Tonight's lineup

Michal Neuvirth will make his first NHL start tonight at St. Pete Times Forum and will face Tampa Bay's Mike McKenna. Karl Alzner, Milan Jurcina and Jay Beagle will be the healthy scratches while Viktor Kozlov (groin) will be medical scratch.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Laich-Nylander-Bradley
Brashear-Steckel-Gordon

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Kronwall
Erskine-Schultz

Kronwall will be playing in his Caps' debut and first NHL game in almost a year. Green, meantime, can set the all-time record for consecutive games with a goal by a defenseman.

Check back later for some postgame notes and quotes.

Masterlink guy- Any links for the game?

Posted by: redskinsux | February 14, 2009 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Also, I like the "FFF" line and the "SOB" line. yep.

Posted by: redskinsux | February 14, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Come on NEUVY! :)

Posted by: rachel216 | February 14, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

I don't know what to think about Neuvirth. I guess we'll soon see. It seems that he has played very little this year and his stats are inconsistent. He probably hasn't found his pace and comfort zone yet. I am nervous about trying him and Kronwall tonight. We need these two wins. I am pretty sure the Devils pulled ahead of us but I can't bear to look.

Posted by: caraveli | February 14, 2009 7:04 PM | Report abuse

We should win, with or without them.

Posted by: redskinsux | February 14, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I like Mike McKenna. With that said, I hope the Caps are very rude to him.

I also hope Kronwall drills some guy like his brother.

Not only is Morrisonn not scratched, he's on the top pair?

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | February 14, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

And the Freakin Penguins just scored a goal against the Leafs. At least it wasnt Saint Cindy.

GO GREENIE! Make history tonight!

Posted by: DER27 | February 14, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I like watching that SOB line, I know it cant last, but they are fun to watch. It is surely less of a gamble when your playing teams your supposed to beat. Looking forward to seeing that Triple F line too.

I also wonder how long the line juggling will go on with BB. As we get closer to the playoffs, we need to develop some good chemistry dont we?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 14, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

excited to see the kid in net and to see our new defensive acquisition in action.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 14, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Question of the night: Will the Erskine-Schultz pairing be able to get the puck out the defensive zone tonight? I like Erskine's toughness, but he's obviously slow-footed. Schultz is just a disappointment.

Posted by: CDon | February 14, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

I am also surprised Morrison is in while Alzner is out. The Schultz-Erskine line does not fill me with confidence. Well, it's Tampa, so the Caps should get a W if they do not play down to their opponent's level.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 14, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is just a disappointment.

Posted by: CDon | February 14, 2009 7:29 PM

weak slash.

thats it..glove check...hes got somethin in there

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 14, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

First no assist then two assist on the last goal? The way I saw it, it should have been just an assist by Semin.

On the Semin penalty. Marginal call. It was more like a lift check which was a good move on Semin's part. Apparently, Semin touched the other guy's glove?

Posted by: opita1 | February 14, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

@opita

yeah, if anything, it should've been a slash. not really a hook. he was doing his job, stopping roberts. no complaints on that one.

officially ovechkins goal is still unassisted. dont listen to locker's banter, though you know this.

Posted by: geauxcaps | February 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Ive got the Lightning broadcast on center ice, and they just quoted Tocchet as saying
"Mike Green reminds me of Paul Coffey (80s Oilers)".

Not exactly a ringing endorsement in my book, since youre as likely to cost your team a goal as score one.

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | February 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

that looked like brash's goal

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

4th line goals are the best goals.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

3-0. I must warn you Kitty I get insufferable when I'm right this much. Neuvirth isn't the goalie who looks out of his element tonight.

Posted by: benguiin43 | February 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

ugh Ovie, don't give Lightning some life!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 14, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

if you want to talk about a stupid penalty, talk about ovechkin's. not semin's.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 14, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Boy, 3 goals in the 1st period ... if this keeps up and they pull their keeper who goes in - TBL's web producer?!?

@rachel216: Srsly.

Gah, Ovi. Accidental penalty but still.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Good start boys, get this Pen killed then go and ice the game before the end of the second. Then we can spend the third trying to set up Greenie for the record.

I was watching the USA vs. Canada from 1996 today on the Nhl network. There were a ton of hooks by today's standards. There were guys getting spun down and everything. You can't touch a guys glove today without getting a call.

@wtf

Yeah I was watching on the big screen for a bit, I'll make sure to drop a bunch in a row to pump up the comment count.

Semin's penalty was about as marginal as it gets, he ends up with so many steals that lead to goals for US from those lift checks even if you think it was a legit penalty you can't complain about it. Ovie got a little excited, we'll kill it off and should have a PP or two coming our way so Greenie can stand alone in the books...

