Tonight's Lineup

Brooks Laich took warm up and all signs indicate that he will play tonight. There was only one change from this morning's lines, as it looks like Laich will join Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Semin on the second line. Here's what tonight's lines should look like.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Nylander
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Poti
Alzner-Jurcina

Theodore
Neuvirth

*An interesting note, before the game Staffan Kronwall told us that he's actually 6-4 1/2 and 220 pounds, not the 6-3, 210 he's listed at in the guide.

OVECHKIN!!!!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:08 PM | Report abuse

All right Eric!

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

(I'm blind, it was FEHR!!!!!!!!)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

that makes up for all that fruitless hard fehr work

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Eric Fehr has really been playing well the last 5 games or so. Nice goal!

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 7, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Sick start. Bad coverage 2 guys going to puck carrier. Now we gotta hold serve after the break...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 7, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse

OHHH what a save by Vokoun on Ovie!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

I'd rather see Green cut that to Ovie than try to squeeze that wrister through.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 7, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Son of a biscuit.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Let's go boys, don't let FLA get their rhythm.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I hope the Caps pick up the pace, because this ain't gonna cut it if we want to put this game away. This would be two big big points, plus a regulation win would make my chart a hell of a lot easier to update... :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

And wow, the ice really suffers when there's an afternoon basketball game that runs into overtime. It really makes a big difference.

Joe, Craig... less chat, more hockey. :\

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Phew, I take a day or so off from the blog and all hell breaks out.

My big problem with Eric Fehr? There's no nickname. Fehry? Ferhsie? Both sound too much like Fairy. Gotta go with Big Eric.

Great shot Big Eric.

Jose was slightly screened but I think those are the sort of shots he has to save.

Drinking G&T tonight (how British am I? what, what) but I wish I was at Greg Annapolis' house - how many beers!?!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Greg,
I agree, why couldn't they do that interview with the Dep Com during an intermission? Fancy doing it during play!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Ok to catch up a few points.

No way we are going for Legace or Gerber or any other goalie. I'm excited to see Neuvy or Varly get a chance.

Yosemite Sam,
Hope you pick this up - things can get missed on here - but thats for the nod to the NHL stats page. No idea why I didn't figure that out myself. You sir are a gentleman, thanks.

IRTR,
See Sam's link for Caps all time scorer stats.

Johnny D,
Email on the way.

DaveUK: I've started buying a lot more singles; I found a store in nearby Columbia that is willing to sell individual bottles out of 4 and 6 packs. So I probably have like 20 different beers, but not a lot of any specific one. But I won't lie, I do have one hell of a selection. Beer and Caps; two big hobbies of mine.

I'm just waiting for a big snowstorm or something... I'm totally ready. Who knows if it'll happen though, it was like 60F (15C) this afternoon!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Dave: So how many hours are you ahead of us? 4? 5? 6? It's GMT-5 here, so it's 19:48 (7:48 PM).

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Greg,
5. Its 00:55 here now. As my clubbing days are behind me and I no longer got to churchon Sunday mornings, I'm fine to be up this late!

I get my beers from:
http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/

but not sure they ship to the US. Hundreds or German and Belgian beers there though.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

I don't know how much Theo was screened on that shot... but our guy (was he Laich or Ferh?) should have been a lot closer to the shooter. It wasn't a PP, it was 4 on 4.

Anyway, Caps have to pump up the volume.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Mauree,
As I said, I think Theo was only "slightly" screened - i.e. he should have had it.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Dave,

I don't know, can't say even from the replay. My impression is that he was more than slightly screened though.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

DaveUK: Looks like a darn good selection on that site, but I can get much better prices at the local stores. That and all my money is in US Dollars. :) It's a shame there's no Dogfish Head beers on there... it's a US beer from Milton, DE (Delaware, on the east coast).

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

ballard's shot is pretty wicked though.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

OK, time for a big PP goal. Who wants it?

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

*raises hand*

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Well, no PPG, but I'm willing to settle for an even strength goal. Nice effort by Fehr.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Well, no PPG, but I'm willing to settle for an even strength goal. Nice effort by Fehr, now let's put one *IN* the net. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Vokoun's lookin' very sharp tonight...*sigh*

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

rachel, it's okay. If we keep the pressure like this, one or more will squirt in.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Greg,
You and your almighty dollar!

Mauree,
Maybe but still think he should keep that out and I'm a Jose fan.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

there were openings down low.

