Tonight's lineup: Caps at Canadiens
Semyon Varlamov will make his fourth straight start in goal tonight at Bell Centre. Carey Price, meantime, will get the nod for the Canadiens.
Shaone Morrisonn took the pre-game warmup, but it appears that he'll miss his fifth straight game with a concussion.
The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:
Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Giroux
Laich-Morrison-Fehr
Fleischmann-Perreault-Clark
Steckel-Beagle-Bradley
Defense
Schultz-Green
Alzner-Jurcina
Erskine-Pothier
Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore
Check back after the game for some notes and quotes.

Excited about the Capitals playing in Montreal on Hockey Night in Canada. Having NHL Network is the next best thing to moving to Canada.
Also, will be interesting to see what Cherry says about Ovechkin's hit on Kaleta. I'm sure he wouldn't be able to help himself and keep his trap shut.
Perreault could have a good night in his home town, especially since it might easier for him to play the Habs because they're a small team by NHL standards.
Also, hope to see Giroux do well in the first line. Go, Caps!

Why is Giroux on the 1st line? Brads should be. Why is Schultz with Green!>? I would go with Alzner!

Hope Ovie and Varly have a good night tonight. But above all, I hope we correct the third period collapse.
Curious that he has Giroux on the first line. Maybe it will work. Giroux has yet to translate his AHL success to NHL. Maybe playing with Ovie will bring out the best in him.
All I can say is that I am relieved Varly is in goal. Hope he doesn't disappoint.

but the puck stuck to the back of the net, so the goal was hard to detect!

When ShaMo is out, Green tends to be paired with Schultz.
Alzner and Jurcina were a great combination together last year so they figured they'd keep them together.

Let's hope they can hang on to the lead (unlike the game against Ottawa and various games vs NJ.)
Then again, they should have motivation. Last week's loss to Montreal really stung.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse
Boudreau assumed we'd kill the end of that penalty so he put Ovechkin out there.
The result?
Ovechkin massively overpursued the puck leaving a guy wide opn in the center of the ice. He scores and the momentum has officially shifted.
I think killing the penalty was more important than anything given the already shifting momentum.
I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Giroux looks awful.
Posted by: Aldred15 | November 28, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse
I'm just repeating myself but Boudreau gambled and it bit us in the ass.
Putting Ovechkin on at the end of the last power play resulted in a total shift in the game.
The momentum was already shifting after Price stopped Ovechkin but if we could've killed off that penalty, we could've taken away their momentum.
Ovechkin overpurues the puck, goal, and it's all downhill from there.

Agreed. This was one horrible period. When are the Caps EVER going to learn how to hold leads? They should realized that 2 goals a game is what the Carey Prices and Martin Brodeurs of the world give up. And if they find themselved up by 2-0 that they need to hold on to the @#@#@# lead.

Watch the replay on Montreal's first goal when you get a chance.
Ovechkin was definitely the culprit on the ice. He left his man to overpursue the puck on the strong side.
Off the ice, you could blame Boudreau for putting Ovechkin out there in the first place before that most critical penalty kill was complete.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse
Will they turn it around in the 3d period? One early goal could change the momentum. We may have a better chance at turning it around than holding on to a lead. Yes. we have only had 11 SOG but, on the other hand, Montreal has 16 shots against us. This is not a huge number. We still could turn it around. I am nervous.

Those were pretty feeble attempts by Flash and Ovi.
Fortunately, Backstrom was up to the task.
Varlamov should get a lot of credit for this win.
Again, Boudreau's gamble to put Ovechkin out there at the end of that PK earlier in the game was nearly very costly. Ovechkin should get some blame as well for commpletely failing to recognize proper spacing and overpursuing the puck.

I hate to take the credit for it, but ever since I spent some quality time with Eric Fehr at Hockey 'n Heels 2 weeks ago, he's been on fire! We took a picture and he showed me a tip to shooting to score a goal and I was one of the few who actually scored a GOAL at the event.
And since then, Eric has found his 'nose for the net' and has scored some important goals, beginning with the goal against Montreal the day after the event. Coincidence...I think not....

