Tonight's lineup: Caps at Canadiens

Semyon Varlamov will indeed get his first start of the playoffs tonight at Centre Bell and will oppose Jaroslav Halak in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarters.

(Just in case you're wondering why Coach Bruce Boudreau turned to Varlamov instead of going back to Jose Theodore, you should have been here for warmups. It's not just Varlamov's stellar numbers vs. Theodore's supbar stats here). The fans, many whom were still searching for their seats, began taunting him with chants of "Tay-oh! Tay-oh!")

Anyway, the rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Fleischmann-Belanger-Semin
Laich-Morrison-Fehr
Chimera-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Carlson
Morrisonn-Corvo

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

As always, check back later for some postgame notes and quotes.

Hay-Hay Tarik!

Would you play Walker if it was your lineup?

Posted by: oo7 | April 19, 2010 7:01 PM | Report abuse

That decision surprised me as well. At any rate, Allons-y Caps!

Posted by: Terptwin | April 19, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Glad to see he's letting Gordo go. Stecks was just awful the last two games. Gordo was great in game on, so I think he deserves a shot. I like this lineup. Lots of speed up and down. If Mr. Nasty and Greener have another clunker, I'd like to see 55 paired with the kid and SMo moved up with Green. We'll see how they do tonight.

Posted by: cbl-pdx | April 19, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Wait Green has been playing too safe? Does he know what the word safe means?

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 19, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

anyone got a link to watch the game?

Posted by: chrislarry | April 19, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

@Hamma

I guess that means that he hasn't been taking advantage of his opportunities? Which I think we all can admit, is when he is most effective.

I mean, if you are going to SUCK on D, at least store some goals to counter the ones you help give up?

NOW THATS SOME SICK PSYCHOLOGY!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 19, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

NHL.com is offering tonight's games for $19.95.

I think Gordon will do fine in place of Steckel. He has stepped up nearly every time he has been needed this season. I really hope the Caps get back to crashing the net - Halak can't deal with that, it seems.

Varly looks strong, and Semin hustled back on that potential odd man rush. Great to see. Now let's get one here.

will this be the night th pp scores?

Posted by: jdove80 | April 19, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Stecks best feature is his faceoffs and Gordon actually had a better % in the regular season (with too little attempts to qualify for the league leaders).

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 19, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Timmyv - does Gordon ever finish a check? He looks like he is avoiding all contact?

Posted by: zmega | April 19, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I'd rather play 5 on 5 than be with a man advantage. PP stinks.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 19, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Difference between JC & the rest of our pointmen right now is he can get the shot through or drive to the net to get his shots.

Posted by: Rocc00 | April 19, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 19, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

THE PP IS ABSOLUTE CRAP. We won't be getting many and we're wasting all these opportunities.. not a great start. Too many good chances for the Canadiens and not much for the Caps.. need to get in front of Halak. His job so far is very easy.

The PP is just painful to watch right now... UGH, gross.

hey - at least the guys aren't down by a goal or more!!

Posted by: ebolean1 | April 19, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

PP still sucked. pretty obvious the Habs have the middle closed for passes yet they still force them and get picked off or deflected.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 19, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Didn't do anything on their PPPs. The first P stands for putrid.

Posted by: CDon | April 19, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

VARLY!

There...I said it.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 19, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

What the heck was Green doing that first period? Hate to say it but I think he needs to be pulled off the top PP line for a game. He's making really bad passes (either off target or far, far too soft), and poor decisions. Not playing at all like he's capable of and either Poti or Corvo should take his place if Washington wants to get their special teams going. At least Laich is screening. Put Laich in front of the net, Ovechkin and someone who can make a pass on point, screen and shoot. That's it. Keep it simple. But with Green back there it's not going to work unless he picks his game up or just starts firing the puck.

I wouldn't give the D an A. We have given up a few really good chances that Varly has stood on his head for. The one timer on the pass from behind the point for starters.

As for the offense I would say it is around a C. Our PP is an F but 5 on 5 we have had a couple of good looks just not scored.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 19, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Well, we did have our chances. Chimera hit the crossbar, didn't he?

Posted by: Terptwin | April 19, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

The canadiens came out fired up. You can look at it as the reverse of game 1 when the caps came out hot. 0-0 game after the first is a win for the caps. If the PP was even mildly competent we might even be winning this game.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 19, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Stu_c | April 19, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

well 0-0...thats why they play three periods...but c'mon!

Posted by: chrislarry | April 19, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

The knowledgeable Montreal hockey fans - boo Ovi whenever he touches the puck, boo whenever any Cap touches one of their players, sing nursery rhymes the rest of the time.

Posted by: zmega | April 19, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

You have to figure the Habs would play a tough period. Maybe they tired themselves out some.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 19, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

I love that new Redskins Nation commercial. It seems so optimistic.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 19, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are throwing the body around. They already have 15 hits to the Canadiens' 7 hits.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 19, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

IMO, coming out of that period without a deficit is a plus.

This building, at this time of year, against THIS team, RIGHT NOW?

GOOD PERIOD, that could have been better! (see PP)

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 19, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Well, I didn't think the D was that great either. I'll bet the scoring chances will heavily favor the Habs when they come up. That said, surviving the first period of the first playoff game at Bell is not a bad thing.

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 19, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom and Semin came to play tonight. Ovi's not doing much, but he did make a couple of attempts to take out the Habs midgets. I would love to see that. Or Gill.

Posted by: zmega | April 19, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Montreal is getting as many shots off on our PP as us. They look like they have the man advantage at times on our PP.

I don't know if it's their speed, energy, anticipation, etc... but they are getting to pucks first in all 3 zones.

I'm not sure if there is a good way to deal with their speed other than for all of our players to pay extra attention to their positioning.

Sloan is faster than some of our defensemen but he's error prone and I'm not sure who you would take out of the lineup.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 19, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 19, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Green looks way too timid and somewhat scared even on the PP... looks like he's too afraid to make a mistake out there

on the other hand Carlson and even Corvo look confident

Posted by: joek443 | April 19, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

The only way to slow Montreal down is to finish every check. Usually, the Caps do that in the first period and then let up. If they keep it up, eventually having 210 pound guys hit 170 pound guys will take a toll.

7-4 scoring chances--I thought it would be worse than that. But to be honest I don't remember 4 good Caps scoring chances. Seems like Varly had to stand on his head, but Halak didn't.
