Tonight's lineup: Caps at 'Canes

Coach Bruce Boudreau does not appear to have made any changes to his lineup. So things should look familiar on what could be a big night for the Caps.

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Chimera-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Belanger-Fehr
Laing-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Sloan-Green
Poti-Corvo
Erskine-Carlson

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

I'll have more later.

Do it!

I understand resting guys but resting two on the same night and we are playing a goalie who has not been strong the last few games. To me it feels like we might have a let down tonight after the big win last night.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 25, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

I liked that Chimera-Morrison-Semin line from last night. Morrison has been playing his heart out the past few weeks. Anyone think that this will be Varly's last start before the playoffs? I think it should be...

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 25, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

ice, I'm not usually this optimistic, but for some reason I think Varly will be strong tonight. And I'm glad Laing is playing again tonight. He won't get many (if any) more chances this season. GO CAPS!!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 25, 2010 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Ted owning the Phonebooth = nice

The Caps playing for home ice advantage throughout the eastern playoffs = sweet

Come on Varly, play brave, stand tall, and keep up that glove hand!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

I really hope Varly plays well tonight.

Could be an ugly one tonight.

I was afraid of a letdown tonight after last night. And the same ol, same ol -- taking penalties. The Caps have to give up this really bad habit.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Is anyone else unimpressed with the Poti-Corvo d-pairing? (I haven't logged on in a while so I don't know if everyone has already been talking about it or not.)

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 25, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Good question @ instinct - anyone know where we can find this game online?

C'mon Varly, you can do it buddy - just need to get that confidence back a little.

I like Belanger and Flash together - but I'd love to see Semin on that line, they'd do damage.

Posted by: govtimbo | March 25, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

I am impressed by how many more shots the Caps are blocking

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Just bad play by Caps all-around. Wake up call?

Posted by: cbs75 | March 25, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Well the Caps are going to have to block more shots cuz Varly is swiss cheese at this point -- anyone else getting that Jim Carey feeling?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Varly is fighting the puck hard tonight. Huge rebounds. Not good.

Posted by: Aldred15 | March 25, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

This could be over quick if we don't wake up... defense not helping varly one bit..

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Capitals are playing like they were a resident in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina came thru...

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | March 25, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Methinks that Varly has not received the teams best effort so far.

WHICH SUCKS!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 25, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Fehr completely failed to backcheck after letting the puck bounce over his stick. That looked like his guy that scored the 2nd goal.

Varlamov shouldn't be getting the majority of the blame.

Carolina is completely outworking and outexecuting the Capitals.

Varlamov has made a couple of big saves or it could be 3 or 4 to nothing.

excellent puck possession by the Belanger line, but the Canes were deflecting everything that came inside!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 25, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Watching the game, sorry the Caps have the puck more and are cycling well. The goals would be routine for Theo

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:33 PM

I don't know how anybody watching the game could make this statement.

The first effective cycle the Caps got going was after the commercial break when it was already 2-0.

From the very first shift of the game, we were turning pucks over and getting outskated and outworked by Carolina.

Carolina had multiple odd-man rushes and scoring opportunities early in the game and the ice was clearly tilted in their favor.

Varlamov probably made some mistakes but he was screened on the first goal and Steckel was 20-feet from the shooter putting no pressure on him.

On the 2nd goal, the puck bounced over Fehr's stick and he just stood there and watched the play instead of backchecking. His guy ended up scoring on a deflection.

All teams have games like this but your analysis about routine saves and the Caps having the majority of possession is just beyond unbelievable to me. It was completely the opposite in both cases.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 25, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Shots are 13-13, and the Caps are cycling well. Varly is not up to snuff, sorry. He has had many games to prove that he can get his game back. He is getting worse, not better. I think the Caps may need to think hard about resigning Theo. I know the Caps need to resign Backis, Fehr, and Flash.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Tonight seems to be a recipe for disaster.

1) Day after emotional win against arch rival

2) We are playing our backup defensemen

3) We are playing our backup goal tender

The team, as a whole, is not looking too good. Okay, we can't win them all, but I'd be nervous if Carolina someone managed to get the 8th seed this year. (Probably won't happen, however.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 25, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

well that period was a big fail.

Posted by: cbs75

Yeah pretty much.

JIMALLCAPS1: The defense certainly didn't help Varly but I agree that he still isn't playing with much confidence. Fighting the puck and looking kind of timid.

caraveli: Legace ain't that great. And a guy scores their first goal against us. Seems to happen a lot against us.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Stop making the excuse of Varly was screened. That 2nd goal was totally routine. Varly is really off his game -- butterfly too early, weak glove hand (drops it too), backing into the goal, and terrible rebound control. Varly before the injury was very good, but now his bad habits of over-relying on his athleticism is back. He is NOT technically sounds any longer.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Several of those shots came later in the period after it was 2-0.

I have no problem with your general statement about Varlamov's game but to say that those were routine saves and that the time of possession was equal in the first period, particularly at the time of your post, is beyond fathomable to me.

Carolina was dominating us for the first 10 minutes and I bet the scoring chances were about 6-1 at the time of your post.

