looking forward to seeing what the BBB line can do =] glad that Beagle's been giving a chance to show what he's made of !

Posted by: jogabonito | February 11, 2009 5:31 PM | Report abuse

waoh nyls with backie and ovie on the first line, glad to see backie back with ovie, but nyls...? i mean he's been good of late, but im surprised feds isn;t up there with ovie. oh well we shall see. so excited for beagle. glad he's getting his shot. love that kid so much. i like the steckel, laich and gordon line, i think that'll be good. flash and fehr on the same line is good, and feds is more perfect for that line then backie so that answers my original comment of why feds isn;t on with ovie. oh well let's sweep the rangers!!!

Posted by: capsfan387 | February 11, 2009 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Semin needs to learn the difference between being hurt and being injured.

Crud! 2nd time in about 30 minutes that I was zapped by the new thread bug.

From the previous TWO:

Wow! You guys woke Leeguru up! Well done! :-)

Also creepy ...

@capsfan387
Dont you think Feds is better used as a centern than a wing?

Posted by: guer_j | February 11, 2009 5:34 PM | Report abuse

@jogabonito

X2- should be a pretty tough line.

Posted by: Fro_ | February 11, 2009 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Can we call the 4th line B-cubed?

Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 5:37 PM | Report abuse

no i do but i thoughts feds centering for ovie has worked out amazingly as of late. so i thought feds would be with ovie over backie. but i like the lines.

Posted by: capsfan387 | February 11, 2009 5:42 PM | Report abuse

brought forward....

I am curious about this Beagle call up. I thought we brought up players from the minors that were similar in style to the injured Cap he is replacing. Why not Giroux or Bourque since they are scorers, and we have two scorers down in Koz and Semin. I hope someone asks BB/GMGM the question. Also who makes the call up decision? BB? GMGM? Both?

Oh wow, I didn't even notice but Coach put the F-Troop back together

Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 5:42 PM | Report abuse

Looking for good things from that triple F line!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 11, 2009 5:42 PM | Report abuse

uhm a cube is 4... unless you mean like 4th line cubed. we should call them B times 3, or B to the 3rd power. or 3-B haha ok im done...

Posted by: capsfan387 | February 11, 2009 5:44 PM | Report abuse

capsfan387 -

Nylander has been on the 1st line... nothin new (at least for this game)

Posted by: OVIE81 | February 11, 2009 5:44 PM | Report abuse

Capsfan387, actually cubed is to the 3rd power (like 3rd demension, hence cube), but whatever floats your boat.

Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 5:46 PM | Report abuse

@capsfan387

To me...

B to the 3rd power = B cubed

Mathematical non-geometric reference

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 11, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

giroux hasn't really impressed. he had two breakaways adn couldn't score on either one. I do love me some bourque though. I def want him back up here. BUT I do know beagle was promised a chance by GMGM over the summer. and now seems like a good time. plus beagle is more grit and BB said we need that against a team like the NYR. bourque has some fiestyness to him but beagle has some size on bourque lol. i like beagle. i think it was a good move for now.

Posted by: capsfan387 | February 11, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

capsfan387 -

2 to the power of 3 is CUBED

Posted by: OVIE81 | February 11, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

TEB, Kozlov is out too i assume? you didn't mention him with the scratches. thanks

Posted by: Leeguru | February 11, 2009 5:52 PM | Report abuse

injuries suck.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 5:58 PM | Report abuse

So what's the over/under for games before we see Kronwall play?

Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 6:02 PM | Report abuse

If Mo looks bad tonight Kronwall will play the next one, then We'll see.

Posted by: billd2 | February 11, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm going with 21 in honor of windjammer

Posted by: Leeguru | February 11, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Does anybody think there's something wrong with Erskine? I know some don't consider him better than the 6 that are in tonight but he has stepped up him game since his return from injury. Also like someone earlier mentioned about the rangers being very physical and him maybe replacing one of the less "physical" d-men. Please discuss, haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the change Tarik.

Posted by: Leeguru | February 11, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

maybe erskine in over schultz, but i dont think it matters to much.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Laich-Steckel-Gordon? This should be...well...interesting? Not so sure about this move...

Posted by: patrone | February 11, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Here's to hoping Greenie scores for the 7th straight game tonight!!! Come on Green!! :D

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

The Laich-Steckel-Gordon line is pretty impressive from a faceoff perspective...it also will probably be pretty impressive from a "hard working and unable to finish decent chances perspective". Laich needs slightly more skilled players around him to best utilize his skills.

