Tonight's lineup: Caps at Flyers

Jose Theodore will start in goal tonight as the Caps seek their fifth straight win. Ray Emery, meanwhile, will get the nod for the Flyers in Peter Laviolette's debut behind the Philly bench.

Alex Ovechkin will miss the second of his two game suspension and Tom Poti will return from a six-game layoff with a chest injury. The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Laich-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Morrison-Fehr
Giroux-Perreault-Clark
Sloan-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Erskine-Alzner

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

I'll have more later.

I never drink beer made in the state (or country) of that night's Capitals opponent. Fortunately, Maryland has some great breweries.

Semin will get 7 tonight.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 5, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

@Capsyoungguns (from previous thread)

I'm glad GM McPhee had positive things to say about Semin in his pod cast. (If that is true, then he certainly would like him.) His opinion is one that counts. As is Boudreau's.

And Ovi certainly has positive things to say (quoted in this morning's paper in the article on Semin).

LET'S GO CAPSSSSSSS!!

Posted by: rachel216 | December 5, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

I see they've broken up Alzner and Juice as a defensive pairing. They've teamed up Juice with Poti and Alzner with Oisk.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 5, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

I'll settle for him getting a hat trick and the Caps winning.

I'll just settle for the Caps winning, in some way, shape, or form.

Much of Caps fandom is not terribly confident on tonight's game given that we're playing Philthy with a new head coach. (We're just talking tonight's game, not the long term.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 5, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Look like we have 2 legit scoring lines, but what if Giroux could imagine that the NHL was the AHL? Is it all in the mind? Its astonishing to watch him go from a top tier player in the A to a zero in the N.

GO GIROUX!!!!
GO PERRAULT!!!

GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the food/drink updates.I see mrszilla only has red meat. I like to split evenly between red and white (both food and wine) so I developed the habit of having steak during home games and all the white foods for road games.

As for tonight, I see that Center Ice only has the Flyer broadcast. So, I'll get almost no Caps info and have to listen all night about Peter Laviolette this and Peter Laviolette that.

Please someone post and key info that Joe B and Locker announce.

Posted by: cbs75 | December 5, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

That was an insanely dirty play by Carcillo. A complete sucker punch. A suspension should be looming for him. I hope the team can put a couple more in the net on this PP, make Carcillo feel like more of an idiot than he is.

Posted by: Aldred15 | December 5, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

I would rather have a healthy Bradley than a 2 goal lead in this game.

Hopefully, he doesn't miss any time.

He may be a 4th liner but he's been outstanding this season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 5, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

If Bradley has a concussion that punk should get suspended for a LONG time.

Posted by: mjwies11 | December 5, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Poor Brads. His gloves didn't hit the ice before he took one to the nose. If I was an NHL'er Brads is the one I would fight. It is ashame that our enforcer can't win a fight. He bleeds every time the gloves come off.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | December 5, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Tonight I get the Caps feed on DirecTV. Well, the Philly fans thought that was funny until they saw the nine minutes go up. We need to get another one on the clean ice. Let's go Caps and I hope Brads is OK.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 5, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Just because Bradley is willing to go doesn't make him an enforcer. I love the guy, but he rarely wins a bout.

Posted by: uncatim | December 5, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Ok, I thought about it some more and this is the only way that this makes sense:

Carcillo got 2 for cross checking, then 2 for instigating, then 5 for fighting in terms of servable penalties. We learned last game that the 2 for instigating is served before the 5 for fighting if there's no matching minor. We scored at 6:53, which means the first minor had expired, but the refs didn't bring it down to 5 minutes, meaning they were serving the major at the time. The two ways they could be serving the major are if the major was served first or second.

Assuming the refs followed the same rules as last game, this means that the cross checking penalty has to be served after the 5 for fighting, meaning we should still be on the major penalty until there are 2 minutes left in the penalty. Hope we score soon to test that theory. ;-)

Does this make sense or am I missing something?

Posted by: Raber | December 5, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Let's come out, work hard, and get a 5 on 3.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 5, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

1) Terrible play by Poti to not between the man and the goal. Terrible.

2) Really low-class move by Carcillo to punch before Bradley got the gloves off.

3) We learned the other night that the major gets served first when multiple penalties against the same player. That said, I'm really surprised at 9 mins rather than the way they gave 7 mins the other night to the Panthers. It's the Carcillo reputation that made it nine.

4) KEEP DRINKING! My Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc is about done, between lunch and dinner. I'll either pop open another white or mix up some light-colored cocktail.

4A) Got it! Picked the first lemon off our tree today - so, lemon, simple syrup, Bombay Sapphire & club soda - that's a tominfl1 Collins!

