Tonight's Lineup

Jose Theodore will start in net for the Caps and will face Ryan Miller tonight at HSBC Arena. As suspected, Karl Alzner (bruised hand) and Donald Brashear (bruised leg) are both out.

Here's the rest of the lineup (based on warm-ups):

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Nylander-Clark
Bourque-Steckel-Fehr
Giroux-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Collins
Schultz-Green
Sloan-Jurcina

Check back later for my post-game notes and quotes.

Game is up on CSN and CSN-HD, looks like widescreen instead of HD, as expected. Enjoy the game, all! Let's go Caps!

(I'm getting some momentary glitches on CSN-HD... is anyone else getting that? Just trying to see if it's local or widespread.)

Praying for OV to take over 1st in goals tonight

A nice road win would be fantastic before coming home for four straight. I think it'll be Backstrom's night for no reason in particular.

---------
The Caps have to play with an edge and some grit tonight. Ugly goals will win this game. Laich needs to run his rig through the slot. Traffic in front cleaning up the trash will give 2nd chances, 'cause 1st chances won't make it in.

Posted by: Greg S. | December 30, 2008 1:34 PM

Ah, yes. Laich in the middle, and rebounds. Scores? Laich in the middle and Bourque's first on a rebound.

@MNMNT:
Not sure if the question was directed at me, but I have followed hockey since that wonderful first season, when we got all of 8 wins.

My father took me to my first game at the Cap Center/USAir Arena and at that game, I saw Harland Monahan (sp?) score on a penalty shot...I thought that was something that just occurred all the time in Hockey games...

I am more a fan than a student of the game.

If this is not directed to me, just ignore my little trip down memory lane...

Greg, this is another traffic in front of the net goal. If they finally figured this out, it's the next to last piece of the puzzle falling into place. The last being clearing our own crease against teams like Philly, Detroit, etc.

Posted by: TimDz | December 30, 2008 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Hey all,

Not sure if this has been brought up before. But I got to thinking. So many people don't give us credit because of the division we play in that I decided to see how many games we have played so far against our division versus the other top two teams in our conference.

So far, we have played 7 games against our division. The Rangers have played 9 games, not counting the games against us and the Bruins have played 11 games, not counting us.

Not saying that our division is strong, I don't think it is. I am saying, we have gotten this high up without playing against our "weaker" foes as mauch as the other top teams.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | December 30, 2008 8:35 PM | Report abuse

@CT we play our division A LOT the second half of the season. we do have an easy division, but you know what, it doesn't really matters. Playoffs are playoffs. Having an easy division just means a higher chance of getting that guaranteed division winner spot in the brackets.

CTCapsPhan

Because the Caps can't get any love from any quarter. Specially north of the border. They don't like the US up there, and resent their loss of control over their game to the US. That and they don't think there should be hockey in any place that doesn't get frozen lakes to skate on.

Posted by: Greg S. | December 30, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

don't you mean usa up 7-0...wow..maybe we beat 15.

So THAT's what I have to do to get all the ladies? Be Chris Bourque? ;)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | December 30, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I know we play the division more in the second half in fact mostly the last few weeks. My point was that we are getting points against what is considered "tougher" teams. Theory would have it being we can catch up in points when we play those "cake" teams while the others are playing a "harder" schedule.

@steveo

Dude, have to agree 100%:

Giroux proving why he is a tweener...great in the AHL but can't quite make it in the big boy's league

Schultz, although I don't despise him as the idiots who sit next to me during games, he is too slow and not physical enough.

Good team win. Jose could not be faulted for either of those goals. Green was out of position in center ice for the first; Jose steered a rebound to the side, but an unmarked Sabre was there for the putback on the second.

Backstrom's been playing amazingly well, but you don't really see it all the time unless you're looking for him. Good defensive play. Good take-aways. Then the things you do see with the assists and occasional goals. He's had a great December.

3 of 4 goals were rebounds/garbage goals.

It was a nice win. Good work for most of the game...about 50 minutes. Still need to learn to keep the foot down on the gas pedal, though. It should have been a shut-out but for that, and CapsSkins jinxing JT.

12-0 final, the ref pulled a Bill McCreary (it was him, right?) and knocked over a defenseman, except this time behind the net instead of during a breakaway.