Posted by: Jeff_ | February 11, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Erskine got plowed into the boards sideways with his head down the last game he played, Im also wondering if something isnt hurting with him

Posted by: billd2 | February 11, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

It's gonna be a huge disapointment if we don't win tonight, I'm almost expecting a win because of how the Rangers are struggling right now.

Trap game - See Rangers v. Caps tonight

Posted by: superpaqman | February 11, 2009 6:31 PM | Report abuse

@rachel

when team struggles like the Rangers, they'll play more desperate and play as a team. It's going to be a difficult game.

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Here is a question - I was taking a look at the season stats and something popped out at me.

Why does Ovie have the second highest PIM's on the team? He's second only to Brash. He doesn't fight, and he doesn't get game misconducts - so the majority of them have to be stick penelties. What gives?

Posted by: patrone | February 11, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

LETS GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

35th, +/- 5 or so

Posted by: capsfan77 | February 11, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

One reason might be he's on the ice more than most anyone else.

Posted by: capsfan77 | February 11, 2009 7:04 PM | Report abuse

is this game in HD?

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

ORR landed a couple of punches but Brash definitely owned him there!

Posted by: jogabonito | February 11, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Ovie 9 times out of 10 serves any bench minors as well...someone check and see how many "Too many men"... penalties he gets credit for to beef up his PIMs

Brads doing better than normal.

Bradley doesn't have the reach to be the Caps #1 enforcerv(to start with)

XM guys said Alzner - Juice had -3 last Rangers game. (But that stat means 0 to me)

rachel: TV picture quality varies with arena lighting (that is, the more light, the better the picture)... and I've never seen a good looking game from MSG, so I can only assume that it's just as dark in there as it looks on TV.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

backstrom wasnt even close to him, as a D man always take the front man, let the O catch up to the trailers

Rangers gonna lose tonight cause Boomer's here again

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

patrone:
My guess? Ovie racked up a lot of those PIMs when the Caps were down 5 ... 6 ... 7 ... 8 guys. I think he was over-compensating, feeling like he had to carry the team. He has always been an aggressive player, but during that stretch he was crazy aggressive. On top of that, he did not have a lot of opportunities for improvement coming into this season. It seems like he wanted to step up his physical game - that may have led to more PIMs. And as was stated earlier, the fact that he is on the ice more than most may be part of it, as well.

I have run out of words to describe GREEN, he is so amazing, love him!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Officially Green from Ovie and Backstrom. Green's 7-game goal scoring streak ties an NHL record!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

WHAT THE?! NOO!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: skins1110 | February 11, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Yay, Green!

Who reads lips? What was he saying after he scored?

Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: majiksea | February 11, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

jogabonito:
Aaahhh - that explains it! :-) But I am surprised that you follow US soccer. I thought that all self-respecting football fans didn't give a hoot about the American team ... ;-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 11, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

jen-s: looks like he said 'f--- yeah' but i'm only guessing, of course.

Posted by: jogabonito | February 11, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

ughhhhhhh why can we not hold a lead???? we need to put them away

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

How is that not goalie interference, it looked like he was hitting Theo before the puck crossed the line

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

@ludeman95

no, not even close.

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Two minutes for cheating. Power play, Caps!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

yeah usually Greenies reaction after a goal has a f-bomb involved, haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

green sets the record well done

Posted by: wendel2 | February 11, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

jogabonito:
At least you have your priorities straight ... ;-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 11, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

That was a crap breakaway. Dude was clearly on the ice before broke stick chucker was off. How can they let that play?

Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

the guys are slacking off, they're not hustling like they should be

Posted by: jogabonito | February 11, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

nice clear out schultz and alnzer

Posted by: _stevo | February 11, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

The Caps will have to win this one 7-6, if anything.

Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

4 goals in less than 2 periods to the Rangers...

Posted by: skins1110 | February 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

So much for the Rangers lack of offense. Too many breakdowns.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

wow what is going on?? our defense sucks, everyone is just standing there!!!! all that open space and all that time, they'll score 7 goals... Ridiculous! Rangers had 5 goals in 5 games now they have 4 in 2 periods, grrrrrr

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

you have to be kidding if you thought that was theo's fault

Posted by: _stevo | February 11, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Sadly, this may also be the place where Theo returns to the Theo in the beginning of the season...

