Tonight's Lineup

Jose Theodore will start in net for the Caps tonight and will face Antero Niittymaki.

Flyers' defenseman Kimmo Timonen will miss the game with the flu. Timonen is the their designated Alex Ovechkin shutdown 'D', and although Ovechkin has had his share of scoring chances against Philly this season, the reigning MVP is pointless in two games against the Flyers. Out for the Capitals are Viktor Kozlov (groin) and Staffan Kronwall (healthy).

The rest of the Caps' lineup:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Nylander
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Poti
Schultz-Green
Erskine-Jurcina

Katie will update the blog later with some post game notes and quotes while I crank out a game story for the paper.

Why does it say Tarik posted at 6:20 but I can't see it untill 6:43??!!!

But anyway, GO CAPS!! Beat those stupid Flyers!!

Antero Niittymaki, crap that guy stopped like 40 shots against us.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Here's hoping Nylander can find his game.

GO CAPSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nittymaki can't do it twice, and not in our barn.

I see Circles is on the top line again. I hope he plays. We really need Kozlov to heal up.

Posted by: EricCarr | February 24, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

yeah I believe it was 25 in the 1st period alone, CRASH THE NET!!!, you know Hartnell is going to be doing it, our guys need to also!!

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and lets start a NEW streak for Mr. E. Fehr!!!!!!!!!!

Heck, Flash could use one too!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 24, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Read on another blog that Timonen is going to be out, that's a HUGE plus for Ov

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Earlier about the Timonen thing, not just now, haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Hey all
Anyone know a website where I can get a cap like the one Greener wears for those 'between periods interviews'? Red ballcap w/ weagle logo. I think it's made by Reebok. NHL and Caps official sites are no go. Ditto lids.com.

Posted by: kevbnyc | February 24, 2009 6:57 PM | Report abuse

I would like to see Kronwall in there for Schulz. I liked how Kronwall played in his first game. I'd like to see him in there every so often in Schultz's spot!!!

Posted by: Thomas32 | February 24, 2009 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Guess the Flyers expect Niittymaki to have the same luck he did a few weeks back. Time for payback. Vengeance NOW!

Posted by: ejohnsto | February 24, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Well due to a stomach ailment, I'll be enjoying this one from home with the rest of you Caps fans.

It sucks, but I suppose the odds of having a beer spilled on me is a lot lower at my house... ;)

The puck is about to drop; it's time!!!

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

too much passing there but Nylander

Wow...

Posted by: greener1 | February 24, 2009 7:19 PM | Report abuse

This is why Nyls can't be on the wing. He seemingly refuses to shoot. Why would he pass it back there? That was his opportunity to put one on net. So frustrating.

Fill in the blank:

"Nylander skates with the puck into the zone and _________ ..."

Hint: answer is circles.

Posted by: EricCarr | February 24, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I wish Semin would've faked the pass on that early 2 on 1 and just rifled his sick wrister top shelf.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Oh, I know it, Eric. But he should have a different mentality if he's going to play on the wing. But whatever, it won't change with him.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Penalty in the offensive zone...ease up Stecks.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Great hit by Richards there.

Answer: pirouettes

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

"the tattoo parlor is open" - Bill Clement on Mike Richards hitting Poti on the Flyers broadcast

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | February 24, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

CDon, you're 100% right, and I have no idea why he does it. He didn't do it in the past, but now all he does is skate in a, well, pirouette.

Maybe it's age. I dunno. But it does not help.

Oh, and Davorski can stop doing Caps games any time now.

It's strange that we're not good at 5 on 3s.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

What did Erskine do to that Flyer? He went down fast...

Posted by: isaacc7 | February 24, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

The hit on Poti was great. But Clement is an idiot, in general.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Woow Erskine showing his cheap stuff.

Posted by: powerplay | February 24, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

It looked like Erskine gave him a jab to the groinal region. Not sure if refs caught that, though. But Caps could be on PK when we're back from commercial.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

wacked in him the stomach, kinda divish

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Oh... Ouch. Yeah, he deserves a penalty for that I suppose...

