have Ovi for when Clark's not around. :)

@fehrrocks - Good to know about the Rangers fans. I was considering going to a game at MSG (Rangers-Pens) when I was up in NY for a disaster recovery simulation, but I didn't get freed up in time, and was getting sick to boot, so I skipped it. I won't if there's a game available next time I'm up there. :-)

By the way, no one mentioned Ovechkin's incredible defensive play last night, like that slide in front of the net early in the third period to block a shot (I don't remember from whom). He was a perfect all-around player--the complete package. His leadership and humility were the icing on the cake.