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

They just look like they want it more...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 11, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jen-s | February 11, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

of course it wasn't. he was screened like hell.

like i said, i just want an excuse to see meuvrith.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand all the sudden Theo hate. Things aren't going well so we need to find a scapegoat? :P

I still think it's a Caps W, but we'll see!

Posted by: _stevo | February 11, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

green has one of the best shots in the league.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Please, please now, focus on D, don't slack off.

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

But...but...he doesn't play defense...

Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

now im really scared rangers will score again... by the way tonight is going, come on tighten it up!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

No no, I meant the D must focus, not Green :D

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

I hate that buzzer at the end of the period up at MSG, sounds like a pot roast is done.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 11, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

why did everyone go one way and mike the other??

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

@Section117,

So we should probably bench him or move him to forward!

Posted by: skins1110 | February 11, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

mmm ... potroast ...

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 11, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Yeah he's like +24 right now...no D there. It's time for Ovie to take over the game, he's been fairly quiet tonight

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Green stole the momentum back for the Caps. Now they need to finish the deal in the 3rd. I refuse to go to bed with blue-balls.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 11, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

COme on Islanders!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

facts are facts.

green has the most giveaways in the league for a D man, but he makes up for it. But i get your shtick section117, you painfully implant it in every single one of your comments....

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

I propose a new chant at VC. Every time Green scores, we all start chanting "Norris". Who's with me?

Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Also, for anyone following the USA-MX, the Mexican captain got a red card following some sort of altercation with the US goaltender (I didn't see it). For those who don't know what that means, it's like a US powerplay for the rest of the game, except it's 11 on 10 instead of 5 on 4. And played on grass, not ice. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

@rachel

my guess would be that he is doing the intermission interview.

Go CAPS!!! OV needs one now and Green the hat trick!

Posted by: CapsSkins | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Green is better than Shultz! GO SJ!!! GO!!

Posted by: majiksea | February 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Seriously,

7-6 in OT with Green giving us 6 (and a hat trick) to tie it, and AO winning it in OT.

Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Did the Mexican captain pull a frog and head butt him?

Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

"Every time Green scores, we all start chanting "Norris"."

For the record, he has as many goals as Crosby does (and 1 more than Iginla, Hartnell or Semin, but you know).

Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

lately he's a lot better in that regards, especially since Poti came back. I think he was playing too many minutes before.

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

We need to stop with the Green debate. He's an mediocre blue line defenseman and devastating offensive defenseman. We all know this right? Any who presents anything other then that is missing the point. That's what he'll always be. You know what? You can find a bunch of stay-at-home defenseman....you can't find what he's got. I'll take the bad; it's nothing compared to the good.

Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

@saintex

Thats actually fair. Only...

The hope is that BB is in the locker room ripping a new A-hole for every one on the team, except Green....interview.

So maybe better D?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

We could chant "MVP", but that's our other stud.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

"Also, for anyone following the USA-MX, the Mexican captain got a red card following some sort of altercation with the US goaltender (I didn't see it)."

He came in with his studs and left a nice imprint on Howard.

Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

well, i don't think that's what he'll always be. like mauree pointed out, he is getting increasingly better. usually people who have the puck more are going to have more giveaways, but you can plainly see green make simple defensive mistakes almost every game. he exceedingly makes up for it, being the best offensive defense man in the league.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Section117: Ah, classy. Guess he earned that red card, then.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

He's an mediocre blue line defenseman and devastating offensive defenseman. We all know this right?

Posted by: saintex | February 11, 2009 8:51 PM

You should read the Japers piece from a couple of days ago which discusses his Norris credentials. Be prepared though, stats are discussed...

Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Agree with saintex, I think Green will get a hat trick!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Oh my.
I so wish I was watching this somewhere with an actual Caps crowd.
Although virtual is nice, but my neighbors are going to really worry if I scream one more time. whew

Posted by: bluejeener1 | February 11, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

does anybody know the record for most goals scored by a defensemen in a single season? I think its 26. If that's the case, Green will definitely break this. Anyone know?

Posted by: BA7701 | February 11, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

"does anybody know the record for most goals scored by a defensemen in a single season?"

Paul Coffey had 48 one year I think.

Posted by: Section117 | February 11, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

are you serious? The Norris is from here on out an offensive defense man trophy...