There's a team - i forget who - who plays 3 men low on the pp. The Caps should try that as a changeup

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

cmon steckel shg!

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

another lackluster performance?

Posted by: wendel2 | February 7, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Neuvirth is SOOO cute!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Stoll on the PP for the Kings in NJ. LA up 1-0

Come on you Kings!!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

he's a dreamboat.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

:)

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

We're lucky to be tied right now. Darn it.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

mauree, no kidding. I hope the boys wake up for the 3rd period.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

That one would have been hand-pass.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Weiss is a retard.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Kings now 2-0 up

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

way too far out on pp, we need more in close. We only had one low and he was out of the play. At least run some interference or something. Not much of a plan to have 4 shooters floating high and a cleanup guy.

Ovie loves the 3rd pd scoring...
:)

Posted by: austinsteve | February 7, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Kings up 3-0 on the Devils, 4:11 left in the 2nd. Most recent goal was off a penalty shot.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

OVI is staying too much on the ice every shift.

Kings winning it's not much of a help if we don't win this. They're 15 points ahead of us.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Mauree,

You know the Kings are playing the Devils right? The Devils aren't 15 points up on us mate.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Gotta step it up in the 3rd! :D

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

mauree, the Kings are playing NJ, not BOS. But still, need the two points here.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I LOVE GREENIE

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Clearly Green should be benched...

Posted by: Section117 | February 7, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Great pass. Great shot.

Posted by: Wiked | February 7, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

He now has a 6 game goal scoring streak... new Caps record for a defenseman is 6... NHL record for a defenseman is 7, I think they said earlier.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Wendel,
Just noticed your post. The Caps haven't lost yet, you're early.

Let hope they win for many reasons but mostly for the fact it means you stop posting.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

hahaha you're right I was confusing it with this afternoon game sorrie sorrie

Greenieā„¢ goal!

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Greenie is seriously on fire!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

What was that from Semin?

Posted by: WCAPS1 | February 7, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

This would really suck if Panthers scored here. Score would be tied 2-2 with us having 20 more shots.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

hey dave glad u can read tell me how dominate we are and your usual load of bs

Posted by: wendel2 | February 7, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BONDRA!

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm told that the fan of the game was in my row, and the guy using my seats managed to get his hand on the jumbotron. Woo. :P

Come on, go Caps! Really big kill here. Feds, please don't get a second minor for unsportsmanlike...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

wow Feds is pissed, hopefully our PK unit can hold them off.

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Ah, crap.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

great.

PP for the rest of the game even if they score once.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

OMG, i hope we didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot!!

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm sorry but this should have been called, and it should have been a major. Stupid, stupid move by Mo.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

HUGE kill here

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

5 on 3 killed LETS GO!

dont get to excited, 3 more minutes left.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

There's a surprise, bad penatly at the end of the game.

(rollseyes)

Mauree, agreed, stupid penalty by mo

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Stupid, stupid pass.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 7, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

that was a horrible pass poti.

almost paid for that one.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

it wouldn't be the caps, if they didn't get a stupid penalty in the last five mins of the game *sigh*

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

This is some freakin' insane hockey. Holy smokes. I don't think I've taken a breath in four minutes!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 7, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

yes Greenie !

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Still a lot of hockey to play, need to keep this up, go Caps!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Mike "Game Over" Green.

Mauree, Mo's was definitely a pen but not sure it warrented 5 mins.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Clearly he (and Schultz) should be benched...

Posted by: Section117 | February 7, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Tonight, the PK has been the best all season long. Very well done apart from some clearing issues.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 7, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

We held them to TWO shots in a 5 minute powerplay, 1:05 of which was 5-on-3? Holy crap! GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

hats go off to the penalty killers!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 7, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Yes...THIS is a team that lacks enough heart and grit. Huge win.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 7, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Night Wendel

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Theo gets a star!! it's about time =)

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

not sure?

it was from behind, right next to the boards. that is how you end careers. Mo should've received everything he did.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Dave, it was. That check made no sense and it was really dangerous. What was borderline was the one on Fed.

But it's all good, the major brought our boys together.

117, I know you're sarcastic, but to me the Caps are always on a PK when 55 is on the ice. Useless.