Posted by: isaacc7 | February 24, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, cheap one from Erskine. It's Crosby-esque.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Two minutes for smashing grapes. Yikes.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 24, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure if Erskine was just trying to use his stick in his normal way to hold someone back from Theo when he covers it...but man either that was a lucky shot or he definitely planned that. It had to be a penalty.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

ooooooohh, def not the stomach!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

oooooohhhhh backs!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Didn't know Nylander could swing his stick that hard to break a stick.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Caps will bury a shortie on this PK.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Damn composite sticks

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

What is Nylander doing taking penalties?

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 24, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Please oh please get better Kozlov. Watching Nylander is like watching the Wizards .... NOT GOOD!!!!

Posted by: vegascapsfan1 | February 24, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Nylander couldve been called for wrapping up his guy before that slash. Both infractions directly in front of the ref.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

OMG how did that not go in?!

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Nice boot skate save from Theo there. But Caps have had four great scoring opportunities on the PK. Hate to these chances wasted.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Wow, getting a little lucky there.

Posted by: isaacc7 | February 24, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

If Philly keeps allowing all these short-handed chances, we're going to eventually sink one of 'em....

What a crazy chance Philly had there at the end of the period. Wow.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 24, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Many missed opportunities in the 1st, we should have like 4 goals already!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Theo actually stopped Hartnell on that, he didn't fan on it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Just when you thought that the period was over the Flyers try to goon it up a bit...

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 24, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

I def see a shortie from the Caps tonight.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

In all our games we spend half the time killing penalties, it's so frustrating!! Lately I've been seeing to many penalty killing, I want to have chances in our offensive zone to score, I don't wanna be killing penalties all day!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

If you look at Erskine's reaction after his, um, foul, I don't think he realized he did that. Now, that doesn't matter - control of your stick is a requirement, but I don't think it's a cheap shot.

Jurcina -- could he miss the net more? I can miss the net from the point too, and my salary demands are more modest.

Posted by: EricCarr | February 24, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

CDon,

Clement may be an idiot, but compared to the other two clowns on the Flyers broadcast, he's brilliant

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | February 24, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, as hard as Jurcina shoots, if he could just hit the net, he'd probably be a bigger goal scorer, and he could be an asset on a PP second team.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

oooh Steckels got a shiner

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

If ever the Caps are good enough to get the "crosby" calls...Watch out! Until then we must suffer.

For every Shortie chance we get, we will give a great pp chance.

Posted by: ewwsombra | February 24, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

As well as we played in the 1st, it's the kind of period you have to give the nod to the visitors.

I say this in hopes we come out and see similar or better results in the 2nd and not laggy play.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Let's worry about us winning first and then Boston.

What's the script for the refs tonight -- the Flyers must get a PP at the end of every period? Great chant again

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 24, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

New rule: Goalies no longer can protect themselves when players are sliding into them.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

3rd period should be a good one. Too much PP time chopping this game up. Stay 5 on 5 and roll the lines.

That period was SOOOOOOO much longer than the first!

Isn't Paul Devorski one of the refs that hosed the Caps in Game 7 last year?

Posted by: TheSkyIsntFalling | February 24, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully they break him and this game open in the 3rd. Don't want the Flyers hanging around only down one late.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

What made that penalty on JT look worse than it the Flyers player was in the Crosby (fetal) position with his hands over his. If there was a penalty, it probably should have been a trip.

There's that great Caps defense. This is absolutely ridiculous. I think the Caps play scared against this team, and it's awful.

The third goal was on Schultz for wussing out and not being willing to take a hit. The fourth was more of that lackadaisical defensive zone play from Washington. It happens far too often. But I'm more concerned with how the Caps can't seem to compete against the Flyers.

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | February 24, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm confused, did Theo think rotating backwards out of the goal he was going to block a pass with his ass or was he just being friendly exposing more of the net for the shot?

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

The Caps had the oppurtunties to put this away, but Laich, Fehr, and Semin all missed wide open shots. The Caps just play nervous against the Flyers.