THAT is how you use your talent Semin, make the smart pass, wrangle the crazy bouncing puck, drop the goalie to the ground, and shoot the no angle empty netter.

I could do that.

Not.

imagine like a 90s expansion situation where teams were scrambling to "save" their goalies from the expansion drafts and found a loophole by playing crappy goalies in one game to only have to expose them to the draft, and not their good goalies.
go web designers.

but then, we'd have to give up our web designer...

You know, they had to start the kid tonight in goal. I know they made the big statement they were confident going with what they had to back up Theo, but you had to get a look at Neuvirth with Varly hurt as much as he has been. You have to know if you need to make a move or not. I wish they hadn't scratched Alzner but I'm glad they're taking a look at Kromwall too.

Update: Just want to thank everyone for their input making this info better each time.

Is everyone prepared for the 21-game salute?

Picture perfect heading into the stretch. Picasso couldn't have painted a more beautiful picture. Is anyone more excited than I about the beginning of the stretch run?

Looking Ahead:

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against Carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabres (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run! All we need is a veteran puck moving defensman.

cool

GREEN!

I can't get NHL on the Fly, sadly. Would love to see it. Congrats to Green and to the Caps - Green's now in the history books and just made his argument for the Norris that much more compelling.

Looking Ahead:

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against Carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)

Windjammer, I know you keep posting this over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, in the name of newbies, or people just getting onto the caps bandwaggon etc... However, it adds nothing, if these people are new to hockey they aren't going to know why the caps playing these teams is any different than them playing the Nordiques or NorthStars. It's the same information they can get by looking at the schedule. Not needeed.

How 'bout that Greener.

After the first period, I knew Green would keep his goal scoring streak alive.

The first period scorers were Semin, Ovechkin and Morrisonn - all names that end in "N."

So I knew Green was up next.

Third period scorers: Fleishmann and Gordon.

Lol Pensblog epic...you scroll through it "GENO!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" and as you get near the end the tone just gets worse and worse. I won't speak too soon the Leafs might put 2 in their own net like Tampa did for them and they'll be the greatest team on the planet again over there.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 14, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

@wtf_e_fehr: Hahaha. 40 minutes in the books, but that goal was a momentum change in Tampa Bay's favor. We need to score on this PP to change the momentum back or we could be fighting.

@Davethecapsfan: Ah. :) Yes, it's quite alarming sometimes.

All right. 40 minutes in the books. 20 more to play. Score on this PP and put the Bolts away. No allowing them to sniff at a comeback. 20 more minutes.

I'll take Ovie/Semin/Green over Crosby/Malkin/Gonchar. That's just my opinion. Anyone else notice Semin has "quietly" had a 3 point night already?

Great announcing...they've blown a 2-0 lead and are losing 5-2 with 5 minutes left but they still have time to drool over a simple cross ice pass from Crosby to Malkin. When Backstrom or Semin saucer on over 2 sticks to land flat right on the tape they act like it was some jobber pass.

The only doubt I have with Fehr is it always has to be some bang bang play for him to get it in. He had semi breakaways in OT against the Rangers and tonight but got stone-walled both times. I think Flash buries at least 1 out of 2 if he's in the same spot. I'm not going to complain too much it's great to see him start finding the net.

@Kitty

try it tomorrow if it works again I'm sold ;)

@rachel

I know my good friend would tell me Flash sucked all last year for basically the exact same thing and I would preach patience that he was showing flashes (ho ho ho terrible pun) of coming into his own. I suppose I shouldn't be so negative with Fehr it just seemed like Flash made a much more natural progression to continuing his goal-scoring ways. In Fehr's defense though he did deal with a lot of injuries that probably slowed him down.

that 5th goal by them was pure wizardry.

I think Varly was pretty calm in his games. I saw him beat St. Louis live and he seemed well in control. Don't forget he was playing with the AHL lineup on D when he was up for his 2 starts.

Kitty,

We don't stand a chance against Fla, right?

Posted by: Steve_R | February 14, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Really wish Malone hadn't scored though, woulda been AWESOME for Neuvy to get the shutout.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 14, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Fehr gets 13 mins only and has the most shots on net. good thing they don't play him more, he may just get too expensive for next year!!

Posted by: Freez | February 14, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

@dave - I did it a lot early on in the year, with pretty good results. I'd stopped doing it for a while more than halfheartedly - time to step it up again, looks like.

We'll see what I can manage tomorrow against a much tougher team. Joe B and Locker seem to think that Alzner and Juice got the scratch tonight so that they'd be fresh for Florida tomorrow. We'll see if that's true.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Have been reading all night and I don't want to be the rain on the parade, but here it goes. While I think Neuvy played extremely well, to compare his play to Varlamov's is a bit premature on both sides. You could say that Varly's competition was much stronger at Montreal and at home against the Blues. Blues are better than the Bolts.

