Tonight's lineup: Caps at 'Canes

As I reported earlier, Semyon Varlamov (13-3-3, 2.57 goals against average, .911 save percentage) will face fellow rookie Justin Peters (4-2-0, 2.35, .923) at RBC Center.

Not much on the line tonight -- the Caps lead the 'Canes in the Southeast by 39 points -- but these rivals really don't like each other, so it's got the potential to be entertaining.

The rest of the Alex Ovechkin-less combos are the same, too. But just in case you missed them, here they are again:

Forwards
Fleischmann-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Belanger-Semin
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Bradley-Steckel-Walker
Out: Ovechkin, Gordon (back) and Laing

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Corvo
Morrisonn-Carlson
Out: Erskine and Sloan

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

Check back later for more.

I like the Lines - and the scoring is spread out.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 18, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Just saw an incredible graphic on CSN--even without Ovi's goals this season, the Caps would still lead the NHL with 229 goals scored, while Vancouver would be second with 227. WOW!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 18, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

I want Flash to get one on that top line.

Sure hope Varly has a good one.

Looking forward to seeing what should be the last of that 3rd line, as constructed.

GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!

I love BB putting Walker in against his old mates. I think he will have something to prove and look for a lot of action on the 4th line

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 18, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

The other intereseting stat they showed is that Flash is goal a game when Ovi is out: 9 goals in 9 games.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

Don't look now - but if the season ended right now and both the Caps and Pens win in the first round - they would meet again in the second round. I'm sure the Pens have something going on (scheduled) in their building for what would be Game #3 of second round (they always do) and the Caps would again have to make a schedule change to accomodate the Pens. If the Pens pull this crap again, GMGM should refuse.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 18, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

wow - based on that shot it looks as if it is a lot darker outside in NC than it is here at this hour - how can that be?

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 18, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are not one man... they are machines.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 18, 2010 7:10 PM | Report abuse

anybody else think the staal boys are a little on the homely side?

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 18, 2010 7:10 PM | Report abuse

capt_kirk, I just wish the Staal brothers' hockey skills were just as homely.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 18, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

@ ccCapsfan

That could be because Flash is OV's replacement on that line. The gameplan is the same and its probably a treat for Flash to play with the best passer Backstrom.

Cooke just lost a fight to Thornton of the Bruins, seconds after going on the ice for the first time in the game- how many more Bruins will go after Cooke tonight?

Depends on the score if Boston is down two or more in the third they will go after him every shift on the ice. If it is still a close game maybe just one more.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 18, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

The ruling on ice killed any chance of that being a goal

...and the re-signing of BMo and Belanger will depend a lot on playoff performance methinks.

17 hits by the Canes in the first, vs our 8. Lets see how the physical this game will be.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 18, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Good to see Wisniewski got 8 games for the idiotic hit on Seabrook last night.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

man you think the canes are overcompensating justa touch defensively here? Guess these delusional sad sacks think they have a playoff shot. No Gleason,no shot.Get real and get yourself a decent draft pick already. Too bad Caps couldnt play against the pylons of Brian,Mccabe and Allen more often..damn that was entertaining.

Posted by: Todgak | March 18, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone else notice that Locker said that Corvo was a shutdown defenseman with Carolina and was of their stars in the run to the Eastern finals last year? Doesn't sound like someone you'd call a winger defenseman or whatever people have called him today.

And, if you get the puck on your stick (forehand or backhand) with time and space 10 feet from the blue line, the puck has to be cleared 10 out of 10 times, especially when it's a 5-on-3. We deserved to get burned after Bradley couldn't clear it.

i lovee it!! hope it happens! fans on Canes Country blog are like "flippin Corvo?" ahahahahaha

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

The Crow is flying high tonight. The name Corvo is Italian for crow. Cuervo is the Spanish equivalent.

Tomorrow is St. Joseph's Day. Corvo is doing his magic a day early since the Caps don't play hockey tomorrow.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

These two games may also have the added benefit of giving Green and Corvo some more playing time together on the PP.

IMO, I think if the Caps have the lead with less than 10 minutes in the playoffs and they get a PP they should move Ovie down low and put Corvo and Green at the points.

The PP would still be very dangerous but I would feel more comfortable with 2 defenseman at the points at that time in a game.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

@ ccCapsfan

I am not sure about that. Until that one play he had been great and helped almost kill off almost 2 minutes of 5 on 3 and has been strong all night. Would you say Backstrom is playing his way out of the first line center because he had the turnover that kept it in the zone.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 18, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Backstrom and Knuble's ice time from the shift before the last one.