Posted by: kevbnyc | February 24, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

So many misses tonight. Only 1-for-7 on the power play (and there goes Fehr again missing opportunities to score), four great shorthanded chances, Theo giving up a couple of bad ones (beaten high again, no shock there), Schultz wussing out and the forwards coasting back into the defensive zone rather than blasting back to stop the offensive push.

Posted by: Satts | February 24, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

I didn't see either of our goals live so I decided to do other things for a while and I come back to see the replay. I guess people are blaming the D for the score, I just saw Theo spinning out of the goal facing towards it on that last one.

But maybe I'm wrong.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Don't blame Jose, maybe on a good night he stops that 4th one, but how Asram walks through our entire team is the real question.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Caps get intimidated by this team for some unknown reason. It's ridiculous. This is a shameful performance. Caps better hope they don't draw this team in the first round because it would be another early effort. Look at the games this season. There was the 7-1 disaster and the AWFUL 2-1 shootout win against a depleted Flyers team. Now there's this debacle.

Posted by: mauree | February 24, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Schultz has to go. Feds on D is fine, but he should've unleashed a wrister on his last chance. Now BB needs to pull Nyls off the top line for the rest of this one.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

@CDon

Pretty much all the highlight goals you see are beating the goalie high for a reason. Hartnell's shot was just a rip, not going to stop it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Even a goalie like Nittymaki can outplay Theo, Nittymaki's defense didn't help him out either on Ovie's goal. Please play Neuvirth on Thursday, Caps like playing defense when it's for a young goalie. Also, that's why we can't always pay attention to Boston, cause we can't even take care of our own business.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Agreed that the D is sucking in the 3rd, but Jose is down at the first wiff of the puck and can't react side to side. The last 2 goals were exactly the same and he is throwing his stick in hopes to stop the puck because he is down and out in the middle to the other side of the goal.

well that penalty doesn't help

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Schultz needs to be scratched to send a message. I'm not sure why he's so well-liked by BB. He's proven time and again that's a softie. Put him on the bench.

And this PK officially ends the game. Chalk it up to poor defense (again), 1-for-7 on the PP and careless play overall (not surprising).

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Fehr turnover and penalty. That's pretty much game now. A 3rd period to forget for Fehr. He's not the scapegoat here but after his little 4 game run we can't miss the obvious that he's had a horde of chances and hasn't buried them.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

D quit, but Theo definitely needs to stop the third goal and probably shouldn't have overcommitted on the fourth, but he always overcommits, so nothing new there. He's made some great saves, but he does that every game. He makes tough stops, but he also gives up bad goals.

Wow, another penalty. Talk about a collapse. This is one of the biggest I've seen from a team.

The flyers were able to do what the caps have not been able to do consistently. They went all out for the whole game. The caps' defense went into a lull. Why is it so difficult to play the entire game?

OK, you just pulled out a great win on the road against a great HOME team. Your fans are in the arena lookin for the hand tap/high five. WTF? Philly bein Philly...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 24, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

It must be stated there is no way Theo stops the 3rd goal (Carter's) unless he gets lucky. No D coverage and Carter is all alone with Theo already almost down and out. At that point he's just flailing hoping to knock down the puck. Need to do a better job getting pucks out of our zone without coughing it up and looking like fools when our coverage is nowhere to be found.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Play in front of the nets was a big difference in this game. They cleared their crease better and finished in front of ours better. Obviously we had tons of chances to put this game away but we couldn't finish.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 24, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

It's not good to lose games like this to teams like Philly. There's a big-time mental edge in this series, and Washington needs to hand the Flyers a big loss to change that. This certainly is a major step back.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

For once I don't blame the effort - we were playing well on the third period. I'd like them to play more intense when they have a lead... but they did have a few chances to go 3-1.

Flyers never quits... Schultz was too slow on both last two goals. Theo could have done better - he did make some monster saves before.

Posted by: mauree | February 24, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

I saw only the third, but no goalie can help you if your defense decides to take off early X(

PLEEEEEEEEASE TRADE SCHULZ!

I am sick of seeing him misplay the puck along the boards. He looks like a damned miniature golf windmill out there.