Carcillo? What a dumbass. Anyone remember last year? Carcillo gets in a fight to pump up the crowd and the Flyers end up losing the game as well as the series!

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | December 5, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Raber, major is served first.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | December 5, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

We gotta put them away. If we score the next one, it's over.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 5, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

the major penalty gets served first. so pour it on caps. then the minors. lets get 2 more in the next period. One comes from semin and the other from perault

Posted by: samb99 | December 5, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

@Raber
Carcillo the [beep] has to serve the major first--too bad we couldn't hang a few more goals on them during that 5 minutes. Now the minors are left to serve, and boy, do I hope we can score 2 out of 2 on those. (Just heard on the Caps radio broadcast that there's 1:33 to serve on the first minor and the full 2 minutes on the second.)

I, too, hope Carcillo has at least 1 game and a big fine coming. That attack was way worse than the one on Giroux, I think. Poor Bradley--please don't let him have a concussion.

GO CAPS!!!

@uncatim

I understand that he really isn't an enforcer. Unfortunately we don't really have one. He is really the only guy that will fight when he challanged on the Caps.

Lets get a couple more goals on the PP. Then the Philly fans may get up and leave.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | December 5, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Very clearly, to answer Raber's question, because it was the same thing the other night when Duco got 5+2, is that the rule is the 5 gets timed out first before the minor(s).

My question then becomes, what did Carcillo do to get 5+2+2 that Duco didn't do to only get 5+2. Is it that Duco "tried" fighting a turtling Giroux and that isn't as bad as sucker-punching?

Carcillo already helped make the Flyers lose in the playoffs to the Pens. The guy is a Doofus and Laviolette will get rid of him.

Wow your comment sucks big time buddy. First off Brads is a middle weight...not a heavy weigh enforcer which we currently don't have.

Secondly I think you would be a fool to go pick a fight with him. He's a stellar stand up guy who is held in the highest esteem by his team mates for whom he would do anything. For the 10 oints he has this year per TOI...he's done amazing! Let's hope he's not out for long....at least we got 3 goals for his pain.

For people on the chat this afternoon, the Flyer's goal came from Poti's man, left alone near the crease. I'm not hating, I'm just saying ...

Posted by: zmega | December 5, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Agreed about Brads being a middle weight. He can definitely hold his own in a fight, and has won much more than lost. He just happens to bleed too copiously which gives the impression he came out on the short end.

Ah...to bad for Brads. Dang.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | December 5, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

The Flyers fans were cheering after Carcillo cold-cocked Bradley. That says it all about the franchise, from the GM down to the fans. They are thugs, goons, and have no place in the NHL. Then the fans boo when the Caps score repeatedly on the extended power play. Are these people too stupid to see the connection between the gooning and giving up PP goals?

Wow. The Flyer announcers are so dumb. They just showed a highlight of Boudreau's first game behind the bench - and I quote:

(footage of the Flyer goal to tie it in the third) "But unfortunately they came up short as Aaron Ashem scored the game winning goal for the Flyers." Seconds later they showed Backstrom potting the winner in OT, to the silence of the announcer. A full minute later his buddy corrected him - adding that Ashem wasn't even on the Flyers at the time :-P

Sorry, I got distracted by the Caps goal.

It will be interesting to see what the league does with Carcillo, given what they did on the Ovi hit. The two situations are not really comparable, in that what Carcillo did was much worse. But will the league see it that way?

Carcillo got 2 for cross-checking Bradley before the punch happened. Bradley checked him legally into the boards, but went down during the check. Carcillo then cross-checked him in the back and dropped his gloves.

I think I'll take Brads back now for the 3 goals we scored on the PPs Carcillo gave us. We probably only need a 3 goal lead.

What, no take backs? :-(

Posted by: Raber | December 5, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Keep your heads up boys, the dirty hits are coming.

Ideally, the caps would have a heavyweight available to fight in games against certain teams. This would be a forward who sits out most games, but would come in handy at times like tonight. But wait - we have an extra forward occupying the space that we could otherwise use for a heavyweight. What's his name again?

Posted by: zmega | December 5, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Lets go for 10!

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | December 5, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Well, it was 4-1 when I STARTED making a tominfl1 collins. It ended up being a 32 oz drink with about 5 oz of Bombay Sapphire. Tookso long to make that it's now 7-1. Meanwhile Flyers announcers said they will ne interviewing Laviolette between periods 2 and 3. Yeah, right, he'll have some choice things to say.

BTW, where in Colonel Cheef and the Green bashers? And how about you, Lt. Col. LarryDavid?

I guess they are all hiding under the bridge with the Troll Battalion.

