Tonight's lineup: Caps at Blues

Jose Theodore will start in goal at Scottrade Center tonight as the Caps aim to end a two-game losing streak and pick up their first victory here in eight contests. Chris Mason, meantime, will get the nod for the Blues, who sit in 12th place in the Western Conference.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Steckel-Fehr
Laing-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Carlson
Alzner-Pothier

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

Check back later for postgame wrap.

@tominFla & fromtheBeginning (from previous thread)

Enjoyed the posts (on Aristotle).

BTW, it has been a long time since I've seen dinosaurs outside my window.

I guess that's what global warming (or global cooling) has done for us all.

Anyone see Don Cherry's jacket on the HNIC intermission?

Now you know what they wear in the Doofus Brigade.

Watch this darn basketball game go to OT.

BTW, Bears are down to the Baby Pens 3-0 early in the second period. Just started streaming the audio, so I don't know who's in goal for Hershey or any other details. Sorry.

LET'S GO, CAPS!!!

Although it seems Al Koken is doing the play-by play of the VCU-JMU game, apparently CSN doesn't realize that the ratings for the Caps/Blues game are where the money is.

To speed up the end of basketball games, when the trailing team intentionally fouls the leading team inside the final two minutes, call it an intentional foul. How does a 40 minute basketball game take nearly as long as a 60 minute hockey game, when they have to resurface the ice twice?! :P

But I guess since they switched over to the Caps game, they can do whatever they want in the basketball game now, for all I care. ;)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 13, 2010 8:11 PM | Report abuse

What! Where is the game? Isn't on Comcast? Why are they showing basketball? This is a crisis.

Holtby's in goal for the Bears, but it sounds like his teammates aren't giving him much help. Also, with Alzner and Carlson with the Caps, Bourque did not make it back in time to play, Giroux out sick, and Amadio hurt early in the first...the Bears are playing somewhat short-handed talent-wise.

You can already tell how this gonna go. Laing got a double minor?! WTF?!

Posted by: jmurray019 | February 13, 2010 8:26 PM | Report abuse

They only have the instigator up on NHL.com. What was Laing's other penalty? Or is the Blues feed just a bunch of idiots?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 13, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Laing's other penalty was apparently for unsportsmanlike... I'm betting it was a "well, we didn't see the hit, so we have to make up for the 5 major for interference." I hate referees.

Posted by: jmurray019 | February 13, 2010 8:28 PM

I get this feeling that Laing wasn't looking for a fight. Maybe a little grappling and roughing, but Laing's not exactly one to drop the gloves. Janssen then jumped him before he had a chance to do anything. Of course, I'd like to see a replay to confirm all of this.

Man they're working harder than us right now... Oh great, they scored.

Before anyone asks, the Blues were serving a major and minor at the same time. A major can't be reduced due to goal being scored, so the minor was put to an end, which is why the Caps didn't get another minute of PP time.

Posted by: tominfl1 | February 13, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

That's one of those times when having a major penalty against them screws us. Cost us more than a minute of PP time because the minor is the one that comes off the board - not the major. If the other was a minor, it'd come off the board and we'd still have a PP.

We better watch ourselves tonight. It's clear the refs are going to start calling all the interference penalties. Move your feet!

Posted by: Raber | February 13, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

lol tom, you beat me to it.

Posted by: Raber | February 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

NOW I think I understand why we're getting screwed on calls. I'm pretty sure that's McCreary reffing.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

so the net total gain from that BS hit was a 1 minute man advantage???

Posted by: Alisterio | February 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

How can a short-handed team give up a break-away?

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 13, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Wow we actually PK'd. Oh, right, it's the Blues.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 13, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Too many penalties called on both teams. At some point, just let the player play.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 13, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

At the intermission on NHL network, Don Cherry said "the best player in hockey..." talking about Crosby - probably the only announcer/media guy in the world who would say it.

Posted by: Raber | February 13, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Just checked NHL.com and I'm wrong about McCreary. It's gonna be a long night, though, if the refs keep calling the game so closely.

Thank God Theo is stopping the breakaways. Where the hell is the D?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 13, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I am watching Blues telecast. They said Jansson got 5 for interference (should have been five for elbowing to head) and Laing got a double-minor. This is what's wrong with the instigator rule. Jansson should've gotten 5+5 and Laing 5 only. The instigator rule should be abolished; but, if you must keep it, any player deemed to have committed a five minute major due to injuring should be instigated as payback "free of charge." It's just like you can't shoot people in your driveway, but you can shoot them (in Floida, it's the "Castle Doctrine") if they break into and you confront them in your house.

The Blues announcers also said the refs have been instructed to crack down on interference penalties.

