Tonight's Lineup: Caps at Bruins

When the Caps hit the ice here at TD Banknorth Garden moments ago, here's how they were lined up:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Laich-Morrison-Knuble
Laing-Steckel-Clark
Kane-Gordon-Bradley

Note that Quintin Laing had to be bumped up to the third line to replace Caps' cap casualty Chris Bourque, who was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh yesterday. Boyd Kane, meantime, has replaced Laing on the fourth line. Kane, by the way, has appeared in only 28 NHL games -- only one with Philly last year -- so I don't expect to see him much tonight.

The D-pairings look like this:

Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Erskine-Pothier

More in a bit.

Any clue as to who is starting in Goal?

Posted by: mattbuckley80 | October 1, 2009 11:43 AM | Report abuse

i think corey reported that theo will be in net. but still 8 hours till game time, plenty of time for BB to change his mind.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | October 1, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

Any clue as to where/when/if Nylander is gone soon?

Posted by: jmurray019 | October 1, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

Yashin is no longer with Locomotive. He is now with CSKA St. Petersburg, coached by Barry Smith.

Posted by: CodePoetry | October 1, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

I believe Theodore is in goal. And, if that tweet was to be believed, Tarik and Corey are watching a different skate. ALSO, I'm not sure those are my favorite line combos. Oh well.

Posted by: SmallZ827 | October 1, 2009 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Someone please tell me that Vs. scrapped that ridiculous rule about Tuesday exclusivity. I don't want to watch the Wild vs the Blue Jackets if the Caps are on!

Posted by: jmurray019 | October 1, 2009 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Corey's tweet is accurate....Knuble did not skate but will play tonight.

And So It Begins...

FEAR THE WEAGLE!!!

Posted by: Rhino40 | October 1, 2009 11:51 AM | Report abuse

So the scratches are Nylander, Sarge, and Sloan?

@Jschon
Your post in the last thread was so apropos (and funny too). Nice to see you posting here after a long absence.

Posted by: 1hockeymom | October 1, 2009 11:51 AM | Report abuse

Maybe I'm crazy, but assuming the same scratches I'd have:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark
Semin-Morrison-Knuble
Laich-Steckel-Bradley
Kane-Gordon-Laing

I like the D, I think. Although, with all the fuss about Sloan being the best in camp you think he'd be on there.

Posted by: SmallZ827 | October 1, 2009 11:54 AM | Report abuse

Wow, I'd expect Knuble on the first line to give us some grind across both lines. Laich and Knuble on one line seems strange but let's give it a whirl...

Can't wait.

Posted by: saintex | October 1, 2009 11:55 AM | Report abuse

The Schultz bashers will be so disappointed, what will they have to complain about all day tomorrow??!!

Posted by: PhilR | October 1, 2009 11:59 AM | Report abuse

@saintex - I agree, that's an odd pairing, since both are guys who go to the net, and it would be more helpful to have them on separate lines. I thought we got Knuble with the intention of playing him on Ovie's line, too. But even if this is how they start out, I'm sure BB will mix it up if it's not working.

Posted by: hillg | October 1, 2009 12:00 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao (from previous thread) - and there are men who watch Indycar racing strictly because they think Danica Patrick is hot, too.

It's about that silly that we're having this discussion. Your outlook on female fans is both outdated and mysoginistic, and furthermore, degrading to the women I know (myself included) who are serious fans of the sport of hockey.

Are there puck bunnies? Yes, but I do not list them in the same sentence as female fans of the sport of hockey. I believe that the puck bunny to serious female fan ratio in hockey is about the same as the ratio of men who watch Indycar because of Danica Patrick's physique and appearance to those who watch Indycar because hey, cool fast racing.

Posted by: irockthered | October 1, 2009 12:00 PM | Report abuse

@saintex - And when do Boudreau's line groupings last longer than the first frame? Just because this is how they practiced doesn't mean this is how they will line up for the actual game. Boudreau is in the business of hiding what his actual lines are until those lines hit the ice. I wouldn't put much stock in how the players were lined up to practice this morning, not as far as how they will line up tonight for real is concerned. :-)

Posted by: irockthered | October 1, 2009 12:01 PM | Report abuse

IRTR, how could ANY man possibly find Danica Patrick attractive??!! Now if we are talking tennis and Maria Sharapova, yeah ok, I'm a tennis fan just to watch her but Danica Patrick.....not so much!

