*deep breath* And the man at the back said everyone attack ....

Showtime, or nearly so. Come on boys. We know you can do this. Show us what you got. Two points. Make it happen. In regulation preferably.

@atybat

Thanks for letting me know what Ovi was looking at. I did quick and dirty translation to get the comments on that page, for what its worth alot of "female dog" comments...

I liked the one on the right, and I think Ovi did too.

New season starts tonight, stretch run, clean slate for guys to prove they deserve to play here.

GO everybody, EVERYONE here wants to trade!!! (WHY? Because we win and maybe you trade dreams come true)

GO CAPS!!!

Hey, Nyls has a finisher working with him if those lines are solid. A finisher, a mucker, and passer = Opportunity...

Loved Savard during the ASG, but now I'd love Ovi to give him a friendly slam into the boards.

What are the odds we see Brash and Lucic throw down tonight?

Fellow Season Ticket Holders... I managed to win the "Ice Skating at Verizon Center" lottery (I'm in Slot 2), but I will be unable to attend. The guy who is taking my tickets for Sunday's game does not own ice skates. Even if I could make it to the game, my back is messed up and I have enough fun walking, much less skating. When I applied for the passes, I had expected I'd be able to skate by now, but that's not going to happen.

So I have two passes (NOT tickets to the game... these are passes for the special event after the game), available free of charge to any current season ticket holder. (I didn't pay for them, so I refuse to charge for them.) I just feel weird letting them go to waste, and I figure maybe there is someone out there who missed out. It's my good deed for the year. ;)

You gotta give Thornton some credit on that shot, it was pretty.

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

brash to the box.

Posted by: saintex | January 27, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

why did BB break up the second line of Flash-Federov-Semin. It was my favorite line! I think a line of Laich-Nylander-Clark isnt a bad 3rd/cycle line...

Posted by: ThatGuy2 | January 27, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

some credit?

it was a nice backhand.

@kittypaws

a game isnt a game without ovie whiffing on at least 20 shots/passes.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

give brash credit (not much) but at least he's trying to make something happen in front of the net

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 27, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

well done on the PK

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

good call _fehr....go nyls.

Posted by: saintex | January 27, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

do i have to eat my words 'cause the line just scored? hahaha. BB knows best (but i still love the flash-federov-semin line!)

Posted by: ThatGuy2 | January 27, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Okay. Good start. Very good start. Got 40 more minutes to play and this is by no means ours. Keep it up.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Flash looks like he's playing with a lot of confidence, I like it!!! Congrats to Nyls too of course

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

yeah

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

rachel: Because *EVERYONE* is excited when the Caps score, duh....! (Actually I was wondering the same thing myself.)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

the line really didnt matter.

give all credit to flash on that one for not giving up and playing a full 20.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

BB better break out the milk and graham crackers - a quick nap between periods will be needed so they can go a full 60 tonight

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 27, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Shoot, if BB don't know what he's doing then I know what I'm doing. Nice first period.

Posted by: saintex | January 27, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

lucic was flying around just before that goal, i think the sexy lumberjack or the donald may have to straighten him out

Posted by: _stevo | January 27, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

im waiting to see lucic v brashear RD 1.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Flash's confidence is matched by Shultz's LACK of confidence with the puck. He looks like a call up.

Posted by: TJ91 | January 27, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

i'll take that twenty minutes. the PPK was good, the PP was good, a few missteps (Ovi! and Schultz!) but you pay your money and take your lumps.

Posted by: saintex | January 27, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

i hope clark get one tonight also, we need nyls and clarkie for the second half of the season

Posted by: _stevo | January 27, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

I must say, the PK looked better. lets hope the next 40 go the same way.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | January 27, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Backs was on the PK there at the end with Bradley. OVi was in all star game mode on his give away.....he will "get it back".

Hate the Versus coverage...they were talking about what they had on there cheeseburgers while players were getting plastered along the boards.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | January 27, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know the NHL record for SOG in a season?

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

why is schultz on the pp? krecjt just made him look dumb

Posted by: _stevo | January 27, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Okay, opening 2nd, another PP - make it sexy guys and go hard to the net.

Nice Alzner. Not.

Backstrom please shoot that. Stop being fancy. Less passing pls.

Any thoughts on sitting Brash against Detroit? He's taken two bad penalties in two games and Detroit doesn't fight.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 27, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Hey, it's our power play and they had 2-3 shots on Theo. What's up? At least Theo is looking good.