Posted by: tominfl1 | February 13, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Why can't they just let us chat by ourselves? We don't need a host.. but then we'd be cursing at each other. Nevermind. Haha!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 13, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

For a change, the Caps are not down at first intermission, even though they did give up the first goal.

I'm beginning to wonder if on 4 on 4's, especially at the end of our 4 on 4's is we should maybe have our most defensive minded forwards and d-men on the ice. Treat it like a PK.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 13, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

BTW, Blues announcers said they had six interference penalties in the game they played last night. At one point the whistle blew and the announcer said, "And he'll head for, what else, interference."

Posted by: tominfl1 | February 13, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: joek443 | February 13, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Milbury is going senile. On HNC they were asking about Team Canada and Milbury starts talking about Ovie and Cindy....and they he says "Kovalchuk can really say something about who's tournament this is". What? The question was Healy's about Ovi making a statement, not Kovalchuk

19 mins because he stood up for his injured teammate. Something is wrong with this sport.

4) Semin is still pretty much on fire. Would not be a surprise if he scored another tonight.

And our goal tending has not been nearly as sharp in these last few games as it was in the first 10 games of the streak.

I asked this question before, but I put it in the wrong post. What do you think will happen by the trade deadline. I find it hard to believe that McPhee will not get a good D man. Wasn't this the reason--freeing the cap-- they wanted to get rid of Nyls? Has anybody heard any reliable rumors. Though I have to say. I don't believe there were any rumors about our aquisition of Huet, Knuble, Chimera etc. before we acquired them. Were there?

Yeah but again we have to hope we score 4 or 5 to win. They need to have some good practice time. PK is really bad, that scares me more than the 5v5 defense. PK is tied for 6 from the bottom of the league.

Thanks elicia.

Speaking of elbows, why didn't Ruutu get a penalty for his one on Green in the Sens game? I wasn't at a computer during the game....just wondering.

I can see your point on Hartnell. he is one of those guys you hate but if he was on your team you would like him. stirs things up for sure.

@tominfl1

Hope your Item 4 comes true.

I think your Item 3 is appropriate. I think it's appropriate for Brooksie to get the A.

I would say the two players most symbolic of the Caps, outside of Ovi, are ...... (drum roll please) .... Semin and Laich.

I believe the NHL should begin awarding a new trophy each year, this one being for the player who produces the best scoring from two feet in front of the net.

This award will be henceforth known as the Mike Knuble Trophy.

And the likely winner of the Mike Knuble Trophy this year will be Mike Knuble.

I love guys who stir things up. Hartnell...just sucks. I hate him so much. He has that face that you just want to punch for no reason at all. He also doesn't like to play defense for a pest.

Different kind of pest I guess. Last 4-5 years he has had 20-30 goals. I think it is the hair that makes me want to punch him the post. The curls remind me to much of Jagr perhaps.

While the Caps have benefited some from the shootout, I've never been a fan of the concept. I would much rather see games end in a 5-minute overtime.

How about this for a change? Award 3 pts for a regulation win, 2 pts for an OT win, and 1 pt for a tie. That would sure make things interesting during a playoff race, wouldn't it?

It's hard to complain about that effort after the recent stretch of defensive duds.

Theo was great and got unlucky on that SO goal.

Our defense was better.

Fleischmann with another very poor game.

Ovechkin with another subpar game to go with the one the other day (can't recall if it was against Mon or Ott).

Not a good way to go into the break but they did play better than the previous 3 games. At least we got a point but hate the three game losing streak. UGH not a good feeling. Both goalies were awesome but sucks that Theo was the unlucky one.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 13, 2010 11:02 PM | Report abuse

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
This olympic break couldn't have come at a better time as the Caps were going into somewhat of a funk. Too much standing around again at times in the D-zone tonight. Schultz was awful on that first goal.

A better effort overall. However, the officiating was horrible both ways. I mean the ticky tackiest of calls. God forbid if you even breathed on a player tonight. It's amazing the crap that called vs the obvious stuff that wasn't called.

Tough break for Theo in the shootout as that puck would not have gone in. He played solid tonight. None of the goals were his fault.

Brainfart by Carlson on the one goal. Plus this team has GOT TO DO BETTER getting the puck out of its zone tonight. At times the Blues owned the play. Again they need to get back to getting ahead of teams - not playing catchup every game.

Again the break couldn't come at a better time.

Best of luck to all the Caps Olympians. Play safe and stay healthy.

I'll take the point.

Two weeks of great hockey in Vancouver then it's off to resume the season in Buffalo on March 3rd with perhaps some new guys in a Caps uniform? We shall see.

