Tonight's lineup: Caps at Canucks

Jose Theodore, who is 4-0-1 in his last four starts with 2.19 goals against average and a .927 save percentage, will get the nod for the Caps. Roberto Luongo, meantime, will be between the pipes for the Canucks.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look the same as Tuesday's:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Wilson-Fehr
Clark-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Poti
Erskine-Alzner

Goalies
Theodore
Neuvirth

Check back later for some postgame notes and quotes from soggy (but not snowy) Vancouver.

The last post said Laing and Gordo were ready to get back in the lineup... any word on when that will happen?

@capscoach

BB had changed it since OBS were the only productive people against Toronto last week. They were trying to get the second line jump started. (Well, they came close, but no cigar.)

Wilson goes back down, and you have to choose anther, maybe a D man? Make a trade? That's a good question

@JSchon

Who do you scratch to make room for Laing and Gordon?

The third line's been productive. I mean, you can't exactly scratch the guy who's tied for 2nd for our team lead in goals. Or Fehr with 8 goals and several assists. So that leaves the 4th line where we have Bradley, Steckel, and Clark.

Posted by: mrszilla | December 18, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

I think Gordon is redundant piece. He is Steckel with less offensive upside and Steckel is on the 4th line.

I do like Laing on the 4th line too.

Like I a couple of days ago, we do not have a 3rd line C that are equaled to the skill of Flash and Fehr, unless Wilson comes to play like he did in COL.

To head off the questions about the "poor HD", tonight's game is widescreen (not HD) on CSN-HD. See my posts on the previous game thread for an explanation.

Tomorrow's matchup in Edmonton will be on CSN Plus (or CSN Minus, as far as I'm concerned...)

So far Poti better than Bieska. E. Fehr so far really bringing the heat.

I am watching the TSN broadcast and it's nothing but Caps love. If Leonsis moved the franchise to Winnipeg or Quebec, it would be the biggest story in Canada since July 1st, 1867.

Lots of footage on Ovi giving autographs for crowds yesterday and today. Of course they interviewed Ovi at the break and he gave them, "For sure, I think mostly about this game, but can't help think about Olympics" quote.

The Canadians know all about Ovi's mom being Olympic champ and his love for the Games so he is popular for that.

Watching the game on TSN and during the first intermission they discussed the Canadian Olympic team. They showed their predicted line-up saying that they already know 90% of the players who will be on it.

Here's the interesting part. We all assume that Green will play, but according to them he might not make it. He's on the bubble along with Phaneuf, Doughty and a few others.

Aside from Green not making it the other 2 huge surprises to me are Phaneuf and Mike Richards. At the start of the season all those guys were locks, but I guess they played themselves off the team.

As for Greenie I'm texting Medvedev and Putin right now to see how quickly we can get him Russian citizenship.

Why didn't ShaMo play the man with the puck?

Posted by: eorr | December 18, 2009 11:37 PM | Report abuse

He had to make a choice btwn the two... if you go to the one with the puck he'll pass it and there will be no one covering the other guy OR you end up screening the goalie. it was a good fake, fooled shamo and theo

Posted by: mrszilla | December 18, 2009 11:39 PM | Report abuse

He just backed in to Theodore and then let him get him whor'd. I know he was covering the guy coming from the backside but he should attack the puck first and hopefully force a bad pass or block a shot. Not leave your goalie out to dry.

Posted by: eorr | December 18, 2009 11:39 PM | Report abuse

well we can all say one thing- this is not a boring game!

Posted by: mrszilla | December 18, 2009 11:40 PM | Report abuse

Green was involved in both of Vancouver's goals.

A careless pass led to the first one.

Then, he pinched with all the forwards up high on the second one. If he didn't score, an odd man rush the other way was practically guaranteed. Not a risk worth taking with a lead.

These kinds of mistakes may keep him off Team Canada.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 18, 2009 11:40 PM | Report abuse

BB needs to get Semin back on the first line in place of Knuble. Knuble has been useless tonight. Every time he gets the puck he fumbles it which has resulted in our 1st line not being able to keep possession. You can see Ovie and Backstrom are starting to get annoyed.

As far as the last goal, obviously lots of blame goes to Green there (should have curled back after the shot instead of trying to hit Van d-man in front of their net), but Theodore has to do better there. Mo took the pass away giving him the shooter and Theo got faked out of his skates.

Posted by: ranndino | December 18, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

Ok, well I will admit that I never played hockey but that seems stupid to me. I think you should challenge the puck and force the guy with it to do something other than waltz in and school your goalie.

Posted by: eorr | December 18, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

Shamo did a good job of playing the pass up until the end. He can't back up and give the guy room at the top of the crease. It was a nice move by the Vancouver guy, bit shamo could have played that better at the end.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | December 18, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

I just think he juked out Theo pretty good.

