Tonight's lineup: Caps at Islanders

Jose Theodore will start tonight at Nassau Coliseum and will oppose Dwayne Roloson of the Islanders in the teams' fourth and final meeting of the season.

New York center Josh Bailey will play after missing the morning skate with an undisclosed illness. As for the Caps, it doesn't look there will be any surprises with the lineup. So things should look awfully familiar:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Erskine-Poti
Morrisonn-Alzner

Goalies
Theodore
Neuvirth

I'll have more later.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

He jacked the glass up and it didnt even look like his strongest shot.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 26, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

I dont think Fehr is very good carrying the puck. He is the guy who should END UP with the puck. He escorts the puck to the net!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 26, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Semin is worried he is going to Edmonton. He should know that if eklund said it, it ain't happening.

Ok, raise your hands for those of you who are glad we signed Semin for at least another year??

Posted by: johnzilla | January 26, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

And Sasha makes it 4 for the Caps in the first period! (Um, anybody want to apologize for wanting to trade him?)

Posted by: wocoliz | January 26, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

what a period. you almost feel bad for NYI...almost. One guy on their team said they could win a series in the playoffs, here's a nice taste of what you'll be up against.

Posted by: UnleashTheCaps | January 26, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | January 26, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Does Roloson start 2nd period?

Posted by: rachel216 | January 26, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Depends. I know they have been really worried about Rick D playing too many games in a week so I don't know.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 26, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Did they mean Islander announcer? Actually I'm watching the Islander feed because it is of much better quality than the Comcast feed. Their announcers are very even handed even complimenting Ovi on his sportsmanship regarding the Hiller incident.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 26, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Don't know how many are Rolo's mistakes as poor D coverage and being simply out-matched. Much better effort in the first against the Isles in quite a while, too.

Posted by: johnzilla | January 26, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Well that answers the goalie question.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 26, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

This one is not over, the Caps need to bear down some more especially with the Ducks up next.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 26, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

semin is playing some of the best hockey i've ever seen from him. can we please stop hypothetically trading him? so he takes a bad penalty in the offensive zone from time to time...that was pretty ugly...but he brings so much to this team.

It was just a throwback reference to Backstroms goal against Johnson in the Pittsburgh game. I thought Semin's 2nd looked a lot like Backstrom's goal. I have no doubt that Pittsburgh announcers would say that if they saw Semin's.

Posted by: UnleashTheCaps | January 26, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

How can that be hooking? I could have bought tripping but it would have been a weak call but hooking?!? I think the ref just saw the guy fall and called something.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 26, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

as Ovie would say that was sick... goal by erskine...

We can argue about the D again if everyone wants but I think between Flash and BMo we have good 2nd and 3rd line centers and we even have Laich that can play center if one of them gets hurt or starts playing incredibly poor.

# Theodore is not sitting in the tunnel when the back up is usually seated. 30 minutes ago from tarik twitter.

My question: Is Tarik too comfortable on his chair for him to go out and inquire? or are the Caps so restricted to the media that this information can not be obtained?

Tarik sits in the press box which is probably near the top of the building. In order for him to "go out and inquire" he would end up missing a large segment of the game while he makes his way from the press box to the locker room. Be patient. Once the locker room is made available to the press I'm sure he'll be asking plenty of questions.

Laughlin said "shinny hockey." He didn't say an expletive. It's very clear, unless you don't know the word "shinny," in which case you'll of course search your brain for a word and you'll come up with the next-closest alternative. It was a very clear N sound, not a T sound.

Here you go--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinny

I don't like having our top line out there at the end of a blowout game. I know other teams do it but I just don't like it. In basketball, the guys that don't play as much are out there in that situation. I'd like to see more NHL teams going that route.

Beyond that, one of our better overall efforts this season. We played well in every zone for the most part.

The early penalties we took in the neutral and offensive zones were a negative. With a 2 goal lead and all the momentum on the road, there was no need to let the Islanders get back into it.

I also thought Theodore could have come out of the net to cut off the angle a little better on the Islanders' first goal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 26, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Detroit just can't catch a break it seems. They blow another 3rd period lead, giving up a goal in the final 30 seconds. At least they got a point.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Now that was just a good old fashioned Capital Punishment victory.