Posted by: caraveli | January 27, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Most shots on goal, one season: Phil Esposito, 550 (1970–71)

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@goskins

its in the 500s. i know ovie will come close this season.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@kittypawz

I agree about sitting Brash. Against a team like Detroit, you need as many guys who can actually score as you can get. You also can't take stupid penalties, especially with our PK not being the greatest.

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Why did Ovie turn over the puck twice just now? Has he been doing it more than usual lately? Why?

Posted by: caraveli | January 27, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, IRTR! I'm sure Ovie will break it. Maybe this year maybe not, but he's got a lot of years ahead of him!

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

I'd definitely consider sitting Brashear... he's not doing very well right now, and we don't need to be taking stupid penalties. Not from a guy who only gets 10 minutes or so of ice time to begin with...

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

all brash is is a role player. if we have no use for his role, than he should be scratched.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

caraveli: I think he might still be in All-Star mode. He needs to STOP being cute. It's getting annoying.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 27, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

oh jeez that was too close

Posted by: abuddy2004 | January 27, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 27, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

That was Theo and whoever pulled that puck out of Theodore's crease. That was a team effort to keep that out of there.

@jmu_capsgirl and Kittypawz
The guy who saved Theo was 91, Federov. It would have been a score had Federov not cleared the puck, there were two Bruins there with a wide open net.

I think the first goal was due to OV's sloppy play and Theo's slow reaction.

OV seems to be having a bad night.
WOW! a Terrible night, he just crashed the boards.

Still playing like a woman's team, whaddya bet Boudreau lights into them. We have too many pansies to compete in games like these, unless they can step up and play physical.

Posted by: gtydings | January 27, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

I'm guessing if Ovie shows signs of a concussion, they won't let him back in even if he says he feels fine. Is that true?

Posted by: benguiin43 | January 27, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

just saw the reaction in the tunnel...is he mad because he knows hes going to be out? Or is he mad because he did a bone headed thing that might have gotten him seriously hurt?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 27, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

gtydings, Not to jump on you, but its not that womens teams can't play physical, our leagues won't allow it.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 27, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

@goskins1982 - If he has any sign of a concussion, I suspect they won't let him back on the ice tonight, but they're saying possible shoulder injury. He looked pissed, though, going to the dressing room, and that's got to be good...

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

They will not allow anyone back in if there are any signs of even a mild concussion.

Not a great night for Ovie and the guys are running out of steam in the second period. They need to step it up for us to win or tie. We started out so well. I have a sense we will have a strong third period, especially is Ovie is okay.

Posted by: caraveli | January 27, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

I'm sorry Schultz but I still don't like you... You were asleep on the first goal. It wasn't Theo's fault, he was just surprised you just watched Thornton pass by.

Brash, I have been defending you but you really need to do something in the third.

(I'm talking as if the Caps read the blog during the intermission lol)

Posted by: mauree | January 27, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

as i person who has experienced 4 concussions (1 major) his look while he was on the ice was like he had a concussion, you can get up and walk away from a concussion. the next day is what the problem is

NOW do you get my info -- especially for the newbies. Late Feb can't get here soon enough.

Update (Ovie injury impact)):

Don't worry about Alzner he will be back for the stretch run (told ya he would be back):

Is anyone more excited than me about the beginning of the stretch run?

Looking Ahead: Really really Good News UPDATE!!!

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabers (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run...no rush to rush back Poti.

Posted by: windjammersouth | January 27, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

@benguiin43 - He looked a little stiff in the shoulder, but I wasn't seeing agony etched on his face, like the last time I saw a bad shoulder injury... He just looked sore, and pissed that they were sending him to the locker room...

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

irockthered, I think Versus was pretty much guessing on the injury. They made that call based off the video alone, which basically means they have exactly the same amount of info we do.

They just have a national TV audience to air their guess to. ;)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 27, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Semin, Nylander, Green, Jurcina, Federov, Backstrom...ever seen 1 of these guys initiate a hit.

JMU I watched many a women's game, I understand the rules, but the Caps play like it is illegal to hit as well.

If Ovechkin plays for the Flyers and he goes down like that, there is a rumble.

All the Caps had is Erskine shoving.

That is why we lost in the 1st round last year, and won't go far this year.

thought his shoulder took the brunt of it on the boards. But when he slammed his gloves and then his helmet, the shoulder apperared to be o.k. Just hope its not anything serious.

