Gotta think Erskine gets Nyls spot. Can't think of one think Nyls can offer over SL.

Anyone know about Cox Fairfax? It used to be 74, but a NBA game is shown in the info...
I thought the Caps had better TV ratings than the Wizards...

You still in the land of the Rising Sun fella?

Yoshietree, the Caps game will be on CSN+ (and the Wizards game will be on CSN). Go to comcastsportsnet.tv and type in your zip code to find out what channel CSN+ is in your area.

Hello All!
About who could be wearing the "C" tonight, Brads captained a preseason game as I recall. Just a thought. Teams do not throw the C or A around so I'm sure due consideration will be given to whom it bears.
The captaincy tonight will be an interesting compass of leadership mentality of the team so far with BB and crew.
Anyway, Go Caps!!

This is tough to do...watching the Caps and listening to the Bears @ Baby Pens at the same time. Bears game tied 1-1, still in the first period. Bears goal by Lepisto. Machesney in goal. Word is Varlamov will play tomorrow at Bridgeport.

Baby Pens just scored. Machesney has only faced two shots and both went in!! Could be a long night.

The kid that's in goal for the baby pens, John Curry, is the kid they had in goal last year when we faced them in the playoffs, and he's pretty good. Of course, it sounds like the Bears are making it easy for him tonight. Gotta stay out of the box. Glad to hear Walton say that last goal was not Varlamov's fault.

Bears are making a comeback. Now 4-3 baby Pens. Two goals by Kyle Wilson, one late in the second, one early in the third. Machesney is back in goal. I guess they're trying to save Varlamov for tomorrow.

(Jeff Schultz's age + Mike Green's age)/2 = 22.5
That's the problem (and the beauty) of d-men. They get better with time. As hard as it is to watch now, you've got to have faith that its going to get better. The nature of Green's game leads to turnovers and defensive lapses. Schultz has been his partner all of, what, 3 games? Its been said before and it'll be said again. Give them time.

Still made no sense, like most of your messages. You're a complete tool if you can't see what kind of high risk turnover filled style that Bruce has brought this team. Serves him right for playing Semin in a 1 goal game in the last 2 minutes. Semin can't play defense but yet he's out there taking a stupid penalty.

Now that was a hockey game! They looked much more focused than the last several games and Johnson was on his game. They got a little sloppy in the third, but I think they did a much better job tonight.
Posted by: isaacc7 | November 8, 2008 9:36 PM | Report abuse
How can Schultz get worse than last year (excluding the last little bit)? And its not only a dozen games in. The team as a whole (with a few exceptions) isn't "better" than it was last year. Breathe, cstanton1, breathe.
Game over. Green and Schultz managed to avoid bumbling over themselves long enough for the win. *rolls eyes*

Don't matter what Alex scores, I'll take it. Just a matter of time for OV. He's prob the best non-scoring guy on ice right now. It'll come. Hopefully against Kolzig.

Wait, that was Schultz who blocked the shot, right? And that was Semin who scored the empty net, right? And under 2 goals allowed in the last 3?
Just checking.
But hey, go ahead and bench the young guys to put old guys in there genius.
Posted by: Section117 | November 8, 2008 9:42 PM | Report abuse
So is it easier for a goalie to face his old team (in that he knows players' moves) or is it easier for a team to face their old goalie (in that they know his weakness(es))?
Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | November 8, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse
Well, if Kolzig plays the same way he played most of last season then it definitely favors the Caps shooters. I mean, they WILL have to decide whether they want to go 5-hole, or 7-hole, or forehand-backhand if they get a breakaway, or just put it over his glove hand......
Nice game tonight...let's keep it going on Monday!

Posted by: Section117 | November 8, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse
I might be thinking to far ahead here, but am I the only one who's worried that if Semin keeps these numbers up he's gonna be asking for an Ovechkin like contract in a year or so and were not gonna be able to keep him?
Posted by: mimi72555 | November 8, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse
By then we'll have a better idea who isn't going to fit in the Plan. He was injured a lot last year too, 1 year isn't enough to justify a big contract.
Think it'll fly? :)
Posted by: austinsteve | November 8, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse
WHat a great game! Johnson looks amazing. Other than that one bad deflection, he had a shutout. The 3rd and 4th lines played great, though Stecks looked a little rusty. But the D played great, Sloan looked very good, Jurcina played to his size without being caught out of position, same with Erskine. That was important.
Semin was going to get a huge contract no matter what. The guy is sick. That penalty was crap, it was Gomez' skating and not the half stick touch. What a great empty netter.
Great great game.

First of all, if you called this a boring game you need to see your doctor and adjust the meds.
Second, I'm gonna say it. Johnny is our number one goalie. He plays with confidence in net and the rest of the team plays with confidence when he's in net. Sorry Jose, but you just seem to look too shakey, maybe it would have worked out with a little more veteran defensive corps but, well...
Posted by: TheCapitalist1 | November 8, 2008 10:22 PM | Report abuse
He's leading the league in +/- right now. After last season's -18, I guess anything is possible, including having to move some guys to pay him. *coughErskineJuicecough*

Johnny is now tied for 5th in the league in SV% at .929 and 5th in GAA with 2.12. Not too shabby. He's now officially my second favorite Cap.

@117
Not sure if you know yet, but it was Ron Duguay (sp?), old Ranger.
For anyone saying the Caps D stinks, they gave up one goal tonight and it was a PP with an errand tip to boot. They are playing better D now especially knowing they have a better goaltender in net.
Also, I get the pleasure of going to the Bears game tomorrow in Bridgeport. Looking forward to seeing the baby Caps. I hope Varlamov is in goal.

IMHO Johnson is the better goaltender. He is much quicker than Theodore between the pipes and seems to have better positioning. He doesn't give up the rebounds like Theodore does also. Johnson is going to have a bad game where he will be like swiss cheese, but all goalies will here and there.

Awesome game. I took a friend to his first ever caps game and he loved it. His only other hockey game had been in Philly while there on work and he said our crowd was much louder and rowdier haha.
Ovechkin can't buy a break, but I think when he does the goals will come in bunches.
Backstom looked a lot like the old backstrom tonight.
Our first two goals were "dirty" goals. Maybe the team will learn something from shooting the puck and crashing the net vs trying to thread the needle every time.
Johnson was awesome tonight. He needs to play at least half of our games until we see reason not to.
Posted by: SombreroGuy | November 8, 2008 11:36 PM | Report abuse
Just got home. Er...paging our Eeyores...paging our Eeyores. Please report to the blog for black lipstick.
Backstrom is just fine. I was disappointed when Nicky didn't get credit for the first goal, but he was right there, and he was one of the few who seemed to remember what a forecheck is. He was a beast out there tonight.
Speaking of beasts - JOHNNY! What's not to love? If he keeps up like this he deserves to be our #1.
I saw a lot more to like in our defense - very seldom were they out of position or not there. Even Green was where he belonged 95% of the time. Wonder if that has anything to do, as someone suggested, with being able to rely on the goaltender?
Sloan looked pretty good out there tonight, IMO.
I do wish they'd be more aggressive in taking the puck from the other team rather than waiting for the setup.