Posted by: ThomasJefferson | February 24, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Dave, I don't agree about that third goal. Theo can be beaten high. If he's not so far out of his crease, as he always is, he stops that. But regardless, if he comes out that high, he's gotta play bigger to cut down the top of the net. Theo goes low fine, but he has trouble stopping the high heat, and that's a shot he should be able to knock down.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Somebody said Pronger is for sale? How does he not help us against this team, or in teaching our guys how to play menacing D?

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Of course Pronger would help, but how much would the Caps have to give up to get him? Not practical, most likely.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Caps have had trouble with the Flyers since the 80s. Always a good game.

Posted by: ejohnsto | February 24, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

@austinsteve
He'd be the best choice for this team, but the only way he'd leave the Ducks is that they don't make the playoffs. And they will.

I might as well say it: Semin's penalty in the end should have been avoided. Yes it was a small cross check, but the ref was right there and he can't not call that. Bad move by Semin.

Posted by: mauree | February 24, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Alright, so Thursday! Woo, Caps Hockey! Not that I blame the game on the refs, but for some reason, Devorski's an ill omen. They can't give him to us three games in a row, right?

Oh well, back to "Trailer Park Boys" and "Miracle".

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | February 24, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

This team needs 2 pieces to get where they want to be.

1. A banger that can finish in front of the net.

2. A good, gritty defenseman to protect our own crease.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 24, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

If we think we're in position to contend for the Cup this year then we need to address our D problems and that means give up some of the future.

Just one opinion though.

Oh well, in my opinion there isn't that much need to be first in the Conference, all that matters is being in the playoffs and playing your best right before the playoffs start. Anyway in all sports the #1 seed usually goes out quickly. We don't need the expectations cause our defense just isn't good enough.

What about SlapShot Jmu? Thats a good one.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

I think that last call against Semin was terrible. It looked like the Flyer fell down and Semin was lightly regaining his balance by barely touching the guy that had already fallen down.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 24, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

BTW aside the score, this was a good game, against a team that is really strong. And they have power in both creases.

And the game was close up to the end... so let's not hit panic button, it wasn't like the Caps were lazy this time. They played good hockey (except fatal laps of D)

Posted by: mauree | February 24, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Simply put, it's all about heart. It's all about guts. It's all about THE WILL TO WIN. And, THAT'S where the Caps don't measure up. Too many wimps. Nobody ( Except the usual two, or three ) willing to step up and say, "Not here! Not in MY HOUSE!
All of the puck handling skill in the world, CAN NOT make up for that one glaring deficiency. And, for god's sake don't tell me about their taking too many penalties. That excuse is getting to be real tired. They had at least 3 stone - cold breakaway chances. So,...
No trade deadline deal can solve Washington's problem. There're simply too many wimps for that. Sorry, but that's Puckguru perspective. Has been for the last 1 1/2 seasons.

Posted by: Puckguru | February 24, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Just send Nylander somewhere, he is not even trying. Minors, home, straight to hell boy, I don't care. And for all you Fehr lovers out there, he is pretty bad when it counts, ie PP wide open net. And Flash maybe having an okay year but he is actually afraid of the flyers. He is an embarrassment when we play a tough team like philly. The D was awful. not really Theo's fault. And one more thing, at the end when it was a loss, why not send Brash out there to send a message, take out Hartnell, asham (who he still owes) or Richards. We will see these guys again in the playoffs and BB has to use his tough guys at some point.

Posted by: bestpilotonearth | February 24, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Last half of the third there was a definite let down in energy from the Caps, and it showed. So I can't agree with you totally mauree. Flyers have major goaltending issues, until they play the Caps, of course. I think it's impossible to play good hockey if you have fatal lapses on the defensive end for almost half of a period.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

@mauree

I didn't see Semin's cross-check, I'm sure it happened though.

But in real-time when a guy skates in low at his feet while he's trying to get to the puck my first thought was #1 interference on the Philly guy and #2, where is Semin supposed to go? So I thought the raised hand was going against the Flyers

I hadn't looked at the Ducks standing but you're right, they won't trade him if they're going to get in.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

I disagree DC, almost all goalies get beat high because it's the toughest part of the net to cover...when you're scrambling after an initial tip in/deflection play it's even more difficult.

