Tonight's lineup: Canadiens at Caps

Semyon Varlamov will start in goal tonight and will oppose Jaroslav Halak, who returns to the Habs' net after backing up Carey Price on Wednesday.

Defenseman Shaone Morrisonn will be sidelined for a second straight game with an undisclosed injury. The team has not commented on his injury, but he was wearing a brace on his arm this morning.

With Morrisonn out, Tyler Sloan will suit up for the second straight game.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Fleischmann-Belanger-Semin
Laich-Morrison-Fehr
Chimera-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Carlson-Poti
Sloan-Corvo

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

But sure to check back for between the period updates from Gene Wang as well as a post game chat.

Semin just going to shoot from the circles all night. Those shots don't work on Halak. Maybe Price but not Halak. Remember game 1?

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 23, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

all you doom n gloomers and sky is falling chicken littlers need to chill out man

Even if the Caps lose this one, and they go back to Montreal and lose there, there's still game 7. And so far we're 1-2 in game 7s so murphy's law says we should win the next one.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Montreal is getting little to no resistance entering our zone.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 23, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

More porous defense.

Imagine if Montreal wasn't the worst 5-on-5 team in the NHL.

I am definitely a Semin hater. I'll lead the charge. He could score 6 goals tonight and I'll still want to trade him. He's the laziest player on the team. After seeing him in the Olympics, he's a shell of his full potential with the Caps.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 23, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

this makes 15 of the last 18 games that the Caps will not be putting in a 60 min effort

this isn't mindless bashing, tis the truth. And I gotta say, thats on one Bruce Boudreau. He cannot inspire his team to shake that trend.

Even if we come back and win, its pretty disturbing to see this type of start in a game that we need to close out quickly.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

wow maybe they should just go home. they dont seem to interested in playing let alone winning.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 23, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

We're getting completely owned.

It should be 3-0.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 23, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

this is the opposite series...we pretty much suck at home, our PP blows and semin is not scoring... but great backcheck.

everything that was good for us during the season is non-exist right now.

hmm..giving up breakaways on PPs. Shocking! Its fun to see this team focus on nothing but offense!

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

well... i guess we forgot we're playing a hungry desperate team. what's wrong with our team and not playing 60min?

Posted by: natresgroup | April 23, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: instinct227 | April 23, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

well, something I've never seen before - the Caps got off to a slow start.

Also, the brilliant pairing of Corvo and Sloan and the continued subpar play of our top pair -Schultz/Green

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

honestly, how do we expect to win the cup if we can't play a full 60 min game?

We need a spark... somewhere, somehow, we need a spark now because we forgot our game plan.

Posted by: instinct227 | April 23, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 23, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Semin get your lazy butt in there and help Laich u big dummy. Man does Semin need to grow a pair

otoh, finally a good shift by Semin. Strong work along the boards, nice hit, nice power move to the net. So it just proves he CAN play that way if he wants to

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't worry about it. The Caps play great coming from behind and the 2nd and especially 3rd periods are our best periods anyhow. We're still very much in this game.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 23, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

man Gordo got moved out of that crease like a feather.

Carlson about to land a big hit on Plekanec then he eased up after the whistle, at least he's playing hard

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

We've had exactly one game in this series with a total team effort, defensively.

They realize how much effort it plays that way consistently so now they're back to their run-n-gun ways.

@lloydchristmas -

i totally know what you're saying, but we can't keep expecting to be able to come back all the time. We HAVE to play better for a FULL 60 minutes.

Let's go boys, pick it up.

Regardless of what happens in these playoffs, it's time to build a team with good defensive habits.

I agree, but they've been doing this for years now. I don't see it changing any time soon. At least they're a team that can come back in a scoring fury. There is always hope.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 23, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Is there any update on Juice. We could definately use him.

Posted by: instinct227 | April 23, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

good play Sloan

i like knuble and i know he scored a shortie, but he seems kinda slow to be a consistently effective PKer

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Sweet, another Caps' PP.