BTW, Carcillo is with them.

tominfl1, If we still have a 6 goal lead 10 mins into the third may I have a screwdriver?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 5, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Yet another reason why Philly fans make me sick, they cheer a ref getting injured. Stay classy Philly. Stay classy.

Posted by: cbs75 | December 5, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Flyers fans cheer the referee getting hit in the head by the puck. This is true pathology.

Posted by: zmega | December 5, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Hear that cheering? Stay classy Philly.

Posted by: Raber | December 5, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Jesus Christ. What a bunch of idiots in the stands. The ref gets tagged in the head and they cheer? Now I remember why I hate that city.

On a side note, THIS BLOWOUT IS AWESOME! Green has been wicked, as has Backstrom and Theo (weird to say that about the goalie in a 7-1 game)

Posted by: Aldred15 | December 5, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

And they booed him when he stood up.

Posted by: uncatim | December 5, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

My guess is that more then half of the Wachovia Center is empty

Posted by: kyle_woodruff | December 5, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | December 5, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wocoliz | December 5, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Awesome - they have Laviolette recorded talking to the Flyers announcers before the game and they're playing the interview between periods. He said he's hoping that the Caps will leave the building saying "wow that team was real tough to play against."

*Chuckles*

Posted by: Raber | December 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Yes I love to hear them boo also. Ovie would have had a great night. He is inspired by boos. Whom are they booing? Us or the Philthy team?

I find it very hard to believe that the fans cheered when Bradley was hurt, let alone that he was hurt unprovoked. I don't think I have ever seen such behavior. Has anybody?

Posted by: caraveli | December 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Only in Filthy. They boo a player injured via sucker-punch. They boo a ref hit in the head with puck. They boo their own team. They boo Santa Claus.

I really don't see any good reason why Philadelphia should be kept in the United States except that Bookbinder's restaurant downtown is really nice.

Can we trade Filthydelphia to Canada for Vancouver?

I am from Canada and Vancouver is amazing. Philly, on the other hand, is gross. They cheesesteaks there are incredible, I will admit, but not good enough to let them into any part of my country, not even Quebec.

Posted by: joek443 | December 5, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand the anger of Philly fans. It's a great city for a weekend trip - Independence Hall, the Liberty bell, the museums, crew races on the river, very good restaurants, not to mention the cheese steaks. But I agree Tom, Vancouver is amazing.

You can start drinking orange drinks at this point as a way of "rubbing it in" to Filthydelphia. It's like "my team has so whipped yours that I can drink your color." It's like when my man Ray Lewis starts ripping up pieces of other team sod. THIS IS OUR HOUSE!

Resigning Nick and Sasha will not be cheap but hopefully since both have only played in DC and see championship potential, they will consider the cap and stay. I hope fanohock1 and the others made it out of that slime pit alive.

Whatever the people of Filthy did in help creating America, that luster has long since worn off.

Based on "what have you done for me lately," we can hopefully trade Filthy to any country who would take it for a "province to be named later."

Two games sans Ovi and the score combined is 14-4.

A wake-up call to the league.

do they broadcast hockey night in canada on NHL network...like always???

@CTCapsPhan
i imagine up in CT directv can be problematic...i used to have comcast...and liked it but switched to directv just for the sunday ticket so i could stop going to the bar every sunday for skins games...

Memo to Tim Tebow: At this point, Timmy, you'd be lucky to be an NFL 7th round draft choice.

Say what y'all will about Scott Hartnall, but I'd take him on the Caps in a nanosecond - not like some college QB who got it far too easy and cries after a loss.

Posted by: JSchon | December 5, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@floridaCapsFan - I've come around to thinking that it would be good to have a heavyweight. If Nyls would just move on, we would have a roster spot for an occasional player like that. I don't think that Bradley should have to do so much of the fighting. And I think that several of Ovi's big hits have been in retaliation for cheap shots against him, Backstrom, or others. It would be good to have an enforcer to stick up for the skill players.

So where are all these posters from the last month? Dump Semin? Move Green to wing? Send Varly back to Hershey? Waive Schultz? Give up on Fehr?

There is a reason the Doofus Brigade exists and a reason all of you have BEEN INDUCTED.

The second reason is that he is a true DOOFUS in every sense of the word!

Memo to Don Cherry from tominfl1: Don, dude, riddle me this:

WoooooHooooo!oo! I luuuuv the Caps. GO CAPS GO CAPS!
What a satisfying win. What a dominant win.

Okay I'm calm now. Really it's tominfl1's fault--I drank at least half of the bottle of white wine (which one you ask-I'm not telling because it's not as good).

The boys were strong, disciplined, and confident. And Stecks has the monkey off his back. Against the Flyers no less.