Also Semin's last penalty was legit if just accidental. Watch the replay of it whichever Flyer it was leaned down coming in and the initial contact was a cross check motion (although a pretty light one since it was more just him putting his stick out to guard from a hit) to the Flyer's face.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr, not really, cause Boston won. If we won we would be in the same place as before. Also, lately Semin has been pulling off a lot of Nylander moves, skating in cirles, ugh. Please, please, please don't let us have to play the Flyers in the playoffs, ... WHY do we have so much problems against this team?

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

austinsteve

Either that or a time machine to bring Langway, K Hatcher and Scott Stevens to play D. There's gotta be a government lab somewhere in the area with a time machine

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

The Caps can't beat the Flyers the way they think about the Flyers. They played nervous. Lousy shots, cutesy passes, overskating, absolutely horrible in their own end in a tight 3rd period. The Flyers know they have the Caps beat before the game begins. This is the only team that has the Caps beat in their heads. Time for group therapy, and a pair of pink slips: Nylander and Schultz! Don't let the door hit on the way out

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Grrr!! What the f___ happened to our team in third period? Time for someone to get out their Philadelphia Flyers voodoo doll and stick in a few pins. Or something. All I can say is I'll be rooting VERY hard for anyone else but the Caps to play the Flyers in the first round of the playoffs. And will be rooting VERY hard for that team to dump the Flyers.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Puckguru,

I agree that we need to add toughness but I don't think we're as far away from achieving that as you think. We need one grittier offensive player and one on defense and we'll be right there.

There is no doubt that Philly, overall, is a tougher, phyically stronger team but the Caps can get there with a couple of moves, even if it's not this season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 24, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

ludeman95, Might if I have time, but I watched it a few weeks ago. I've still got half a season of TPB to get through.

@Puckguru

So we lost because we missed breakaway chances but it's cause we're wimps?

We played sloppy but before it ever gets to that point most nights Backie's shortie is in and Fehr doesn't whiff after Ovie sets him up for a tap in. Game.

I know that puckguru rankles most people in here, but he slightly hit on something that's fairly accurate. I won't say that the Caps don't have heart because I don't think that's true. But the Caps do lack a certain mental edge, and they did dating back to last season. Maybe it's because they're a younger team, but they have these lapses because mentally they don't always stay sharp for 60 minutes. I've seen this movie with another professional sports franchise in the area that has attempt to rely on talent to carry them through the postseason. And guess what? It never worked. At some point, the Caps will need to gain that mental edge. (They'll also need to learn how to play gritty hockey, too, at some point.) But they're not quite there yet. It's something that can still be fixed down the stretch here or going into next year, but it needs to happen to help this team take the next step.

We had 9 penalties tonight, WOW. When was the last time we had under 6? It's 9-10 every game.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 24, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Theo is certainly not to blame for this loss. The score probably should have been worse. Philadelphia took it to the Caps from the 2nd period on. They were quick and had plenty of open looks on the goal. The Caps blew too many early opportunities and paid for it. This defense is slow and frustrating to watch. Schultz should have planted Ashem? Instead he goes around him and scores. The defense needs to be tweaked. GM, please bring in a physical d-man.

Posted by: jnjensor | February 24, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Is it a broken record? Bad penalties, worse penalty kill...Nyls and Schultz, garbage..."too cute" cost us...

Tough loss but the ship ain't sinking...and credit to Philly, they seem to have an endless supply of capable forwards. They literally pounce on mistakes and make you pay. Lopul is definitely becoming a nemesis.