Flash's mind is somewhere else. He seems to have checked out already. Don't know what the deal is. Maybe Ovechkin has as well. He had a really bad turnover in OT and they almost scored. Carlson didn't have a great game, allowed Oshie (can't remember if it was him?) to blow right past him on that two on one and they scored. Break is happily welcomed, well except for our 5 guys. (Except Varly probably won't play.)

Another fanatastic game for Semin and Knubs. Theodore got hung out to dry like Holtby against the baby pens. The break comes at a good time to stop this current streak/trend. Players need to take a good look in the mirror and find some grit that has been absent for the last several games.

is there a team that gets beat up more than the Caps? In fact, can anyone remember the last time a capitals player actually won a fight? We either don't fight anymore or when one of our heart and soul guys (coming off a broken jaw) tries to stick up for a teammate they get their butts kicked. Schultz and Gordo were only too happy that Laing jumped in for Brads. It gets old watching this team always come out on the losing end of a fight in the rare occasions they actually do fight. Steckel towers over Zenon Konopka and he got his butt waxed.

Just took a look at Theo's overall save percentage this season, and for the last few games before tonight's. I had to wince. Those numbers don't really represent how well I think he's been playing, and the quality of saves he's made when left essentially alone in front of the net. How many breakaways did he stop tonight? Like hersheykid says, the goalies have really been left to twist in the wind.

Posted by: SuzieInMD | February 13, 2010 11:54 PM | Report abuse

two outta those 3 breakaways, Theo really didn't have to do much because the shooter only could go backhand... you saw the shootout, just because there's a breakaway, doesn't mean the goalie is okay to let it in...

I'm more worried about point-blank chances in front of the net than breakaways.

you're what you're record and numbers say you are... Theo will give up about 3 goals/game and stop about 90 percent of the shots because that's been his record after about a year and 3/4 with the Caps.

no more, no less

Posted by: joek443 | February 14, 2010 12:14 AM | Report abuse

I know it wasn't a win, but I am just glad that the Caps head into break on this note, rather than on a game such as the ones they lost to Ottawa or Montreal. They were definitely not playing their best, but I thought they were heading in the right direction. I look at it as Montreal was the game that snapped our streak, Sens was a let down game (almost inevitable)...This game, the Caps were trying to right some of their wrongs, wether successful or not, they looked better than in the previous slew of games. Hey, at least in our three game losing streak, we collect 2 points. I am impressed how this team never seems to get more than 1 or 2 regulation losses in a row.

Hoping Bradley gets enough rest this break, he looked extremely woozy. And hoping the rest of the team is able to rest and relax a little, and come back healthy and hungry!

Also, to the Caps going to the Olympics, please really take it to team Canada!

Go Caps!

How many wide open nets has Flash had this season where he's muffed shots?

I'm going to say a good 5 to 10 with a number of them coming on the PP.

I think he's a very talented player but if he hasn't eliminated the softness and timidity in his game at this point, when will he?

I've been continually pulling for the guy to break through. I'm not just talking about statistics. There's a lot more to being a good NHL hockey player than putting up points.

I think he gets stage fright or something on top of being soft along the boards on the puck and defensively, in general. I can't find any other explanation. He's too skilled to be making some of the bad plays and mistakes he makes.

Schultz sucks!!! Unskilled, slow, can't handle the puck and worst of all.....soft. He makes so many turnovers it's unreal and is the main culprit in this 3-game losing streak.

@The_Stanley_Caps

I'm glad the Caps came away with 2 points for the week. But losing is still very annoying. And we don't get Bettman points in the playoffs. Overtime losses in the playoffs are still losses and count just the same.

But at least there are no shootouts in the playoffs.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 14, 2010 12:53 AM | Report abuse

@pokerface1208

If the Saints can win the Superbowl, it's time for another long time downtrodden team to win the Stanley Cup.

Last year was the year of my hated teams being World Champions; i.e. Penguins and NY Yankees. While I'm not a Steelers hater per se, they do represent one of my least favorite sports cities and they beat my 2nd favorite team; i.e. Arizona.

So why can't this year be the year that the downtrodden finally win something. Saints and then Caps.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 14, 2010 1:00 AM | Report abuse

I know losses are annoying....but they do happen, and thank goodness not as often for the Caps this season. Why are the Caps in such great position in their division/conference? Even though the Caps have gone through some amazing stretches (not just the 14 gamer here)where they are playing on top of their games, and all seems right in the world, when they do go through some shaky stretches, they still manage to rack out some points.

I honestly feel that a lot of the play of late is just the team coming back to earth somewhat. They were playing out of their minds for a good 11 games, and then, based on their pure talent, they continued to win even when some of their play dropped.

I would imagine playing at the level they were playing during their streak does take a lot out of you. Whether the players admit to it or not, I think coming down from that streak, and seeing a huge break looming in the near future, well, its just human nature to sort of take the edge of a little, maybe even coast a bit into break. They have played an extremely tough/condensed schedule lately, and I really think the break will do them good.