The Devils keep rolling along, in spite of all their injuries. They clobbered the Isles tonight.
I notice that, due to tie breakers, the Isles, Rangers, and Philthy are out of the top 8 in the standings. Who would have ever thought that? Yes, I realize it's early in the season but......

It's pretty amazing that we've only lost a single game by more than a goal this season and that was without Ovechkin and Knuble.
Even in that game, we were up 2-0 at one point.

@DevilsCapsGal
Thanks. Just keep close to Eric Fehr from now until the end of the season so he can stay hot.
He may have found a home as 2nd line right wing. One of our returning injured RW's may find himself on the third line. (But I do like them both, along with Fehr.) I seem to like the guys who are battling for the same slots.

And Semin was trying to play with a bad wrist as well in that NJ game.
No Ovi. No Knuble. Semin impaired.

I'm a Caps lifer who now lives and works in Atlanta. As such, I catch some Thrashers games on occasion. (I have to get my NHL fix somewhere!) While I can't side with the Thrashers, I'm not afraid to admit that they've improved immensely since the trade deadline last season.
They have received a boost from the likes of Pavel Kubina, Maxim Afinogenov and Nik Antropov. They continue to receive production from the waiver wire pickup Rich Peverley. They've also received good play from the kids, Evander Kane on offense and Zac Bogosian on defense.
That said, the Thrashers need to be careful of two things in particular. First, they have backloaded their schedule. Have you looked at their schedule after the Olympic break? They'll play 17 games during March.
Another thing is they've been relatively fortunate with injuries. Yes, losing Kovalchuk for a month was a big deal and they haven't been down 6-7 starters. Should they begin to wear down, they won't have the organizational depth that Washington has. Look no further than the AHL standings during the past few years. The proof is in the pudding.
Yes, I would love to see the Atlanta (or Tampa Bay) continue to be competitive. The Caps will need a kick to keep them going once they get healthy. Competition is a great antidote for complacency.
Go Caps go!

Nice work, DevilsCapsGal!
Then again, I could take credit for falling asleep on the couch (pneumonia's fault) when the Caps were ahead 2 - 0, waking up to see that they were down 3 - 2 but pulling Varley for a 6 on 4 game tying goal, and willing with all my might that Nicky would be the hero! Lesson---stay awake and the Caps win, lol.
Glad to see the Caps pull that one off, and I'm really looking forward to the return of our injured players.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
First things first - an earlier poster stated that this was a point the Caps stole? Not so much. They nearly pissed away these two points. They should've buried this team tonight. Give Price credit for making the stop on Ovie on the breakaway which was a turning point even though the first two goals for the Habs were luck.
This is a team of resiliency. They fought the Habs and refs. I hardly get on the refs even when they were bad but tonight in the 3rd period it's ridiculous. The two calls for the two man advantage were RIDICULOUS. That tripping call??? C'monn he smacked his skate and he waits and then falls - that should've been called a dive. The hold on Laich was tough - he had the arm around but it's the free hand in those cases and that hand wasn't wrapped around. That could've gone either way.
Thank you Eric Fehr for continuing to have a nose for the net.
Ovie - what are you thinking in the shootout? Even if you deke him that puck is going off the side of the net.
Nice finish Backstrom. We owed this team full of clutchers and grabbers.
I hope all of you enjoyed the CSN game. I was stuck watching it on NHL network with the Hockey Night in Canada feed and ugh if they aren't the biggest bunch of homers. Just pathetic and of course I flipped off at the intermission. I'm not wasting my time watching that bag of hot air - Don Cherry and his circus stunt suits. :)
A great comeback win. On to Carolina for the Canes. It's been a two point night.

ATL is actually considered to be one of the deeper teams in the league. The Wolves are pretty good..I mean they won the Cup in 07-08...
At least they were at the start of the season. LA was said to be one of the deeper teams as well, and seems to be struggling with all their injuries right now.

I'm a big fan of Fehr and Flash. I believe they'll be among the supporting cast that brings the Stanley Cup to Washington within the next year or so. A little bit of Flash and a little bit of Fehr go a long way!

