Tonight's Lineup
Brooks Laich took warm up and all signs indicate that he will play tonight. There was only one change from this morning's lines, as it looks like Laich will join Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Semin on the second line. Here's what tonight's lines should look like.
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Nylander
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Poti
Alzner-Jurcina
Theodore
Neuvirth
*An interesting note, before the game Staffan Kronwall told us that he's actually 6-4 1/2 and 220 pounds, not the 6-3, 210 he's listed at in the guide.

Wow, Eric Fehr has really been playing well the last 5 games or so. Nice goal!
Posted by: MReilly9 | February 7, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse
Sick start. Bad coverage 2 guys going to puck carrier. Now we gotta hold serve after the break...

OHHH what a save by Vokoun on Ovie!
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse
I'd rather see Green cut that to Ovie than try to squeeze that wrister through.

Son of a biscuit.

Let's go boys, don't let FLA get their rhythm.
Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse
I hope the Caps pick up the pace, because this ain't gonna cut it if we want to put this game away. This would be two big big points, plus a regulation win would make my chart a hell of a lot easier to update... :)

And wow, the ice really suffers when there's an afternoon basketball game that runs into overtime. It really makes a big difference.
Joe, Craig... less chat, more hockey. :\

Phew, I take a day or so off from the blog and all hell breaks out.
My big problem with Eric Fehr? There's no nickname. Fehry? Ferhsie? Both sound too much like Fairy. Gotta go with Big Eric.
Great shot Big Eric.
Jose was slightly screened but I think those are the sort of shots he has to save.
Drinking G&T tonight (how British am I? what, what) but I wish I was at Greg Annapolis' house - how many beers!?!

Greg,
I agree, why couldn't they do that interview with the Dep Com during an intermission? Fancy doing it during play!
Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse
Ok to catch up a few points.
No way we are going for Legace or Gerber or any other goalie. I'm excited to see Neuvy or Varly get a chance.
Yosemite Sam,
Hope you pick this up - things can get missed on here - but thats for the nod to the NHL stats page. No idea why I didn't figure that out myself. You sir are a gentleman, thanks.
IRTR,
See Sam's link for Caps all time scorer stats.
Johnny D,
Email on the way.

DaveUK: I've started buying a lot more singles; I found a store in nearby Columbia that is willing to sell individual bottles out of 4 and 6 packs. So I probably have like 20 different beers, but not a lot of any specific one. But I won't lie, I do have one hell of a selection. Beer and Caps; two big hobbies of mine.
I'm just waiting for a big snowstorm or something... I'm totally ready. Who knows if it'll happen though, it was like 60F (15C) this afternoon!

Dave: So how many hours are you ahead of us? 4? 5? 6? It's GMT-5 here, so it's 19:48 (7:48 PM).

Greg,
5. Its 00:55 here now. As my clubbing days are behind me and I no longer got to churchon Sunday mornings, I'm fine to be up this late!
I get my beers from:
http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/
but not sure they ship to the US. Hundreds or German and Belgian beers there though.
Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse
I don't know how much Theo was screened on that shot... but our guy (was he Laich or Ferh?) should have been a lot closer to the shooter. It wasn't a PP, it was 4 on 4.
Anyway, Caps have to pump up the volume.
Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse
Mauree,
As I said, I think Theo was only "slightly" screened - i.e. he should have had it.
Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse
Dave,
I don't know, can't say even from the replay. My impression is that he was more than slightly screened though.
Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse
DaveUK: Looks like a darn good selection on that site, but I can get much better prices at the local stores. That and all my money is in US Dollars. :) It's a shame there's no Dogfish Head beers on there... it's a US beer from Milton, DE (Delaware, on the east coast).

way too far out on pp, we need more in close. We only had one low and he was out of the play. At least run some interference or something. Not much of a plan to have 4 shooters floating high and a cleanup guy.

Dave, it was. That check made no sense and it was really dangerous. What was borderline was the one on Fed.
But it's all good, the major brought our boys together.
117, I know you're sarcastic, but to me the Caps are always on a PK when 55 is on the ice. Useless.
Honestly, we got a bit lucky this game, especially at the end of the 2nd period. But let's take the two points :D

I think yours could do with a service too. My original comment was sarcastic.
Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse
For all the criticism Green and Schultz get from some on the list here, it's really hard to overlook that they are #2 and #3 respectively in +/- on the team. I know it's a stat that can be argued in lots of ways, but it sure seems to indicate that pucks are not ending up in our net as often as the opposition's when they're on the ice. I'd be curious to see what the stats are on PK goals against with them on the ice as opposed to other Caps D-men.

I updated my season series chart; we can take the season series with Florida with a minimum of 2 Wins, one OT Win, and a loss. That third point makes that "clinching record" stuff really hard to figure out... There are many other ways to do it.
We also now have a .500 or better points record against all Eastern Conference teams except PHI. Five EC season series are already clinched: BOS, NJ, NYR, OTT, NYI.
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse
Greg looks like your beer selection tonight worked. Leafs win in Montreal (to a chorus of boos). No points for the Canadiens, Devils, Panthers and only one for the Bruins. 2 for the Caps. I'll take that.

Mauree,
I thought it was harsh, Stillman turns just as he gets there. I'm not saying it wasn't a penalty, just harsh.
That's the thing with sports, not all gonna see it the same way. Important thing was we killed it. Perhaps such a big kill (and the PK getting an 0'fer) gives them the boost they needed.
Nite all.

that kind of surprises me - I think of CHI as one of the hottest team right now. I guess it proves even the best teams can have nights off - so we shouldn't be so pessimistic after a loss :D. Although, it's still early for CHI to come back.
@fn
yes it was one hell of a PK. And FLA is hot these days. We could see from the TV how the whole building was so loud.
