Tonight's lineup: Caps at Canadiens (update)

Seymon Varlamov will be in net for the Caps, who will take their second crack at eliminating the Canadiens tonight in Game 6 of the conference quarters. Jaroslav Halak, meantime, is expected to be in Montreal's net.

The Caps' lineup still is not apparent. Coach Bruce Boudreau showed one set of lines in warmups. But the starting lineup indicates it might be something different.

I hope to update the blog once the combos are clear.

This much, however, is known: Brendan Morrison, Quintin Laing, Scott Walker, John Eskine and Tyler Sloan are your healthy scratches.

For the Habs, Jaroslav Spacek is out again with an illness. He'll be replaced by touted prospect PK Subban, who received a big ovation during warmups.

Update:Here are the Caps' lines so far:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Belanger-Knuble
Laich-Backstrom-Semin
Chimera-Gordon-Fehr
Fleischmann-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Carlson
Morrisonn-Corvo

Be sure to check back later. I'll have some postgame notes and quotes around midnight.

nice pinch by Corvo

two bad plays by Semin on that shift, first a weak play along the boards, typical for him. and then a turnover inside our zone.

interesting lines.

I'm sitting here wondering what it will take for the Caps to play with a true sense of urgency. I'm hoping they find it on this PK.

Here we go again....

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 26, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

The 8th seeded team that we're facing is more fundamentally sound in all 3 zones.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

FIGHT!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Lucky bounce off our stick right to Cemmalleri's sweet spot. We better start getting those type of bounces.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 26, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Weak Varly. Not much of a screen.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 26, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Well time to man up and even the score

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 26, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

we got too many little forwards on our PK that don't do anything to disrupt the flow. And then it doesn't help when our D can't get it out.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

I think we're looking pretty good. that was just a weak call.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Joe B. said "again" like he TOO was sick of the CRAP!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Way too easy there. Can't let guys slip to the slot. Gotta hope this little deficit gets the Caps going.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Just once. Just once it would be nice to score first.

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 26, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

i'm having horrors of game 7 on wednesday...

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

3 hits so far for the Caps in 10 mins of hockey.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

NOOOOOOOOOO.... this is getting painful... we need to score to answer this....

Posted by: vm114 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Double weak Varly. Great pick Boudreau.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah great this one is going 7 cause a certain team decided to no show again

Posted by: jdove80 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Good nite -- this game and series is over. This team is not built for the playoffs. The Caps come out hard, then wilt. They suck.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Or second.

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Caps are getting run. Montreal looks like the favorite right now.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Wow - weak start. Varly gives up a weak one. Boudreau needs to call a timeout and wake this team up. Anyone want to cover Cammelari?????

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

that was weak - time for theo

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

They blew this in game five. Ridiculous.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Hmmmmmmmmm. I should have bought more beer today. BUT...we can do it!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

well like i said, the first 10 minutes would tell if they are ready. I guess not. But remember they came back in game 2

Posted by: bigschu8 | April 26, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Bruce's vaunted lineup changes so far = el puko

next time maybe one of us should do it for him.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

seriously boys... play like we are a #1 seed....

Posted by: vm114 | April 26, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

The only chance for redemption is for us to win tonight. Oh no no no. Two goals, The same thing as last time. If we lose, let's just forfeit the series. I can't bear to see us in the position of playing catch up and screwing up opportunities.

Posted by: caraveli | April 26, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

And what stinks is you can't pull Varly here because the game's in Montreal. This is exactly what I feared would happen when the Caps couldn't close out in Game 5. Awful goal.

Sad, sad, sad. From the start of the playoffs, this series scared me because the Caps don't match up well with Montreal. The season is flashing before my eyes.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Unless they pick up Halak's rebounds, this game is over.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

and another, I smell 3-0.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 26, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

And no Caps player is getting into the crease and poking in rebounds. That's the only way they win this game.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Brendan Morrison should be playing. He was flying in game 5, had multiple passes to Semin that should have been buried. Disappointing.

Posted by: MorrisonFan | April 26, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Well folks unless this team decides to wake up - have a great time at Game 7 Wednesday night. This team just doesn't know how to finish the deal. Damn I'm hope I'm wrong and they pull a Pittsburgh and comeback.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

well, that Montreal writer had it right when he said, keys to the series, go down 3 games to 1.

we are a playoff bust and i don't care if we win this series, which is not looking good, we are a playoff bust because we do not know how to play in the playoffs. enjoy the president's trophy, that's the only thing we'll be drinking out of.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

The Caps don't match up with any team in the playoffs well.