Honestly, we got a bit lucky this game, especially at the end of the 2nd period. But let's take the two points :D

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

MIKE GREEN ISNT HUMAN....HE CANT BE REASONED WITH...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 7, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Verizon Center was AWESOME the last 5 minutes, that was SO loud even on TV, can't imagine it live. That was a great game, my heart was beating SO FAST for the last 5 minutes, wow, finally took a breath once Greenie scored!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, and hats off to the PK, it was really awesome :)

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Thats the end of the "Games giving up a PP goal" too. Lets start a PK streak now.

Hats off to Davey Stecks at the end there, clear after clear after clear. Good lad.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

The Devils are going to lose to the LA Kings. This is very good news for the Caps in the standings.

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 7, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Kings win in NJ. Not a bad team LA eh?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

"to me the Caps are always on a PK when 55 is on the ice. Useless."

Yeah, useless over the weekend with Jurcina, useless tonight with Green.

Posted by: Section117 | February 7, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

dave steckel = amazing on PK

seriously, he's so consistent and definitely our best PK'er along with Laich and Gordo

Posted by: jogabonito | February 7, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Don't speak like that. on this blog, the Kings are a gutter team who we should walk over.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Phil,
The Kings have just taken out the 2nd and 3rd teams in the East, way from home. Seems to me they can play a bit.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

your sarcasm detector is broken.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

I guess the Devils were playing down to a weaker opponent too huh?

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 7, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Phil,
I think yours could do with a service too. My original comment was sarcastic.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

For all the criticism Green and Schultz get from some on the list here, it's really hard to overlook that they are #2 and #3 respectively in +/- on the team. I know it's a stat that can be argued in lots of ways, but it sure seems to indicate that pucks are not ending up in our net as often as the opposition's when they're on the ice. I'd be curious to see what the stats are on PK goals against with them on the ice as opposed to other Caps D-men.

Posted by: geauxcaps | February 7, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

oh got me too, whoops haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 7, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

The NY Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning are engaged in an offensive shootout with the score 0-0 with about 12 minutes left in the 3rd. Maybe it goes to the shootout - after OT - with the score still tied 0-0?

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 7, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

no...

i give up.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

GregAnnapolis: Yes, there is no need to fear! :) Also, how was Mike Green not named a star?! He should have been 3rd star!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Phil,
So only you can make sarcastic comments and pick others up for not picking them up?

Lighten up eh? I thought we won?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I updated my season series chart; we can take the season series with Florida with a minimum of 2 Wins, one OT Win, and a loss. That third point makes that "clinching record" stuff really hard to figure out... There are many other ways to do it.

We also now have a .500 or better points record against all Eastern Conference teams except PHI. Five EC season series are already clinched: BOS, NJ, NYR, OTT, NYI.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Greg looks like your beer selection tonight worked. Leafs win in Montreal (to a chorus of boos). No points for the Canadiens, Devils, Panthers and only one for the Bruins. 2 for the Caps. I'll take that.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Even though Mike Green has 19 goals, the ESPN scoreboard is showing him with 20 goals? I wonder which goal which another Caps scored got credited to Mike Green.

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 7, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green not named a star?! He should have been 3rd star!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 9:45 PM

Well, he doesn't play defense. Expect him to be benched Wednesday.

Posted by: Section117 | February 7, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

habs lose

good night

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 7, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Mauree,
I thought it was harsh, Stillman turns just as he gets there. I'm not saying it wasn't a penalty, just harsh.

That's the thing with sports, not all gonna see it the same way. Important thing was we killed it. Perhaps such a big kill (and the PK getting an 0'fer) gives them the boost they needed.

Nite all.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | February 7, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Nite Dave, lad,

thanks for understanding it's just a difference of opinions.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Hmm, Huet-Luongo for the nightcap on HNIC.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

And another at 3:02!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 7, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Just came home from the game. The last 5 min were unbelievable. The building was shaking, and everybody (at least in 418) was on their feet. What a PK!!!

Posted by: fnralch | February 7, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

@Greg

that kind of surprises me - I think of CHI as one of the hottest team right now. I guess it proves even the best teams can have nights off - so we shouldn't be so pessimistic after a loss :D. Although, it's still early for CHI to come back.

@fn

yes it was one hell of a PK. And FLA is hot these days. We could see from the TV how the whole building was so loud.

Posted by: mauree | February 7, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

nearly stopped breathing for last few minutes..... the happiness in my home..... let's just say I love Green for shutting them up! (think I may need to move soon,,,) Anyone can tell me what happened with Fedorov's penalty? Florida broadcast just breezed over it.....