That means more short-handed opportunities for Montreal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 23, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: instinct227 | April 23, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 23, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

love the transformation of Backstrom from the timid kid who played the Flyers 2 yrs ago to a confident strong 2 way forward today.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Flaccid.

Listlessly flaccid.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 23, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | April 23, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Like I said, we're lucky to be ahead 3-1 in games.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 23, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

i kinda like it when the Caps get behind. They play with more emotion. Maybe they should give every team a 1 goal handicap advantage over us to start a game, then we're more likely to see a 60 min effort

at this point i'd be happy with 45 mins of effort.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

when will bb realize our pp is in need of a change...put ov up front and sit nylander oops i mean semin

Posted by: jdove80 | April 23, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

who's gonna stick a foot in Bruce's butt? He can't motivate his team before a big game whats he gonna do between periods? frankly judging by his comments he himself is happy if he gets 2 periods of good hockey from his team. We clearly stole game 4 with goaltending. The series should be tied right now because both teams have been evenly matched over the course of 4 games.

I'm pretty sure if we had played Boston or Philly we'd be down in the series right now.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

BREAKING NEWS: An APB has been put out for the Washington Capitals team that played WITH URGENCY AND PLAYED LIKE THEY WANTED. Last known location - Montreal.

What a disgusting first period. This is the team from Game 1 AGAIN. Lazily skating around and trying to get the puck out of the zone. La dee dah let's frolic around OH WAIT we are playing game. WAKE THE **** UP.

Agreed with changes needed on the PP. How dumb is Boudreau? Carlson has been clutch and deserves to be on the PP units. He should take Green's spot on the #1 unit. At least he doesn't fan and miss. Carlson is a better D-man overall and I don't care if Green was named a Norris nominee today. Carlson is the clutch guy on the blueline right now.

Unreal. At least Boudreau didn't mince his words when he said they must not have watched the Pittsburgh game last night? Oh well. We'll find out more about this team in the next 40 minutes.

There's about 10 players on the caps who should be made to watch the way Ian Laperriere plays. The fact that he blocked yet another shot with his face while his team was up 3-0 is exactly the kind of effort you need from your team to close out the series.

Give the other team credit they're playing well. It's not the optimum matchup for the Caps. The Caps seem like they're playing the equivalent of a zone defense - not going to work against shifty little forwards. The Caps need to play man on man and take the body more, especially in neutral ice. Nobody should be taking a shift off for the rest of this game.

I challenge anyone watching this game to remember the last time one of the Capitals actually hit somebody tonight.

This is a pathetic effort. Absolutely unacceptable. That indicts all of the Caps, really, but the ones accountable are Boudreau and Ovechkin, in that order. These guys just weren't ready to play tonight and even after falling behind and, frankly, getting embarrassed in the first period, they still haven't come out with any sense of purpose here in period no. 2

Shameful.

terribly weak play by Semin on the halfboards again, two chances to clear the puck and turns it over to the Habs for a scoring chance. Carlson saved us there

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I challenge anyone watching this game to remember the last time one of the Capitals actually hit somebody tonight.
-----------------------------------

we're one of the worst hitting teams in the reg season so it shouldnt' surprise anyone that we continue that trend into the playoffs.

The better hitting teams finish about 45-50 hits in the playoffs, we have a hard time reaching 25.

Semin and Schultz both missed opportunities to recover the puck in our def end because they refused to hit a Habs player. Semin twice on the same shift. So hitting is more than just a stat, it has tangible benefits.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

2 strong hits there one by Carlson one by Chimera. But then that is immediately followed up by an extended scoring chance by the Habs because Poti is unable or unwilling to get physical with an Habs forward along the end boards. Just a simple play that someone like Erskine could easily make that a player like Poti or Semin or Schultz won't make.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 23, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

cstanton, my point is they just weren't fully engaged tonight. I'm not saying they just need to go hit people but when guys like ovechkin, etc, do bring a physical edge it's a sign that this team is engaged. That was not the case tonight.

Disgraceful performance.
