Tonight's Lineup; Alexandre Giroux Sent Down

Jose Theodore will start for the Caps and is expected to oppose Steve Valiquette. I'm hearing Henrik Lundqvist has the flu.

A win tonight will give the Caps their best record through 40 games. Ever. They are 25-11-3; the best mark through 40 games came in 1985-86, when the Caps went 25-11-4.

Based on warmups, here's how they'l should line up:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Nylander-Semin
Fehr-Steckel-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Alzner-Jurcina
Collins-Morrisonn

One more thing: With Alexander Semin back, winger Alexandre Giroux has been returned to Hershey.

Katie will handle the post game notes and quotes. So check back in a few hours.

Does anyone have a link for streaming the game? I'm currently overseas and cannot find a watering hole that has NHL :(.

The Rangers look hungry. This should be a good one.

DIVE!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Did you see the Crosby fight? Looks like he was trying to undress the guy.

Posted by: JayHoo89 | January 3, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Well the Panthers undressed the Pens 6-1, ha! And Boston lost -- time for the Caps to put this one away and move up on the Bruins

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Not surprised about the All Star votes. I thought the NHL said they were going to look into the irregular voting? I guess changing it would have been admitting their system was flawed.

Rangers do look up for it but I think we have matched them ok so far. Nyls seems to be playing well.

Hi gang,

Sorry to play "devil's advocate," but for your protection, please do due diligence prior to using third-party links to access licensed NHL streaming broadcasts. I wouldn't want anyone on this site to be implicated for copyright infringement.

Yosh,
Have you found a link? The atdhe one works for me. Where "overseas" are you?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

1 goal or less and he is no longer three-or-more

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Maybe one or more of the Canadians will show a bit of class and give up his starting spot in the all star game. If I am not mistaken Tanquay has been hurt, could a reason as any.........

Ouch, Clarkie got caught with a belter there.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Clark shuoldn't get in a fight with that cast, but Redden deserved to get smacked for all that cheap stuff

Not sure Ovie got all of that shot.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Dave, I think you are right on watching the replay

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

OK Fehr was robbed

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are really buzzing -- let's go Caps!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

OV -- Shortie and 1st in goals!!!!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

How can OV not be starting in the Allstars. This fan balloting is nonsense. The players should pick.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Jim,
I'll give you the Fehr one!!

Not a fan of Ovie on the PK.....normally! Great shot.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

OV and Semin are great on the PK -- always a threat. Gordo has been a beast on the PK lately. Steckel also good as of late on the PK. Starting to look like a for-real playoff team by never giving up and playing playoff teams tough

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

I like the principal of letting the fans vote for the AllStar starters but there has to be a better way. Whats wrong with giving a ballot paper to fans at one home game per team. Those are completed and counted and the starters taken from that.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

OK, Dave I can go with home game voting, but not the internet -- too much cheating. I still think that players and coaches can be involved in the process.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Jim,
Fans pick the starters, players/coaches vote to fill the remaining slots and coaching positions.

Will that do you?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Sure, why not? As long as no more online voting

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

if i understood how the 'text' voting worked. you could text 'habs' or 'pens' or 'caps' to whatever the number was and it would automatically select every player listed for that team - at least the ones nhl.com had listed

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

What the hect was that? Crosby fights. Semin fights. Strange day.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 3, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

These refs are a joke

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

I love Sem, I really do but first thing tomorrow Brash shows him how to throw a punch.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Semin on top of Stall and the way he was "punching" reminded of that scene from A Christmas Story where Ralphie takes on the school bully.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 3, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

SEMIN WENT APE SPIT ON THAT MOFO!!!! Sadly, gone for the game....

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 3, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

when brash is done then maybe OV can get him a little better style of shirt to wear under his jersey

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

What, you're not impressed by the slap-like things Semin was raining down? Joe Beninati called it "playing the bongos", which is just about right as far as how hard he was hitting . . .

Posted by: bucky_katt | January 3, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Did I say these refs are a joke -- come on

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Also whats up with the number of chains Semin had round his neck? He looked like a Russian Mr T!

I ain't gettin in no penalty box fool!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

ROTFLOL at Semin, the bongo master. That was hysterical.

Posted by: perspective6 | January 3, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Dave
you're right - he could be even faster/better without those 10lbs (i guess that would like 2574 stone to you) of jewelery around his neck

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Just got home during second intermission and tuned in the Caps on TV and the Bears on radio. Apparently when Giroux got sent down he made a quick flight to Hartford because he's in the lineup for the Bears game. He's got 3 assists...yet he couldn't do squat when he was in DC. Go figure.
Anyway Bears leading 5-2 with goals by Aucoin, Mink, Pinizzotto, Wilson and Mink.

And yea, Semin needs some fighting lessons!

Posted by: tess2201 | January 3, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

it's probably a good thing semin got a dq - he can't be cross checked in the lower back now

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Bout time!!! The Rangers are playing like complete chumps

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

wtf -- the puck was no where near the goalie

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | January 3, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Capt Kirk,
14 lbs = 1 stone

Finish it here boys

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 3, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Now 6-2 Bears late in the third. Goal by Giroux.

