Tonight's Lineup: Caps at Hurricanes

Jose Theodore will start in goal tonight against the 'Canes and will oppose Cam Ward, who will be making his 21st straight appearance. Milan Jurcina (healthy) and Donald Brashear (knee) are out and Chris Bourque will suit up for the Caps as they go for their third straight win in what could be a third seed vs. sixth seed playoff preview.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
(Boudreau splits up Ovechkin, Backstrom and Semin when they get "too cute" as they did against the Lightning.)
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr
(Fleischmann has one point, a goal, in 14 games.)
Bourque-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Schultz-Poti
Erskine-Pothier

'Juice' Squeezed Out
Coach Bruce Boudreau said Green is "fine" and that he's going to start rotating the defenseman at the bottom of the depth chart to get Brian Pothier some playing time leading up to the playoffs.

Jurcina "played really good and so did [John] Erskine the game before," Boudreau said. "If we want to give Brian a chance to see if he can be in the top six, we have to play him. He's still ...in training camp. We have to see what he can do."

Check back later for some postgame notes and quotes.

Let's go Jose let's go!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Never mind, I guess Boyd isn't exactly day-to-day like Brash.

Posted by: Caps1Fan | March 21, 2009 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Boyd is on IR, I'm told. So he's not a scratch.

Posted by: el_bashir | March 21, 2009 5:49 PM | Report abuse

BB is telling the D that if they get scratched it's not because they're playing bad so they aren't playing tight. It's because they played well?

Posted by: austinsteve | March 21, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

Rotating defensemen at the bottom of the depth chart? Then why the hell has Schultz not been 'rotated' yet? Hell, hes rock bottom of the depth chart.

Posted by: OviToSemin | March 21, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is rock-bottom. Hmmm. He's third on the team in plus-minus and second in fewest penalty minutes. That bum! If only we had fewer players like that! Then we'd be really great!

Posted by: Kirg | March 21, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Please win tonight Caps!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Schultz is #3 on the team's depth chart, and has been all season.

Posted by: capsbluelinedotcom | March 21, 2009 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Schultz takes the most bashing on this post. He is a very solid, but not flashy, defenseman. He is always, always, always a top 4 guy on this team.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 21, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

LATELY Schultz has been better.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

21 straight starts... doesn't Ward need a break? I would like to see Michael Leighton.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 6:50 PM | Report abuse

We will be 2 points within Boston if we win tonight! Would be nice even though it might only last a night because Boston and NJ play tomorrow.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 6:57 PM | Report abuse

@kirg

Plus/minus is the most meaningless stat in professional sports. I know there aren't any better stats to value defenseman, but it really doesn't mean anything.

Also, it's pretty hard to get penalties when you refuse to hit ANYONE.

The sad thing is, yeah, he's probably our 4th or 5th best D-Man, but that doesn't make him any good. Congratulations, Schultz, you're (slightly) better than Jon Erskine.

Jeff Schultz stinks and I don't like him.

Let's GOO Caps!

I'll take a win anyway they get it. I've gotten used to Semin on the 2nd line for a while now. He's pretty productive there with Federov anyways and spaces out the threat to the other team. C'mon, Caps!

You guys kill me with the Shultz stuff. Try counting Mike Green's bad plays. You'll be amazed.

Posted by: WVPhil | March 21, 2009 7:30 PM

though i will agree with you that green makes quite a number of defensive mistakes, he doesnt get caught straight flat footed like that. ever.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Juts because he scores goals, he gets a pass on all his bad defensive plays (and rightfully so sometimes). Just keep an eye out for them is all I ask.

Posted by: WVPhil | March 21, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Comparing Schultz to green is like comparing Bradley with Ovechkin. Mike Green scores more than enough points to make up for his defensive lapses. Green makes a lot of GOOD defensive plays too, and even delivers some big open ice hits, unlike Schultz.

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 21, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

it's fake horn guy...LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

I do like the Canes uniforms tonight.

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 21, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

We need to score in this period. We're getting too many quality shots, that can't last forever.

Posted by: austinsteve | March 21, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Players like Morrisonn and Schultz (who has been paired with Green a lot this year)play solid defense, which allows Green to pinch and score. That is why Schultz is a plus player. If was not solid back there, Green would not score so much.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 21, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

I'm not comparing the too. I'm just saying that Green makes plenty of bad defensive plays too. they just don't get pointed out because he scores goals.

