Tonight's lineup: Caps at Blue Jackets

Jose Theodore will start tonight at Nationwide Arena, but it appears that Blue Jackets Coach Claude Noel will turn to Mathieu Garon instead of Steve Mason, who shutout the Caps twice last season but has a suspected shoulder injury.

The rest of the visitors' lineup should look the way it did this morning:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Belanger-Fehr
Laing-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Corvo
Sloan-Poti

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

With a win tonight, and any kind of loss by the Sharks tomorrow, the Caps will clinch the team's first ever President's Trophy. So Alex and Co. have something to motivate them against a struggling and unfamiliar Jackets' squad.

I'll have more later.

WRT motivators: what about the fact that a win tonight would give them the most wins in franchise history (currently tied with 50)?

Posted by: aybee27 | April 3, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

GO CAPSSSSSS!!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

My prediction for tonight's game:

Caps - 5 Columbus - 3

Theodore lets in 2 softies, setting the stage for Varly to seize the playoff starting goalie.

ugh what's wrong with CSN?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else having issues with the feed? Center ice has it frozen with only the radio feed for sound.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 3, 2010 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Ok it is fixed for me now.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 3, 2010 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Wouldn't it be nice if Flash could settle in at C full time?

If he could win faceoffs and play solid D, I would DEFINITELY take these lines going into the playoffs!

But, ya gotta go wit watcha got!

SCORE OVIE! SCOOOOOOORE!

F'N COMCAST IS OUT AGAIN AS IM TYPING!

GO CAPS!!!!

that my friends, is a goal

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 3, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

I don't think this is a goal. They can't score a goal by pushing the goalie into the net. It also looks like he might have thrown it in.

you're dumb ref.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

CAPS CAPS CAPS!!!

Posted by: dc33 | April 3, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin has been nothing but a liability to start this game.

His first pass of the game was yet another risky cross-ice pass with no passing lane that got intercepted and taken the other way. Apparently, he and the coaches have no intention of changing that awful habit.

Then, he gets burned on the point on the PP, unable to either keep the puck in or read the situation and fall back on defense.

Horrible...

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Anytime after we score, I say BB double/triple shift Bradley and company for the sake of not giving the goal. Geez...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan1 | April 3, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Figures. We score on the 5-on-3 and then immediately give up a goal. GRRRRRR!

Really shouldn't complain, though--we're actually playing from in front for once. LET'S GO, CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 3, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if you guys/gals have noticed but we play this open, east-west style against the Western Conf or similar teams.
I am pretty sure Ovie is not having a brain cramp during those passes but rather was told to do so. Just my observation.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Cody Eakin is playing for the Bears tonight and it looks like it is second game with them. And I think that he scored a goal in his first Bears game. He looked very good last fall at KCI.

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 3, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

I can't imagine any coach would tell a player to pass the puck laterally across the ice through 2 or 3 opposing players when their is no passing lane.

Ovechkin has been doing it for years and it leads to odd-man rushes in transition going the other way.

My best guess is that it drives the coaches mad but they are hesitant to anything other than occasionally suggest to him to try to avoid those plays. They need to drill it out of him. Hold onto the puck or play it into the corner, not across the ice when there is no passing lane.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

bb needs to find out how to say "hey get your butt in gear going both ways" in Russian so he can whisper it to OV...8 has been least impressive forward in the first period...and not much better for the last several games

Posted by: Todgak | April 3, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

What amazes me about Ovechkin is that he has so much room for improvement despite being a 2-time MVP.

He has so far to go in terms of playing a team game and decision-making with and without the puck.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

well I'm glad its not just me that sees that ovie is playing like total CRAAAAP!his passes are off,his shots are off,he is just off.hope he gets it together before the playoffs.come on ovie, get ur butt in gear!GO CAPS!!!

We're playing horribly despite being up 3-1.

Theodore and a ton of luck has kept this from being at least 3-3.

watch what sets the play up. Richards is physical on the Rangers point man and knocks him down. By the time his teammate intercepts the pass and sends Richards out of the zone, the dman he had knocked down is still picking himself up off the ice which allows for the clean breakaway.

his defensive play in general is pretty bad mainly due to his passing. We saw Crosby make that pass to Semin for the critical goal in the last game but Crosby overall doesn't make the kind of bad passes Ovy does. He's surpassing Semin for loose play.