The USA outshot Kazakhstan 61-10.

when you look back at this time last year, the improvement is monumental. They couldn't get by with their minor leaguers last Xmas, and they can't lose with them in, this year. That's a big fat +.
Some nice passing tonight, huh?

Posted by: oo7 | December 30, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse

@oo7

last year standings comparison aside, tonight's game was huge. Great effort (for the most part), great traffic in front of the net, great goaltending, good defense (except Schultz... BB can't possibly play him when Alzner/Poti come back, can he?).

Last year... or even a month ago actually, we probably would have been relaxed and lost this one on a hey-we-won-3-in-a-row-can't-win-them-all kind of game.

Posted by: mauree | December 30, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

GregAnnapolis, *ALL* the girls requires you to become Brooks Laich. But if you'd be content with just some of them, I'm sure CBo would work admirably.
Couple thoughts on the game: 1) Jose looked solid all game, except that last one from MacArthur, which, I guess is forgivable at that point in the game, only. I'm glad he's getting his confidence and playing like the job is his to lose. That said, folks, don't even breathe the word shutout until the game is over. Thinking it is inevitable, but if you don't put it out for the Hockey Gods to hear, they won't do anything to take it away. Please! :-P 2) Those highlight reel goals are nice to watch, but I like these bang it out in the crease goals much better, it shows our team (as if anyone could think differently) is willing to work for a win. 3) I never thought I would worry about Juice, but he had me going there for a second and I have never been more happy to see him on the ice. 4) Joe B & Locker are on something, I'm pretty sure, I don't know how else to explain them. 5) I'm all for AHL seasoning, but as folks said today, Alzner is going to be missed when he has to get sent back down. 6) Matt "MoFo" Bradley is a beast.
And on a sad note, my thoughts and prayers are again with Ovie and his family. May his grandfather rest in peace.

I agree, and another reason that this game was huge was because it has been eons since we have beaten the Sabres more than once time in a season.

Posted by: --Boo-- | December 30, 2008 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is Mike Green best defensive partner - he's not going anywhere. He fits Green like Alzer fits Jurcina. We can debate hits and offensive all night but when playing with Green, you need a stay-at-home defenseman...Schultz fits it well. I see this as the best option, from best purely defensive pairing downward:

Alzer - Jurcina
Poti - Sloan
Green - Schultz

Now, this doesn't mean I think Green should be considered a third line...unless I need defense. I just think these are the best pairings for personnel. It clearly leaves out Erskine and Morrisson...I'm open to ideas.

Posted by: saintex | December 30, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Mauree!

As much as I'd like to catch Boston, they can lose against anyone but the Flyers and Pens. Those two teams, I hope they defeat quite soundly. Tonight's 5-2 drubbing on the Pens is a good start. ;-)

Boo,
Have you seen the NHL of VS newest commercial with him in it. "It wasn't the 53 games I played in that took us to the finals, its was the 29 I didn't play in. Twenty-nine opportunities for my teammates to step up and play. That was what took us to the finals." Or some such "I'm not worthy" jibjab. At first, I was impressed that the NHL allowed him to admit he was human, but then I realized they're making him look like a martyr and I gagged.

Just got back from hanging out and watching the game. Shout out to numero94 for hosting at Mister Days, hope you had a great night and found someone to drive you home, buddy :) Great meeting everyone who was there, and if you weren't, well. :)

Great game. That last goal by the Sabres kind of sucked, I wanted Bourque to get the GWG.

Bourque got his first, and it was a sweet goal, too. That one was a combination of a couple of great shots and Buffalo's defense being slow off the hop. Congratulations to him!

Another solid game for JT60. Looking good so far ....

My condolences and sympathies with Ovi and his family for the passing of his grandfather. I didn't know before the game, but I thought he seemed a little off tonight - only 4 SOG and another 4 attempts? Ovi was not his usual self tonight by any stretch of the imagination. Here's hoping he's back to his usual self soon.

Also, +1 on what jmu_capsgirl said. Never, EVER, utter the word "shutout" while a game you're watching is in progress. Thinking it is inevitable, but don't even breathe it. It is the word that shall not be spoken until that final buzzer sounds.

I would like to know if there is another NHL team out there that 1)has been on a winning streak in spite of so many injuries; 2) has as much depth in their farm team as the Caps have in Hershey and, 3) is able to have seamless transitions from minor to major league playing.

Are such stats kept? I have only seen a passing reference to the Caps' depth and the role Hershey is playing in it.
