Tonight's lineup: Bruins at Caps

Jose Theodore is set to start in goal and will face Tuukka Rask as the Caps host Boston in game No. 79. Rask leads the NHL in both goals against average (1.97) and save percentage (.931).

Coach Bruce Boudreau said he might rest some of his star players down the stretch. And, tonight, he is doing just that by giving Mike Green the night off. Whether he'll sit other stars tomorrow in Pittsburgh remains to be seen, but there's always that chance.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Walker-Belanger-Fehr
Chimera-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Poti-Schultz
Morrisonn-Corvo
Erskine-Sloan

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

One more note: The Caps announced tonight that they have signed free agent Dustin Stevensen to a three year entry level deal that begins next season. From the team:

Stevenson, 20, is a 6'5", 220-pound native of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, who plays for the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The La Ronge captain was named the SJHL Player of the Year after posting 47 points (11 goals, 36 assists) and 134 penalty minutes in 56 games. He finished third among league defensemen in scoring and tied for eighth in the league in penalty minutes.

I'll be back for a little bit after the game before jumping in my car and heading to Pittsburgh.

Apparently BB doesn't realize I'm the finals of fantasy hockey this week. I need Mike Green so please don't rest him anymore! Or Flash. Or Knuble. Thank you.

Teams will focus on Ovie in the playoffs, he will dish to Backs, Backs gets the Conn Smythe, and an AWESOME deal when he re-signs with us.

When we get the the CUP, it will all be worth it!

So, it looks like there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call on the ice, whichever of the two options that might have been.

But what is the rule: if the puck is on edge, does "all the way over" the line mean as seen from above (looked like no goal, to me) or just white ice between the part of the puck contacting the ice and the goal line (clearly a goal)?

corvo - yeah - sometimes he can play d

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 5, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Capt Kirk, I get that. My question concerns the nature of a "goal." Is it "all the way" over as seen from above, or, as in this case, white ice between the puck and the goal line.

The fact that the puck was rolling, on its edge, is what brings this question into play.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 5, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

So many wiffs by the Caps. Starting to look like the Nats.

Posted by: cbs75 | April 5, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

in that case - the rule is the entire puck must be across the goal line
i would take that to mean a puck leaning on edge that is still partially above the goal line would be 'no goal'

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 5, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: TJ91 | April 5, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

defensively he's a slight downgrade.

We had em at one shot on goal for the first 10 mins, and then the predictable letdown. 11 shots in the last half of that period. Good news is, Green and Carlson are both out and they both add a lot defensively. I doubt Sloan will get much time in the playoffs.

somewhere rj umberger cracks a knowing smile.

Imagine if we played a team with better speed upfront. I could see us getting bottled up quite a bit.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Capt Kirk, I agree with you. As does the decision in a contested goal between the Coyotes and Flames a couple years back. (Link on Japers' game thread.)

Interesting that that's not how the rulebook reads, however. It just talks about the goal line. Should say something about the goal line actually being a plane that has the thickness of the goal bar and that rises from the ice, yadda-yadda-yadda . . .

(sorry - the reg. season is almost done. This sorta thing can now occupy my brain-space even though it's done and gone 30 mins ago.)

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 5, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Joe Corvo can not play defense. It's that simple.

He loses almost every battle along the boards and just can't make consistently good decisions with the puck.

Use him on the PP or not at all.

Sorry, McPhee, that was a failed deal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 5, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

considering bos has everything to play for and the caps pretty much don't - they are not just going through the motions. they look like they really want to win this game

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 5, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

in case some of you haven't heard, these 4 remaining games don't matter... otherwise they wouldn't be sitting Green and talking about giving Holtby a start tomorrow

take a pill and just enjoy the game :)

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

these games do matter to an extent that the team needs to find its true stride before entering the playoffs. You don't want to enter the playoffs cold or not playing well. Thats how you get down in a series real quick. The end result may not matter but everything else does.

tmac2yao:
if green breaks both legs or loses a limb - then corvo can play

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 5, 2010 8:04 PM | Report abuse

If Corvo was just a FA signee without a lot of hoopla, you know just a quiet pickup, then I'd have more faith in the Caps benching him. Seeing as how his fate directly reflects on McPhee's competence, I have a feeling he'll get every chance in the world to screw up before riding pine.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I know it is sort of funny how Erskine has no ability to hang on to his stick, but it often leads to scoring opportunities for other teams.