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

At least you can watch it on TV. A friend is a STH and is overseas for a year. He listens to the audio over the internets. He has gotten to see a couple of games on AFN when they broadcast a Versus game.

I'll take that bet, rachel216!

Posted by: uncatim | February 11, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Ovie needs to channel that energy into a goal

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

wow can it be gift-wrapped for them any more? Rangers have given up most shorties in the league though...I smell a shortie.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Greg, our defense is just not good enough... o my gosh another penalty, they will seriously score here now...3 straight penaltys,

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Why do we want to lose this game?? We're giving them gifts! and the refs are helping them too.

Second major by Mo

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Mo needs to sit next game, a Major last game which could have cost us the game, and a double minor tonight at a very important moment.... Not to mention Mo cost us a goal already that tied the game. Next game we'll see Kronwall and Mo will sit...Hopefully.

NOT FAIR

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Sorry Rachel...I forgot to call Nylander before the shootout and tell him to use the Anti-Hasek move...lift the puck more than 3 inches off the ice you score everytime.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

laich didnt elevate the friggin puck

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

glad Ovie got 1, though.
and, what could have been ugly ended up being a point, can't complain too much, I guess

Posted by: bluejeener1 | February 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Well, the way we played overall, I think it was not our best effort. Not the kind of hunger we usually see from the boys...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 11, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

At least Laich can say he was on his backhand...Nylander was on his forehand and just stuffed it into the pads. Got a point at least tough to be mad when we killed ourselves with penalties.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Blah! Well, one point is better than no point, and with all those penalties in the 3rd, we could very easily have had no points. For what it's worth, we did win the season series with NYR in points, 7 to 3. (It was already clinched coming into tonight.)

See you Saturday, everyone.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 11, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Yea! Now people have something to complain about! ;)

Posted by: austinsteve | February 11, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

PK did a great job getting us a point tonight. It is what it is...can't rely on a shootout to pull out wins (even though the Rangers do). We'll rock some bells down in Fla over the weekend and all will be well.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

It's alright Dave, we are unbelievably unlucky! I hate shootouts! We've had some very heartbreaking and unlucky losses, vs the Canadiens, Ottawa, Bruins. The feeling after those games is the feeling I have after this game, what a crappy way to lose it.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Well, a storm knocked out my recording, so highlights will have to work. Mike Green, hot damn! Way to go, kid! Keep it up! Glad the Triple F line kicked it into gear. Good to see both Flash & Fehr getting goals.

HEY!

i think postgame live just took a cue from windjammer!

Posted by: richmondphil | February 11, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

There are some positives to take out of tonight...although we need to stop setting records we seem to lose milestone games 5-4. I'm out till Sat.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 11, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Hey 2 games in a row without a ppg against!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 11, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

They should make a rule that if the puck doesn't go in on the initial shot, then that's it, we shouldn't lose because it bounced off of Theo!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 11, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Alzner looked bad at times, but Ovie was the main focus of the D, and we learned that others can step up big time. Green is wicked with that shot and the two F's were superb. That was a win with 1 point.

Posted by: gtydings | February 11, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

It does suck, but remember the goal that won Detroit the Cup last season? Now *that* sucked. Just add them all to the list of "goals the netminder would like to have back" and move on.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | February 11, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Well 3 D mistakes and they score 3, then Poti hollywood move (lol) and Mo double minor... not the best game for our D.

On the other hand, 2 awesome goals by Green + record...

Not our best game... but we knew the Rangers were desperate.

Posted by: mauree | February 11, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Obviously positives come out of this game, but overall, it was pretty disgusting. Tough to lose to a Rangers team that struggles offensively (then notches four against the Caps terrible D tonight). I thought Theo was average and Poti was bad. He was constantly out of position. Alzner looked a little lost, too. This Ovie-Backs-Nyls line needs to be broken up. Neither Backs nor Nyls really want to take any shots or drive the net, so it's easy to double up on Ovie. Takes all the punch out of the primary line. Maybe someone like Laich should move up.

Caps needed those two points, but they lost focus in the second period (and in the third with all those penalties yet again). I can't help but wonder if their lapses in concentration will kill them in the playoffs. They're young, but they need to sharpen themselves mentally a little better.

The only time I disagree with bb is shootout lineups. Laich over green? No. Fehr over nylander, I think. Flash over laich, as well. No diss on laich, but other guys were hot tonight.
