Defense

Schultz-Pothier
Scratches: Sloan (healthy), Erskine (bruised hand)

Goal

Varlamov

I'll have more after the game.

WHERE IS JOE B!?!?!?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

Dont get me wrong. I LOVE Al Koken in part time play-by-play. Is Joe B. goin BIG-TIME on us?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

I am ready for the game and hope we get some first line scoring, a PP break out night and maybe a goal from the D.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | October 24, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

From other thread:

joek: I will grant you MacInnis had better slapshot from stationary position.

HOWEVER, when Iafrate had the wheels moving, carrying the puck, and did that BIG windup, it was Anna Nicole Smith wicked.

Tonight's lineup: Grouper (yikes - $15/lb) and green beans as it must be white wine for road game. (Edna Valley 2007 chardonnay - a winner!)

Posted by: tominfl1 | October 24, 2009 6:48 PM | Report abuse

@Caps4Life1

Let's add some 2nd line scoring while we're at it.

Seriously, I'll be happy with any result where the Caps score more points than the Islanders.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Fehr up on the 2nd line. I love it. Kill 'em Eric.

And no one is more surprised than I am that I'm saying this, but I'm glad the erstwhile
"Mr. Threeormore" is back to take over for Varlamov. He only gets wins because the guys play differently for him. His GAA indicates big probs.

@large

WTF? Bad number for Theo? Are you on crack?

Posted by: rovingbandit | October 24, 2009 7:06 PM | Report abuse

why don't you read my post again rockstar

Posted by: large23220 | October 24, 2009 7:08 PM | Report abuse

Sorry missed out on who "he" was...

Agreed on Varly. Better work hard with Irbe or he's on his way to choclate town.

Posted by: rovingbandit | October 24, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Varly has let in a few softies, but the Caps as a team haven't played consitant in front of him. Even with that said he is 4-0. Theo has very good numbers so far this year.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | October 24, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

So far lazy....and we can't get a shot to the net!

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | October 24, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

as Ron Weber used to say if you are on the ice for a shorthanded goal agaisnt, you should get two minuses...

Can we decline a penalty?

Posted by: HobbesLionheart | October 24, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Bruce is going to rip into this team. That was a terrible effort. And what was with the penalty at the end???

I miss Semin.

Posted by: Raber | October 24, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

That was one terrible period!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Raber

I agree, we need Semin. He takes so much pressure off of Ovechkin and they seem to be playing like they are on a pond.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | October 24, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Bears tied 2-2 with Bingo. SC down 2-1 to Gwinnett.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | October 24, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

I miss Semin also.

The next time the Caps get a power play (or should we call it a short handed scoring opportunity for the other team), I do NOT want to see the "first" power play unit out on the ice. (Okay, some of the individuals but NOT THAT GROUP TOGETHER.)

Okay, maybe we should start out with the 2nd line plus Knuble and Poti. Frankly, maybe our so called fourth line should get a chance. They can't do any worse.

Okay, I'm sure Philthy's strategy should be to trip our guys deliberately and go to the box on purpose since they have Mike Richards, Mr. Shorty goal himself on their roster.

From the other thread:

@Chicken Little and Capsfan75
Unlike you two I actually have partied with these guys (I've posted photo links here last yr) and I can say that Semin was already sick and out partying. Not just Sat but Sun and Mon going out. So yeah, it's not a bad guess that he didn't rest up right. Part of Greenie's problem last season was the partying - too many late nights including ones before games don't lend to good play.

Semin is no Ovie - his Russian Machine can break!

Posted by: CapsSighting | October 24, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

What we NEED to do is play a more sound and disciplined game. We got out hustled and outplayed in that period. It simply looked like they wanted it more!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

If the don't shape up, the Caps will have the dubious distinction of being the first team to lose in regulation to the Isles. Now how pathetic is that? Very.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

can they stop showing all those numbers hanging on the rafters??

5, 9, 19, 22, 23, 31.. used to have nightmares about them

Posted by: joek443 | October 24, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

@joek443

Those numbers contribute to my nightmares also.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

OH NO I feel like a loser cause I don't party with ovie and semin. OH NO looks like ovie and semin have a stalker!! OH no

Posted by: ChickenLittleCapsFan | October 24, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

@CapsSighting

Lesson learned. No one can keep up with Ovi in the partying department.

Yet, here Semin missed Monday's practice. But went to practice on Tuesday (after going out on Monday night, as you have reported.) And then he's been out ever since (but skating at Kettler).