Posted by: gonchpup | April 3, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

And that was a tremendous defensive play by Laich earlier that prevented, at the minimum, a golden scoring chance.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

its only trashing if its not true. Thats the way I look at it anyway. No one's saying trade him. Just that his turnovers etc are getting a bit too much. For a player at his level he needs to be less reckless with that puck because he hangs his teammates out to dry.

we seem to play down to any team's level. Just doing barely enough to get by. Its going to be a rude awakening in round 1 if we get down in the series to an inferior team who is ready to fire on all cylinders.

Perhaps there should be a new rule in the NHL. Where a team who has already clinched a #1 conf seed only plays the games they WANT to?

best thing that could happen to them is to blow the lead. Then at least their mistakes don't get glossed over in a win. To lose a 2 goal lead to Columbus in the 3rd is ..examinable.

Everything pointed out about Ovi, is something I or someone else pointed out previously. Apparently it becomes more valid when the Caps are playing bad though.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

this game could easily be 4-3 Columbus right now. We've given up our share of quality chances, odd man rushes etc

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 3, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin did end up with a hat trick tonight...

3 horrible decisions on the PP that led to SHG opportunites.

On the last one, he steps up and swings wildly at a 50/50 bouncing puck and of course completely whiffs, taking himself out of the play as the point man.

Horrible... get it all out of you now, Ovechkin.

And the coach needs to give it to him.

Our defense wasn't even good in this game.

It was Theodore, luck and playing a struggling hockey team that got us the win.

Steckel's line was strong and Laich had a great game despite that horrible giveaway in front of our net toward the end.

Fleischmann was good, too, compared to his recent standards and I'm not even talking about his goal. He did the little things pretty well.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 3, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

And I don't buy the theory that Ovechkin isn't trying to win the individual awards.

I think it's quite the opposite.

He's trying too hard to make plays, offensively, and in the process, is playing even worse in other areas.

He's even more focused on the offensive end than usual which is resulting in more risky plays and even less defensive awareness.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

i guess of all the players who could be a little selfish, i don't mind it so much if Ovechkin acts that way right now. as long as he ramps up his overall gm in the playoffs. I want to see him like a wrecking ball out there when it counts. And I really hope we get to play either Boston, Philly, or the Rags. Boston and the Rangers play a very stifling game and thats a good test for our forwards. Philly is just a team that no matter what their situation is, they always present a tough matchup.

You do know that the Pens are struggling pretty mightily right now, right? As are the Blackhawks, Devils, and Sharks.

I want the Caps to come into the playoffs hot too, but it doesn't have to be this strict dichotomy.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Two main problems I saw tonight - first, the power play was horrible. I don't know what was with their passing, but way too many soft turnovers. Second, the forwards were not getting back to help the defense when there was an offensive zone turnover. However, the dmen played well for the most part, and Theo was outstanding. Ovie needs to stop trying so hard and just play - he should be letting Backstrom carry the puck in more.

Posted by: timmyv38 | April 3, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

well anybody can look at the schedule and see that the thrash won't make it... the last two games of the season philly vs. the blue shirts will decide the 8 seed

and the Rangers will probably beat'em

@richmondphil

You are absolutely right about Ovechkin always having these flaws and I was one of the people who criticized it for you.

That makes me a full-blown hypocrite because I've noticed the same things myself and have made similar complaints.

I guess I just have trouble at times that despite having some phenomenal attributes, Ovechkin still has miles to go as a complete hockey player.

Like I said earlier, I suppose a positive twist on it is that he's considered this good of a player without even appearing to have made a serious attempt to shore up his weaknesses.

The only question is if and when he'll try to take the next steps in his evolution as a complete forward.

I suppose another question is whether Boudreau is the right guy to guide him in that direction.

He needs his "Yzerman moment" or as Leonsis would say, a "reckoning."

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

err... "criticized you for it"

not sure how that typo occurred...

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 3, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

How fitting that Ovechkin finished with a team and game worst -2 rating.