In addition, the reason there is suck a lack of speed on defense is that Erskine and Sloan have replaced Green and Carlson. That is a big speed difference there. Almost all of the Bruins scoring chances have occurred with that pairing on the ice.

@cstanton1

Corvo has good speed for a defender. So is that a quality you like about him?

Posted by: sgm3 | April 5, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: sgm3 | April 5, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

what good is speed if you can't utilize it effectively? Whats he gonna do when he catches upto a forward? he can't push them off the puck, he just kinda humps them from behind.

Speed is useless unless its utilized, forward or defense-wise. see todd krygier and jeff toms.

of course Umberger was right. He's not the first one to come up with that theory. This has been mentioned for the better part of 2.5 yrs. This team is heavily unbalanced towards offense.

The caps response shoulda been, yeah we can't expect to win unless we tighten things up a lot. Period. None of this silly posturing.

Well boys, you're seeing signs of what's to come.

Don't agree? Why am I wrong? They knew today would be a playoff type game, Umberger called them out after last game, so you can't blame it on 'not caring'.

The caps system is inherantly flawed when teams play tight.

Take OV out of the line up, and maybe things will change.

Posted by: floms | April 5, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

the only good thing that can come out of this is the Caps put their pride aside and admit that a Corvo isn't a regular type of player. They've got him slated for too many prominent minutes. The more he sucks between now and round 1, the better.

this could be the first time in history that Flash leads the team in hits in a game, sweet!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm usually not one of those 'the world's coming to an end' caps fans after a bad game, but I'm recognizing a familiar trend in their game play.

And OVi is really starting to show the limitations in his game. The way he is playing righ now, he's a detriment to the team...I never thought I would say that, but it is black and white. The rest of the team has gotten to a point where they don't need him.

He eats up tons of minutes, and causes tons of turnovers. And what makes that even worse, is everyone tries to feed him the puck when he's on the ice.

His play is so damn predictable. He makes the same moves, and tries to bean the entire team.

it'll definitely be proven or disproven if that can be done. Still haven't seen a bad defensive team overcome all its flaws with a great offense. Granted, not many offenses look like what we have but still.

is that what the "stats" say? Let me guess, you think Thornton's nothing but a goon. Yet, he's played on all 4 lines. He's played on the PK, on the PP. Gets over 100 shots on goal in a season. And he does all that while being their resident tough guy. Yeah, you're right, he's not an important part of their lineup.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

nice to see 4 lines still getting rolled. Not usual for BB to do that esp in a tight game.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Well, look, SJ last year won the President's cup. It doesn't mean anything!

My concers are:

1. Our system; +

2. OVi's style of play magnifies the problems of our system.

With out OVi, the puck is distributed much better, Backs plays better.

Neither of those 2 things will change over night.

esp when they don't feel a need to change them. They're going to sink or swim with their current systems and personnel. If it proves to be a failure, you hope they admit it and address it quickly. Of course, after going 1-2 the previous 2 playoff seasons, they didn't do much to change over the D though it was clearly exposed.

Boston played well and missed a lot of "sure" goals it seemed. I know the Bruins and Claude Julien will complain about the missed high sticking call, and the truth is the refs did miss it and it should've been a 4 minute PP for the Bruins. The only thing that worried me tonight was that for a low scoring team like Boston, we were running around in our defensive zone way too much. I think I prefer the Flyers now... Rask is really good and could steal a series for them. Last note, the Bruins must be the boring-est team to watch. Wow.

I never said he was worthless, nor have I ever implied he "sucks", like you seem to think I do. You said he was a "Key Player" for the Bruins...that's just funny. It was an absurd statement then, and it's an absurd statement now. It has nothing to do with stats, or whatever misconception you seem to have about how I don't know how Shawn Thornton plays.

If Shawn Thornton was on this team, he wouldn't be a key player. Nor would I be mocking him.

At least Corvo dished out 3 hits. That's like a month's worth for him usually.

I was at least hoping that he could use his speed to get to pucks first but even when he does win races, all it takes is a little push and he's likely to lose possession.

Oh well, at least he's trying to communicate out there and do his best. Unfortunately, his best doesn't represent an upgrade from where we were before the trade. Pothier is by no means a defensive stud but he seems to be at least as good as Corvo, if not better, in his own end.

We basically traded Pothier, a prospect and a pick for a soft, bad decision-making puck carrier with a decent shot that can't even skate or carry the puck like he used to because of recovering from an injury.

