Tonight's lineup: Canadiens at Caps
Michal Neuvirth will make his season debut tonight at Verizon Center as the Caps look to win their second straight game and for the sixth time in their past seven contests. Carey Price, meanwhile, will get the nod for the Canadiens.
The Caps, as you know by now, are really banged up. They're so banged up, in fact, owner Ted Leonsis blogged about it earlier today:
No Alexander Semin; Mike Knuble; Boyd Gordon; Quintin Laing; Milan Jurcina; Shaone Morrisonn. Jose Theodore is out for a few days and, of course, Michael Nylander is deciding where he wants to play. It is funny. That is about $20 million in payroll not in the lineup.
With that said, here's what the Caps' lineup should look like:
Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fleischmann
Laich-Morrison-Clark
Steckel-Perreault-Fehr
Sloan-Beagle-Bradley
Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Carlson
Erskine-Pothier
Goalies
Neuvirth
Varlamov
I'll have more after the game.

Seeing all the Bears that are coming up and performing well just reinforces my belief that the people in the front office know what they're doing.
GO CAPS!!!

Man, that's a 3rd line that can do some damage. Fehr haters, whatever; that kid's always giving everything he's got.
I love this team. The forwards anyway.

Also interesting seeing Poti and Carlson together. Both puck-movers. Interesting. Alzner's the more stay at home guy.

Interesting "Nylander is deciding where he wants to play...". Suppose he says Washington?

kcbrichmond -
My thoughts exactly. Funny if Nyls speaks publicly and says "I want to play for the Capitals now!" What's the organization going to say then??? I think Ted put his foot in his mouth.
Tarik, head to Rockville and get the statements before some other city's beat writer does.

Ted lists all of the players who are out for the game tonight, and there is a lot of talent there. Then I look at tonight's line-up and I don't see any particular weaknesses there (I am optimistic that Neuvirth will play well). That says something about the team's depth.

Let's go Neuvy!
Wow, did anyone see the clip of some Ducks fans fighting over Scott Niedermayer's hockey stick? Wow... it's just a hockey stick. People need to chill..

Bears at Binghamton tonight.

Michal is so calm. I love that about him. Always in great position. Wake up offense!

That PP was a perfect example of why I prefer BMo at the point. I love Ovi, but he just turns the puck over too often from there.
Tyler Sloan's probably feeling a little like a ping-pong ball the way he's bouncing between wing and defender, but it should make him a more complete and valuable player in the long run. GO CAPS!!!

Great work by Neuvy so far!
Posted by: wocoliz | November 20, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse
I am sure Sloan likes bouncing between F and D and not being on the Bears instead. Him being able to play both is the reason he is here so he will do whatever is asked.

It kills me to say it, but Perrault > Gordon. He is just so much more hungry.

Well, I've never been a big Boyd Gordon fan so I would be happy to see Matty take his place permanently.

I agree Gordon is the odd man out but gordon does win a lot of faceoffs. If steckel were to go down who takes the important defensive zone draws. I would healthy scratch gordon and figure out the blue line.

It's agonizing at times to watch Ovechkin just floating around in the defensive zone with a blatantly obvious unmarked opposing player.
The same can be said about his turnovers at the blueline.

Just wondering.....has Green shown enough "grit" tonight for capsfan01?? Also, this team is starting to gel into that total team BB has been preaching....Backie was in that last scrum in front of the net clearing the crease for HIS goalie....this team will be extremely scary as the season goes on to others competing for Lord Stanley....

Posted by: cbs75 | November 20, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse
Carlson looks like he is rushing his passes a lot especially in the D zone. He already has two D zone turnovers and got beat on what could have been the third goal as well but he was saved by Fehr's back check.