Not sure, CapsFan. I have to admit: during the looong regular season I tend to get overly-excited about personal stats. Combine that with my severe dislike of the Pens and you get an unhealthy amount of attention paid to who is allowing Crosby to have 5 ffreakin' points.
I'm sure the Rangers folks are just chalking it up as a bad decision to rest Henrik against the Pens: Valiquette has been brutal this year.

Eh..that holding call will be called 9/10 times. Pretty simple. Though I have to agree about the tripping..a bit of an embellishment.
Refs were bad both ways. Ovi drew a "trip" that didn't seem like much.

ANTON VOLCHENKOV!
I will not give up my crusade for him. (If he's healthy)

Atlanta does indeed have a deep team. They now possess three scoring lines and two solid defensive pairings. They also have decent goaltending in Pavelec and Hedberg. (They're more effective combined than the injured Lehtonen is alone.) I argue that one of their weaknesses is organizational depth. GM Waddell has been notorious for misfiring during the draft and then having to scramble in the free agent market. If they stay healthy, the Thrashers should make the playoffs. Let's see what happens during that back stretch after the Olympic break.

This is the depth I am referring to as well. I follow ATL pretty closely as well, and although Waddell is noted for mis-firing on higher picks, he doesn't do too bad. Like I said, the Wolves won the Cup before the Bears did.
But like I also said, LA was considered to have considerable organizational depth as well. They are struggling hard right now with all of the injuries, so who knows how deep they really are.
ATL, LA, STL, NSH were all noted to be the deepest teams in the league, in reference to organizational depth, at the start of the season. ATL will indeed have that claim tested when their injuries come.

Now they have a PP for the final 2 minutes of regulation.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | November 28, 2009 11:04 PM | Report abuse
Oh, and the game-tying goal came off the stick of none other than Jeff Halpern.
On a side note, there are only 2 players in the NHL that I knew off the ice and the both play for the Lightning now (Halpern and St. Louis). Halpern was a good friend of mine growing up and I went to college with St. Louis.

And a Stamkos giveaway leads to a Dallas OT win. At least TB only got a point but Dallas should have won it in regulation.

Will we be able to afford ANTON VOLCHENKOV?
Assumptions:
1) Theodore is allowed to walk
2) We sign Semin and Backstrom to extensions
3) Nylander is off our Cap space (maybe sent to the Orensville Owls)

I'm a fan of Flash and Fehr also. They are my two favorite Caps after Semin & Ovi. Although Varly's up there, too.
After that are probably Knuble and Clark.

He's a UFA at the end of this year.
Can we afford him this year? Yes. Also, a 2nd or 3rd would probably do it for him.
I don't necessarily want him as part of the team for the future, though he would be an upgrade to any d man we have now. I was thinking moreso rental wise.

I get too excited about regular season stats as well. And my dislike of the Pens is unhealthy as well. I've gotten my husband to hate the Pens almost as much as I do. He refers to them as the Pen-goons. (I've also heard Pen-whines.)

I've never played hockey but grew up in Potomac and went to school with Halpern from 6th grade (Hoover) through 9th (Churchill) until he left to pursue hockey more seriously. We played soccer together. I actually knew him before 6th grade when he went to a different elementary school. We always had the same group of friends from 6th grade and on.
Not sure if we had a discussion but that sounds familiar.

I have no doubts they will make the playoffs, and we don't match very well with them. They are a very good team. Pronger is criticized for playing crappy in the regular season and then turning it on at the end/playoffs.
Just saying...lots of pundits were saying they would easily lead the East and were top 3 Cup favorites, etc, etc.
Not really the case.

Giroux had moments of brilliance on the 1st line, but for the most part seemed lost.
Maybe he needs another game to develop that chemistry? Him or Laich...though that depletes our 2nd line.

@capsfan75--we were at the Devils Islanders game this afternoon. It wasn't a blowout until the third period. That Brodeur is neat and economical in his movements--can see why he's legendary. The Islanders were very much into the game until their total defensive collapse and the goals came in quick succession.
