Glad to see Bourque in the lineup again.

I'm guessing since we are playing Tampa, the Caps aren't in a rush to get some of our injured players (Semin, Brashear) back in the lineup.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 6:54 PM | Report abuse

cbs75:
I hope we're not taking Tampa for granted. That's when the Caps add an L. Boudreau should be warning the boys about that.

I managed to convince my gf to watch the first period :D

Online stream is:

Hope the boys won't take Tampa for granted, they're on a roll. I'll tell you later about the game I went to yesterday (CBJ @ ANA).

Let's GO caps. Keep the 2008 momentum going in 2009!

Capt_Kirk_in_AZ/mauree/Tess:
Thanks for the link - I'mm good!

Joe:
There were SOME seats with good views ...

Great first shift for the Bourque/Steckel line.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | January 1, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Hey all,

Thanks for the link. Not sure how long I'm here for - got to be up in 6 hours for "work"

Lets go CAPS!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Get in! Seany Collins!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

go collins!!! that's awesome....another goal for our Bears!

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

beautiful passing play!!! now this is the way to start off 2009!!!

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

STECKEL = LIGHTNING KRYPTONITE!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2009 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Of course Stecks scored - its Tampa! Lovely pass from Brads.

"Hi Tampa, I'm Dave Steckel. Can I play you every week?"

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Just like Alzner has brought out the best in Jurcina, it looks like Bourque does so for Steckel. Great chemistry between those two.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | January 1, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

pitt-boston 1-1. i am still torn who i want to win, but with one more carolina win and a pitt loss...that makes them one step closer to not making the playoffs!!! here is to a heavy bodycount in that game!

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

I don't think the Caps are taking Tampa for granted. They came out hard and took a quick 2-0 lead. Now leads keep building on it and get Smith pulled.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

bruins 2 pitt 1

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Re: Steckel and Bourque...
They played together alot when they were both in Hershey. We used to laugh because they look like Mutt & Jeff on the ice but it seems to work. (Am I showing my age with that reference?)

Oh, Greenie just scored. Yay!!!

Posted by: tess2201 | January 1, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

nice shot greenie

Posted by: goskinsgo | January 1, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Hehe!

Greenie was due.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

ov to greenie...this teams passing has gotten considerably better in the last few games!!!

Dave:
There you go workin' again ... when will you get your priorities straight?

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 1, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

nice D - even theo would've shut them down
@capsskins - it's a no brainer - pitt/philthy/nyi - i hope they lose every game from now to forever. caps will have to gain ground on the B's some other night.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Bernie,
I meant to ask you earlier. You said you worked for Orlando in the IHL. Where you there when Kris Miller played for them?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Capt Kirk, is fun watching Pitt lose night after night.

Boo,
Yeah, career getting in the way of sports again. I'm off to bed soon.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

@Dave: grab another pint, sit back, prop your eyes open with toothpicks if you have to - it's the caps - you could probably catch a nap at work tomorrow anyway

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr, I'm a bit behind the comments, but I prefer "Static Guard Steckel". :-P

Good first period. Hope the boys don't take their foot off the gas. A blowout would make for a great start to the new year!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 1, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see Ovie getting a couple of PRIMARY assists, unlike the NHL's saviour, the Queen of the secondary assist.

Posted by: rw-c | January 1, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Dave,
I do remember Kris. He played D and was there for only a season. Do you know him?

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 1, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Bernie,
After his one season in Orlando he came to England and played for the Manchester Storm for 5 years, was part of the Storm's most successful team. Nice guy, met him a few times. Think he's a cop now back in his native MN.

CaptKirk,
No beer left after last night unfortunately!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Dammit

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 1, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

two odd man rushes.

second goal was nylanders fault.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 1, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

I cant wait until we move Nylander!!! I put that last goal on him. As I type, Matt "Terminator" Bradley cover Nylanders butt.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Smith almost gave one up like that in the 1st. Should have learnt from his mistakes.

Thats it for me - nite all.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 1, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Matt Bradley! *swoons*

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 1, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Dave,

Oh that's right. He was born in Bemidgi and played at Mn-Deluth. He wore an old MN-D t-shirt under his gear for good luck, lol. Glad to hear he had a good stint in Europe.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 1, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Brent Johnson goin down to grab the stick, might as well make a save while Im down here...ho hum

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

@dave: that's just poor planning :) - i've got a second fridge in the garage primarily to hold beer

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

is giroux just unlucky or can he just not put it in the back of the net?

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

I don't know what Giroux's problem is. He was on our top line in Hershey, 18G, 12A in 25 games.

Posted by: tess2201 | January 1, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

those are two of the weakest penalties i have seen those last two against the caps. refs should get fined!

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

worse call of the season!!! nice save bj!!

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 1, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

boston 3 pitt 1. i hope crosby breaks a nail!!! hehe.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

capsskins: i doubt he will - i've heard the acrylic in his powder blue polish keeps them from chipping

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

THESE REFS SUCK!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 1, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

not a good 2nd period. they better come out in the 3rd ready to finish those pukes.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

wow...we had better come out on fire in the 3rd. the refs suck and we are looking very sluggish in our own zone. not a good recipe for a victory.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Typical. Blame the refs when you don't know the game.

