looking forward to seeing what the BBB line can do =] glad that Beagle's been giving a chance to show what he's made of !

waoh nyls with backie and ovie on the first line, glad to see backie back with ovie, but nyls...? i mean he's been good of late, but im surprised feds isn;t up there with ovie. oh well we shall see. so excited for beagle. glad he's getting his shot. love that kid so much. i like the steckel, laich and gordon line, i think that'll be good. flash and fehr on the same line is good, and feds is more perfect for that line then backie so that answers my original comment of why feds isn;t on with ovie. oh well let's sweep the rangers!!!

Semin needs to learn the difference between being hurt and being injured.

Can we call the 4th line B-cubed?
Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 5:37 PM | Report abuse
no i do but i thoughts feds centering for ovie has worked out amazingly as of late. so i thought feds would be with ovie over backie. but i like the lines.

brought forward....
I am curious about this Beagle call up. I thought we brought up players from the minors that were similar in style to the injured Cap he is replacing. Why not Giroux or Bourque since they are scorers, and we have two scorers down in Koz and Semin. I hope someone asks BB/GMGM the question. Also who makes the call up decision? BB? GMGM? Both?

uhm a cube is 4... unless you mean like 4th line cubed. we should call them B times 3, or B to the 3rd power. or 3-B haha ok im done...

capsfan387 -
Nylander has been on the 1st line... nothin new (at least for this game)
Posted by: OVIE81 | February 11, 2009 5:44 PM | Report abuse
Capsfan387, actually cubed is to the 3rd power (like 3rd demension, hence cube), but whatever floats your boat.
Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 5:46 PM | Report abuse
@capsfan387
To me...
B to the 3rd power = B cubed
Mathematical non-geometric reference

giroux hasn't really impressed. he had two breakaways adn couldn't score on either one. I do love me some bourque though. I def want him back up here. BUT I do know beagle was promised a chance by GMGM over the summer. and now seems like a good time. plus beagle is more grit and BB said we need that against a team like the NYR. bourque has some fiestyness to him but beagle has some size on bourque lol. i like beagle. i think it was a good move for now.

Does anybody think there's something wrong with Erskine? I know some don't consider him better than the 6 that are in tonight but he has stepped up him game since his return from injury. Also like someone earlier mentioned about the rangers being very physical and him maybe replacing one of the less "physical" d-men. Please discuss, haha

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse
The Laich-Steckel-Gordon line is pretty impressive from a faceoff perspective...it also will probably be pretty impressive from a "hard working and unable to finish decent chances perspective". Laich needs slightly more skilled players around him to best utilize his skills.

@rachel
when team struggles like the Rangers, they'll play more desperate and play as a team. It's going to be a difficult game.

Here is a question - I was taking a look at the season stats and something popped out at me.
Why does Ovie have the second highest PIM's on the team? He's second only to Brash. He doesn't fight, and he doesn't get game misconducts - so the majority of them have to be stick penelties. What gives?

patrone:
My guess? Ovie racked up a lot of those PIMs when the Caps were down 5 ... 6 ... 7 ... 8 guys. I think he was over-compensating, feeling like he had to carry the team. He has always been an aggressive player, but during that stretch he was crazy aggressive. On top of that, he did not have a lot of opportunities for improvement coming into this season. It seems like he wanted to step up his physical game - that may have led to more PIMs. And as was stated earlier, the fact that he is on the ice more than most may be part of it, as well.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse
wow what is going on?? our defense sucks, everyone is just standing there!!!! all that open space and all that time, they'll score 7 goals... Ridiculous! Rangers had 5 goals in 5 games now they have 4 in 2 periods, grrrrrr

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse
Green stole the momentum back for the Caps. Now they need to finish the deal in the 3rd. I refuse to go to bed with blue-balls.

