Tonight's Lineup

Jose Theodore is expected to face Ottawa propsect Brian Elliott tonight at Scotiabank Place, the Caps' last game before the all-star break.

The Washington lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Semin
Laich-Steckel-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Scratches--Nylander, Fehr

Defense
Erskine-Green
Alzner-Helmer
Schultz-Jurcina

I'll check in after the game with some additional notes and quotes.

Fehr needs to play more!

Lets go strong into the break. What am I going to do for a week....?

Posted by: Leeguru | January 20, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Is it any wonder why Ovechkin scores so much? He has 101 shots more than the next closest player (Carter).

Posted by: DaleDUI | January 20, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

See my long post at the end of your previous one: please send us some Semin coverage, somehow...A feature would be nice. Regular post-game (translated) quotes would be amazing.

Does anyone disagree that he is our second best player? Does anyone know how, say, he and the team integrate (or do not)?

Thanks in advance!

LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

@Leeguru

I was thinking the same thing....no Caps hockey for a week!!! Argh. Good thing I am making the trek up to Beantown next week to take in the game!!! Woho!!!

(REPOST)

datysukian (dăt-SŪK-ēē-ŭn) (adj.): like or pertaining to a European-born forward possessing totally sick all-round hockey skills playing for a team that has won way too many Stanley Cups. (see: Datysuk, Pavel).

@Leeguru
I am with you, play Fehr until we see that blue chip come out! Also, a week with no real hockey is going to be real tough.

@DaleDUI
Shooting is a big part of the/his game. Thats what make him so dangerous, besides...how else would he score? It takes an awesome player to get his kind of production EVEN with those shots.

@kjm1971
Semin may be our most talented player actually he just doesnt have that "something" that OV has that brings the best out of a player. IMHO. I see him talking to non-russian players on the bench sometimes, I think his english isnt that bad. I think he doesnt like the spotlight, and as long as he scores, we can let OV do ALLLL the talkin.

wtf_e_fehr,

That's interesting. What would stop him from congratulating himself to Tarik after scoring, or setting up, a game winner?

Either way it's interesting. And if he's going to go around scoring 40 goals for a Cup contender, AND he knows English, then he's going to need to start showing up in the quote sheet. (And he'll be well paid for his trouble.)

Or he's totally bizarre etc. and I seriously doubt that.

from a previous discussin of the S-word: for some reason (don't ask why) i thought the S- word was "schultz", definitely should have read all the posts. :)

one week without hockey is going to be so boring, but here's to a strong victory before the all star break !

GO CAPS!

@ DaleDUI

Those are just the shots on goal. Think about the Number of shots missed or blocked. Most players do not have the time or space to get the number of shots he does.It all goes to his awesume ability to create space.

wtf_e_fehr:
i agree - semin has the most talent on the team. i think he handles the puck in the tightest places better than anyone else in the league that i've seen.
kjm1971:
well paid he is - even if he never says a word. i'm afraid that next year (his RFA year) he'll start yappin like a five year old that never shuts up. i would see that as a bad sign - like he's ready to move on and be the 'star' on some other team.

Again, have to break this up to find where blog won't let met post:

I'm going to keep piling onto this Nylander chatter. To me, it's important to establish expectations and not overestimate what a player's production should be.

In an ideal world, the one my wife lives in when she watches the Caps play, every player would produce the kind of points Ovie does. In reality, the first, second and third (and fourth) lines will produce differing amounts of points. Most of this is due to match-up issues vs talent, and a good portion is due to playing time and chances with the man advantage. Right now, the caps are paying decent cash to their top 3 centers, with one getting 3 min more ice time per game than the other 2.

One gets paid 4.8, another 4 and another 2.5M per year. That's 11.3M of this team's cap room tied up in our top 3 centers.

Looking at PIT. THIS year alone, they have 11.7 tied up in their top 3C's. Next year, they'll have 21.5.

NYR: 15 tied up in just 2C's.

NJD: 12 in their top 3.

TB: 11.4.

CAR: 10.9...

I'll do a few more.

Detroit, the model of excellence in this league is so excellent because of the value of their contracts and the paycuts players are willing to take to play there.
They have 11.5 tied up in their top 3C's (per their depth chart, not listed position).

SJ: 15.1

BOS: 11.9

I could keep going, but the game's coming on soon, so I'll wrap up the point of my post.