Net/net, I think our future is extremely bright with these goalies, but let's give them time to sort out #1 and #1A.

Great win to watch though. Green is amazing!

Tomorrow's game is going to be a statement game!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 14, 2009 10:22 PM | Report abuse

@kitty

I would assume that is the reason, if you're going to take a look at Neuvy and Kromwall might as well do it on the front end against Tampa. Bring out the horses for tomorrow.

1:39 left still 2-1

@steve_r: Hells no. This team went all out and did an awesome job tonight, but they get less than 24 hours. They've got two D, a forward, and a G who aren't wiped, plus they don't get a morning skate against the best D in the Southeast. They're too likely to get cocky after a win like that.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

I just saw a bad comment. So lets be clear.

This was a LEGIT win against a LEGIT team and.... A LEGIT record BY OUR MIKE GREEN!!!

ANY FAN SPEAKING AGAINST THAT SHOULD CHECK THEMSELVES!

Nash/Bos going to OT. Sigh.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 14, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Got a comment, though - anyone notice Kronwall? Nope. Me neither. That's how I like it. He was where he was supposed to be, doing what he was supposed to be doing, and didn't get beat. Let's see what he does against Florida. Hope he's got something left in the tank.

Heard a quote on NHL network tonight and thought I would get away from my biases and get your alls view (forgive me if this has been discussed before):

"Dan Maourelli (sp) is one of the best refs in the league"

Refs who I believe are the worst (i.e. inconsistent):

1.Bill McCreary
2.Don Koharski
3.Paul Devorski
4.Dan Marouelli

Ok...I confess...these guys were also the guys I grew up not liking while watching the Caps but I also did not include pretty boy Fraser...so maybe not so biased :)

Posted by: ralCapsFan | February 14, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

OT in Nashville. Freakin Sasquatch Chara.

Chicago beating Dallas 4-0. Just something about Dallas and a star on the uniform losing makes me happy.

@Boo: If our boys keep posting games like that I don't jolly well care WHAT JSchon wants to charge me for it, I'll keep doom-and-glooming. Sorry, you're out of luck on that one.

wtf_e_fehr

Not sure if you are talking about my comments, but if you are, you misread them. I was just saying that Varly played tougher competition with excellent results too. Projecting the future after 3 games combined is hard to do, but I like what I see.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 14, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green isn't that good, hes horribly over-rated. Hes a D that doesn't play D, Tom Poti is vastly superior in most if not all categories.

Cant wait for varlamov to get healthy so he will take his rightful place in the nets for the caps. Sure Neuvirth is decent but hes merely a bridge during Varlamov's injury. With that being said, we always need a number one goalie in Hershey though and for that hes tailor made.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

I have to laugh a bit at the Preds fans. They win in a shootout in a game they gave up a tieing goal with 75 seconds remaining. They have 30 points less than the Bruins and are in 12th place, but yet they can yell out "you s.ck" to the Bruins.

I really don't like the Bruins, but let's put things in perspective people.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 14, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Good lineup in there now all we need is to get Schultz out, Juice in, Alzner down to the farm (where he BELONGS) and Nyles traded and Beagle back in the lineup. And good to see the young kid play well between the pipes. Don't kid yourself, the Bolts are a much better team now than they were earlier in the season. Good win for the cappies!

"At least theyre not flatlining" - Jack Edwards at end of Boston game. Leaving the Bruins for dead Jack ?

Not only is Morrisonn not scratched, he's on the top pair?

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | February 14, 2009 7:18 PM

Brent Seabrooke takes a lot of penalties for the Hawks and he's on their top pair too. Mo's got a good defensive game especially for this team. No way he gets scratched because he took two doubleminors in 2 games. Thats never been his style, its called an exception. Bruce would be dumb to listen to some of the fans on this board and scratch him based on such a minor blip in his young career. Now if he was taking dumb penalties every other game like Semin then yes, he should be scratched once just to send him a message and see if he learns

Yeah, still can't stand the negative doom and gloom postings. And no, the Caps didn't win because you were playing Debbie Downer tonight and every night the Caps play. Don't even kid yourself. I can't stand how you could be a fan but talk crap about their chances of winning and how they need to fix this and that. Honestly, I highly doubt any of the Caps much less Broudreau would take kindly to your "suggestions". Keep that in mind when you're talking doom and gloom. You'd be an idiot to think it'll make you look like more of a fan. Again, you're just as bad as windjammersouth.