It seemed like they were out there way too much time.

At the end of that shift, Knuble commits a bad penalty.

On Backstrom's next shift, he commits a bad turnover.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

@icehammer97 and rachel216: He has played well tonight but in BB's world goalies can't make mistakes with the game on the line. That one by Varly with a 2-1 lead in a game that seemed under control was a bad one. If he had been playing at a Backstrom level for the last 2 months, we wouldn't be having this conversation. So, no, I don't think the one bad play by Nicky somehow invalidates all his greatness.

Pretty lousy game from Green and Varly. I'll take the point on the road.

I've been saying it for a month, and it only becomes clearer with each game: Theo is our playoff goalie.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 18, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Can we call Braden Holtby up already? Theo is definitely our #1 goalie. Varly has no endurance what so ever. He's great the first two periods and then ........

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Our 4-on-4 has been much better recently.

The problem there was another long shift and then a massive defensive breakdown.

We outplayed them for the large part in OT and 3 golden scoring chances.

Who is responsible for these overextended shifts?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Nice non call trip on Backy

Posted by: ralCapsFan | March 18, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Bad on Green, Schultz and Varly. Rough game for Greenie. Very bad coverage there. He should not be able to step around like that and get wide open. WHat were 55 and 52 doing?!!! UGHHHH and that was a pretty SOFT goal, sorry. Gotta tell it like it is. Varly was strong but got weak toward the end, that's disturbing. He needs better conditioning.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: washcaps | March 18, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | March 18, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Bottom line:

Varly cannot be relied to close the door. He is a liability. Neuvirth should be recalled and back up Theodore during the playoffs.

Posted by: hmcknelly | March 18, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

We have too many massive defensive breakdowns. We'll play so good for about 55 minutes but keep having brain farts. But the only way we could have won this game is to have a goalie good enough to steal games which Varly can't do at the present time.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Green was dusted on that final breakaway. Could use less aggressive Dmen on the 4v4s.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 18, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

@Capsfan75: I agree that his pattern since he's come back is to suck in the third period. It does seem like an endurance problem - either physically or mentally. Of course, that could mean he just needs more games. But, time is running out.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | March 18, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Chimera missed on wayyy too many of his opportunities, so did Flash. Eric Fehr is awesome though.

Was close to saying Varly is back to normal Varly but he clearly still has things to sort out. He's just not quite there yet. Normal Varly doesn't give up leaky goals that dribble into the net like that. It's Theo's job to lose.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

The biggest culprit on that goal was not Varlamov.

Sure, he could've stopped all of Carolina's last 3 goals but there was plenty of blame to go around beyond Varlamov.

Backstrom and Knuble's long shift when it was 2 to 1.

Backstrom's giveaway.

Corvo getting caught pinching on that breakaway.

That total meltdown in front of the net on the OT goal.

Varlamov should've stopped a couple more but he was no worse than some of the players in front of him.

Theo is obviously our #1 but there is no telling what he would've been able to faced with similar breakdowns in front of him.

Varlamov did make a few big saves, including in OT.

Boudreau should probably get his share of blame for putting Green out there with Corvo during that 4-on-4 in regulation.

What a shocker that two pinch-happy defensemen that barely play together get out of sync and let a man get behind them!

But like Locker says, you need to stop the ones that you need to stop. He did make some great stops but I would've loved to see him stop that Whitney shot.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Theo's positioning is much better than Varly's. He would have stopped at least the third goal. Varly relies on his athleticism but he seems to only be at 80% since coming back. He'll get better but this is Theo's year.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 18, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

the only 4x4 in the playoffs is from matching minors - they're not good - but i'm not worried

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 18, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Varly needs to go to the AHL for a week or two. Theo wins close games and Varly loses them now. Varly needs a few wins under his belt to get his confidence back. He plays way back in the goal and his glove is too low and he goes into the butterfly too soon giving up too much room up top. It's like the second coming of Jim Carey.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 18, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

After the way we melted down in the 3rd period, I feel lucky that we got a loser's point.

Long shifts, bad giveaways, subpar goaltending, questionable coaching moves, etc...

Two pretty good periods of hockey followed by a meltdown in the 3rd period.

The things we did in the latter half of that 3rd period are just about textbook as far as how to lose a road game.

It would have been nice to pull off the win and we had our chances in OT to do that but we payed for our mistakes. Learn from it and move on to the next game.

At least we got a point thanks to Fehr. Let's take the frustration out on TB!

