Tonight's Lineup
It hasn't happened often this season, but Caps Coach Bruce Boudreau did not have to shuffle his lines and pairings. No new injuries means he's going to use exactly the same lineup tonight that he used in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Rangers.
Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Nylander-Semin
Fehr-Steckel-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Defense
Schultz-Green
Alzner-Jurcina
Collins-Morrisonn
Theodore
Johnson
Some other pre-game odds and ends to get you ready for tonight:
*Asked what he expected from the crowd tonight, Boudreau said: "In the past, before the playoffs, Philly had a lot of fans down here. It will be interesting to see how that ratio is tonight."
*The Caps have outscored opponents 25-9 in the first period at home this season. No wonder they are 17-1-1 here.
*Three Flyers -- Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and Simon Gagne -- are tied atop the league in shorthanded goals with 4 apiece. If you recall, the biggest goal of the teams' previous meeting was Carter's shorty late in the second period after a Mike Green turnover at the point.
"The really attack the points really well," Boudreau said. "And once there's a turnover, they are gone."
*In the past 30 minutes, I've seen almost the entire Washington scouting staff come through. So the team's organizational/pre-draft meetings must be about to begin.
*And finally, when a reporter asked Richards, the Flyers' captain, about Boudreau's comments, Richards had this to say moments ago: "I think it's kind of a joke [but] whatever. If you need to fire up your team by saying something like that, then you have a bigger issue. We didn't run it up. It was [7]-1. What if Washington comes back with four goals, three goals? They could easily do that. What are we supposed to do, not try to score? If you're going to use something like that to fire your team up for a pretty big game ...what does that say about your lineup?"
Is it game time yet?

What does it say about your lineup? It says they are going to come out in a fiery rage, and you'd better be ready Richards, you a$$hat.
Posted by: ThisGuy | January 6, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse
Someone has to be in Richards face all night. Eliminate him and the Flyers fall. OV, Backie, whoever...every time he touches the puck-whack him; every time he starts yappin' at the refs, push him. Get in his kitchen and everything will fall into place.

All this talk over the past 3 days has lead to a playoff-like atmosphere - better believe both clubs are feeling it. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the home locker room before the start of this one. I just hope they don't come out over excited and make any foolish mistakes by being too aggressive. The first 10 minutes of this one should be interesting.
LETS GO CAPS!!

Good question, Mr. Richards. We should answer that and then we should ask what it says about Philly's lineup to be questioning the lineup of a team 5 points ahead of it in the stands... (and tit for tat ad infinitum).

Richards is 100% correct. Why should any team lie down for another team ? its stupid. If someone else said that about the Caps our fans would accuse them of being "whiners" . well we come off like whiners now. I'm glad the Flyers kicked our butts because hopefully it lights a fire and we come out real strong tonight. And that doesn't mean just a lot of shots on net. It means treating this like a playof game and doing everything in our power to beat them on the scoreboard and beat them up physically. I don't see it happening but at least Boudreau's comments have added extra fuel to this rivalry!

Wow! Would have prefered an 8-0 beatdown for sure, but what a game!!! Hate to say it, but the Flyers have another thing I wish we had more of: a real presence in front of the net in Hartnell and Knuble. Their goal was a direct result of Hartnell's screen.
Watched the game on the Philly broadcast. Most bizarre return from commercial ever; Jim Jackson, the local play by play guy, leads Bill Clement in with a comment about the game. Clement responds with a rhetorical question on the color of Jackson's pants and whether the audience will ever get to see them. Huh? I miss Joe B.

...and ESPN.com noted the atmosphere inside the Verizon Center tonight:
"The most startling turnabout, however, was the atmosphere in the arena. Throngs traveling from Philadelphia usually match the home fans in noise if not in number, yet for the first time in memory the Flyers faithful were a minor blip when compared to a playoff-intensity Capitals crowd that sold out the building for the sixth straight game and ninth overall. Last year on this date, Washington had exactly one sellout for the entire season."

Well, they have elbowing, kneeing. I guess a 2 minute minor for biting unless they draw blood when it's 4? Loss of digit is an automatic ejection. Biting an ear is an automatic date with Tyson in the ring.

GREAT game. Theo played great. We had awesome energy, but Green and even Ovie made some really scary, questionable pass attempts. If our offense isn't firing, those things will burn us. I hope we get the Pfailers and the Peennies (my new name for the Pens) in the postseason and WHIP 'em both.
Posted by: kevbnyc | January 6, 2009 11:44 PM | Report abuse
Just got back as well.
Any update on Clark? After OV was a little, anxious? I didn't see him much after.
I really hope the boys can adjust to that pressure. The Rangers put a couple guys in the zone Saturday, the Flyers brought them there and in the neutral zone. That's going to cause some trouble in the postseason, depending on the opponent.
VC got loud, but folks got their late (I think). It was like a Laker crowd, disgraceful. Glad to hear them make up for it later.
Nice to get the two points, though there's stuff to work on ahead of Columbus and Montreal.
BTW, Boston hosts Ottawa Thursday, Carolina Saturday and Montreal Tuesday.

Just got home and settled. (had to throw laundry in.)
Thoughts -
- Theo was the man tonight. Period.
- Fehr-Steckel-Clark was the best line on the ice tonight.
- VC was seriously loud tonight. Any Flyers fan who thinks Washington has forgotten had better think again - and it will be a long time before they forget. That's just how it is, guys.
- O was choppy as hell - what was with all the missed passes? I think the ice was kind of sloppy with the humidity, judging from how much the puck was bouncing all over creation, but there was an awful lot of people not noticing where the puck was, and it was very disturbing. Hope Boudreau works on that.
- D was solid as a rock. I hope we don't have to send Alzner down.
Overall ... closer than I'm happy with. I don't like being shellacked that badly and then come into our own barn and barely win. That's not cool. But still, two points is two points and I'll take the W and run.
And yes, we've got stuff to work on, but you know what? We've got a couple of days to do it now.
Posted by: kittypawz | January 6, 2009 11:58 PM | Report abuse
I agree with Kittypawz on her thoughts of the game.
I don't agree with those who thought of this as a great game, far from it, the only line that played consistently well, in my opinion, was that of fehr, steckel, and clark. I thought semin played well and created some wonderful opportunities, to me he is the best player in this team, I would like to see him play with Kozlov rather than Ov, I think it will be a better tandem. For whatever reason, I thought OV was not himself or did not play as well tonight. I don't think Richard's statement about OV should be dismissed on its entirety, I don't mean on the dirty play, I mean on OV's tendencies to concentrate so much on hits.