Posted by: fnralch | March 21, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Richmond Phil,
I think Mo was our best d-man last year. I have no idea what happened to him this year. I would say they play "solid" D, but nothing spectacular. We don't have an "above solid" defensive D man on the roster.

Caps give up way, way too many shorthanded chances

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 21, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Our team has an extremely offensive-minded system. No left wing lock or center asked to hang back. Mo and Schultz are the only guys asked to play traditional defense.

They may look like they get turned around a lot, but that is because they are left alone. That is the system. Don't hate the playa....

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 21, 2009 7:41 PM | Report abuse

We've got to score on this power play continuing in the second period. keep the good defense up, only 3 shots for carolina. Semin is being a little too fancy.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

hahaha...we actually have Slapshot at the game..that is great. Does Carolina even have a mascot?

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 21, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

They play mediocre defense. Schultz gets the exception i guess for being younger, but Mo is mediocre at best across the league.

Like i said, Poti and Mo might be the best defensively on our team, but they are average and mediocre when placed across the league.

Remember, Poti used to be considered a puck mover type.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Well if Schultz could score like Greenie than we'd forgive him for his defense, but he doesn't score like Greenie.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

CapsSkins: That is pretty funny that they got Slapshot to make the trip... as for Carolina having a mascot, I just saw something purple down on the ice as they were cutting to a commercial break, but I have no idea what the hell it was. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 21, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

hahahaha...slapshot throwing hits like OV!!!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 21, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

The system has nothing to do with watching a player make an isolated defensive mistake. You can also very clearly see the difference between a defensive lapse because of our offensively-charged system and a defensive mistake made by a person.

Backstrom a 2nd rounder

I swear they had people txting in with the "correct" answer being Backstrom. If anybody else sees the Carolina feed?

Oh well, on to 3rd. Go Caps!

Posted by: austinsteve | March 21, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Definitely a screw-up. They were all first-rounders.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 21, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

That cannot be right at all.

I am 100% positive backstrom was 1st round. He was the highest rated European prospect for that whole draft.

and it can't be the other, since he was never drafted.

ah well.

wtf theo?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

terrible rebound given up by theo. slow poke.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 21, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

he didnt even do that.

brian pothier was standing around looking retarded as well.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Well if we're going to allow a second goal, I'm glad it happened early rather than late in the 3rd... leaves plenty of time for the comeback effort.

That said, I wish we hadn't have allowed that. :\ Big PK here...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 21, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Why is Pothier watching that goal happen? That was some of the worst defense I've seen in a while. That guy needs to get his head in the game.

Posted by: abtassler | March 21, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

at least pothier has an excuse, but come on man. at least engage the guy.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Feds shouldn't be on the PK for the rest of the game. I think he's mentally tired.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

We will deal with Grapes and his hilarity later. we are losing to carolina right now.

the hilarity of the NHL.

call the trip and the dive.

....

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

wow that should've been 3-1, what's theo doing?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

So there's a penalty for tripping and then the guys who falls (FROM THE TRIP) is whistled for diving?

Where the hell are these refs from?

That was Mo by the way guys.

Pothier tried to compensate for Mo's boneheaded play, but he isnt god.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

If anyone thinks that the Caps can just turn it on during the playoffs, they are crazy. This team is playing 500 hockey over the last 30 days and it really shows.

Posted by: tferragut | March 21, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

And just as I typed that the Bears scored and won 5-4!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: tess2201 | March 21, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Now this goal really pisses me off.
Mo had all the friggin time to tie him up and instead Babchuk was all alone in front of Theo. If it was me, Mo would sit next game.

i can't stand our D anymore, it's so BAD. all they do is stand there.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

So should we have Alzner and Sloan up here for playoff time?

Posted by: WVPhil | March 21, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

I'm afraid we are destined for 3rd place. Let's hope Philthy doesn't tank it to get into the 6 hole.

alzner, probably.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Green for roughing???? What a BS call.

Posted by: mauree | March 21, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

That was a major league punk move that deserves at least a 1 game suspension. Cross check to the head?