Theo seems to get stronger as the game goes on, where as Varly goes the opposite way. Like Locker said, (wow I love Locker tonight) he just doesn't look the way he did before his injury, there's something missing. I guess it's expected but it's been a while now. Hasn't he had enough practice to get back to where he was?

Question for you smart folks: Does BB keep putting him out there to try to get him right or is Varly running out of time to show BB he deserves the #1 job?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Question:

Do you feel confident with Varly backing up Theodore during the playoffs?

I certainly don't. We are running of time for Varly to improve his game.

I still feel we will do well in the playoffs but I don't like this chink in the team's armor.

I agree with sending down Varly to Hershey and recalling Neuvirth - for a few games anyway to allow Varly to just play in a pressure-free environment. This will hopefully allow Varly to regain his confidence and with improved concentration improve his overall game.

That Corvo and Green breakdown during the 4-on-4 late in 3rd was one of the worst I've seen this season.

It looked to me like Corvo was most reponsible but I need to see the replay.

He left his man and got caught pinching up the middle on a puck that he had no chance to win from my I recall of the play.

He made a similarly horrible pinch a few games ago on the opposing blueline and got burned for it.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Green was the most to blame for the 3rd goal. He was the last defenseman andhe pinched below the top of the circles. If he statys back it is a slower rush up the ice for a 2 on 1 allowing a Caps player to possibly get back.

Green was also to blame for the 4th goal. Thank god that OT in the playoffs is 5-on-5.

If the Caps are leading in the 3rd period of a playoff game and a 2 minute 4-on-4 situation arises I think they really need to think about not playing Green for those 2 minutes.

Corvo did some pinching but he mostly did it when a forward was circling back to the blue line to cover.

I think Green just can't resist the temptation of the open ice no matter what the score or time of game is.

I personally think that is and will continue to be Green's biggest flaw. He has no concept of time and score and how to alter his game and choices considering the time and score.

Despite scoring 2 goals, I'd give Corvo a D+ or a C- in this game if I correctly saw what happened on Carolina's 3rd goal.

Green gets about the same grade.

Make too many of these kinds of mistakes in the playoffs and...

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Just Frustrating to have come back to tie things up and then we lose it in OT on a soft shot from between the circles....Varly should pick up his game, and better soon or else. He just hasn't been the same since his injury. Green should have at least stepped in front of Whitney on that shot. I understand that he was looking for Whitney to pass, or didn't want to screen Varly, but anyone in the NHL who is that close will always take that shot! Especially in OT!

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | March 18, 2010 9:57 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS1

I won't necessarily refer to Varly as another Jim Carey. Carey had melted down in the playoffs and was never the save. I don't think injury was a factor.

While, after a slow start, Varly was looking great in goal and, since the injury, has not been the same. It seems that he just doesn't have the endurance to play well for 3 periods at the present time.

Bringing up Neuvy isn't the answer at the moment either as he's been struggling at Hershey since his own injury (against Montreal).

Do we sign Theo up for another season? Or do we hope the kids battle it out and pray that they recover from their injuries and regain their form. (And let Holtby battle it out with them.) We know that Holtby has endurance and can do back to backs. He also does not have NHL experience or "big playoff game" experience so he can't really do it for the Caps yet.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Positives for the night:

-Caps get a point
-Fehr is clutch
-The much maligned Corvo scored 2 big goals
-no points for Crosby
-Ovi's back next game

As for the OT goal, I blame Backstrom. He took himself out of the play to 1)draw a penalty then 2)retaliate when the penalty wasn't called. Green may have been out of position and Varly probably should have made the save, but that was inexcusable.

Posted by: ablake70 | March 18, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Wait, Capt-Kirk, he played like the way he's playing right now? Varly was a brick wall with a 2.12 gaa before his injury. His gaa is going up.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 18, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

@Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I think you have it figured out -- on Varly. Give the kid some chances before the year's out. And hopefully have it back in time for the playoffs so he can be the backup.

(I'm trying to remember when Varly was called up for good last year.) I recall that he was injured for awhile in Hershey and that Neuvy was with us in early-mid March.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

I still think the turning point in this game was that extra long shift Backstrom and Knuble took when we were up 2 to 1.

It was a great shift but when you are up by a goal late in the 3rd period on the road, the last thing you want to do is get caught out there on too long of a shift.

Knuble takes a bad offensive zone penalty, probably due to fatigue and not thinking clearly.

On Backstrom's next shift, he commits a bad defensive zone turnover, possibly in some way tied to his long previous shift.