Sure, we want all our players to produce up to their pay grade. We get elated when players produce above their pay grade. We have also said that a blind monkey could get 50 points a year playing with AO. The reality is, of the top 4 teams in the league we pay out the lowest $$ for our top 3 C's. Why does this matter? The team is winning. We could play at less than a 50% winning rate for the rest of the way and still make the playoffs.

There are a couple things I do want to caveat. Could we use Nylander's @5M elsewhere? Could it be used to keep Alzner up the rest of the year? Yes. Is he producing at 5M a year? No. I'm not blind. I know he's struggling. I have my feelings on what the reasons are, as do all of us here.

But it all comes down to this team's depth and what I feel we need going into the playoffs. Feds being like 50years old, battling a wonky ankle, do I really trust he can play the rest of the year injury free? Am I comfortable with David Steckel as our 2nd line center if something happens to Feds or Backs? Am I comfortable with moving Koz off the top line, or relying on Laich's flukey faceoff percentage going into the playoffs? Nope to all of that.

As to the Alzner issue. Do I think we will lose our playoff spot without him in the lineup? Absolutely not. He's great back there for us, but I do not believe he's required for us to make the playoffs. Remember, when rosters expand we can bring him up for the playoffs. We'll have him here when it matters. When we send him down, Poti's going in his place. That's not a major detriment to our blueline like some people believe. Also, if we kept him here the rest of the year, he's going to play (hopefully, with long playoff push) close to 82 games in his rookie campaign. That's a lot of games for a rookie who's not played that much. I kinda think a brief stint back down in chocotown will do him some good. Let him rest a bit and get ready for our playoff push.

Keeping Nylander gives us depth. Would I be sad to see him go? If we can get something in return (cap space + pick/prospect) then fine, go for it. I'll be happy and just deal with reduced C depth and pray Feds can finish. Until then I'll hold my expectations in check for our third line center.

haha, are any of you watching the same game I am watching? Theo is on his way back to his bad side? How do you figure? Erskine pushed the guy right into Theo so he could not get back to cover Heatley shot - the other goal went in off Shultz's skate...

Is there another game on?

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

You people kill me...

These goals are NOT Theo's fault...
2 bad penalties...

Theo was block from moving laterally on the 1st goal and there was deflection on the 2nd... Both were very improbable to stop.

Theo was out of the crease.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 20, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

well second goal was unlucky, and Caps did well on the PP... a good second period can launch us back into the game.

Posted by: mauree | January 20, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Just to clarify - Theo was out of the crease for the first goal. The second goal was not his fault.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 20, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Boo - what does that matter? He was challenging a shot. His heels were still in the crease. You can't expect Erskine to push a guy into him. Erskine should see where he is pushing and if he pushes him into Theo, then he should become the goalie and move over and try to block Theo's shot.

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

block Heatley's shot - my bad.

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Boo... When you come out of the crease you reduce the amount of open net that shooters have... The play was not close the shot came from the right slot, Theo was in the right position.

Posted by: JSchon | January 20, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

question-
yeah, it looked like someone pushed into theo on that first goal. does it not count as goalie interference because erskine (so says the person above, i'm not sure?) is the one who pushed the sen into him?

Posted by: jess4caps | January 20, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

828:
He should not be that far out with Sens on his doorstep (it's not like he was alone down there). And I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that both of his feet were well outside of the paint. I standby what I said - I think that one is on him. But what do I know - I'm just an armchair "center".

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 20, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

I've never been a big Jose fan, but I can't really blame him too much for either. Hopefully we can stay out of the penalty box a bit more for the rest of the game.

Posted by: FedorovCrunch | January 20, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Erskine pushing a player into the goalie is NOT goalie interference.

Posted by: JSchon | January 20, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

because Erskine pushed the guy into Theo, it's not goalie interference.

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

If your teammate chucks the opposition into the goaie, it's not interference. Aren't we well versed in that after the playoffs last year?

It did look like Theo was out of his crease.

JSchon:
"When you come out of the crease you reduce the amount of open net that shooters have." Thanks for the lesson, but I knew that. My point was that I don't think that is a smart strategy with the opposition right on your doorstep.

mike green is horrible at that blueline with the puck. One clear turnover on a 5 on 3 that killed that PP. How does an alleged allstar player turn that puck over with such regularity? And being up 2 men on a PP is unforgivable. I'm not sure but I think he was the player who also took a premature ill=advised shot a few seconds before instead of setting up the PP from the point. He missed the net and the Sens were able to clear. U SUCK GREEN! I'd like to see Steckel get some PP time. At least he does the dirty work that no one else is willing to do.