If you have any influence on the boys, try to get them to go home earlier.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

next power play we get we should turn it down so we dont get scored on short handed again..our pp is such a joke......brutal

Posted by: wendel2 | October 24, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

@wtf_e_fehr

Yes, the Isles seem to want it more.

Methinks a special practice will be scheduled tomorrow if they don't shape up tonight.

Posted by: wendel2 | October 24, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Gotta shoot that puck Backstrom. The defense was set up to protect the pass but he had an open lane to the net.

Posted by: Raber | October 24, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

The Caps look about as excited to play this game as me when I get dragged to shop at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

PP has continued to be terrible. Shorthanded goal, and a bad one at that. Theo should've had that. Overall sluggish and disinterested.

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

funny how they seem to score a ton of goals when Varly is betweem the pipes and the offense seems to go south when Theo's playing...

8 shots in half a game..what a horrible effort

Posted by: wendel2 | October 24, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 24, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Much better effort on the PP. I like the line we had on for the 5 on 3 - looked really solid.

Ovechkin is having head problems. Since when does he miss the net that badly on a wide open one-timer?

Posted by: Raber | October 24, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Another blown PP. Anyone want to take a bet on how many Caps have the flu this week?

Posted by: rovingbandit | October 24, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I bet Nylander would be motivated to play the Islanders.

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 24, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

The only comfort so far is that Pitts are also in the same situation (0-1) at the end of the first period.

What's with this team this year? They just don't seem that hungry & motivated.

Posted by: caraveli | October 24, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Thats what we need...SOME EMOTION!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Here's the good news. We didn't show up for 2 periods yet are still very much in this game. One good period and we can take this.

Good to see Ovie trying to stir things up. Showing some life signs finally.

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Good news is that we are playing a struggling team that is prone to late game lapses. We can win this game by playing one solid period. The only question is...WILL WE DO IT???

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

@ caraveli

I was gonna say the same thing. Last year we used to just dominate teams. They couldn't even get out of their zone. Just don't look the same this year even when we win. Maybe all the great press went to the guys' heads. They think they should be awarded a W just for showing up.

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Lol...what was the good news again?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

@wendel2

The soccer game is probably better entertainment than the Caps at this point.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

The boys looked a little better but still no scoring.

We're still -1 on the power play.

And now Clark is on the first line.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

I will really be pissed if they lose 1-0 against the ISLES. Way to go guys, to be the first team to lose in regulation to the Isles.

Maybe they can get hot in Period 3. Maybe their goalie can do a third period collapse.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

More proof that Mike Richards is a dirty player:

He apparently hit David Booth of the Panthers up high and Booth left on a stretcher. He did this with a 2 goal lead in the second period.

Posted by: Raber | October 24, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

@CapsSighting

In your opinion, does Ovy party too much? Apparently, you're the expert on the nightlife of him and Semin.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are losing the face-off battle 10 to 24.

They are getting outhit 20 to 13.

The Islanders have blocked 20 shots to our 8.

They have 10 takeaways to our 4.

We have 7 giveaways to their 3.

They are simply outworking us.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 24, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Keith Aucoin has that distinctive "Boston" accent. Sure enough, he is from about 10 miles outside, nearby Waltham.

Posted by: NatyBG | October 24, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Get Aucoin & Giroux out there and tell them they'll stay up for 3 more games if they score one.

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Didn't see the hit, but you don't see many five minute majors for interference. It must have been pretty bad if they gave him five for it.

Posted by: Raber | October 24, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

BB has his work cut out for him.

This team is an enigma.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 24, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

This team is frustrating. Why do they play like this vs. horrible teams? This team has more problems than I thought... Our PP has been horrible and all the shots we've taken have NO chance of beating Roloson.

Being shutout by the Islanders... wow. Looks like they'll get their first regulation win against the Caps. I just feel like through 10 games, we are not even close to playing to our potential.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 24, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Ovi has a milder dose of the bug that is ailing Semin.

Yes, I know I was of little faith today. Green scored his goal (and started the Caps scoring) soon after I walked upstairs. (Maybe they needed me to take a time out from watching the game.)

Don't know who those fellows in the white sweaters were the first two periods, but I recognized a great goalie. Was it slushy ice or a sluggish team?