Last year I felt the team got sort of bored and complacent in their last month and a half heading into the playoffs, I think having this break in the schedule (combined with the fact that this team seems to play with a more determined attitude this year) will really help them to regroup and get ready for the playoffs. (Not to mention, most of the team will get a good weeks worth of practice before the schedule resumes!).

After winning 14 straight, the team is 0-1-2. That really is not as bad as it could have been!

Sorry for the rambling.
Go Caps!

Posted by: The_Stanley_Caps | February 14, 2010 1:09 AM | Report abuse

On the Caps schedule in Jan and Feb, they played 22 games in 44 days. (Yes, I counted it up.) This is basically the equivalent of playing 3 playoff series back to back, as far as the frequency of games is concerned.

I analyzed the caliber of opponent during the winning streak and most of the teams were the equivalent of a first round playoff opponent. They were teams that were just barely in the playoff picture or barely out of it, as far as points in the standings were concerned. And we had some good teams in there too, i.e. 2 games vs Pittsburgh and a game against Phoenix, and last year's SC runner up, whose having an off year.

So that was one tough schedule. So, they had a let down, between the hype and the fact they've had no practice and Olympics coming up.

In case anyone's interested, Alex Semin now has:

2 more points than Ilya Kovalchuk (and is behind him by only 2 goals)

2 goals and 4 points ahead of Zach Parise. And he has just moved ahead of Parise in Plus/Minus. Semin is +25. Parise is +24. (And everyone knows that Parise is one of the best two way forwards in the league.)

1 goal and 1 point behind Dany Heatley of San Jose.

Schultz has had some bad moments in recent games but he has definitely added a little intensity to his game this season. I haven't compared his stats to last season but it's pretty obvious he's hitting more and blocking more shots.

I'm not opposed at all to seeing Schultz get traded but I'm not nearly as horrified at the possibility of him being here in the future as I was at times in past seasons. He still looks like he should be no higher than in the 2nd pairing though, even on a team that is average-at-best, defensively.

He should never be on the ice in 4-on-4 situations unless it's the last resort. I put together a long post about that after the Montreal game. I believe he was standing right in front of the net tonight during the Blues' 4-on-4 goal, completely oblivious of the guy behind him and slow to react when he did see him there, even though it was too late.

In addition to slow straight away speed, he has slow reaction time and can't change directions effectively. Steckel and Poti are in the same boat.

We've had a lousy penalty kill for the past few seasons and Schultz, Steckel and Poti have been mainstays on those units. I'm not saying it's all on them but they may very well be part of the problem.

I look at good penalty killing teams and see more players that are quick and can put pressure on the puck, change directions quickly and cover ground. I think the Caps are using too many players that are tall and slow with the thought that their reach and length are advantages. While that is true to an extent, I think we need more speed and skill on our penalty killing units.

I understand that Steckel's faceoff skills are highly valuable but what's the use if he can't effectively put pressure on the points or clear pucks. He's next to zero threat to score shorthanded to boot, not that that's a necessity.

@tramellcanady

Are you a troll complaining about Schultz or was your last post a parody of all the posts that have complained about Schultz in the past.

@Capsfan75--I like how you are putting it into perspective.

Do the Caps need to improve their play? Sure, but every team has areas that needs to improve. Would I rather have seen the Caps win their last couple of games, or play tighter defense? Of course. But I still think they are an amazing team, and even more so when they are on their game plan. I personally think they were heading in the right direction tonight, and look for better things to come after the break (maybe a few tweaks here and there, and a good week of practice to boot!)

@The_Stanley_Caps

As much as I try to put things in perspective, I'll admit I was still angry about losing tonight (along with the previous losses).

Yes, Schultz makes mistakes. And Semin supposedly is not good on defense. Yet here both of these guys are among the league leaders in Plus/Minus this year (and were two of our better Plus/Minus players last year.)

Just think what kind of Plus/Minus statistics they'd be racking up if they actually got their acts together on the defensive front. Giving Ovi a run for the money in Plus/Minus?

In other words, they must be doing something right on the defensive front. It's not like they've merely been lucky enough to be on the "right" line or D pairing.

Did anyone else notice Schultz was on the ice for the entire 5-on-3 penalty kill? The stat sheet on nhl.com has Gordon, Laich, Green listed but it was clearly Schultz. And then when Gordon and Laich stepped off the ice after they cleared the puck, Schultz stayed out there. I remember thinking, dude, what is he doing, that's a 2 minute shift! Anyways, I'm just saying give the guy some credit. Yeah the goal in the first period was ugly but he redeemed himself in the end.