We're an undisciplined hockey team. We don't do the little things well enough.

Montreal is a better coached hockey team. They do the little things better than us.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Varly just has to have that

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

they musta taken valiums.

outhit 10-3 now

Caps just want a non-physical game I think

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

This is an undisciplined, careless and, quite frankly, stupid team. They have no idea how to play from ahead and how to be successful in the playoffs. This is one of the saddest efforts I've ever seen.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

I smell BB getting fired if they lose this series

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 26, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

underachieving team in the playoffs. what is BB's playoff record now? 13-13? BOO.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

shortie would be nice

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

We can't even score point blank shots against Halak. Ridiculous.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Once again, a Bruce coached team goes down 2 goals. Once again, a Bruce coached team isn't ready when the bell rings. Once again, game 7. Win or lose tonight it doesn't matter. The run won't end in a Cup. Not with Bruce at the helm.

Posted by: caps1974 | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Won't pull Varly all he has to do is shut out Montreal the rest of the way and lose and he had a great game. What happened to we need 2 hot goalies?

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and earlier in the first the refs missed another too many men call on Montreal.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

so what do you think the lineup for game 7 will be?

flyers are salivating at the round 2 matchup, they can beat either of these 2 teams no matter who advances.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Caps don't look very good - one of their worst playoff starts ever.

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Don't be fooled by the SOG. Montreal has dictated play in the majority of this series.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

All the old-timers really shouldn't be complaining so much about the bandwagon. Just think of how many new fans are being introduced to the Capitals Collapse(TM) now that the playoffs have started!

Posted by: kresneck | April 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

We suck. Mike Green isnt good and cant paly defense at ALL! Semin is a choke artist and McPhee should just get what he can for him now before we lose him to free agency. Havalk is just on and I doubt we solve him. It is funny how Bruce pulls Theo after 2 quick goals and he leaves Varly in there when he lets up an easy 2nd goal. He is a joke and not a good coach. only reason he looks like one here is because of Ovie and Backstrom. I could look like a great coach with those 2!

Posted by: capsfan5252 | April 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

i would be more excited about a PP if our PP numbers haven't been so horrible....

Posted by: vm114 | April 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

I disagree. I think Montreal is a bad match up for the Caps, but I genuinely believe the Caps could beat Philly.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Power play. Big Whoop. If Semin is on it they can't score.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Is Ted going to continue to preach about the business of happiness and our generationally great hockey team that has barely won a single series in the Ovechkin era?

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: caps1974 | April 26, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

yes yes yes and yes.

again, not ready to play. Bruce should go back to being an offensive assistant. His teams are as mentally soft in their heads as he is in his belly. This is like a Norv Turner team.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Well if the Caps lose, Flyers will play Pittsburgh based on the seedings.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

As of right now, Caps have been outscored 8-3 in the first period this series.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: bigschu8 | April 26, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

RIDICULOUS! THIS IS THE BEST POWER PLAY TEAM IN THE NHL!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

they need to just play. the pp is just standing around. gotta move the puck to open the lanes

Posted by: bigschu8 | April 26, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Same pp. not moving. stationary. no one is moving. A blind man can see who is shooting and where is coming from.

Posted by: hock1 | April 26, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

I don't post often, but this is brutal. Regardless of whether they lose this and then win game 7, serious questions need to be asked about the make up of this team.

This team is physically and mentally weak, and as others have pointed out, they are not built for the playoffs. Once the hard hitting starts, they fold. However, they're no more than one or two players away. Get rid of guys like Flash and pick up some true grit. Even Chimera, I'm not sure what he brings that a guy like Carcillo or even Kunitz doesn't. I don't dislike BB, but I question whether he can get his players to play when it matters most. Roenick made a comment on Versus specifically about Semin, basically saying that time will tell if Semin raises his game now that the paychecks have stop. Great quote, and 100% true.

Posted by: Fletch22 | April 26, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

they are owning us in ALL areas of the game. we have no idea how to compete with this team. i hate having to feel this way because i love this team but this is becoming a playoff habit.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 26, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: hock1 | April 26, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 26, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jdove80 | April 26, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

What an absolute friggin' killer. No one wanted to shoot the puck on a 5-on-3. This is becoming the saddest performance of the year tonight. I mean, how do you not convert on a 5-on-3?