Posted by: PhilR | October 1, 2009 12:04 PM | Report abuse

@irockthered - at this point I think he's purposely repeating this sexist nonsense to provoke a reaction. In fact, that was probably his goal all along. Let's not reward that behavior, but rather allow the silliness to speak for itself. Focus on tonight! 7 hours to go...

Posted by: hillg | October 1, 2009 12:05 PM | Report abuse

We all know that BB love to change lines between periods...even shift..so i wouldn't be surprise to see Knuble and Semin switch up.

Posted by: ttn703 | October 1, 2009 12:05 PM | Report abuse

No, no, no... my intent was not to upset anybody.

Let's just leave it at this: We all agree that puckbunnies suck.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 1, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

IRTR and Hillg--Yes, his argument is hogwash, I would say there are very few puck bunnies out there. Most women I have met, including my wife, who enjoy hockey are extremely knowledgeable and love the game....period.

Posted by: PhilR | October 1, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Never been crazy about the Semin, Ovie, Backstrom combo.

When Fehr and Flash are back, I think it would be interesting to REALLY try spreading the scoring out....

Ovie - Morrison - Knuble
Flash - Backstrom - Fehr
Laich - Steckel - Semin

Yes, it's radical but we have 3 guys who can generate offense on their own, so why not let them share the wealth and get some of their teammates going?

Posted by: chombie13 | October 1, 2009 12:11 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao - I can agree with that, and I won't say "in more ways than one."

*snicker*

Kane is good for a goal and a assist....mark it down...

Posted by: SA-Town | October 1, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

@PhilR - If men don't find Danica Patrick attractive, then why is she in so many GoDaddy.com (and other) ads with a blatant, flagrant overtone of "sex-sex-sex?" ;-)

Posted by: irockthered | October 1, 2009 12:14 PM | Report abuse

I predict that no one will score against Schultz. He'll be even on the +/-. He won't trip over the blue line, or the defensive zone face off circle.

He'll be awesome!

Posted by: Greg S. | October 1, 2009 12:14 PM | Report abuse

Now that that's settled... LET'S GO CAPS!!

Posted by: hillg | October 1, 2009 12:14 PM | Report abuse

I agree that Laich and Knuble together is a little unexpected, but could have a really nice effect -- if they're dealt clean passes they could create a lot of dangerous situations.

Also, I know Kane has big shoes to fill after we all got so excited for Bourque, but he's a great kind of 4th line player. All his minor league stats are very consistent across the board -- solid, acceptable numbers of goals, assists, and PIM. I hope he gets a chance to play more once he's settled in and has done some practicing.

Posted by: nicko | October 1, 2009 12:15 PM | Report abuse

If I'm watching a sport strictly for the women, it's beach volleyball, then tennis. Maybe tennis first- I dunno.

Anyone know what the opening song(s) will be at Verizon this year? I dont remember what (if any) they played for the pre-season.

Posted by: Fro_ | October 1, 2009 12:16 PM | Report abuse

@Fro_ - Their opening song for pre-season was The Offspring - "Rise and Fall". It's a catchy tune, but the lead singer sounds like he's singing around a mouthful of marbles. :-p It took me over an hour to find the lyrics online!

Posted by: irockthered | October 1, 2009 12:22 PM | Report abuse

Those godaddy.com commercials are more annoying than those Progressive commercials.

Anyways, Corey tweeted that there is some indication that Varlamov might be in net tonight.

Posted by: richmondphil | October 1, 2009 12:22 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of line combos, I'm more interested to see what the PP line looks like (unless we get McCreary). Anyway, you'd think Ovie and Green would be on point; Semin at the post on Ovechkin's (left) side; Backstrom on the other post/behind the net and Knuble parked in front of the net.

Posted by: tominfl1 | October 1, 2009 12:23 PM | Report abuse

Why is Boyd Kane playing on the 4th line and not Giroux or Aucion? also so pissed that Bourque is gone WTF.

Posted by: redmatt | October 1, 2009 12:24 PM

Can you say "Salary Cap?"