Something seems a little out of sync among the forwards tonight. Not sure what it is. I also didn't like Bradley on the top line. It shifted the defensive coverage even more toward Ovechkin because Bradley isn't as much of an offensive threat as someone like Flash. I think that line hampered OV a little more in the second. I'd like to see Backstrom become a little more selfish occasionally, too. He had a seam to shoot up the middle in the latter stages of the second, but he made a pass to OV instead.
Posted by: CDon | November 20, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse
CDon, Backstrom will always look for the pass first....just second nature for him ...but I love how he got in the muck in fron of the net tonight to protect his goalie.....he is turning into that two way center we need.....I expect the boys to pick it up in the third and gain the two points that are expected...

Laich tripped him the way the Canadien player (forgot who it was) tripped Brendan Morrison but Morrison gets the diving call. Haha. Tell me how Morrison could've stayed on his feet after that. What a joke.
This was a strange game. How often do we score 1 goal at home? Sucks for Neuvy, he had some bad luck.

Too much line tinkering tonight from BB. No one developed any chemistry tonight. It seemed like everyone had an opportunity to play on the opposite side of OV tonight. I think it might be time to move BMo off the point on the PP, too. He seems to have trouble getting his shot through. Need to move OV back up there. Also seems like the PP clicks more with Semin in the lineup.
Posted by: CDon | November 20, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse
@rachel216
The diving call on BMo was awful. I'm sure it was a makeup call for Green's punch to a MTL player's face that wasn't called. Still, Laich's trip was weak, and the hook on Perreault wasn't called.

This team needs some consistency in goal. Using a crap shoot model for goalie doesn't help the team or defense. Find a starter and stick with him.
What's with the player of game honors? Eric Fehr is now going to receive $100 gift certificate from Palm?? Really?

Pissed, perhaps, but also tired. The Leafs will be rested and waiting.
Green's pass to Morrison was outstanding.
His failed clearing attempt before the Canadiens' 3rd goal, on the other hand, was awful.
Posted by: tmac2yao | November 20, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse
Goaltending had nothing to do with this loss unless you're talking about Price's performance.
Neuvirth was good. Our defense was bad on every single Canadien goal.
Failed to close out on the shooter on the 1st goal and Poti needed to do more to prevent that deflection. If he's going to take the body, do it right. If not, take his stick.
All kinds of chaos on the 2nd goal. Poor spacing and coverage.
Green failed to clear on the 3rd goal then Sloan effectively provided a screen for the shooter who had way too much space to begin with.
Posted by: tmac2yao | November 20, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse
The Canadiens came out strong with their forecheck and dominated the first 10 minutes or so of the game.
Price was very good if not excellent.
When they got the lead, they just went into a shell and got some good fortune. We hit a couple of posts and had plenty of scoring opportunites. This game could've gone either way.

1. this team is not gonna win many games when they only score 2 goals. they will live and die by their offense... even saw Erskine of all people pinching in deep and giving up a two on one that the Canadiens should've scored on.
2. their PK continues to be their biggest problem, only 1 for 2 against a terrible PP unit. their 78% and 23 ranked PK going further in the wrong direction.
3. Carlson played a pretty good game... he didn't look out of place which is about all you can hope from a 19-year old rookie d-man playing his first NHL game.

My take is that Ovi was having an off night. I think BB kept switching up the lines looking for that spark--either with Ovi or with the other guys. Thought Neuvy looked pretty solid and he had a couple of athletic saves. Amazing that we had five Hershey guys on the ice tonight. Final thought-- Green was good tonight--the only Caps tonight who got a star. Perhaps all the posters who were so negative about him over the last two threads should reconsider their position. I believe constructive criticism--personally I disliked the personal attacks and ranting on the players by many of the posters. Also some of you need to get a sense of humor. Tominfl1 doesn't need me to be his Erskine tonight but I couldn't believe how many of you were insulted by his gentle mockery.
Posted by: Capsyoungguns | November 20, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse
I mean I believe in constructive criticism and not personal attacks. Someone or several someones in the recent threads referenced Green's haircut and his car--that qualifies as unhelpful criticism, indeed as personal attacks. Trade the SOB he has bad hair and loves his car more than the team (sarcasm).