It wall seemed to go downhill at that point.

Varlamov had opportunities to make up for some mistakes and didn't come through but I think that overextended shift by Backstrom and Knuble was the beginning of the meltdown.

I haven't seen their actual ice time on that shift so my whole premise may be invalid but it definitely looked like a shift to me.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

@MReilly9

Except that Neuvy is not playing well either. He was pulled during his last start. He also hasn't been the same since getting hurt. (Although he didn't miss as much time as Varly.)

Or should we call up Holtby to be the backup? Or would the organization be better served by having him be one of the goalies for the Bears' Calder Cup run?

Here we sand on the cusp of getting to The Cup with the best overall talent in team history but to win The Cup so, so, many things have to go right and alot of luck is needed. With such gapping holes in our game, other teams are looking more like to go all the way.

Either Theo has to play like his years in Montreal come playoffs, which is a fantasy or Varly steps it up. Either way, it is looking like a 2 round postseason if things don't change.

I'm thinking we win The Cup in a few years if, if, Holtby pans out as reliable and our young guns get much more seasoned.

I agree with you about Semin generally getting too much criticism and being held to a double standard.

That especially bothered me after the Chicago game.

In my opinion, Semin had been our best forward along with Fehr and Laich coming out of the break.

Backstrom was great recently but he and Ovechkin had a few off games while Semin came out playing his tail off in all 3 zones.

I actually thought Semin was off in this game but has still been one of our best forwards since the break, regardless of his numbers.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS: Well why didn't they just lay a red carpet out and invite Whitney to blast that shot in OT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME????

Mike Green - nothing but a liability tonight and that third goal was on him for not staying back when three guys were deep and he pinched. And of course he and Schultz were out there for the game winner. He needs to find his defensive game.

Resiliency - yea yea they got the point so what. But they pissed away another in OT. Varly made big stops and was hung out to dry in some instances but he's got to work on bailing his team out too. Cracks are gonna happen. I think he'll be fine.

The guys started wandering around a bit in the third and the second goal burned them. Gotta get the puck out.

Oh well - what a crapper. Need a better effort in Tampa on Sunday.

I agree that some of our weaknesses are the worst kind to have in the playoffs.

At the same time, every team has flaws that we don't see as clearly because we mostly watch and scrutinize our team.

If you read comments by fans of every last team, from Chicago to San Jose to Pittsburgh to New Jersey and so on, you'll find the same doom and gloom attitudes.

A fan's own team's weaknesses are always magnified over those of other teams.

That 3rd goal was NOT Corvo's fault. Watch again, Corvo went in as Belanger cycled back to cover the point as both were suppose to do. Green was too far in on his side and as the puck was bouncing around in the center Belanger made a poor play and went in after the puck.

In 4-on-4 situations forwards and defenseman switch positions often. Belanger and Corvo executed that well but Belanger made a mistake going for the puck, especially considering Green was too far in on his point.

It was fehr-ly similar to the late goal in Montreal that got us into OT except that he beat the goalie cleanly this time.

Carolina was so close to getting the puck out of the zone, too. Whoever it was that reached out there stick and contributed to the defenseman coughing up the puck deserves as much or more credit than Fehr.

Gustafsson, Mitchell practice with Hershey Bears
By TIM LEONE, The Patriot-News
March 18, 2010, 11:47AM

Newly arrived forwards Anton Gustafsson and Garrett Mitchell participated in a small optional skate held by the Hershey Bears Thursday at Hersheypark Arena.

“I think he’s a highly skilled player," Bears head coach Mark French said of Washington Capitals first-rounder Gustafsson. "He’s been off for about a week and a half now. The first part of what we want to do here is get him the ability to be back in games and then go from there and see if we can get him into some games.

“Garrett is more of a situation where it’s a good window for him to see professional hockey, especially at the American Hockey League level.”

Said Gustafsson: ““I haven’t been on the ice. It was a tough skate for me. I’m here to get in good shape.”

Boyd Kane, Patrick McNeill, Zach Miskovic and Dylan Yeo also participated in the workout, along with goalies Michal Neuvirth and Jason Bacashihua. French said Neuvirth is scheduled to start Friday against Albany.

McNeill (upper body) has been cleared for contact, but French said the plan is to still keep him out of the lineup this weekend.

Neuvirth's 4-month-old shar-pei puppy visited practice.

By the way, I didn't check out much of yesterday's thread but I think you could make a good argument that Seabrook's hit on Perry was boarding.