Posted by: jogabonito | January 27, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

i thought collar bone when it happened. then he tossed is gloves off in the tunnel. don't think he could do that with a shoulder injury. didn't look like his head took the brunt of it though. we'll see if he comes out for the warmup skate before the third. i'm going with the 5 minute 'upper body injury'. hopes he's back for the final 20

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 27, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: benguiin43 | January 27, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

He'll play if he can. The rest of the boys will pick it up if they need to. I think the Caps blast the B's in the third period. Frustration will come out early with a few penalties but we'll pull this out.

@GregAnnapolis - I'm sure they were too. And so am I. Guessing, and being very very hopeful.

@gtydings - As for why we didn't rumble? There was only a hook; Ovi lost his balance. We didn't rumble after Green got hit, because he got hit legally by Chris Pronger. What are we gonna do, jump somebody else because our star player lost his balance after getting hooked? Yeah, that's good.

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

it couldve been bad, but he jammed it with his shoulder instead of his head.

i predict he will be back to go for the third.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Chara's hook contributed to the incident, but it wasn't like he cheap-shotted Ovie. This wasn't Darcy Tucker boarding him.

I think the Capitals' reaction was fair. That, and they didn't want to blow their PP in a tie on the road with a team they are chasing.

Posted by: ThomasJefferson | January 27, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 27, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

@gtydings - I understand the difference perfectly.

If the hook had *just* been a normal, ordinary, every day hook like we see three or four times a game, and Ovi hadn't lost his balance, he would have been fine.

Ovechkin was skating at great speed, and the hook did not take him in the knee that went down on the ice. HE LOST HIS BALANCE. The hook didn't "cause" it; he was overskating to try and dodge the hooker, and went down.

Do you understand my point now?

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Boston is playing like the rest of the NHL post All-Star break.

Posted by: gtydings | January 27, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

windjammersouth, Stop. We realize you're excited about the stretch run and are trying to impose a little bit of sunshine into a cloudy hour. We've seen it a hundred times and just because you change the heading on it doesn't not qualify it as an update. If you're trying to bolster our support of the stretch run, take each game and break down how you think it will play out. Try a new game every time you feel the need to post the schedule. Consider the possible ramifications of trades within the league. You can't just say "Ovie injury impact" and then post the same drivel again. Actually take the time to consider what impact Ovie's "injury" will have on the team and post something that is well thought out. If I really wanted to see the schedule, my browser has a conveniently placed button that brings it up. I realize you're not wasting much of your time, but you're certainly wasting ours. So I ask you once again, respectfully, to stop.

So how? HOW!?

irockthered. shocking, it was against the flyers.

The toughest player on the Los Angeles Kings, Holt had been acquired mid-way through the 1978–79 season to add muscle to a skilled Kings team, and was expected to be a factor when the team travelled to Philadelphia to face off against the fearsome Flyers. After picking up a minor penalty early in the first period, Holt fought Philadelphia enforcer Frank Bathe at 14:58 of the first period, picking up 20 minutes in penalties. However, Holt felt that he had been a victim of a cheapshot from Flyers' agitator Ken Linseman earlier in the game, and at the end of the first period instigated a bench-clearing brawl in an attempt to settle the score with Linseman. He was assessed a further 45 minutes in penalties for his actions during the brawl, including a triple game misconduct, bringing his game total to 67, shattering the previous NHL record of 52 set by Jim Dorey in 1968. He was also suspended three games by the league for his actions.

I have a feeling this game will go to OT...not good... just as long as it doesn't end like the ottawa game...

Come on hurricanes!!

Posted by: rachel216 | January 27, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Even more important than scoring is holding them to no more than 2 goals. At least we can get at least a point and have a chance at OT if we keep them from scoring.

Come on guys. We are out-shooting them but we have to set up plays and get Tim on the rebound. What agony. I can't bear it for another 8 minutes. Way to go THEO!

Is anyone more excited than me about the beginning of the stretch run?

Looking Ahead: Really really Good News UPDATE!!!

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabers (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run...no rush to rush back Poti.

i though that penalties in OT the teams went back to 5-4? am i wrong or does that only occur if there is a carry over from the 3rd into OT. 4-3 is alot different than 5-4.

Posted by: benguiin43 | January 27, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

@thesmurfs
i highly doubt that. but anyway, ovie fell and slammed his shoulder into the boards. if he wasnt able to adjust himself there at the last second, it wouldve been head first and lights out.

but go on thinking that he faked it...yeah.......