Posted by: Greg S. | October 1, 2009 12:26 PM | Report abuse

@redmatt - Boyd Kane is up because he has the lowest salary in the Bears' organization, and we needed the salary space. We are RIGHT against the cap, because neither Fleischmann nor Fehr will be out long enough to go on the LTIR list, and so their salaries still count against us, even though they can't play.

This is also why Bourque is no longer a Cap. That horse, however, got beaten to a pulp yesterday, and I'm not saying anyhing more about it other than "that's the business of hockey."

LET'S GO, CAPS!!!

Posted by: irockthered | October 1, 2009 12:26 PM | Report abuse

I still can't believe we're playing an AHL'r over Nylander. If we want the best players available out there Nyls is in. We are paying him anyway might as well play him.

Posted by: minusculeb | October 1, 2009 12:31 PM | Report abuse

@irockthered- lol 'mouthful of marbles' is the exact expression my brother in-law always uses to describe the singing of Tim Armstrong from Rancid.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | October 1, 2009 12:34 PM | Report abuse

Bought NHL Centre Ice yesterday so I'm all ready to go for the season. Should be a good game tonight. Surprised that Semin's on the top line. Not that it isn't an amazing line but with Knuble going to the net on the 1st line, and with Semin and Morrison on the 2nd, that would be two really difficult lines to defend. Morrison, Knuble, Laich is an alright line but there's a pretty significant drop-off between the 1st and 2nd with these lines.

Posted by: Stu_c | October 1, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

@minusculeb

We aren't playing an "AHL'r" over Nylander. Neither Backstrom, Morrison, Steckel, nor Gordon is an "AHL'r".

Posted by: SmallZ827 | October 1, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Agreed Richmondphil, I hate those GoDaddy ads.....Knuble will pot a goal tonight to get his stint off with the Caps the right way! Go Caps!!

Posted by: PhilR | October 1, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

What!! He is not playing Nylander? I thought he said he would have news by Tues. or Wed. and that, if nothing could be worked out, Nyls would be in the line up. I have to believe that some deal is in the final stages of negotiation or the whole organization would look incompetent (I mean on the management of the Nylander -- "no movement clause").

Posted by: caraveli | October 1, 2009 12:38 PM | Report abuse

why can't we just put Nylander on the LTIR?!

Posted by: sargeantmofo | October 1, 2009 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Any updates on those rumors about Nylander?

Posted by: hillg | October 1, 2009 12:39 PM | Report abuse

umm, i dont know about these lines

Posted by: doughless | October 1, 2009 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Regarding this latest Nylander rumor, I get the sense we are in for yet more disappointment in a long series of Nylander-related disappointments.

This team could really use that extra cap space therefore I expect this to be too good to be true.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 1, 2009 12:40 PM | Report abuse

The salary cap swings it's head people....

Dont try to understand...just deal with it...

Fehr will be back soon.

Posted by: saintex | October 1, 2009 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Assuming this rumor is legit, does anybody think that McPhee possibly expected this to get done sooner and therefore not to have the need to expose Bourque to waivers (or anybody else, for that matter) .

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 1, 2009 12:45 PM | Report abuse

@SmallZ827
Nyls can play wing instead of Kane. He's done it before I just cant remember left or right or exactly when but we did play him there instead of center last year.

Posted by: minusculeb | October 1, 2009 12:50 PM | Report abuse

My thoughts so far...

Lines will change but maybe putting Ovie and Semin on the same line will create more chances since Chara cannot cover both sides of the ice.

Danica Patrick is hot but there would have to be an in car camera of her driving naked for me to watch cars drive in big circles (Indy & Nascar = not a sport).

I really don't have an issue with puck bunnies but I do think that the majority of the women who come to the games are true fans. And any puck bunny who would like to learn more about hockey come to section 407 and I would be happy to teach you all you need to know.

Greg S. I totally agree on Schultz. He will make so few mistakes that no one will notice him almost as if he's not even there.

I doubt the pre-season entry song and video will be what we get for the regular season. If I remember correctly they jus shot that video a couple weeks ago.

Boyd Kane is up over Giroux because (even though he and Giroux have the same salary of 500K) Giroux would have to clear re-entry waivers and another team could get him at 1/2 the cap hit.

I can't wait for tonight. LETS GO CAPS!!!!

