Tonight's lineup: Canadiens at Caps

Based on warmups, it looks like Coach Bruce Boudreau, who was unusually uptight pregame, is going to use the same lineup that took the ice this morning at KCI.

Jose Theodore will start in goal and oppose Jaroslav Halak in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Chimera-Belanger-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Carlson
Morrisonn-Corvo

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

Montreal's lineup, meantime, will be unchanged from Thursday's.

I'll have some notes/quotes/observations later.

CAPS CAPS CAPS!!!

60 minutes of hard hits, crease crashing and goals - they need to set the tone with a 3+ goal victory and crush any hopes mtl might have of winning this series

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Are they saving the in game chat for the Cup series?

I have been away from my PC all day and was hoping that when I came back to it there would be a chat waiting, oh well.

I AM STILL EXCITED! I WANT SOME SERIOUS PAYBACK!

GO CAPS!

Good timing again...

Let's go CAPS. It's either gonna be Caps hockey, the likes of which we've never seen....or a complete dud (i.e. game 7 vs Pens).

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 6:58 PM | Report abuse

And...LET'S GO BEARS!!! as they try to make their series against Bridgeport 3-0 with game 4 coming up tomorrow afternoon. (Talk about a brutal schedule!)

Boudreau doesn't seem like himself.

Ovechkin doesn't seem like himself.

Backstrom doesn't seem like himself.

This team really hasn't played very well in a while.

They need to find it quick.

I cannot B-leave that THEO just gave that one up.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 17, 2010 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Theo's gonna have to make about 10 spectacular saves to make up for that one

All Theo.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 17, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Can we please get Poti out of the lineup? At this point I would take Earskne

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 17, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

We just gave them a cheap goal. It's hard enough to get one by Halak... now that just puts us behind the 8 ball. I say it would've been nice to get the first goal. That's all Theo, there's no way that should ever go in.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Passing just looks off

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 17, 2010 7:17 PM | Report abuse

The offense last game and so far through 7 minutes doesn't look like it usually does in the reg season. We had 47 shots last game but how many good chances did we have? Not many. Change something, Halak isn't getting fooled.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I'll stick with Theo, for better or worse. But if it happens to be for worse, they better not re-sign him.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Just a lot of sloppiness from the Caps. All these big hits they're trying to land usually leave them out of position. They have to hunker down and start making careful, smart plays.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Halak is very confident. If we are to win this series, WE MUST change that.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 17, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

wow surprise. Halak is on his game again. Theo better not let give up any more goals.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

I'm liking the energy, though, and the way the guys are crashing the net. If we can keep this intensity up, I think good things will start happening.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 17, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

At this point someone needs to say - "Okay team - this is the playoffs - time to wake up and play up to the task . . ." (!)

Posted by: Satchelass | April 17, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

It's not fair. Why does Halak make everything look so easy? It's like he's not even trying then when he makes a save he's so nonchalant. It's pissing me off!! Push him around, get in front of him and make his life miserable! GODDDDD!!!!

So Theo looks awful, but how many times are the Caps going to let the Canadiens just skate in with the puck. They're not pressuring at the blue line at all. Schultz pinched before that and missed the puck.

This isn't just Theo. This is a team-wide problem. The Caps are sloppy and stupid right now. Breakdowns everywhere. Too easy to blame Theo for the problems.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

2 goals in 2 shots is probably not good. Both teams look pretty good. But the Capitals are better, and I think the Caps will come back to win this one. If I knew going in that the Caps wouldn't score 3 goals in regulation, I'd have predicted a loss. And I did not predict a loss. Don't panic. Semin is about to score.

sorry, heat of the moment.. yes CDon, theo is not to blame for all but those two goals aren't good to give up... and our defense is so soft, they just step back and let them shoot.

I feel Carlson is going to get a goal from the point tonight. He has been shooting at everything. I love this kid!

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

That was a beautiful shot, definitely. Semin is about to score. It's Semin time. I feel it, deep in my bones.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 17, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Theodore is one of the biggest choking dogs in Caps history.

Posted by: qoheleth78 | April 17, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, you want Theo to stop those shots, but how about the defenders play with a little aggression, rather than back skating and giving the offensive players a ton of cushion? This team is relentless on offense, but on defense, they turn tail real fast and play soft. It's a weird dynamic, and it has the potential to ruin them in the postseason.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

But to be honest, I don't really trust Varly right now, either.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

including the last game, Theo was scored on the last 3 shots he faced... he needed to be pulled

Theodore is mentally soft and too emotionally damaged.

Posted by: qoheleth78 | April 17, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

I think Varly would've stopped that second goal, there may have been a rebound, but you gotta stop those shots.

These Habs are REALLY starting to believe, and assert themselves.

THAT PISSES ME OFF!!!

Who else here seriously doubts Theo starting in Montreal?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 17, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Positives are that a puck hit the back of the net and OV got a shot on goal. So now the players know what both look like, so it should give them a modicum of confidence.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Pisses me off too! WTF?

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 17, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Caps defense is too slow - they back off because if they get too close, those gnats will step around them. Forwards need to come back and help out. And score goals too - do not know how they can do both.

Need to tie this up soon.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake

I think it will be Varly on Monday. BB says he has a longer leash this year, I don't believe him. He'll be bold and stay with Varly.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Ok go to the locker room and regroup and come out strong.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 17, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

They gotta get these pucks through. I don't know what they can do to fix that, but they've gotta slip 'em through and put 'em on goal.

Carlson's looking shaky tonight. And that play Corvo made on Cam late in the first, where he crowded him, is what all Caps D-men need to start doing to the Montreal forwards.

Brendan Morrison is passing behind the man instead of leading him. It kills the attack. Rust I suppose? Also Carlson needs to go into his man with both hands on the stick and hit the guy. I think the second goal came off one of his turnovers.

And I'm sure the shots are way in our favor, too... just like last game.

In both games, we've come out at 110% and have been either tied or losing after one.

It's as if we're going in for the kill right away and if it doesn't net us the lead, the other team will be in the game and have more energy to work with down the stretch.

They can't afford to run out of energy tonight.