He was horrible... really horrible in this game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

The thing about Ovechkin though, is that he plays the game like no one else. Yzerman was a great player before he was told to buckle-down as a two-way player, but he wasn't Ovechkin, that's for sure.

I've sort of learned to accept Ovi's "bad" with his "good". The good far outweighs the bad, fortunately for us. :)

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

I have no idea how these stats keepers do their thing.

As a team, we were credited with 1 giveaway and 0 takeaways.

I specifically remember a number of giveaways, including Laich's right at the end of the game.

I also specifically remember Steckel stripping a puck from a Blue Jacket at one of the blue lines.

You always hear about those stats guys being inconsistent and missing things and tonight had to be one of those cases.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 3, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

well if BB wants Ovi to be a complete hockey player and not just a goal scorer, I think he had better start using him in all situations of the game

Rick Nash was just about the most dangerous player on the ice when the Caps are on PP tonight... don't see why Ovi wouldn't be able to do the same things for the Caps if given the opportunity.

___________________
Breaking it down, the way I see it is that Ovi has far far above-average skill, size, speed and strength. He just doesn't have that far, far above-average hockey sense and vision as say...Sakic or Mario.

If we could transfer Backstrom's patience and decision-making onto Ovechkin's body....we'd have Superhockeyplayer.

Nash is a phenomenal hockey player. Made sure to have tickets to the CBJ game earlier this year just to see him play live.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

And Mike Green continues his strong overall play.

This really deserves plenty of attention.

He's playing some of the best hockey if his career over the last 5 games, getting it done in both zones.

If this somehow continues into the playoffs, it will have a huge effect on our chances.

The same could be said about Ovechkin if he promises to eliminate those risky, cross-ice passes and play with a little more effort and awareness, defensively. Unfortunately, I think he's probably at least a year or two away from making any real progress in these areas. We'll just have to hope those issues don't cost us too much until then or, at least, are outweighed by the good things he brings to the table.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

wow I mean Philly... i'm so tired. I'm guessing Varly will get the start on Monday and Theo on Tuesday against the Pens. If Varly plays well on Monday it's going to be a tough call for BB... but I think he goes with Theo come game 1 in the playoffs.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 3, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

To be honest though tmac, Ovi seems to considerably cut back on those dumb plays in the playoffs. And when he does do them, he hustles his butt off to make up for it. It would help if he would just try not to make them though. On the flip side, when those passes do connect, it's usually hitting a wide-open trailing forward ready to whip one top-shelf. Represents the "high risk, high reward" style of BB's system quite well.

Green's played great. I haven't even noticed him much, which is a very good thing for defenseman to me.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:18 PM | Report abuse

And although I don't necessarily think physical play = better play, it's no secret I enjoy the physical aspects of the game. I think that Green's better play can be directly related to how much he has stepped up his physical presence. Not necessarily hitting, but he certainly is not afraid to get chippy with you in the corner or along the boards now. Quite a remarkable change from his game last year.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:21 PM | Report abuse

I'd go with Varly should there be a rematch against the Rangers in the first round... against every other team I'd probably start Theo unless Varly really lights it up in his next starts

rachel,
Rangers we can beat, Philly beat us last season recall? Brads made Lundquisvt look like a minor league call-up.
Out of the current top 8, we can definitely beat Ottawa, Buffalo, and Boston. Not that any playoff series is easy but the others would be infinitely tougher.

I don't really care who's in net. Put whoever is playing better. When/if he messes up, put the other one in.

It's not like we a choice between Miller and Toskala here.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Any team had won the stanley cup with 2 goaltenders - Boudreau had to name Theo for his goaler for the playoffs and give to him all the games for finish the season.

Posted by: frank56 | April 3, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse

the fact that he has NOT named Theo the starter YET should give you an idea... BB is the one who pulled Theo after one game last year and put a 20-year old rookie in the playoffs.

I think when Varly is right, BB has more confidence in him than Theo

I'm having a little trouble understanding that last one there, but I'll let it slide. It's Saturday night. :)

Posted by: richmondphil | April 3, 2010 10:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm still undecided if Ovi is just trying to "rest" for the POs or if he's trying to hard. But as someone said above and what BB said in his postgame interview, if Ovi would start paying more attention to playing better defensively, then the points would come.