Posted by: richmondphil | January 27, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Now Steve-o it is not nice to call people circus freaks.

Posted by: windjammersouth | January 27, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone else hate the 4-on-4 in OT? I understand they started it to avoid ties, but now that we have shootouts instead of ties, I think it's totally pointless. Then, they call a penalty, and it seems like a 4-on-3 is infinitely harder to stop than a 5-on-4.

Posted by: goskins1982 | January 27, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

How does anybody figure we outplayed Boston? SOG don't always tell the story. Boston had better scoring chances, won the physical battled, controlled the puck much better and played better in their own end.

I'm happy with the point and to see Ovechkin is OK. Ovechkin, by the way, was awful in the 1st 2 periods. Other than setting up Green's goal, he was a turnover machine. He needs to clean up that part of his game and I think he will over the next few years.

Posted by: kevbnyc | January 27, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

better news -- we get the Bruins twice if you count 22 games from the end of the season.

I'd better start including that one in the info so that we don't lose sight of the puck.

Posted by: windjammersouth | January 27, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

I don't mind the 4-4 but over the weekend I thought I heard some body mention the posibility of ot penalties only becoming 1min not 2.

Both goalies should earn stars. That was a great night of goaltending.
Glad we now have the tie-breaker over them, though. Theoretically, their schedule is much tougher than ours for the rest of the season, so we should still be able to catch them.

Posted by: FedorovCrunch | January 27, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

@TheSmurfs - Whatever. I'm with richmondphil. Ovechkin skates HARD. It's a good thing he did manage to adjust himself there. Even the announcers said he didn't have much time. The man moves like a cat! And that was not faked.

What makes you think he faked it?

Why would anyone in their right mind take a dive INTO the boards?!

It's lame when a great effort is lost due to a questionable penalty which results in a 4 on 3 in sudden death. I don't care if you disagree, thats just my opinion and obviously you have a different one. The other poster who said 4 on 3 is much different than 5 on 4 is very correct. It's almost an assured point, which in sudden death means an assured win.

Posted by: benguiin43 | January 27, 2009 9:36 PM
---------------------

@beguiin43: The AHL is doing that this year as an experiment. A penalty called in OT is 1 minute. A penalty called in the 3rd that carries over to the OT is reduced by half [for instance if 40 seconds of the penalty would carry over, it suddenly becomes only 20 seconds.]
I've only seen happen once or twice, and can't decide if I like it or not.

i've not seen many games outside the caps, but i've not seen another team that passes, breaks out, and transitions better than the bruins. you can not relax against them and you can't make stupid, lazy passes against them (and we know the caps can make such passes). that said, the caps seem to match up well with them and play them well.

i missed a good part of the first period, but anyone got any complaints about the way number 4 is playing? he looks real solid to me.

Then, to begin the overtime period, he has the gall to put John Erskine out there, of all people. Come on, now. John Erskine? John Erskine?!! I'd REALLY like to hear his explanation for THAT move.
Also, I've been saying this all season. I do not like the pp. NOT ONE BIT! Way too much tic - tac - toe. Not enough slam - bam -thank you Mam. To me, The Flyers have the most effective pp in the league. They ALWAYS have at least one guy two feet in front of the goalie. not like the Caps, with Kozlov The Coward stationed out of harms way, 20 ft out. What a joke.
And, it makes absolutely no sense to put Nicky and Nystrom out there ( On the pp ) at the same time. Again, too many slicksters for my blood.

i didnt want to really bring this up, but backstrom shouldve had enough intution to lift that puck up above Thomas's diving blocker. of course, things happen in the heat of action, but usually backstrom is able to get the puck topshelf in that situation easily.

And, one other thing. I've said it a zillion times and, guess what ----- I'm gonna say it AGAIN. The overall mentality of the Caps is that of a collective bunch of sissies. your Franchise player goes down, AND NOBODY DOES ANYTHING. NOTHING!! That's why winning The Cup is merely fantasy thinking. That's why Philly whipped their butts last April. No guts. No guts, no glory. It's just that simple.
Schultz, Morisson, Nylander, KOZLOV THE COWARD, Alsner. Basically, the whole team. A bunch of p---ies. Period!

It was a very well played game. Who outplayed who...is not relevant. I had issues with alot of what both teams did. The bottom line is the bruins got the extra two points and they were already up by 10 in the standings. Opportunity lost.