After the commercial break when it was 2-0, the Belanger line established a good cycle and it looked like Boudreau had chewed into the team.

On the 1st goal, Steckel was 20-feet from the shooter and provided one of 2 or 3 screens on Varlamov.

The 2nd goal was a deflection and Fehr completely failed to backcheck after the puck bounced over his stick.

From the first shift of the game, Ovechkin was turning the puck over or letting Cane players skate right around him.

Varlamov might have been able to position himself better on the 1st goal but that's about it. He made a number of big saves that kept it to only a 2-goal deficit.

95% of the poor performance in the 1st period is on the shoulders of players not named Varlamov.

We were getting outskated, outworked and outexecuted at the time of your post.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 25, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

laing leading the team in shots = team in trouble
he also leads in missed shots so far

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 25, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

I agree about Varlamov's game not being good right now, in general.

Having said that, the team played horribly in front of him throughout most of the 1st period and were more responsible than him for the score.

Is he responsbile for us not scoring, too, or taking bad penalties?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 25, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

I predict the Capitals will dominate the second period and score three goals.

Sometimes the first period the day after a game is a little rough. I wouldn't worry about it much.

I'm forced to watch the Carolina feed down here in San Antonio with Time Warner Cable.

Games like this really make me appreciate Joe Beninati, and even Craig. These Carolina broadcasters are pretty much personality-less, and that's one thing you can't say about Joe and Craig.

I'm getting a little frustrated with Ovechkin not scoring goals. Crosby hasn't scored in like forever, and Ovechkin should've taken the goals-scoring lead by now.

Posted by: youaresquishy | March 25, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Plus Ovechkin lost the points lead the other day. Ovechkin needs to produce here in period 3. He looks tired or something.

Posted by: youaresquishy | March 25, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

2nd period was better than the first. they'll need to take it up 3 or 4 notches in the 3rd

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

If OV scores and the Caps win, awesome, but even OV is much more concerned with wins than his own points

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

@youaresquishy

I'm frustrated with Ovi not scoring goals either. Last goal by Ovi was Saturday.

Come on, Ovi. Score. Or the writers will probably vote for Henrik Sedin for the Hart. (I figure they won't necessarily vote for Miller.)

Stanley Cup > Hart

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

I just saw a banner hanging in the Carolina building for Staal with the Vancouver games logo. That is sort of like the Mystics with their attendance banners.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 25, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS1

Yes, the Stanley Cup is greater than the Hart. But the Hart would be nice too.

(Okay, if I have to choose, I would choose the Cup.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 25, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

I know it is perverse but I want Ovie to be at the top of the goal scorers' list(i.e. beat Cindy) more than I want us to win. Is this sick? When he is on fire, though, he pulls the team with him. I don't know, maybe he has not completely recovered yet.

If we follow our typical pattern we should come out in the third period roaring and not allowing Carolina to catch their breath. We'll see.

My 3-goal prediction for period 2 was wrong, and I am sorry about that. I am drunk on chianti. At least Varly allowed no more, which is what I was afraid of.

If the Capitals can't score 2 goals in a gmae against Carolina though, they definitely deserve to take one in the loss column.

Let's go Caps!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: youaresquishy | March 25, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

True, Hart for OV to be icing on the Stanley Cup cake. What I love is that OV as Captain is team leader, not just the best player on the team. His game is so more well rounded since taking the C. If Crybaby gets the Richard and Hart while OV is holding the Cup over his head laughing like Messier, bring it on.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 25, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Jeez...Thank you Corvo!

I thought that was Corvo....WITH THE D!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 25, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

I think any excuse to not make Ovechkin the only player besides Gretzky and Orr to win a third consecutive Hart Trophy will suffice for the voters. I think for Ovechkin to win a third he will have to not only get the most goals and the most points, but will have to be the best in both by a decisive margin (even though, on a per game basis and per minute basis, he's having his best season ever). Politics. Whatever.

I would like to see a Presidents' Trophy AND a Stanley Cup more than I'd like to see Ovechkin win any individual award. But I would definitely love to see Ovechkin getting a third straight MVP.

I'm glad that Carolina is far enough behind the Bruins and Rangers where they probably will not get 8th seed. Otherwise, I'd fear for the Caps ability to make it past Round 1. They can't take season series from Carolina to save their lives.

Gotta give credit to Legace though. He was pretty good tonight. You're not always going to score 4 goals every night. Varly was good enough to win but it's just unfortunate. There were some pretty pathetic attempts in the shootout...

You are right; seeds in the playoffs matter very little days. The teams that fight their way in are very dangerous as long as they haven't burned themselves out like the Caps two years ago.

Caps could clinch the East before they even play their next game. If Buffalo and New Jersey each lose in their next game, the Caps clinch. And it doesn't matter if it's regulation or OT - they each need every possible point to catch the Caps.

What is it about the Caps in making people like Manny Legace look like Vezina trophy winners?

Better luck on Sunday (when I'm going to the game).

Okay Caps, look good for the rest of the regular season.

And, after that, winning record for each of the next 4 series.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 25, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse

The Hurricanes blocked 35 shots to our 13.

Ovechkin was credited with 0 hits but I seem to remember at least one.