Posted by: JSchon | December 18, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

People need to stop pointing at Morrisonn and Theodore.

Both goals were largely Green's fault.

You can look at Schultz' skate on the first one but it was Green's terrible pass that led to the scoring opportunity in the first place.

You can look at Morrisonn or Theodore on the second goal but neither of them created the odd man rush in the first place. That was once again on Mike Green.

And his new name, when he plays with the Russians, will be Mikhail Davidovich Zelenkov, with the nickname of Misha.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 18, 2009 11:43 PM | Report abuse

You should play the guy without the puck cause if you play the guy with the puck the goalie has to stay until he passes. Therefore take out the extra and let the goalie play the man with the puck

Posted by: fatboy08 | December 18, 2009 11:43 PM | Report abuse

My guess is that Green's horrible performance through 2 periods tonight will probably put the nail in the coffin as far as any chance he may have had to sneak on to the Team Canada roster, regardless of what he does in the final period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 18, 2009 11:44 PM | Report abuse

@ eorr

As JSchon explained ShaMo did everything correctly, as taught. Playing the shooter is a bad idea because a cross ice pass results in a slam dunk. Raymond made a good move, but Theodore should have read the play better and come out to challenge him, maybe even go for a poke check. In any case, not Morisson's fault.

Posted by: ranndino | December 18, 2009 11:45 PM | Report abuse

The mistake on Canucks goal #2 was whoever was Caps RW on that shift. Since Green had moved up to attack (had a good shot on net), the RW was supposed to rotate back and help out ShaMo.

You'll, notice, just a few minutes earlier, Flash rotated back and made a super back-check.

The difference between those two plays and why Canucks scored on one and not the other was Flash covered and the RW later didn't.

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 18, 2009 11:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 18, 2009 11:49 PM | Report abuse

ranndino: Thank you, it has been explained several times. I am just saying if he doesn't give ground like the french against the blitzkreig and challenges the man with the puck he doesn't waltz in and deke theo out of his jock and he possibly causes a bad pass across ice and the guy doesn't have a slam dunk. I guess its 50-50 either way and I am sure people with more hockey knowledge than me know why it is taught to take backside cutter. I feel that neutralizing the immediate threat (the man with the puck) should be more important.

Posted by: mrszilla | December 18, 2009 11:51 PM | Report abuse

@ eorr

It's not stupid at all. On a play like that the shooter usually has few options and if the goalie is in a good position he has a good chance to save the shot. In this case Theodore stayed too deep in the net letting Raymond make a deke into the middle of the crease and fake him out. ShaMo played it correctly. Watch any 2-on-1 when the D plays the shooter. It results in a goal almost 100% of the time. A simple pass across and both the D and the goalie are toast with almost no chance to recover. It's a slam dunk.

@ tmac2yao

I really don't think that the people in charge of the Canadian team are making decisions on the basis of 1 game.

tominfl1 is right about the orders

from http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=510378

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau hit 'em out of the park on three specific topics during his interview with NHL.com Thursday.

The Contender -- You won't find anyone on the planet that will lobby harder for defenseman Mike Green to make the Canadian Olympic team than Boudreau, who is a staunch, staunch, staunch supporter of No. 52.

Boudreau even takes the blame for what many perceive to be Green's defensive lapses, which are why the high-scoring, puck-rushing blue-liner is still on Canada's bubble instead of being considered a lock to make the team.

"He's as responsible as he has to be," Boudreau said. "Sometimes people don't realize, but he's our only really rushing defenseman now that Brian Pothier is out, so I just say, 'Mike, just go. Go.' Sometimes he ends up looking back, but it's my fault because I'm telling him what to do."

Boudreau wasn't done …

"When he has to play defense, he plays defense," the coach continued. "He's on the first penalty-killing unit, the first power-play, he plays 25 minutes a game and he's a plus double-digit player. I don't know what else you can ask from him. If Mike Green was playing for the New Jersey Devils right now, you'd say what a tremendous defensive player he is. But, he's not playing for New Jersey because he's playing for a more up-tempo team that is asking him to play a more up-tempo style. He's doing what I'm asking."

I might have preferred the penalty to the penalty shot there... we're still shorthanded now.

Posted by: JSchon | December 19, 2009 12:23 AM | Report abuse

Maybe it's a bad idea against Vancouver, but I'd like to see Bruce try putting OV out for a shift on the PK just for confusion in a situation like this.

Posted by: Raber | December 19, 2009 12:23 AM | Report abuse

it's absolutely ridiculous that the best player on the team has to sit for 4 minutes while his team is down by a goal late in the third because he can't kill penalties.

Posted by: joek443 | December 19, 2009 12:24 AM | Report abuse

It looked like Semin had him beat he just couldnt elevate the shot.