Posted by: austinsteve | March 21, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

I guess we can't talk about 1st or 2nd in the conference anymore, we just aren't consistent enough, so we will have the third seed, if we play Carolina, I don't have a good feeling about it. Terrible played 3rd period. Defense just stands there and let Carolina players do whatever they want. Theo not helping himself either by flopping around and giving up juicy rebounds.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

What a BS refereeing. Just a shame.

No Brashear in line-up = no fear of crosschecking Green in the head. And, the Caps get tagged with the "retaliation"? Nice job refs! And, now Ovie gets boarded? Pffft to all of the people who want fighting out of the game...

Posted by: MetalCapsFan | March 21, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Brind A'mour's arm in the back of Ovi's head? The Carolina announcers say ovi launched Himself.

If we don't fight here, we will see more of this. These are our blue chippers

i got really scared for a second there.

brind-amour knew he messed up right when he did it, so i have no clue what the carolina announcers are talking about.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I think the Caps had shown up to play the first and second. But ran out of gas in the third.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 21, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

i think they are just complacent and want the playoffs to start now, and quite frankly, I want the playoffs to start as well but after seeing the first two goals we gave up in the third I don't know if we are ready. It's funny, in the pregame video that washingtoncaps.com had Green said this was one of the biggest game for them this year cause this might be the team they're going to play, well they didn't play it like it was a big game. They were sleepy, especially in front of Theo.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Eh, once again, our team failed to find the motivation to play, it would appear. On to the next game, Caps fans. Get it together, Capitals! Still love you guys but man, get ready for the troll infestation, folks, and the sad, sad man that is Don Cherry. *braces for verbal fight with trolls tonight*

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | March 21, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Columbus is going to make some noise in the playoffs. That's a team I wouldn't want the Caps to have to face-at least not until June anyway.

Posted by: Terptwin | March 21, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Theo was good, minus the second goal.

I wish our defense would help him out more.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Crappy end to a crappy game, unfortunately. Time for the Caps to come home and get a good meal, then head to the great white north.

Columbus seems to have scored three goals in the last three minutes of the game to grab a victory against Florida.

So despite the loss, we still only need 6 points in our last to mathematically clinch the division. Carolina's maximum point total is 101, and Florida's is 100. Here's to Monday's CAR-FLA game ending in regulation!

Posted by: tferragut | March 21, 2009 9:15 PM

I am affraid I have to agree. If they don't have more control over "turning it on," and they keep blowing hot and cold randomly, they are just not Stanley Cup material yet.

The defense was bad, but so was the offense. We just couldn't score. When we have difficulty scoring and make the other goalie appear like a super hero, we usually lose.

And, though Theo is pretty good, he is not giving us the edge we need to win. Theo lets in three goals in 29 shots; Ward lets in one goal in 32 shots. Not a huge difference, but enough to get them a win. Now how many times have we been beaten by better goal-tending?

Very disappointing!

Posted by: caraveli | March 21, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil, yes these announcers bothered me more than the usual away team announcers.

@rachel216
Carolina was the back-to-back game team. No excuse for us. We brought it in the 1st, just no goals

@caps org, do I call the league on that Green hit or you?!!!

Feds frustrates me, his pride should make him keep his game up down the stretch here.

Okay I'm done :)

Great question BB.

why the hell is there a guy left alone in front of our net?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Game thoughts

THE OFFICIATING: Not blaming it for the loss but I'm finished with two veteran referees making some dumbass calls. The dive on Fleischman no way. Then the retaliation on Green - NEVER - after the guy cross checked him HE CAME AFTER Green again and you're saying Green retaliated.
The no-call on Ovechkin being tripped early in the game - it was horrible. McCreary and Marouelli are a joke and to only give Brind'A'Mour only two minutes after that hit on Ovie - that was AT THE LEAST - a five minute major. Ok I'm done there. :)

DEFENSIVE LAPSES: It's bad enough to leave a guy alone in front of your net but a defensemen?????? It's inexcusable.

TOO MUCH PASSING: This team got out of it's KISS shell and started passing way too much AGAIN. Although props to Ward - he made some big saves when he had to.

INTANGIBLES: They didn't beat a team having played the night before. You gotta jump on them early. It didn't happen enough. Oh well - what are you going to do.

It's in the rearview mirror and on to Toronto.