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

All that PP time and yet Boudreau AGAIN does not put Carlson out there. Just plain stupid. You have to be the dumbest coach right now. It is inexcusable. Get over your loyatly for Green and put someone in there that will get the job done.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 26, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Yeah if the Habs end up winning they will get crushed. I think they would play the Pens though.

Posted by: jdove80

It depends if Boston wins or not. The Habs would actually play Buffalo because they are the next lowest seed. Then the Flyers would play Pittsburgh.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Awful. After following the Caps for 30 years...I'm not even surprised. Sad.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | April 26, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

-------

sad thing is, they're playing by far the least physical team in the league. Not just the playoffs. But leaguewide Montreal is the least physical team.

at least we got some rhythm going on the PP now, we almost scored at the end.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

How does PK Subban look? He's quite a talent, bold move to bring him up during the playoffs.

Note to Bruce: play BMo in game 7. You won't regret it.

Posted by: MorrisonFan | April 26, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

we really worked that one side on the two-man advantage, we must have made 5 passes in a row between the same two players, that's good right?

Posted by: natresgroup | April 26, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps had been able to score on any of their PPs during this series, they would've walked to a 4-0 or 4-1 win. But that obviously didn't happen, so here we are, watching this pile of garbage tonight.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 26, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

I guess the Caps are lucky to be down just 2-0. They're doing nothing that made them successful against Halak. They're shooting from a distance before anyone else gets in front of the net.

Canadiens are winning the neutral zone battles. They're not letting the Caps skate in, so they're going to have to play a forechecking game that they're apparently not ready for.

This series is mirroring last year's Caps-Rangers matchup. It was clear the Caps were playing better hockey when they were down 3-1, and eventually, they came back and won the series. It's been fairly clear that the Canadiens have played better hockey more consistently than the Caps, and now Montreal is storming back.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

GMGM built this team, from the coach on down.

It's embarrassing how much better Montreal is at the little things.

They take away space better. They use their sticks better. They makes smarter plays in all 3 zones. They make better passes. They are even more creative than our vaunted offense.

They may not score like we do but they do just about everything else better.

They play defense first.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Bruce has to go - cannot come back to Wash for Game 7.

GMGM can send a message: unacceptable. BB has been outclassed/outcoached. His unstable behavior in game 5 cost the team and he is the reason we are so tight right now.

BB has to go!

They gotta start doing what they are built to do. Pass the puck up with speed. Are the forwards not open? Is Montreal not giving our D time to make that pass? I keep seeing these little chip shots into the neutral zone. They need to come back as a 5 man unit and leave the zone as a 5 man unit.

this might turn out like the '98 Capitals season for the Penguins....the 4 seed sees all the top seeds lose in the first round and get home-ice for rest of the playoffs.
Boston is up now, if they can hold on Pens will have home-ice cause theres no way Caps win game 7.

Posted by: kman2 | April 26, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

I heard a post game from one of the Western conference coaches who, using the Caps as his example, said the power play is not as effective in the playoffs because guys lay out to block shots with their bodies in the playoffs - something they don't do in the regular season 'cause it's too dangerous.

Posted by: MorrisonFan | April 26, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

I don't think we'll win game 7. I'll happily eat my words if we do but it just doesn't seem like they are adjusting their style of play. Nobody is picking up the rebounds, still way too many shots from the circles and points, too much passing on the PP. Halak's in their head. It's not looking good. I'm going to watch it though. :D

I'd have to agree as well. First game MTL was the better team, MTL was the better team for 2/3 of game 2, we dominated game 3, MTL won 2/3 in game 4, MTL outplayed us game 5 and so far through game 6 MTL has outplayed us.. so I guess it's okay to say we're lucky to still be up 3-2 right now?

It doesn't matter the year, the players, the coach, or the team we play. We all saw this coming, and we all know what is coming. I have rooted for this team for 25 years, and it will never, ever change, why should this year be any different?

i'm sick of having to talk sh*t about this team but they are such a let down. What's the excuse this year? We're not new to the playoffs. It's nothing new to play against a tight checking team with speed. What's the excuse? What are they going to be saying in their last interview of the season sitting in front of their lockers? We forgot it was the playoffs? The ice was bad? What's it gonna be?

Posted by: kcbrichmond | April 26, 2010 7:54 PM

And the few adjustments he has tried to make have been largely ineffective.

Again, Montreal has dictated the play in all 3 zones for the majority of this series.

They could match us on the shot chart if they wanted to take as many wild, long-distance shots and take as many risks, offensively.

