Tonight's lineup: Caps at Canadiens (update)
Seymon Varlamov will be in net for the Caps, who will take their second crack at eliminating the Canadiens tonight in Game 6 of the conference quarters. Jaroslav Halak, meantime, is expected to be in Montreal's net.
The Caps' lineup still is not apparent. Coach Bruce Boudreau showed one set of lines in warmups. But the starting lineup indicates it might be something different.
I hope to update the blog once the combos are clear.
This much, however, is known: Brendan Morrison, Quintin Laing, Scott Walker, John Eskine and Tyler Sloan are your healthy scratches.
For the Habs, Jaroslav Spacek is out again with an illness. He'll be replaced by touted prospect PK Subban, who received a big ovation during warmups.
Update:Here are the Caps' lines so far:
Forwards
Ovechkin-Belanger-Knuble
Laich-Backstrom-Semin
Chimera-Gordon-Fehr
Fleischmann-Steckel-Bradley
Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Carlson
Morrisonn-Corvo
Be sure to check back later. I'll have some postgame notes and quotes around midnight.

The only chance for redemption is for us to win tonight. Oh no no no. Two goals, The same thing as last time. If we lose, let's just forfeit the series. I can't bear to see us in the position of playing catch up and screwing up opportunities.
Posted by: caraveli | April 26, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse
And what stinks is you can't pull Varly here because the game's in Montreal. This is exactly what I feared would happen when the Caps couldn't close out in Game 5. Awful goal.
Sad, sad, sad. From the start of the playoffs, this series scared me because the Caps don't match up well with Montreal. The season is flashing before my eyes.

well, that Montreal writer had it right when he said, keys to the series, go down 3 games to 1.
we are a playoff bust and i don't care if we win this series, which is not looking good, we are a playoff bust because we do not know how to play in the playoffs. enjoy the president's trophy, that's the only thing we'll be drinking out of.

We suck. Mike Green isnt good and cant paly defense at ALL! Semin is a choke artist and McPhee should just get what he can for him now before we lose him to free agency. Havalk is just on and I doubt we solve him. It is funny how Bruce pulls Theo after 2 quick goals and he leaves Varly in there when he lets up an easy 2nd goal. He is a joke and not a good coach. only reason he looks like one here is because of Ovie and Backstrom. I could look like a great coach with those 2!

I don't post often, but this is brutal. Regardless of whether they lose this and then win game 7, serious questions need to be asked about the make up of this team.
This team is physically and mentally weak, and as others have pointed out, they are not built for the playoffs. Once the hard hitting starts, they fold. However, they're no more than one or two players away. Get rid of guys like Flash and pick up some true grit. Even Chimera, I'm not sure what he brings that a guy like Carcillo or even Kunitz doesn't. I don't dislike BB, but I question whether he can get his players to play when it matters most. Roenick made a comment on Versus specifically about Semin, basically saying that time will tell if Semin raises his game now that the paychecks have stop. Great quote, and 100% true.

I guess the Caps are lucky to be down just 2-0. They're doing nothing that made them successful against Halak. They're shooting from a distance before anyone else gets in front of the net.
Canadiens are winning the neutral zone battles. They're not letting the Caps skate in, so they're going to have to play a forechecking game that they're apparently not ready for.

This series is mirroring last year's Caps-Rangers matchup. It was clear the Caps were playing better hockey when they were down 3-1, and eventually, they came back and won the series. It's been fairly clear that the Canadiens have played better hockey more consistently than the Caps, and now Montreal is storming back.
Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse
GMGM built this team, from the coach on down.
It's embarrassing how much better Montreal is at the little things.
They take away space better. They use their sticks better. They makes smarter plays in all 3 zones. They make better passes. They are even more creative than our vaunted offense.
They may not score like we do but they do just about everything else better.
They play defense first.

Bruce has to go - cannot come back to Wash for Game 7.
GMGM can send a message: unacceptable. BB has been outclassed/outcoached. His unstable behavior in game 5 cost the team and he is the reason we are so tight right now.

They gotta start doing what they are built to do. Pass the puck up with speed. Are the forwards not open? Is Montreal not giving our D time to make that pass? I keep seeing these little chip shots into the neutral zone. They need to come back as a 5 man unit and leave the zone as a 5 man unit.

Posted by: kman2 | April 26, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse
I heard a post game from one of the Western conference coaches who, using the Caps as his example, said the power play is not as effective in the playoffs because guys lay out to block shots with their bodies in the playoffs - something they don't do in the regular season 'cause it's too dangerous.

I don't think we'll win game 7. I'll happily eat my words if we do but it just doesn't seem like they are adjusting their style of play. Nobody is picking up the rebounds, still way too many shots from the circles and points, too much passing on the PP. Halak's in their head. It's not looking good. I'm going to watch it though. :D

I'd have to agree as well. First game MTL was the better team, MTL was the better team for 2/3 of game 2, we dominated game 3, MTL won 2/3 in game 4, MTL outplayed us game 5 and so far through game 6 MTL has outplayed us.. so I guess it's okay to say we're lucky to still be up 3-2 right now?

i'm sick of having to talk sh*t about this team but they are such a let down. What's the excuse this year? We're not new to the playoffs. It's nothing new to play against a tight checking team with speed. What's the excuse? What are they going to be saying in their last interview of the season sitting in front of their lockers? We forgot it was the playoffs? The ice was bad? What's it gonna be?