Alex Giroux #1 star

Semin fights like a girl, lol!

Posted by: rmcazz | January 3, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Missed most of the first two periods, but I did get to see that lovely "fight" by Semin. I don't think I can put my amusement into words. Russians and Canadians are still on. Was tied 4-4 last time I looked in the 3rd. Russians spending quality time in the box, but most of the Canadian penalties are from Delly. He's starting to worry me.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 3, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Semin will likely never live that one down :). And it's already on YouTube. What a world we live in.

Posted by: geauxcaps | January 3, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

russians 5-4 with just over 2 minutes to go

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 3, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Who was cooking the crow earlier? I said Russian wouldn't stand a chance against Canada, but they're up 5-4 with 2 minutes left.

I'm just sippin' Makers Mark.. celebrating ANOTHER Caps win.. watching playoff football.. and reading the comments on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette web site..

Good times.. good times..

OK This one almost made me spit out my Makers Mark it was so great:

"If Sid is so good, then why has he scored just 2 goals in 16 games?"

And just when I thought the Pens' fans comments couldn't get any better, here's another gem:

"Maybe Semin is right."

Good times.. good times..

Oneal

Posted by: TheRealOneal | January 3, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

holy cow. Canada ties it up with 5.4 seconds left. Russian #3 skating herbies tonight if they lose.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 3, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

-Solid game
-Theodore proving his case
-Looks like we've got the old-20-goal-scorer-Clarkie back
-Fehr was flying. Unfortunate he didn't get a goal
-Semin looked good, his first game back since being injured. And his fight was hysterical!

Posted by: elicea | January 3, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

Canada-Russia going to a shootout.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 3, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Three or more no more! He's really picked up his game. I thought his second half streaks were just a fantasy but maybe he can become the true #1 guy.

Semin is a little girl with his slaps and pink shirt but it was pretty funny. Cant believe its already on youtube.

Caps are just on a roll and watch out Bruins!

Posted by: bleedred | January 3, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Check out this gem from the Pens blog:
"Obviously you either know nothing about hockey or are a caps fan (Sorry that was redundant)"

Posted by: Erika29 | January 3, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

I watched the game on MSG and even those announcers thought it was ridiculous about the ASG. They made the comment that the Caps never changed how they played from beginning to end. They were consistent and tonight that included a very good defensive game. If they can win a game by scoring 7 goals one night and only 2 the next night, that is great flexibility in style.

We had better keep the winning up. Although we are up by 10, the Canes are starting to heat up as well.

i missed tonights game, can someone give me a little lowlight/highlight run down and possible a link to semin fighting?

Posted by: richmondphil | January 3, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

So just got back...

- You apparently can fight like a girl and STILL beat a Staal brother. Who'd have thunk it?

- The boys have got to figure out a way to crack that aggressive forecheck. It reminded me of the Philly series, and hopefully it's not a blueprint as to how to beat this team, especially if there's a rookie still in the 6 d-men come April.

Overall it was a good high atmosphere win which helps them get ready for Philly, but there's still room for improvement in play, especially when it comes to breaking out of their own zone.

Having a wonderful hockey night -- Caps win, Canada pulls out a crazy win and goes to the gold medal game, and Semin's antics are endlessly entertaining.

Posted by: newbrunswickgirl | January 3, 2009 10:57 PM | Report abuse

wow there semin, hahah.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 3, 2009 11:00 PM | Report abuse

That was the fight of the year. I want to see highlights of that EVERY SINGLE GAME. I laughed so hard that people turned around to look at me.

I love Alexander Semin.

That was awesome.

I would rather him NOT get a misconduct for a jersey thing, though -- let's tie that down, shall we?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | January 3, 2009 11:03 PM | Report abuse

To be fair, it's the first and (only? last?) time Semin and Rob Ray will get mentioned in the same sentence.

Posted by: Section117 | January 3, 2009 11:06 PM | Report abuse

Just got home from the game. I love Alex Semin!

Oh, and apparently if you get bongo-slapped by Semin you get the third star of the game. Who knew? Bet the Ranger who actually scored a goal is ticked.

Posted by: Kim-3 | January 3, 2009 11:08 PM | Report abuse

OK folks. Just got back from the game and I'm getting ready to go have a few down at Greavy's.

As for the Sasha fight, Rangers/Pens/Flyers fans are getting Semin Jerseys and going to wear bras over top of them next time we show up at their barn. Yeah, it was that bad live from four rows and 25 ft away. NHL On The Fly just showed it and Moog and Milbury thought it was a riot.

I'm hoping this shocks Semin into getting with the program. Geez...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 3, 2009 11:11 PM | Report abuse

ah, semin.

his limp-wrist drum-beating reminded me of when i was in girl fight in sixth grade...and got beat.

the shag-mullet, mr T chains, jorts...

i love it. this is caps hockey.