Game Observations:

What a classic. Tough way to lose. But Theodore is the #1 star in my books. What saves by both goalies. The game lived up to its billing. A job well done.

Semin is lucky he wasn't sitting in the box again watching another game lost late. Also Schultz if he can be packaged in a deal - be done with him. Size is one thing but no speed or blast from the point is another.

Ovie simply doing what he does - playing with a passion.

Boston was lucky to win but we can beat them in their place that's why I could care less if we catch them or not. One more meeting in Boston. Just have to take the positives from this game.

Penalty kill - Boudreau still drives me nuts keeping this team in a passive box. This team needs to be much more aggressive and attacking in its own defensive zone. Again still looks like they're standing around letting the opponent skate on the perimeter too long. Step up and put a guy through the glass.

Back home for the Red Wings...another classic on the horizon.

sucks we lost, but that was one hell of a game - especially after not getting to watch the caps for a week. if backstrom finishes in OT, we feel differently right now. sick save from Thomas.

really wish they would change the 4 on 4 in OT, only because if either team gets a penalty, its almost a sure goal. seeing Chara waiting from so far inside the blue line to unload a 105mph slapper is scary.

at least we got the point. Theo played one of his best games of the season tonight. look forward to the Red Wings!

@PuckGuru: I'm not sure what you're rant was about the team not doing anything after Ovechkin went down. Yes Chara hooked him but if he had hooked him then pushed him into the boards at full speed - believe me you would've seen an all out brawl but everyone saw it.

Plus if I remember - Erskine - whom you're going off on actually went at Chara and they had to be separated. I admit I've had reservations about Erskine as the season has gone on but since his return - he's been solid and is a physical presence out there on the ice.

So I'm not sure if your post was more out of just frustration from losing this game or not but seriously this team has Ovie's back but he lost his edge after the hook - it's not like Chara took advantage of it and pushed him into the boards either. I'm only saying so don't jump down my throat.

I like the moniker too - Puckguru has a nice ring to it. :)

@ irockthered,
Yes, I've been watching Erskine lately. His entire career, actually. 4 on 4 hockey is NOT THE TIME to have a player like him on the ice. If you knew even the basic rudiments of the game, you'd know that. 4 on 4 hockey is the time when you put your best "Skill" players on the ice. Why? Because there's so much more room to maneuver with 2 less bodies out there. That pal, is as basic as it gets.
I have absolutely NOTHING against John Erskine. As a matter of fact, he's one of my favorite players on the team. For one thing, he's not a wimp, like most of his team mates. But, his game is not of the "Free flow" variety. Which is exactly what 4 on 4 hockey is all about. Geezzzz

@Puckguru - If you knew even the basic rudiments of the game, you'd know that.

I'm not a "guru," but I do know the basics of hockey.

What I know better than that is the fact that Bruce Boudreau is a FAR better hockey coach than I will EVER be. I trust his decision-making, and you will note, as _stevo said, it was NOT Erskine who sat in the box and made a 4-on-4 into a 4-on-3 situation.

We were doing just fine with Erskine on the ice until the penalty on Backstrom. In fact, we've been doing fairly well with Erskine on the ice since his return.

I'm not going to try and excuse any of the penalties we took tonight; half the time, the camera was pointed somewhere else, so I didn't get a clear view of what happened.

@ludeman95 - You are right; the Red Wings are not given to taking penalties or playing "hardball" hockey. Is anybody going to call the defending Stanley Cup champions a bunch of wusses?

Didn't think so.

As far as penalties are concerned, this season they sit at 2nd-fewest PIM/game in the league, with only 10.4 minutes average.

We are 5th-fewest PIM/game with an average of 12.7, and the Bruins are 8th, with 13.1.

And gee. The San Jose Sharks are 6th-fewest, with an average of 12.8.

I guess the good teams don't need to take a lot of penalties to play well, do they?

Detroit is also #2 for fewest PIMs total on the season, with 479. Oh, and they're ahead of their total for last year. Last year, they had the fewest PIMs in the league, with 426 for the entire season. If that ain't clean hockey, I don't know what is.