Posted by: Section117 | January 20, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

We praise them when they play hard and win and we praise them when they play hard and lose. I thought they played pretty hard tonight and I think the "they shouldn't have been in a 2-2 game vs. Ottawa" argument is infantile. You know what? They were. And then they didn't give themselves a chance.

Posted by: saintex | January 20, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Makes perfect sense that Semin made a bad play - to blame the WHOLE game on Semin does not make any sense. It's typical Caps... they always do that - nothing new and yet they are still 4th in the NHL. Gives the Caps fuel when they play Boston and Detroit - I'm not worried.

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Caps need to focus on their PK. It's been their achille's heel lately. The game wasn't lost by Semin. The game was lost due to dumb penalities and a suspect PK.

don't reason with idiots. Gets you nowhere. Some of the tools on this board namely

-jschon
-section117
-randinno

all these morons can do is make excuses for the skill players no matter what they do on the ice. This is what they subscribe to:

-Mike Green shouldn't have to play defense because he does pretty things with the puck (unless he's turning it over every shift!)
- Alex Semin can do no wrong (for the same reasons)

we had 3 of our top skill players (all russians) take hooking and holding penalties in the 3rd pd. That's just lazy unmotivated hockey.

Posted by: kevbnyc | January 20, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Its very frustrating to watch the Caps play against teams like Ottawa or the Islanders, teams that are not exactly preforming very well. We always seem to have such an unnecessarily hard time playing them, or like tonight that we just don't really seem to care about the two point until we're down 3-2 in the last minute. Sure, we were outplaying them in the second, but we should be dominating them the whole game, not just for 10 mins in the 2nd and the last minute. We need to dominate these "easy" games because down the stretch, every point is going to count. That is when dropping points against easy teams is going to come back and haunt us. We need to remember that we don't get to play these teams every night, we also have to play teams like Boston and Detroit. I guess its a question of experience, we still have a young team, i'm hoping that they'll learn that every game should be played like it means everything, not just the ones that actually significant. Once we can do that, that's when we'll be ready to win the cup.

Reasoning? Rational? Haha, you serious? You say Green sucks and yet he is one of the top scoring defense men in the league and all you do is bash him. He turns the puck over and he wins games - he's fricken 24 years old... same goes with Semin. I am not going to bash my team because of their youth... that is the difference. Then, we get comments that Theo is back to his old ways or Semin is back to his old ways... because of one game. Where was this talk when we beat the Pens or Boston? Who knows, maybe you all thought we were in RED tonight... I have no clue.

Observations from tonight's game:

GOAT OF THE GAME: Semin's penalty was dumb but honestly it's our penalty kill and I put that on Boudreau's shoulders because I hate this stupid passive box crap. You get aggressive and attack and don't give your opposition time to set up and think about what to do with the puck.

BOUNCES: Simply put they didn't go our way. Second goal off Schultz's skate and game winner was a lucky follow up. Kudos to the guy for staying with his blocked shot.

DEFENSE: Green continues to be a headache and a risk at times almost turning the puck over but hey I'll take him anyday. Schultz needs to pick up his game. He has no shot from the point.

PLAYING ON THE ROAD: This team is not the second best in the conference when you go on the road and play down to the level of two teams they should've beat period. Islanders game was luck and the Sens game - with the exception of a kick ass second period they played like crap. There is no excuse. You look at teams like Boston, San Jose and Detroit that the Caps are mentionoed with. One difference - the Caps are .500 on the road at best while those other teams are four or five games or more above .500. Boudreau better straighten this team out on the penalty kill and this team better show more effort on the road in the second half of the season.

They come out like they did tonight - in one week at Boston and they'll get lit up. Two points closer they could've been to Boston tonight not that it really matters...time to step up in the second half of the season. For now a little fun in Montreal.

@alpca3877

Totally agreed, and I think that's what is really sticking in my craw.

Yes, the timing of the penalty sucked, but it's the fact that Semin just doesn't seem to be maturing that kills me. His all-around game is certainly much improved, he's racking up points at a ridiculous clip, and is a threat to score on pretty much every shot. But you can still count on him to take a lazy/stupid/inopportune penalty every other game. And with his plus/minus, it seems clear that getting caught out of position is not the issue ... he's just plain taking bonehead penalties. Inexplicable and exasperating.

we didnt get but 1 even strength goal in 8 periods. although i guess the comment during the game was about us not getting scored on even, it goes both ways. 828 admitted that plainly with that comment, and then seemingly tried to call us out for pointing out the same thing he agreed with.
all good i guess.