I still get this sick feeling that Carolina and Corvo made an evil plan to cost us in the playoffs. I don't really believe that but...

you can talk all you want about defense in the playoffs but you can't simply ignore the goal diffentials of this team.

the Caps are plus 80 and the next best team in the conference is plus 25, the next best in the league, plus 56

I think he said in the last one he was going to do one. Might be wrong about that.

Erskine, Morrisonn and Schultz blocked as many shots as the Bruins.

Morrisonn also led all players on both teams in hits with 5. He's been throwing his body around for weeks now.

He may have been responsible for Bergeron's goal but I still say that he's been our best defenseman ever since making that horrible giveaway in front of Theodore about a month ago and getting benched for the next game.

Our two faceoff specialists both got beat by a 2-to-1 margin in faceoffs. Oddly enough, only Backstrom, Ovechkin and Semin were above 50%.

ShaMo's been great. He still has a few muff ups every now and then, but who doesn't.

don't think I've seen this much disparity since the oilers of the 80's

Posted by: joek443 | April 5, 2010 10:01 PM

All you have to do is go back to last season.

The Bruins finished with 116 points, 53 wins and a +78 goal differential.

The next best team in the East was + 35, followed by +27 and +25.

That's not too different from out situation this season and the Bruins lost in the 2nd round.

So Tarik on his twitter said that Holtby could be up tomorrow?? Is that really going to happen? Does anyone think that really will happen? I think if we did bring him up and let him play tomorrow that would be a great opportunity for Holtby to see what he can do against a great team, on the road. We don't have anything to lose... I think it's a great idea and I hope it happens.

I would prefer for Theo and/or Varly to get as much ice-time leading up into the playoffs.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2010 10:14 PM | Report abuse

yeah but the bruins didn't lead the league in goals by over 40 over the next highest scoring team

with only three games left before the playoffs - i'd rather see varly get more work before holtby - although it would be cool if they beat the pens with holtby in net

If Holtby is up tomorrow for any reason, I have to believe he would be in a backup role unless Varlamov is hurt or something and they want to rest Theodore.

And as much hype as there is surrounding Holtby these days, every goalie on Hershey has similar numbers: http://theahl.com/stats/statdisplay.php?type=goalies&subType=9&season_id=30&leagueId=4&lastActive=&singleSeason=&confId=0

Even Jason Bacashihua is having a career year.

They may all be great goaltenders but they may also be benefiting hugely from playing behind an all-around dominant team.

I think Varly gets the start tomorrow. He need it, unless he is hurt.

Posted by: instinct227 | April 5, 2010 10:23 PM | Report abuse

@joek

Based on your post and the use of the English language, it would appear that you were strictly referring to goal differential.

"you can talk all you want about defense in the playoffs but you can't simply ignore the goal diffentials of this team.

the Caps are plus 80 and the next best team in the conference is plus 25, the next best in the league, plus 56

don't think I've seen this much disparity since the oilers of the 80's"

Your first two statement talked entirely about goal differential and then you made the final statement without any reference to anything like the following:

"yeah but the bruins didn't lead the league in goals by over 40 over the next highest scoring team"

You made two different arguments.

Absolutely Varly starts tomorrow. Great night for Theo tonight.

Another 3 for 3 performance on the PK.

Our forwards and D got back very responsibly tonight. Trouble was we got pinned in our zone far too much and didn't boast a lot of zone time ourselves. More adjustments to come, I think.

way to pull that info!

Again, I've never seen a team no matter how good they were offensively, take it far into the playoffs without at least a solid D. Didn't have to be phenomenal, but the amount of time we get runnin around our own end even against mediocre offensive teams is troublesome.

And ShaMo is one of our best D. Take him out of the lineup and we end up being even softer than a baby's bottom. He just cleans house near the boards. Separates forwards from the puck and keeps them from easily getting back into the play. One gaffe here or there isn't enough to discount his worth. With him, an improved Green, and Carlson, I have a little hope. Schultz needs to amp up his game as well. And if we could get Juice to replace Corvo, even better.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2010 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Strictly from a goal differential perspective, which has a lot more significance than strictly comparing teams by goals for or against, we are in a very similar position to the Bruins of last season.

Having said that, goal differential is a very significant indicator of how good a team is across all sports so being +80 and far ahead of any other Eastern Conference says a lot about how dominant we have been in the regular season.