Posted by: irockthered | January 27, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

And before someone calls me out for quoting statistics, I'm a research geek. I'm going to hunt up statistics, since I don't have enough hours in the day to watch every single hockey game out there; statistics are easily acquired, and they do show a kind of picture, even if they fall into the category of "lies, damn lies, and statistics." It's interesting to me, which is why I do it. Don't assume I don't know anything about hockey because I pull and quote statistics; it's just one more piece of knowledge that I like to look at and collect. :-)

I had a feeling that when the Caps didn't score on their fifth (!) PP, they were going to lose this game. It's hard to win when you go 0-for-6 with a man advantage. PP, dating back to last year, still needs someone parked in front of the net. This has been said tons of times in this space. I still think giving Clark a shot wouldn't be the worst idea. Just plant him in front of the goalie. He scored 30 goals two seasons ago for a reason, and it wasn't because of his incredible finesse. I know the unit is sixth in the league, but against quality PK teams that won't matter if you can't bang in rebounds. And, with the sorry PK the Caps have, scoring a couple of PP goals a game is important.

Sad to see Semin take yet another late-game penalty and then see Backstrom take a silly one in OT. They're still making untimely mistakes. That's something that can definitely be improved upon. But big ups to Theodore and Thomas. Some great goaltending tonight.

This is a tough loss because of all the opportunities the Caps had. But it's nice they have a few days off before the Red Wings come to town. I think they'll pull that one out. It'll be a statement game for them.

Posted by: CDon | January 27, 2009 11:13 PM | Report abuse

CDon:
Yes, it was disappointing, and you could almost feel it coming, especially with all of the sloppy penalties (will they ever learn?!?). It's too bad that they could not capitalize on any of the PP opps - that could have been the difference maker. Yup, the Caps could have won that one, and they have very little to tweak to take games like that in the future. They have enough time to get their acts together - they still have a good shot at the big dance. And wouldn't it be fun if they got to play a series with the Bruins along the way? Both teams seems to really bring it when the play each other - it would surely be a most entertaining series!!

Anyway, at least Ovi seems to be OK ... that is the most important outcome of tonight's game.

I don't know about you guys, but I am ready for a hockey filled weekend!!!

This is why my life is so exciting. :-) Oh if those guys think that Ovi would really dive and stay down for a second longer than he would have to, then they clearly don't know ANYthing about the guy.

"Just got back from the game. Was stuck next to the definition of a tool of a Bruins fan in the whole stadium. F-ing hairy ape, may he get run over by a bus.

Bruins fans... stay classy. Chanting "bullsh*t" and "p*ssy" when Ovechkin went hard into the boards and booing him when he finally got up. Bunch of no class loser clowns. I've lost a lot of respect for Bruins fans tonight. Yeah, that was a dive all right. He likes to dive head first into the boards at full speed.

When the Bruins scored the OT goal this hairy moronic waste of space grabbed me by my Ovechkin jersey and was yelling something like an insane gorilla. Next time I'll bring a fork with me."

I had no idea your mother lived in Boston. Why did you take her to the game?

@ cstanton1

Since I wasn't acting like a complete a-hole all game long and wasn't bothering anyone you couldn't be more wrong. As usual.

BTW, good job defending a worthless piece of crap of a Bruins fan. If you were in my place I assure you that you would have received the same treatment. The only thing I did to piss this idiot off was wearing a Capitals Ovechkin jersey.

@ caphcky

Oh wow, aren't you tough behind the keyboard... I'm sure you wouldn't even hesitate to take on 5 drunken idiots.

I took your mother to the game and she came home with me for a little overtime. She says "Hi, I liked it... better than your daddy ever was".

The Caps loose a close game to one of the better teams in the league, away from home, on a flukey short-handed goal, 4 on 3, and folks who call themselves "fans" write in with advice for last year's coach of the year, and to let Backstrom know he should have lifted the puck. I have a feeling not one coach or player even reads this crap. Most of what is written here is useless dribble from hockey wanna-bes.

Windjammersouth: As a newbie to Caps ice hockey and being situated here in Los Angeles, even I find your postings annoying. We can do just fine thinking positive on our own without your posts. Thanks.

Puckguru = tool
irockthered = awesome

I'd rather read stats than a tool talking trash about our team and all his shoulda', coulda', woulda's. Our team didn't just roll over for the Bruins. They could hardly be called pansies. A true test - how 'bout we put Puckguru on the ice up against the "pansies"? Should be an interesting way of getting him to eat his words...and a couple of hockey pucks. =X

If taking home the dead is your thing, thats fine but its a little morbid. Quoting my dead mother is a little sick too.