Posted by: wendel2 | February 24, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

It seemed like the Caps were sluggish as hell in the third and the Flyers still had plenty of energy

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

disagree about the Caps toughness tonight. They played tuff, but nervous. The hits were even, the Caps played hard, but they played too cutesy. The PP looked intimated of the Flyers PK fairly often. The shots were pretty much even. But the shots! The Caps took terrible shots, and the Flyers finished their plays. The Flyers looked to shoot; the Caps looked to pass. The Flyers defense swarmed to their goalie and cleared out the crease. Schultz let two different Flyers skate around him as he tried to play the puck, not the body. He is a big wuss

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 24, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Yeah your buddy puckguru beat you to it

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 24, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

The Flyers always clear their crease. The Caps didn't last year in the playoffs and haven't this year, either. If you think about it, only Erskine really clears the crease. Occasionally Mo or Jurcina will. But Green, Schultz and Poti usually don't. So it's easy to create and sustain traffic in front of the net. That's part of the edge some of these guys still need.

Posted by: CDon | February 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Just reading the posts and uhm, yeah, I'm glad I wasn't at Verizon. My only suggestion is the whole "optional skate". I'm curious to see if a practice yesterday would have helped. I agree there seems to be some type of mental block that makes the Caps freeze up. I'm shocked that they scored 3 in that last period! How'd that happen? =/

Okay, like adults, let's suck it up. They got a game on Thursday and rather than nag them to death on the blogs, let's hope that they practice...hard the next two days! Wouldn't want to be them tomorrow morning.

Let's go CAPS!!!

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | February 24, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully this will open their eyes up. This game and the Colorado game. I feel like a lot of times they feel like they are just too good to be beaten. They need games like this to remind them that they can't relax after getting a lead, they do that so much. And what is up with Nittymaki, is he that good or is he just that good against us? Let this stuff happen now, not in the playoffs.

Posted by: gtydings | February 24, 2009 9:59 PM

Everyone knows. Shultz can't be a defenseman, he plays zero defense. And he's super slow, trade him, and Nylander along with him. Nylander doesn't want to be here, it's clear by the way he is playing. When was the last time Nylander registered a point? I think it was the NJ game, such a long time ago.

schultz should probably play some baseball this summer in the dominican - maybe lookup A-Rods cousin. then he could beef up a little and come back in oct. with a hint of rage.

This team has got to get it through their heads that they can beat Philly. They own us and get under our skin.

It just seems we have absolutely nobody who puts some fear into them. Where's Brashear getting in people's heads?? I see effort from him, but no goading people into stuff - nothing. Bradley - did he play tonight?
Steckel? Gordon - no toughness at all.

All I can say is I pray the Caps don't draw Philly - they cannot match up with them - and just wait until Timonen & Briere are back in the line-up.

SHULTZ IS TERRIBLE.... I say it all the time and for some reason GMGM loves this guy. WHEN will he wake up and realize that yeah not all draft picks pan out and that Shultz didnt work and he is a true baby who doesnt use his size. He did well in the draft to pick up ovie and greenie but shultz sucks so bad and is kill me watching him every night. Play Kronwall till the deadline trade for ANYONE....bring back emmie from tampa

As soon as the guy from WJFK (or whatever the radio station was) predicted a 4-2 Flyers win during the second intermission, I kind of had a bad feeling about it. I know he was joking around, but it didn't really surprise me when it actually happened. I'm not particularly superstitious or anything like that, but I really hate when people do that.

Posted by: FedorovCrunch | February 24, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

back from the game. that hurt. thoughts...

Disagree with some comments. We had a great penalty kill early in the game. The stupid penalties (thanks Semin, and bad calls) cost us the game.

Shultz isn't that bad. He was all over the puck most of the game.

The refs need to let Brash go. And agree with most of you- a tough Dman would be nice.

FUNNY-

Wasn't Schultz earning high praise after the Pittsburgh game? Not fair to pin this on him, the defense as a unit needs a gut check...team defense too. Anyway, better to identify the weak points now while they can still be addressed, right?

To come off like a wannabe voice of reason, let's remind ourselves that we don't want get our panties in a bunch over one game. We've all admitted that the Flyers are pretty tough team. Yeah, sh*t happens and we know that Bruce is going to address the problems that we're all aware of. Let's have him do what he does best and that's get the Caps in shape. As far as our job, as fans, is come out and support at every game. Thursday is up. Rather than be bitter about their performance tonight, let's shake it off and look towards trouncing whichever poor team has the unfortunate luck to face our boys. Go get 'em, Caps!