A balanced attack and some solid defense. Semin all over the place and making plays happen. This offense is scary good. Ovie, Backstrom, Green - did any of them get on the scoresheet???? And 7 goals were still scored? Scary.

Here's to hoping if something is ailing Theo - it wasn't too serious. Heal up Theo. Nice relief job by Neuvy. He had to make a few good solid saves.

Good times. Business is taken care. Back home to the phone booth to get ready for a bunch of quacks from Anaheim.

It's been a two point night.

Also, agreed with you and Joek on the 1st line at the end of the game comments... Against certain teams, you're asking for trouble and it just seems to be in bad form to me. Let the 3rd and 4th liners play the better part of the minutes in the 3rd in games like these.

Great game all around. Semin was unbelievable tonight. Aside from the two goals, there was one play during a PP in the 3rd (I believe) that really struck me. He had the puck along the boards with a forward and a dman on him and basically used his stick handling to create space between the two and allowed himself to move the puck. It was subtle but insane at the same time.

The first period was a great one for fans of Alex Semin. The first two periods were great for fans of the NHL's best "third" line. Take a bow: Chimera, B. Morrison, Fehr. An inspired, creative choice by Boudreau.

(What do you do when you have a bunch of great 2nd line wingers who are clearly better on the top 2 lines as opposed to grinders? Move the 2nd line center down to the third line and switch a former center/winger back to center.)

That would be "the Queen's English," as it's possessive (to Her Majesty).

You also forgot the comma after "Ok."

But thats alright. And its oK. I usually dont get this picky alot.

What say on Caps final point total? I predicted 112 before the season. Right now, based on performance to date, and given the heavy leaning of home games, non-western time zone games and games vs easier opponents in the "to go" portion of the schedule, I'm putting a range of 115-120.

It's the lack of injuries (compared to last year) that, for the most part, has caused performance to exceed plan. We can extrapolate that performance and assume a reasonable expectation that it will continue. A significant trade and if the injury bug stays away, maybe 122 pts. Can you all tell what I do for a living for the nation's largest defense contractor?

JSchon: No, I don't think your boy will ever be a center. I have been following him since about ten minutes after the Caps picked him in 03. Had 50+ goals twice I tink in the WHL. I remember maybe hearing Tim Kerr comparisons back then. Maybe now we can say "Knuble comparison" and that would be fine.

So, why not center?

Well, I'll tell you. Let's look at Green and Schultz. Green's job, due to his skill, is to carry the mail. As a consequence, he makes turnovers and gets a bum rap. Sarge never makes turnovers because he only holds the puck an average (I'm kidding here) of 3 seconds per game. Obviously the two of them play a different game.

Now look at Fehr. He races around but hardly ever holds the puck. A center must be able to do that if truly effective. Best puckholders are Semin, Backie, Ovi and BMo I think. Semin is best of all, and he is a forward. Fehr isn't a hot potato player like Schultz but his "with puck" time is really low. He gets the puck and either shoots or passes. He seems like a mexican jumping bean out there.

My point - he doesn't have the patience to be a center, at least not now. And, as he has size and strength, I'd rather he "be all he can be" and become a Knuble and do it as a RW.

First off, you do what you do far too well to label yourself as "arguer." You are a "debater." And, I would say, no one puts stats on this blog in support of a debate as well as you do.

I wouldn't be surprised if you work in should-cost analysis as I do. The secret to success in that field is putting numbers in support of the opinion.

The main thing about Fehr, what makes him so good, so Tim Kerr-like, is that, while he isn't especially fast overall, he's really quick at decisive moments.

Fehr has a "well above average skill," maybe "extremely good," at getting the puck in the red zone (to use football terminology) and "scoring a touchdown."

He hardly ever has the puck, never carries it seems, but when he gets it, it's a high-octane opportunity.

My opinion has always been that Eric Fehr is EXACTLY the type of player you must have to win the Cup. Like Semin, but to a lesser extent, his skill is unique.

My opinion: He will score 300 goals in the ten-year period 2010-2020.