COme on Islanders!
Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse
facts are facts.
green has the most giveaways in the league for a D man, but he makes up for it. But i get your shtick section117, you painfully implant it in every single one of your comments....
Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse
I propose a new chant at VC. Every time Green scores, we all start chanting "Norris". Who's with me?
Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse
Also, for anyone following the USA-MX, the Mexican captain got a red card following some sort of altercation with the US goaltender (I didn't see it). For those who don't know what that means, it's like a US powerplay for the rest of the game, except it's 11 on 10 instead of 5 on 4. And played on grass, not ice. :)
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse
@rachel
my guess would be that he is doing the intermission interview.
Go CAPS!!! OV needs one now and Green the hat trick!
Posted by: CapsSkins | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse
Green is better than Shultz! GO SJ!!! GO!!
Posted by: majiksea | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse
Seriously,
7-6 in OT with Green giving us 6 (and a hat trick) to tie it, and AO winning it in OT.
Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse
Did the Mexican captain pull a frog and head butt him?
Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse
"Every time Green scores, we all start chanting "Norris"."
For the record, he has as many goals as Crosby does (and 1 more than Iginla, Hartnell or Semin, but you know).
Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse
@richmondphil
lately he's a lot better in that regards, especially since Poti came back. I think he was playing too many minutes before.
Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse
We need to stop with the Green debate. He's an mediocre blue line defenseman and devastating offensive defenseman. We all know this right? Any who presents anything other then that is missing the point. That's what he'll always be. You know what? You can find a bunch of stay-at-home defenseman....you can't find what he's got. I'll take the bad; it's nothing compared to the good.
Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse
@saintex
Thats actually fair. Only...
The hope is that BB is in the locker room ripping a new A-hole for every one on the team, except Green....interview.
So maybe better D?
Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse
We could chant "MVP", but that's our other stud.
Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse
"Also, for anyone following the USA-MX, the Mexican captain got a red card following some sort of altercation with the US goaltender (I didn't see it)."
He came in with his studs and left a nice imprint on Howard.
Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse
well, i don't think that's what he'll always be. like mauree pointed out, he is getting increasingly better. usually people who have the puck more are going to have more giveaways, but you can plainly see green make simple defensive mistakes almost every game. he exceedingly makes up for it, being the best offensive defense man in the league.
Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse
Section117: Ah, classy. Guess he earned that red card, then.
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse
He's an mediocre blue line defenseman and devastating offensive defenseman. We all know this right?
Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM
You should read the Japers piece from a couple of days ago which discusses his Norris credentials. Be prepared though, stats are discussed...
Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

does anybody know the record for most goals scored by a defensemen in a single season? I think its 26. If that's the case, Green will definitely break this. Anyone know?

Paul Coffey had 48 one year I think.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse
At least you can watch it on TV. A friend is a STH and is overseas for a year. He listens to the audio over the internets. He has gotten to see a couple of games on AFN when they broadcast a Versus game.

Sorry Rachel...I forgot to call Nylander before the shootout and tell him to use the Anti-Hasek move...lift the puck more than 3 inches off the ice you score everytime.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse
laich didnt elevate the friggin puck
Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse
glad Ovie got 1, though.
and, what could have been ugly ended up being a point, can't complain too much, I guess
Posted by: bluejeener1 | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse
Well, the way we played overall, I think it was not our best effort. Not the kind of hunger we usually see from the boys...
Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 11, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse
At least Laich can say he was on his backhand...Nylander was on his forehand and just stuffed it into the pads. Got a point at least tough to be mad when we killed ourselves with penalties.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse
Blah! Well, one point is better than no point, and with all those penalties in the 3rd, we could very easily have had no points. For what it's worth, we did win the season series with NYR in points, 7 to 3. (It was already clinched coming into tonight.)
See you Saturday, everyone.

Yea! Now people have something to complain about! ;)

PK did a great job getting us a point tonight. It is what it is...can't rely on a shootout to pull out wins (even though the Rangers do). We'll rock some bells down in Fla over the weekend and all will be well.

It's alright Dave, we are unbelievably unlucky! I hate shootouts! We've had some very heartbreaking and unlucky losses, vs the Canadiens, Ottawa, Bruins. The feeling after those games is the feeling I have after this game, what a crappy way to lose it.

Well, a storm knocked out my recording, so highlights will have to work. Mike Green, hot damn! Way to go, kid! Keep it up! Glad the Triple F line kicked it into gear. Good to see both Flash & Fehr getting goals.

There are some positives to take out of tonight...although we need to stop setting records we seem to lose milestone games 5-4. I'm out till Sat.

Hey 2 games in a row without a ppg against!
Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse
They should make a rule that if the puck doesn't go in on the initial shot, then that's it, we shouldn't lose because it bounced off of Theo!

Alzner looked bad at times, but Ovie was the main focus of the D, and we learned that others can step up big time. Green is wicked with that shot and the two F's were superb. That was a win with 1 point.

It does suck, but remember the goal that won Detroit the Cup last season? Now *that* sucked. Just add them all to the list of "goals the netminder would like to have back" and move on.
Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | February 11, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse
Well 3 D mistakes and they score 3, then Poti hollywood move (lol) and Mo double minor... not the best game for our D.
On the other hand, 2 awesome goals by Green + record...
Not our best game... but we knew the Rangers were desperate.

Obviously positives come out of this game, but overall, it was pretty disgusting. Tough to lose to a Rangers team that struggles offensively (then notches four against the Caps terrible D tonight). I thought Theo was average and Poti was bad. He was constantly out of position. Alzner looked a little lost, too. This Ovie-Backs-Nyls line needs to be broken up. Neither Backs nor Nyls really want to take any shots or drive the net, so it's easy to double up on Ovie. Takes all the punch out of the primary line. Maybe someone like Laich should move up.
Caps needed those two points, but they lost focus in the second period (and in the third with all those penalties yet again). I can't help but wonder if their lapses in concentration will kill them in the playoffs. They're young, but they need to sharpen themselves mentally a little better.

The only time I disagree with bb is shootout lineups. Laich over green? No. Fehr over nylander, I think. Flash over laich, as well. No diss on laich, but other guys were hot tonight.