Posted by: pkendrick | October 1, 2009 12:51 PM | Report abuse

I only went to one preseason game, and I'm not sure but I think the opening video was just a series of clips from last year, nothing original, so I expect something different for Saturday night.

Posted by: hillg | October 1, 2009 12:53 PM | Report abuse

The idea of making Chara play with a line of Ovi and Semin is solid - in my very amateur hockey mind. Those two could really open up the ice and force his partner (Wideman?) to hold Semin in check. Might be cool.

I'm am so ready for this. And Saturday night? With a banner? Yes, baby.

Posted by: saintex | October 1, 2009 12:54 PM | Report abuse

Nyls in not playing because he can get injured. It would be a lot harder to trade an injured player.

Posted by: CodePoetry | October 1, 2009 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Bad management to blame for loosing Borque. We didn't get anything for him either - nothing, rein, didly-squat.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 1, 2009 1:00 PM | Report abuse

To back up the other females on this board, I watch hockey (and other sports) because of reason [B].

The teams I like rarely change over the years. An attractive player is not going to change my loyalty if he switches teams, nor will I find a replacement on the team I follow. Females also take in, process, and discuss more information, thus we can talk stats, trades, skills, charitable work, adorableness, and haircuts - Greenie, you still look like a fluffy duckling; Varly, you have a borderline mullet. The frivolity may add to our enjoyment of the game and its players, but it doesn't make our love for the game less valid.

I didn't even know hockey players could be attractive - all those broken noses, missing teeth, scars, bulky pads. My first reaction when I saw players out of their gear wasn't, "Wow, some of them are hot!" but, "Huh, they're normal-sized."

I would agree with other posters that most women watch a sport 1) because they love it, or 2) their SO loves it. Groupies are a MINORITY!

As for male puckbunnies, you'll have to ask Crosby about that.

Posted by: pstenigma | October 1, 2009 1:02 PM | Report abuse

what's this rumor that people keep mentioning but aren't disclosing?

Posted by: sargeantmofo | October 1, 2009 1:02 PM | Report abuse

@minusculeb - BB addressed that yesterday about Nyls. He said that we needed a 4th line winger and that when they tried that with Nyls last year it didn't work.

Posted by: pkendrick | October 1, 2009 1:08 PM | Report abuse

No Schultz, No Victory.

Mark my words.

Jeff

P.S. Soooooo glad it's NHL time again!

Posted by: ccCapsfan | October 1, 2009 1:25 PM | Report abuse

does the center ice package guarantee the caps game tonight...or would it be blacked out due to versus having exclusive rights???

8, 28, & 19 together....why BB? Why? Once again, nothing with the players, i just don't want to see a quote after the game saying that line was playing "too cute". Anyway, tonight's the night fellas....Lets do this! GO CAPS!

I find it interesting that BB thinks Schultz is fantastic but doesn't put him in the lineup tonight.

I also find it odd that Knuble would be on the second line. Not sure having OV and Semin together will work that well for the long haul. I think they're good in spurts. Whatever. Just excited to see some hockey tonight. Looking forward to it.

=============================================

I agree I am also weary of the "too cute" excuse. Hopefully they have worked out that issue and BB is confident rather than delusional, no offense to the guys :) I would hate to think he would take a gamble on opening night.

With that said....LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: AmyS1 | October 1, 2009 1:53 PM | Report abuse

So, Sloan was the "best defender in camp," and he's not playing tonight. Ugh.

The top two lines are going to have to get it done. Clark has some offensive presence on the third line, but playing with Laing & Steckel, I don't see how that's going to work out. Fourth line is mostly what you'd think, but with Kane in.

The one positive here is Laich playing with Knuble & Morrison. That could really help him be even more productive and find some space.

I hope the game and the season go well. It's just a bit hard to get too thrilled when I see the same defense as last year. Hopefully, another year under their belt will see them mature and perform better.

Given the cap situation, there's really no other choice.

@ writered21: Should we just give up on the season right now? From what you've written, it'd be hard to be excited about anything, much less life in general. Dude, cheer up. Have a drink or something before the next time you post. You're sucking the energy right out of the air!

C'mon, Caps! Fear the Weagle!!!

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | October 1, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Without Flash and Fehr (and Bourque and Nylander of course) this group of forwards looks pretty thin. Plus we only have one top 3 defenseman. Not a Cup winner.