And the few adjustments he has tried to make have been largely ineffective.
Again, Montreal has dictated the play in all 3 zones for the majority of this series.
They could match us on the shot chart if they wanted to take as many wild, long-distance shots and take as many risks, offensively.
They are playing smarter and a more complete brand of hockey with an emphasis on defense and avoiding risks.
Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse
they dont need to blow up the team. They have about two-thirds of the pieces. They just need to knock off their GM and coach, thank em for the offensive skill they've added to the team and then bring in someone who understands what the word B A L A N C E means.
this is not a bad roster. Just an underachieving team without much chemistry or heart. Unfortunately teams like this exist and can put up big reg season records and they fool people into thinking they're a great team.

Also not sure why BB needed the double secret lineups. Did anyone think he was taking his favorite Flash out of the lineup? Flash is completely useless on the fourth line, though he's been useless period. At this point there's really no reason Walker isn't in the lineup. He's one of the guys who will bang the body with MTL. Even a guy like Laing who will catapult himself in front of shots a'la Ian Laperriere regardless of any harm that may result. It's guys like Laing who will literally do anything to help the team, like throwing his face in front of a shot a'la Ian Lapperiere. Heroic acts that inspire a team in the playoffs. If Flash doesn't record a goal or an assist, there's little statistical evidence that he even played the game. He doesn't hit, he doesn't go into the tough areas. When was the last time he blocked a shot on purpose? I don't just don't get it. Disgraceful effort, this one's on both BB and team.

The Caps really woke up in that period.
They didn't score - but were worthy of like 7 goals for.
More importantly they didn't give up any either.
Eventually Montreal will get tired - all that hitting and emotion early catches up and we need one error from Halak.

If we'd seen this effort from the beginning, there wouldn't be a hole to dig out of. This is why you have to come to play from the drop of the puck. I'm now cheering for the Canadiens because I want to win the Cup and this team is hardheaded. They need to be embarrassed before they learn anything.

Welcome new posters....
Did you really NOT see this coming?
They've made the same mistakes all year long....most fans just didn't realize it because the end result was the best record in the league...
IMO, the problems are, in order:
1. BB's system. Not NHL playoff ready. Period.
2. Bad mix of players for playoff success. To much O, not enough D, too many skilled guys playing as individuals, not committed to getting puck deep, (was that another OVi turnover at the blue line?, Was that another time Semin didn't finish a check?)
3. OVI needs to change his game. He IS ONE dimentional. His game is noticed in ONE zone. Sure he hits. But what zone does he hit in? Malkin, Crosby, Zetterburg, Datsuk, Backstrom > Ovi.
Until he leads by example, and plays as hard in his own end, and in the nuetral zone as he plays in the O-end, he will never reach his potential, and will only help in 1 area of the game.
HOW TO FIX IT?
- That's the part i'm struggling with. Can we really consider firing BB? He's a staple in this town, has led us to be the hottest ticket in town, is on every freaken commercial, etc.
- Get rid of Semin and Green? Maybe..
- Get rid of OVi? Come, that's not gonna happen. Plus, even with his deficiencies, he still contributes. Just not at the level a Crosby, Malkin, or other top CENTERs can (don't flame me with stats. Those guys kill penalties, win faceoffs, dig the puck out of their own end, and ensure posession of the puck).

Joe B and Lauglin need to give us the scoop on Poti. That shot to the face did not look good, and a third period comeback will be hard with only 5 d-men.

Refs are trying to hand the Caps the game. But for some reason they wont take it.

Don't understand the Caps - they should have 5-8 goals easy. No goalie is this good.

I was going to just flat-out say that this series is over but upon reflection there is still a faint glimmer of hope. Let's just see what the caps do in the first 5 minutes on Wednesday night. If it looks like the 2nd period tonight, they have a chance. If it looks like any of the rest of the last two games in this series, don't even bother putting yourself through it folks. Another patented Caps playoff collapse will be in its final stages.
First goal on Wednesday is critical. And let's not kid ourselves, folks, the Caps have played 3 very tentative, tight game 7s in the last couple of years. They were extremely lucky to survive one last year.

highest scoring team in hockey has 1 goal in its last two games. I guess Montreal is just a defensive juggernaut.

I hate this. The capitals make me feel like, well, I probably would get banned for saying it here. Let's just say they keep dishing out the punishment and I keep coming back for more.

As angry as I want to be with this team, we outplayed them tremendously. Halak stole it from us yet again :(

If the Caps win Game 7, they will go all the way. They just have a horrible matchup with the Flabs. Crazy hot goalie and bad matchups. The Flabs played us tough in the regular season too.