Posted by: MKadyman | January 1, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

On that non-icing call, I didn't notice that a defenseman had a chance to touch the puck before it crossed the goal line. I'll have to rewind the DVR.

dear santa

for belated xmas this year pls provide mike green and jeff schultz some clue on how to play defense in the nhl

signed

caps goalies

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 1, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

It's apparent that the officials want to decide the outcome of the game. Those clowns are terrible.

Posted by: Puckdawg69 | January 1, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Well that was a lazy effort for the Caps -- better come out with some fire in the 3rd if they want to win

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

oh and pls put nylander on another team, he can't even get more ice time than Gordon and Steck

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 1, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Refs ain't doing us any favors, but the Caps need to find that killer instinct. OV and Backstrom score in the 3rd to put this game away.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Could it be that they're "Showcasing" Michael Nylander tonight? It sure does look like it to me.
Again. I REALLY LIKE CHRIS BORQUE.

Posted by: Puckguru | January 1, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Getting out muscled by Saint Louis -- what a half a$$ effort. Sloppy dee play in the second and Nyls was weak on the puck as usual.

Looking forward to OV opening a can of whup on the Bolts

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

@mkady...umm yeah...because green took down the player before the puck. still hungover from new years or just watching a different game?

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Lets go boys! Gotta come out hungry and get that fighting instinct back. The refs can blow all they want. Let's put pucks on net and play some stronger D.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 1, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

maybe they are showcasing nylander, but unfortunately you cant hide his salary. i think that and his age are what's keeping him here now, not necessarily his play. but someone will want him at that cost closer to the trade deadline. hopefully we'll have feds back at full strength by then.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | January 1, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

i would actually the the penalty shot over the PP.

it was adam hall.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 1, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Let's go! PP time!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

The Caps need to pick it up. There are still able to score.

We need this PP to work.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 1, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

alright -- another pp. hope this one is a bit more successful

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

these guys look hung over

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Green looks hungover and the PP just looks like crap. Somebody get the Caps a bunch of 5-hr energy drinks.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

I agree with BJ -- where are you guys -- see him shurg his shoulders twice at his defense just watching the puck float in the zone

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

what happened to heward?

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 1, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

that does not look good.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 1, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Oh pls be ok. No one wants to see this.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 1, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

looked like he was slipping when OV hit him and maybe tweaked something with his neck.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

that doesn't look good...

Posted by: Greg S. | January 1, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

i didn't even think OV hit him that hard...looks to be a freak accident. hopefully it is like rothleisberger and it is just a concussion and they are taking precautions.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

is heward awake? what's going on? i hope he is ok - i always liked him.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 1, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Didnt Heward end Kevin Colley's career by a play along the boards?

Posted by: ButterSchultz | January 1, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

His feet never moved that I saw -- I pray that Heward will be ok

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

I thought too it didn't look like that hard of a hit. I think it's more the way that he fell.

Boo, I think he was out cold. gosh, I hope he's ok.

Posted by: tess2201 | January 1, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

boy, Heward dropped like a rag doll right after the hit

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 1, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

boo:
didn't look like much on the replay.
light check into the boards from OV.
he went straight down.
never saw him move on his own while the worked on him.
he was taken off strapped to a backboard.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

That didn't look that bad... weird

I hope he'll be ok. Hate to see that

GORDO - empty netter

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 1, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Boo, they transferred him to a stretcher and wheeled him off. Looked to me like his eyes might have been closed, he certainly wasn't moving. I missed the original hit, but the replay looked like it was just an awkward hit and he didn't really try to protect himself, whether he saw Ovie or not, idk.
Tocchet's going to break out the bungee cords and tie Smith to the net I think. Either that or one of those proximity shock collars.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 1, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

didn't the replay almost look like it was a delayed reaction...it looked like OV hit him and then a couple seconds later he dropped. i really hope it is just a concussion.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Smith is no Brodeur that's for sure.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 1, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

thanks for the recap guys. sounds like he got a lot of applause - a lot of people at the VC clearly know and love him. i hated to see him go when he did - he's always struck me as a good egg. i hope he's ok. anyway, thanks again.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 1, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

My feed dropped, and when I got it back 5 minutes later they were wheeling Heward off the ice on a stretcher. What happened?

Posted by: theGelf | January 1, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Geez, if Smith stays in his net and stops playing stupid, this game is *much* closer.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 1, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

hmmm...as bad as we look...or maybe as hungover as we look...it is a good thing we are playing tampa bay tonight. let's steal this game and regroup for the rangers. they won't let us off this easy!

btw for those not watching on TV...the just said that heward was taken to sibley which they are translating to it hopefully isn't as serious as first thought since that is one of the farthest hospitals away. it seems it is a concussion they just said.

Posted by: CapsSkins | January 1, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

PR dept says it's a concussion. I hope it is at worst that!

Posted by: Greg S. | January 1, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

I'll try that again. He was taken to Sibley which is not a trauma center. Washington Hospital Center and Howard (closer) hospitals are trauma centers. So that might be a good thing. But Dr. Shaffer practices at Sibley.

Posted by: MKadyman | January 1, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

i think tocchet had the over on this game.

not sure who had a worse night, smith or the ref who blew the penalty shot call and missed the recchi goal. i'm glad they blew the horn to stop play on that one. it was so obvious.

anyone who complains about the caps d needs to take a look at tampa and say at least we don't look like that.

here's hoping heward is a ok. good guy. i remember when he got the skate across the face. some ridiculous amount of stiches needed to close it.