And to make the evening even sweeter, we switched to the Blackhawks/Penns game and the Penns lost in overtime. WoooHooo. We are now truly ahead of the Pens in points and all of this without our secret weapon (or really not so secret weapon) Ovi.

Now for general p5223d offnedness on my part. What's with the idea that now Ovi has a 2 suspension game the enforcers/tough guys of other teams feel like they can take cheap dirty runs at us. Where is Kelley of SI now to call attention to the cheap shot the Flyers player (can't remember his name at the moment) to punch Brads before he can finish taking his gloves off. This gross penalty 9 minute penalty just one game against the Panthers taking a ridiculous 7 minute penalty against us. Without our resident tough guy Ovi they think they can get away with trying to put our guys out of the game. I'm glad the refs are tough but really Campbell. This is what you get when you take honest checks gone bad in the moment to true cheap and dirty shots against the Caps. Maybe once great but now hack journalists such as Kelley at SI should take a moment and revaluate what is considered reckless or on the edge and what is truly a dirty or cheap shot against another player. Okay Okay it's he wine-we rocked the white too well tonight but if Campbell is going to suspend our guy Ovi then he needs to take a harder look at what the Panthers and the Flyers attempted at our team since Ovi has been out. If his stated desire is to "control" the violence and potential injury in this game then he needs to look harder at the true tough enforcer dudes we've faced down and DEFEATED in our past two games.

Okay I'm calm now. But veeeeerrrry satisfied. And I'm not even going to check this post over so if I've made a mistake oops sorry. Just chalk it up to the excitement I feel at a major dominant SMACKDOWN to the entire NHL establishment!!!!!

@tominfl1--we had stew with red meat but because of my nervousness I only ate the meat between the periods and the noodles and potatoes during the periods. I'm glad you enjoyed watching the beatdown of the Philthy Flyers. It goes to show you, the teams taking runs at the Caps are not exactly being successful. They're getting big long major penalties to kill off. If they suspended Ovi for his "work", Carcillo and Duco should certainly get suspended. What they did was even worse.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 5, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

3) We learned the other night that the major gets served first when multiple penalties against the same player. That said, I'm really surprised at 9 mins rather than the way they gave 7 mins the other night to the Panthers. It's the Carcillo reputation that made it nine.

tominfl1

It was the blood!!!! I don't care what the refs or Campbell say, if there is an injury then the penalties increase--whether fairly or not.

It almost seems that Ovi is our enforcer by default. Unless Bradley has that honor, also by default. I hope Bradley's okay.

Someone posted on Japers that Bradley will make the trip to Tampa and they'll determine his status then. He was interviewed and sounded coherent.

If Brads can't play, who takes his place on the fourth line? We assume that Ovi is also coming back. (Do we also assume Giroux is still here or do we assume he's gone?)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 5, 2009 11:11 PM | Report abuse

If anyone gets sent down I think it will be Giroux. He just doesn't seem to fit as well as Perrault does with the Caps scheme. Giroux takes a good amount of shots but it looks like he thinks he is still shooting on an AHL goalie.

Now that's how you stick it to a team full of goons. Take that Carcillo. Try being a man and fighting like one and squaring off the right way.

An a** whoopin. That was a tank of whoop a** tonight. A great job all around by everyone getting involved. Congrats to Stecks on finally getting the monkey off his back.

Bottomline - a good team made Philly pay for one bonehead's mistake. Theo was once again rock solid. Gotta give the Caps credit as both their goalies are locked in right now. Let's hope it remains that way.

Poti - I know it's a minute detail in a blowout but you have to get behind your guy in front - not in front.

Wow - this was fun to watch. Enjoy it for a day and then back to work.

Newsflash to Ovie - stay off your feet a little more - the boys got this hahahaah. Ok ok I'm kidding.

Off to sunny Tampa as the Great 8 returns.

It's been a two point night.

Yes the trolls are all tucked snug in their hideouts under the bridge in their homes--nothing like a mixed metaphor--when we win. Especially when we win big. With a smackdown. Yes I was nervous before tonight's game because even though I believe in the adage that any NHL team on any given night can beat any other NHL team, I give more respect to the Flyers than the Panthers. It was a baaaad night for them, an uncharacteristic night, not a night I would expect. And we were not as kind to them as we were to the Panthers at the end of the game. We kept going for the goals. And all is right with the world. Good night.

Will Peter Laviolette (or should we call him Peter Love-a-Lot), who doesn't like teams who fight, really be able to change the philthy culture of the hockey team in the City of Brotherly Love, the team who has an amazing talent for acquiring the league's dirtiest players?

Carcillo sounds like he should be suspended. He deserves it more than Ovi did.