Posted by: eorr | December 19, 2009 12:25 AM | Report abuse

@GregAnnapolis-I'm not surprised by the extra 2:00. I did see Poti yapping the ref following his cross-checking call.

@All-How about that save by Luongo on Semin's penalty shot?

It's going to take a great effort to pull this one out.

Except Vancouver's PP has been awesome (and almost scored again there). 4 on 4 gives OV the space he needs to be skating 1 on 2 instead of 1 on 3. What's our record in OT vs. our record in the shootout?

On the other side of things, I suppose Semin's a good person to have to take it (usually).

I'm ready for Boudreau to try a totally new cast of characters for the power play next time. The current group is incompetent.

Caps were grossly outplayed. What can you say? Good effort and intensity from the Canucks. Not much energy from the Caps. Need something better tomorrow night in Edmonton. Someone needs to explain to me why Poti got the double minor.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 19, 2009 12:36 AM | Report abuse

@Raber - You're right. I looked at the replay. Semin overskated the puck and never really got the shot he wanted. It shouldn't have been a penalty shot anyway.

@All - Good game. Vancouver defended and finished their checks all night long. Despite that, the Caps almost got the equalizer during that furious, final minute.

fehr- that we did, i do have to say i thought it was a good game though minus the pp.... i personally care a bit more about tomorrows game bc i have a friend in edmonton :)

but all in all i think the canucks played a strong game, thought we did too but like that deke we just got outplayed. still was an exciting game

Posted by: mrszilla | December 19, 2009 12:36 AM | Report abuse

I may have been wrong about the second goal but it often seems like Green is getting caught pinching. If our forwards can't read plays consistenly, maybe it's not worth it for Green to be so aggressive, particularly on the road with a lead.

The first goal did start with a lazy and casual pass from Green that got intercepted.

Vancouver owned us after the first period. They completely stifled our power play and were putting on a clinic on some of their forechecks.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 19, 2009 12:37 AM | Report abuse

Our PP was better when OV was out and it seemed like tonight OV was out there the full 2 min for each PP. Obviously we want him out there for part of the PP but shouldnt we give other guys a chance for the other half seeing as it did so well with him out?

Yeah, this was the second bad game in a row for Schultz. He's useless offensively, and he's been misplaying pucks like crazy. Not sure he's the right D pairing with Green.

Thanks for the clarification. Didn't get that. Had to watch the game online, and the stream kept being interrupted.

Posted by: CDon | December 19, 2009 12:42 AM | Report abuse

Well, I knew it. Theo gives 2-3 outstanding perforances a season, and the rest are split between mediocre and bad. His game against Colorado met his quota for good performances this quarter so what else did we expect? Another 85% -- 3 goals on 20 shots.

Our power play sucked and, though we were not bad, we were not that sharp. When my boy Ovie is kept without goals, shots or assists--the team is not on fire.

Hope we don't lose tomorrow. I bet BB puts Varly in goal.

That 2nd 2 min on Poti was total bull. Even the Canadian announcers on TSN said that the call was ridiculous and that the ref should be a little less sensitive, especially at the end of a tied game. Guess he didn't like Poti's gesture.

Boudreau could be clearly seen saying, "Nice f-ing job!" to the ref after they scored.

Semin had Luongo on that penalty shot, but just couldn't get it up over his pad.

Can't believe we didn't score in the last minute. Poti whiffed on a slam dunk pass, Semin shot it over the net, then Backie also whiffed on an attempted shot from the slot.

Fun game though.

@ eorr

Yeah, because in lacrosse the shooter has a lot more options because of the nature of the game (an wave the stick with the ball around all over tying the goalie in knots).

Have to give the Canucks their due tonight. They played well. Their checking job did as good a job on Ovie as I have seen all year.

Posted by: ranndino | December 19, 2009 12:46 AM | Report abuse

I'm not going to be the guy banging the drum for Theo, but let's remember the first goal allowed tonight was kicked in by Schultz, for all intents and purposes.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
What an absolute pathetic way to piss away two points tonight. This was inexcusable. You had two days off and had time to practice. Maybe they should practice less - kidding.

Powerplay - JUST AWFUL. You should know what adjustments to make. This is the worst the PP looked all season. That's a disgrace.

Tom Poti - first off if Beninati would get his head out of his ass we would've known why Poti had 4 mins in penalty time rather than trying to figure it out. Poti needs to shut his mouth and why was he the one getting the chance at that last minute tap in. Give me somebody else out on the ice in that position. Awful.

Dumb decisions with the puck: Semin trying to pass that puck in the final minute - RIP THE DAMN SHOT. Ovie in the second - stop trying to stick handle a million times and uncork that blast. Talk about brainfarts.

Schultz - he's been good lately but hey it was a case of bad luck but you have to corral that puck.