Ovechkin had an awful first period but picked up his play in the second half of the game.

The Hurricanes were fantastic with their sticks in front of their net. If they weren't so active with their sticks and skating so well, we probably score 4 or 5 goals in regulation.

Corvo made a huge deflection on Cole early in the 3rd period on a shot that trickled through Varlamov. I have no idea how the shooter got so open in front of the net. We didn't have the same sense of urgency in front of our goalie as Carolina had in front of Legace.

Pothier and McBain alone blocked as many shots as our entire team.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 25, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Varly was very good and, again, much improved. He had a 93+% save ratio. You could see his struggle with his confidence in the beginning. BB was so wise not to pull him. Once his confidence was built with each successive save, he got better and better and reminded me of his old self. If he is played, he will be back to his A game in no time.

I am more worried about Ovie. He doesn't seem in top form lately or he has just had rotten luck.

Posted by: caraveli | March 25, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

Should we have hung onto Brian Pothier? Or did he just really need a new start somewhere else? After his concussion issues, the Caps didn't really want to play him for large numbers of minutes. While with Carolina, he's now getting them.

@youaresquishy

Normally, the voters would not have had trouble giving Ovi his 3rd straight MVP but given the fact he's been suspended twice would make many writers think twice about voting for him unless he were leading in goals and/or points.

There is the chance he could win since the non-Ovi voters would be splitting votes among Ryan Miller, Bryz, Sedin, and Crosby. (If they agreed on an alternative to Ovi, then that alternative person would win.)

How does MVP voting work anyway? Do writers vote for 10 players, ranked in order from 1 to 10, and certain number of points being assigned, with the point totals being totaled up.

"Carolina better not make the playoffs. DO NOT want to see them. We'd be going to OT every single game."
====================================
The Capitals can actually control Carolina's destiny for the playoffs because the Caps play Boston and Atlanta each two more times down the stretch. Since points are at such premium for these "desperate" teams, it is realistic for the Caps to purposely lose at least one of each game to Boston or Atlanta in order to prevent Carolina from reaching the Playoffs. The Capitals just do not play well against Carolina, especially now with Pothier in their line up, and it just sets up way too well for an upset if Carolina were to meet the Capitals in the first round. I am just saying this to "Piss Off" the Carolina fans..hehe!

Posted by: JohnWWW | March 25, 2010 10:44 PM | Report abuse

I actually fear playing Stamkos nowadays more than Crosby. As long as Crosby isn't left open, he won't produce as much. Stamkos on the other hand is just a freak of nature!

Posted by: hockeynightincanada | March 25, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

@JohnWWW

I think everything would have to go right for Carolina for them to make 8th seed. Given that they're 7 points behind Boston and have to leap frog over 3 teams in their division, along with the Rangers.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 25, 2010 10:55 PM | Report abuse

I don't think that losing Pothier was a big loss as far as what he brought to the team on the ice but I'm just not sure that Corvo, alone, represents much of an upgrade over him, not even factoring in Osala and the 2nd round pick.

We can probably reacquire a 2nd round pick before the next draft and Osala may have had trouble cracking our lineup but, again, I'm not sure that that particular deal was worth it, especially when you factor in that Pothier was already familiar with our systems and that Corvo has stated more than once than he won't be 100% until next season.

Maybe McPhee sees Corvo as a long-term piece but, even in that case, he could've went after him in the offseason since Corvo will be a UFA.

While I'm not a fan of Stamkos, I would rather see him win the Goals title than Crosby. (I don't necessarily hate Stamkos -- I'm essentially neutral.)

I don't worry as much about Ovechkin putting up points as I do when I see him making sloppy and careless plays and ignoring his backchecking responsibilities.

I actually thought he was doing a lot of little things well coming out of the break despite not scoring a lot of points.

Recently, I've been seeing bad habits creep back into his game - risky cross-ice passes, bad giveaways, no defensive awareness, etc...

Pretend you are a free agent (whose a very good player and scores 35 goals per year). What team would you go to? Unless you go back to your current team, the choices, due to Cap space, are limited to the following:

Avalanche
Nashville
Atlanta
Tampa Bay
NY Islanders
Phoenix
Columbus
St Louis Blues

What team would you choose?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 25, 2010 11:48 PM | Report abuse

@CapsFan75: It depends on a lot of factors. Colorado has traditionally been considered an attractive place to play and it seems like a team that is starting to head in the right direction. St. Louis is a great sports town, although baseball is king. And they also seem like a young team on the move. Phoenix is neat place to live but not yet a good hockey town. To me, the others are non-starters.

Apparently I have confused you, allow me to decipher.
Varlamov was deeked from his jock by a poor 4th line player and the shooters, except for Backstrom, were stopped by Manny Legace, whom was waived from St Louis because he couldn’t stop a beach ball. I realize I may have hurt your delicate Capitals fan emotions prompting you to attack my supposed lack of mastery regarding the english language. However, I was simply calling like I saw the game. They sucked big time tonight.

wow, I didn't even think about that. Blocking shots doesn't seem to be one of the team's dominant areas. Schultz leads the Caps with 114 blocked shots but he barely breaks into the league top 50.