Perry's lower body made it a hit from the side but Seabrooks hit him in the numbers head first into the boards.

Wisniewski's hit was worse and I'm sorry that Seabrook got clocked like that but again, Seabrooks' hit looked like boarding from my vantage point.

What is the latest on that situation? Were there any fines/suspensions assessed to either player?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I just saw that Wisniewski got 8 games.

Did Seabrook get anything for his hit on Perry?

Why wasn't that considered boarding?

I understand he didn't get a penalty on the play but officials miss plays during the game. A bad hit can be reviewed and punished afterword, right?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Sure guys and gals, but our weaknesses are serious enough (I know I'm a fan with a microscope) that WINNING The Cup is far from close. Again so, so, many things are needed to go all the way and such inconsistencies are more magnified deeper in the playoffs. I just hope we shore them up.

On a brighter note, seeing Joe Sacco and Steve Konowalchuk enjoying coaching success in Denver is pleasing.

Based on which teams have the best combination of offense, defense, and goal tending, for a Stanley Cup run, the "best" team in the Eastern Conference would be the NJ Devils. And the Western Conference winner would be Vancouver.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 18, 2010 10:42 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao: To my eyes, the Seabrook hit was shoulder to shoulder. Perry was hit into the boards but that by itself doesn't make it boarding. FYI, the refs and Colon apparently agree. Wisniewski went after Seabrook who was not in the play, jumped up and hit him with a forearm to the face, thereby knocking him briefly unconscious. In the context of the discussions about head hits and unnecessarily violent hits with intent to injure, Wisniewski is lucky he got only 8.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 10:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching Hawks/Kings. The Kings announcers talking about the Wisniewski hit: it was not a hockey play, he left his position, he left his feet, it was retaliatory.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Then, why did his body rotate counter-clockwise and head-first into the boards?

And if you are saying that Campbell and the refs agree that it was a clean play, does that mean that Adams hit from behind on Ovechkin was a clean play? Or Brouwer's on Semin?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

That is what concerns me.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | March 18, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Here's the hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy7vacK6Dzg

It certainly looks like Seabrook hits him in the back.

Perry's lower body would make a hit from the side but his upper body was facing away from Seabrook.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:57 PM | Report abuse

You can actually see Seabrook making contact with the zero in Perry's #10.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 18, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

I think it had to do with angle of attack as it were. It was a very hard hit and I think it was borderline as to whether it was legal. I agree that the refs and Colon have gotten some of these spectacularly wrong. I'm not sure this is one of them. It's hard to know how to think about these right now because the NHL has been all over the place. I think it would be reasonable to say that the ref missed a 2 minute penalty, but I don't see anything that should result in a suspension.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 18, 2010 11:02 PM | Report abuse

I didn't think that Seabrook should necessarily get a suspension but I did think it deserved a boarding major.

I don't know the exact rule but he clearly hits Perry on the zero on his back.

Again, Perry was spinning and if you just look at the lower body, it was a hit from the side.

However, his upper body was clearly facing away from Seabrook and he appeared to be playing the puck and not trying to avoid the hit.

In Ovechkin's case, it looked like he was expecting to catch Campbell from the side as he completed his turn much like Seabrook was intending to catch Perry from the side.

If Perry gets injured or knocked unconscious, would there have been a boarding major and a suspension/fine?

If you think that would be the case, then the fact that Perry got luck and didn't get injured was the deciding factor and that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Adams' hit on Ovechkin was more from behind and Ovechkin was in an even more vulnerable position than was Campbell but there was no penalty and no apparent review of the play.

It all fails to add up in my mind.

Yes, I did say that Buffalo or NJ would have the best chance of advancing to the SC from our conference, if based on the best combination of defense, offense, and goal tending. However, and it's a very big however, teams that screw around during the last part of the season also tend not to advance. New Jersey and Buffalo have not exactly set the world on fire as of late. Both teams are 5-4-1 apiece. (Playing .500, if not for the Bettman points.)

Ottawa has basically imploded. Washington and Pittsburgh are both fairly consistent, have won 6 out of 10 and got some Bettman points.

Montreal is hot but I frankly don't think they're that good of a team.

@ BernieWolfeFan, CapsFan75

No time to go into panic mode. This team is still #1 overall. Of course there is room for improvement, but I think it has little to do with personnel. We could have Miller, Bryzgalov, or Brodeur in goal and I don't think it would make a difference. It seems to me that this team is too focused on offense and relying on skill. When you have guys like Erskine pinching in close games, you are off course. They have time to fix this before the postseason.