I prefer not to compare across conferences because of the imbalance in schedules and the fact the West is clearly the more dominant conference based on their heavily lopsided record in inter-conference play.

That's actually a good point and I've that about it.

It's a problem and I'm working on it, both for my sake and for the sake of board members.

Bascially, I agree with you.

As far as my posts on this subject, I was just stating facts.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Claude Julien - shut your mouth as your team had chances on the PP in the third period. It was a bad high stick by your player in OT and may you pay the price. I swear everytime I look at the guy's face it looks like he's smelled a fart.

Great win by the guys and nice to clamp down. Shoane Morrison can't let guys get behind him hence the second Boston goal.

Theo - sparkling saves and strong in net. A nice job tonight. He's focused.

Thank goodness Sloan and Erskine won't be regulars in the playoffs - pray we stay healthy. That duo was not great on the ice tonight.

A nice tight win as some key players get a rest. Time to keep the season push rolling in the Steel City tomorrow night.

It's been a two point night.

umberger's point still stands - a good defensive team will find a way to limit the Caps offensive chances and if that team has any type of offense, they may be able to heavily exploit our defense. That's his point. I agree with it because I've felt that all along. Not saying its gospel because it has to play out. But nothing Umberger said hasn't been hashed out here a few million times.

now maybe against the flyers who have questions in goal, we'll score in bunches so our defensive issues won't cost us a series. But the deeper you go into the playoffs, the more balanced teams you'll face. Thats where our D could cost us.

anyone know when playoff tickets go on sale?

The club sent an e-mail today offering pre-sale tickets to season ticket holders -- 2 max -- for games 1 & 2. I imagine tickets will go on sale Friday, and few will be offered.

Wayne Gretzky >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> RJ Umberger

I think I would rather listen to someone who actually had to go thru something similar to what the current Caps team is going thru than someone who says the same ole stuff people have been saying for years about playoff hockey

never mind the fact the game has CHANGED since the lockout as Buccigross wrote a few weeks ago... it favors offense like any other sport these days.

-----------------

classic case of blinders.

So you think this comment has to come from a Wayne Gretzky in order to have validity. Great, way to narrow it down for convenience sake. The best players don't always make the best evaluators anyway assuming that Gretzky felt a certain way about what it takes to win. Great players can make terrible coaches and GMs, and vice-versa.

Bottom line, no matter WHO made that comment, some fans will always find a way to dismiss it. If that was Gretzky saying that, you'd laugh him off and say he's been out of the game for too long, times have changed.

and again, gretz had a great defensive team. 5 strong defensive dmen and one offensive guy. ZERO correlation between his team and ours.

Scott Stevens was better than Wayne Gretzky

got any other idiotic comparisons???

Man did Corvo have a weak game tonight. Got caught a few times holding onto the puck for too long and gave it away in his own end. That was the risk in picking him up but hopefully he pulls it together for the playoffs. Still need someone to start clearing out the front of the net. In the playoffs teams will just sit players there whenever they get into the zone. But overall not a bad game for a team that's already locked up first against a desperate team. But at this rate Boston is going to be worn out by the end of the regular season with the short bench they'll mostly play with for the last few games.

I love how everybody is slamming Ovie because he's in a slump and those same people are the ones that say he's the best player in hockey when is scoring goal after goal. He's in a slump, everybody has them some time or another. He'll be fine.

Our D sucked tonight, but our best two D men were out. Corvo is not inspiring me in the least bit. He's the weak link in our top 6 D, but I think we'll be fine if we can avoid injuries in the playoffs.

For all this talk about a defensive minded team holding the Caps back in a series...I have got to wonder if perhaps the Caps have what it takes to change their style for a 7 games series.

Last year the very Defensive minded Rangers let by a world class goaltender (who had previously owned the Caps) seemed to rear its ugly head in the first two games of the series, only for the caps to figure out their gaps and find ways to score, taking the team to 7 games, and winning that series (and mind you, game 7 was a very tight defensive match that the caps managed to win).

I get the fact that things tighten up in the playoffs (especially the deeper you go), and every team seems to change their game a bit, but I think the Caps are capable of that as well...

I like the caps chances in 7 game series this year, especially with the addition of Knuble (and his overall influence on the team...as I recall last year, what Knuble brings in his dirty/in the goalie's face goals was definitely an area the Caps were sorely lacking in).

Some people will never be happy with this team. Every team has issues, but I think the Caps have as good a shot as any right now.

Go Caps!