What a joke/trash/pathetic loss. They left two points on that ice. Now they need to ramp it up tomorrow - no easy task.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. This one sucks. Hurry up and drop the damn puck in Edmonton.

From Florida: I hope all of you stay safe up there during the storm. Looks like a white Christmas.

Yep, that's what happened. Poti got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in addition to his "regular" minor. As soon as Van got a 4 minute PP, I knew it was over for our boys.

Posted by: CDon

The Caps outplayed Vancouver the first period and we certainly outshot them. We just fizzled out and didn't seem nearly as coordinated and disciplined in our game as they did. But in the end Luongo was better than Theo and this made the difference in a close game. Disappointing.

Posted by: caraveli | December 19, 2009 12:51 AM | Report abuse

Yes, mad that the Caps blew two points they should have had, if they had only had a competent PP and didn't make so many other mistakes.

Must admit, I do not have confidence in their chances for tomorrow. They s*ck at back to backs.

Posted by: ranndino | December 19, 2009 12:54 AM | Report abuse

I can't really lay too much blame on Theo tonight looking at each goal individually, but he sure didn't have much to do other than fishing the puck out of his net those 3 times it went in. Luongo had more work and made some huge saves.

Maybe Green came back too soon from the Koci his and would have been better off sitting out today. I'm sure the swelling hasn't done much for his vision.

(It's the type of game a super star goalie might have been able to steal except Theo is not that.)

Actually Green was only -1 for the night. Our worst player in the Plus/Minus Department was Knuble, with a -2.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 19, 2009 1:09 AM | Report abuse

CapsFan75: I agree with the Green coming back too earlier comment. If you have to sit a game then do it. His eye looked nasty and there is no way he wasn't thinking about that hit during the game. I've played collision sports and whenever you take a hit like that it stays with you. The best way to get over it is get back out on the field/ice and start playing again, but if you got hurt from the hit then taking some time off and getting healthy is not a bad idea at all.

Posted by: eorr | December 19, 2009 1:10 AM | Report abuse

I was actually surprised to see both Green and Morrison back tonight. Boudreau earlier thought that ShaMo was doubtful. But then they both skated and were pronounced fine.

Green maybe should have taken a day off. Instead he (and Ovi) both skated uber minutes.

oh dont get me started, this entire team should just be traded in for some timber and practice pucks... or move the team to oklahoma to be the new oilers affiliate...clearly NOT top of the nhl caliber!

why is it that people have such a hard time admitting other teams are good?? could we have been better tonight? totally, but that doesnt mean dismantling the team and selling it off for parts. the canucks pk happened to be a beast tonight, what are you going to do.

chill, breath, move on, go to sleep!

I think that "times will be a changing" in the Caps lineup tomorrow. After a loss (and with guys ready to come back), that tends to happen.

Juice will take the place of someone. Any suggestions as to whose place he should take?

I'm guessing they'll give BG a conditioning stint at Hershey before putting him in a real NHL game. Unless Bruce really thinks they're better off with him than with Wilson (who didn't see much playing time in Period 3, if I remember correctly.)

Laing will probably be back soon. Except who will go out of the lineup?

The lines will be juggled. Knuble's been off, as of late, so he'll probably be moved down.

you are so right! geez- why does one loss make fans flip out? the caps aren't going to win every game this season. and the canucks had it going tonight.

Don't worry. Ranndino was being sarcastic in his post of trading Ovi and Green. He hasn't lost his mind after this loss. (He's usually a reasonable poster.)

I'm not ready to trade people either. Okay, I feel ready to fire the PP unit (and put some different people on it or rearrange the people they got). While Vancouver's PK was great tonight, the Caps PP unit has been looking downright bad, as of late.

Ovi gets uber attention in Canada, in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. How do the Caps play in the games in those cities?
Not so hot and the Caps lose.

capsfan75- dont worry, i picked up on that even without that sarcasm symbol... i usually avoid the boards when people get like this but clearly i keep hitting refresh :) Ranndino is fine, and is basically pointing out what i was- people's knee-jerk reactions aren't based in reality and are a waste of negative energy....caps PP does need a change up, but if there is one thing we dont need to worry about it's BB's knack for tinkering!

exactly spinner... we'll at least get a few more wins, even if our team is garbage :) magically once players make obviously positive moves (like getting a goal) all trade-mongers hide.

call me a homer, but i dont boo my team and i dont want to sell off the team when they get honestly outplayed. It's not like the canucks were a bunch of shlubs out there...

I think a lot of that credit HAS to go to the canucks on shutting down ovie, they were all over him tonight. he also seems to put so much pressure on himself for those games, whereas he seems far more relaxed vs other teams. but if there is one thing i have learned by watching him every year- he'll find a way to break through. you can hold back the russian machine, but not for long!