The sky is falling.Ahhhhhhh. It will be o.k.
Ottawa players get paid to show up and play the game as well. They have been playing alof better lately.

We need some work on the PK and some brushing up on the PP ( we could have iced the game earlier with a PP goal or two)

The next two games will be a good measuring stick.

I'll take Mike Green any day of the year, and day of the week. Some of the MK bashers have NO CLUE to talent.

The good news we have not given up a even strength goal in over 3 games........lets think about that and enjoy the All star game!!

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | January 20, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Semin was much worse with the penalty's last year. It seemed like every game he was guaranteed a hooking call. Maybe two

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 20, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

The first Sens goal was a trademark Theo overplay...yeah he was slightly interfered with, but how many gaping open nets does he leave wide open? The other two, can't really fault him for, though the GW was a little soft.

Who else had their season flash before their eyes when Ovie went down on the Fisher knee? Ouch.

I guess BB liked the Flash-to-Steckel play since it seems that after that moment, Flash and Laich switched lines.

Clark was again invisible out there, with the exception of a penalty he drew. He's just taking up space at this point. Make a play!

Though he didn't play much in the 3rd, props to Brash tonight. He was a beast.

ralCapsFan, no worries - was not trying to be rude just trying to support my team.

Here we go again though: ...but it's the fact that Semin just doesn't seem to be maturing that kills me. ...But you can still count on him to take a lazy/stupid/inopportune penalty every other game.

Semin has 37 pen min in 30 games played... remove 5 for fighting and 10 for the game misconduct and you have 22 pen mins. I see him improving - tonight, it was just bad timing and took a dumb penalty. I wouldn't call it lazy as he dove to trip him.

richmondphil,
Not sure what I admitted to, but the Caps scored 3 even strength goals against the Pens, 1 against Boston in a 2-1 game and none against the Isles in a 2-0 game... 2 tonight in a 3-2 game. I am confused where the problem is?

Posted by: _828 | January 20, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

@828

Agreed, not lazy on this one. But damn stupid. I can admire the gumption in trying to make a big play but he got caught going the opposite direction as the offensive player and dove as he was going past, taking the Sen out with his arm. Not a high percentage play.

And no, I don't know how the numbers work out, so I wasn't trying to be accurate in saying he took a penalty "every other game" ... if you looked up the stats, I'm sure you're right that he's actually improving in how many penalties he incurs. But it's the nature of the penalties that continues to irk me, that's all.

Hope the boys get a nice rest! Poti will be a nice addition...almost like a FA.

terrapin2930,
I hear ya... I def think it was a stupid penalty, but like someone stated before - he cost us the game. He is young, that is going to happen - that was my whole point. And yes, I have the stats, he's on my fantasy team! He def does not take as much as he used to.

As expected, this team ALWAYS plays down or up to their competition. When will they learn.....

Is it me or has our special teams play taken a nosedive since our injured regulars have returned?

So, I guess the writers of this Blog are also off for a week. We definitely dont need help covering ALL the Caps involved in the All-Star festivities.

...and there's the other one.

@_828, IMHO Semin didn't cost us the game - it was our inability to kill penalties or to score on the power play. For example, when we had four minutes of power play at the end of the second period. What were we 0/5 for the game?

this was your original comment in response to him.
"ralCapsFan,
Considering the Caps have not allowed a even strength goal - I think that's pretty solid. Need to clean up the PK and should be pretty stout."
to me, that is very plainly admitting that we did not get even strength games. as i said we only got 1 in the last 8 periods, i already broke it down. you agreed with ralcaps with that comment, and then seemingly tried to call us out for pointing out the same thing in which you first agreed with. i dont know what was said during the live feed, i didnt watch the game because i wasnt home. im not arguing over what was said during the game, i just dont understand why you went out of your way to try to call people out when you agreed with the comment yourself at first....
its not really a big deal, i just didnt really understand it and dont appreciate people getting on top of a pedestal over nothing.

Let's move on, folks - from this conversation and that game ... I think we've beaten it to death. The break will be good for the guys (and based on some of these posts, maybe for us! ;-)). They'll learn from the mistakes of the past couple and come back stronger. I'll be counting the days until our next game and our next big win. Go Caps!

I'll be at the Vc for the Redwings game.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

richmondphil - can you not read? Or are you reading that as "can you read"?

Considering the Caps have not allowed a even strength goal - I think that's pretty solid.

Where does that say the Caps have not SCORED an even strength goal?