They are playing smarter and a more complete brand of hockey with an emphasis on defense and avoiding risks.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

they dont need to blow up the team. They have about two-thirds of the pieces. They just need to knock off their GM and coach, thank em for the offensive skill they've added to the team and then bring in someone who understands what the word B A L A N C E means.

this is not a bad roster. Just an underachieving team without much chemistry or heart. Unfortunately teams like this exist and can put up big reg season records and they fool people into thinking they're a great team.

Also not sure why BB needed the double secret lineups. Did anyone think he was taking his favorite Flash out of the lineup? Flash is completely useless on the fourth line, though he's been useless period. At this point there's really no reason Walker isn't in the lineup. He's one of the guys who will bang the body with MTL. Even a guy like Laing who will catapult himself in front of shots a'la Ian Laperriere regardless of any harm that may result. It's guys like Laing who will literally do anything to help the team, like throwing his face in front of a shot a'la Ian Lapperiere. Heroic acts that inspire a team in the playoffs. If Flash doesn't record a goal or an assist, there's little statistical evidence that he even played the game. He doesn't hit, he doesn't go into the tough areas. When was the last time he blocked a shot on purpose? I don't just don't get it. Disgraceful effort, this one's on both BB and team.

The Caps really woke up in that period.

They didn't score - but were worthy of like 7 goals for.

More importantly they didn't give up any either.

Eventually Montreal will get tired - all that hitting and emotion early catches up and we need one error from Halak.

If we'd seen this effort from the beginning, there wouldn't be a hole to dig out of. This is why you have to come to play from the drop of the puck. I'm now cheering for the Canadiens because I want to win the Cup and this team is hardheaded. They need to be embarrassed before they learn anything.

They've made the same mistakes all year long....most fans just didn't realize it because the end result was the best record in the league...

IMO, the problems are, in order:

1. BB's system. Not NHL playoff ready. Period.

2. Bad mix of players for playoff success. To much O, not enough D, too many skilled guys playing as individuals, not committed to getting puck deep, (was that another OVi turnover at the blue line?, Was that another time Semin didn't finish a check?)

3. OVI needs to change his game. He IS ONE dimentional. His game is noticed in ONE zone. Sure he hits. But what zone does he hit in? Malkin, Crosby, Zetterburg, Datsuk, Backstrom > Ovi.

Until he leads by example, and plays as hard in his own end, and in the nuetral zone as he plays in the O-end, he will never reach his potential, and will only help in 1 area of the game.

HOW TO FIX IT?

- That's the part i'm struggling with. Can we really consider firing BB? He's a staple in this town, has led us to be the hottest ticket in town, is on every freaken commercial, etc.

- Get rid of Semin and Green? Maybe..

- Get rid of OVi? Come, that's not gonna happen. Plus, even with his deficiencies, he still contributes. Just not at the level a Crosby, Malkin, or other top CENTERs can (don't flame me with stats. Those guys kill penalties, win faceoffs, dig the puck out of their own end, and ensure posession of the puck).

Joe B and Lauglin need to give us the scoop on Poti. That shot to the face did not look good, and a third period comeback will be hard with only 5 d-men.

Wow the negativity here abound. I thought of coming here for some positive vibe ... Nothing but disapointment.

Refs are trying to hand the Caps the game. But for some reason they wont take it.

Don't understand the Caps - they should have 5-8 goals easy. No goalie is this good.

I was going to just flat-out say that this series is over but upon reflection there is still a faint glimmer of hope. Let's just see what the caps do in the first 5 minutes on Wednesday night. If it looks like the 2nd period tonight, they have a chance. If it looks like any of the rest of the last two games in this series, don't even bother putting yourself through it folks. Another patented Caps playoff collapse will be in its final stages.

First goal on Wednesday is critical. And let's not kid ourselves, folks, the Caps have played 3 very tentative, tight game 7s in the last couple of years. They were extremely lucky to survive one last year.

highest scoring team in hockey has 1 goal in its last two games. I guess Montreal is just a defensive juggernaut.

I hate this. The capitals make me feel like, well, I probably would get banned for saying it here. Let's just say they keep dishing out the punishment and I keep coming back for more.

As angry as I want to be with this team, we outplayed them tremendously. Halak stole it from us yet again :(

If the Caps win Game 7, they will go all the way. They just have a horrible matchup with the Flabs. Crazy hot goalie and bad matchups. The Flabs played us tough in the regular season too.