Yeah, just like the Penguins did not deserve those 2 points last night, either, but you do not hear their fans complaining! This is a great TEAM win, and it is even more satisfying that there are other contributors besides Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Semin. It is nice to see Green starting to get on a roll! So, enjoy these character building games because all championship teams win them in the end. Go Caps!

Posted by: JohnWWW | October 24, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom is one of our most responsible players yet has finished the last two games with the worst +/- on our team with nobody even tied with him. +/- is an overrated statistic, especially in small sample sizes, but I found that to be slightly odd. He has been late on a couple backchecks though... or maybe just one. I think somebody else was closer to the dude that scored the first goal tonight for the Islanders.

Aucoin was one of the people I was proposing to use on the PP. Not to mention the 4th line.

Here's the quote:

"Ovechkin - I love you as a guy, I love you as a player, you play my type of game. You take no prisoners, that's fine. But you're running out of lives, I'll tell you right now," Cherry said. "Watch what you've done. Too many times have you hit guys from behind. You won't fight so guys right now have you on a list. I'm telling you, you better be very careful right now. You're going to be very, very sorry some day because somebody is going to cut you in half. I hope it doesn't happen because he's an exciting player. ... When he gets it, it's going to be a goodie."

Oh noes, Don Cherry disapproved!!!

He secretly has wet dreams about Ovechkin. Ovechkin is everything he loves in a hockey player.

If Ovechkin happened to be a Canadian, everybody and their mother knows Cherry would be singing a different tune.

tmac2yao, I couldn't agree more, although the other commentators joined in with him this time.

Ron McLean and Don Cherry take Ovie to task for the slew foot and replay several hits of his from over the years. I think they showed the hit from behind on Briere, the hit on Heward, the slew foot from the other night and one other one that I forget.

McLean goes onto to harp on the Briere hit from a few years ago in the second period and wonders why Ovie wasn't suspended for this hit because of his reputation.

Milbury says that a player or Campbell are eventually going to take it to Ovie since he doesn't fight.

Well, that's 2 points I didn't expect to get. They really got rolling about 1/4 of the way into the third; great job by Theo to keep them in the game. Congratulations to Aucoin on his first NHL goal; BB was really mixing the lines up to try and get something going. Finally it paid off. I hope Greene's leg will be ok. I know he played on it after but it will probably stiffen up.

According to the article on the Flyers game, Richards got a major penalty, a 10 minute misconduct and could be facing a suspension.

Hope the suspension is sooner (if it happens) rather than later since that would mean missing the Caps game.

Gee, wonder what Don Cherry has to say about Richards.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 24, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

There are at least one hundred players in the league for whom you could search through all of their plays over the last 5 years and come up with a small reel of questionable plays, including guys like Malkin, Crosby, Pronger, Richards, etc...

When it's an elite non-Canadian player like Ovechkin who has so many jealous haters, it's naturally going to get more attention.

tmac2yao, once again, I completely agree.

Posted by: dfe1 | October 24, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

What did Cherry say about Phaneuf during the preseason?

What did he say about Iginla a couple weeks ago?

How about Richards tonight?

He may have criticized them but something tells me he never made threatening statements like the ones he makes about Ovechkin a couple times each season.

The good thing is that this stuff bounces off Ovechkin if it doesn't actually motivate him further. Plus, there are hordes of Canadiens who themselves know Cherry is a sick man.

As for Don Cherry, when his generation of hockey fans passes on, he too will pass on and no one will care or remember who he was. He has a small following of an older fan base and that is it. Every once in a while his tabloid statements like today, make the news because it is so ridiculous.

Don Cherry is a tired, sad old man with an antiquated view of hockey which he is desperately trying to retain. I doubt he even owns a cell phone.

Cherry would be drooling all over OV if he was Canadian... he has nice suits tho LOL

Very well put, BernieWolfeFan.

Just perused the game stats; we got outshot 16-8 in the third period, it sure didn't seem like that to me. Another shocker, OV only had 2 shots for the entire game. Something's up with him (and Backstrom).

Oh yes, this is the second game in a row we have given up a short-handed goal. I'm getting flashbacks to the bad old days.

I guess everybody's gone drinking now.

@ tmac2yao

Couldn't have said it better myself. That slew foot from the other night was accidental. What Richards did tonight is 1001 times worse. Wonder how many lists is he on now and when he's gonna get cut in half? Eh, Don?

The only one who's running out of lives is Don Cherry. When he finally croaks it's going to be a goodie.

Did I call that goal by Aucoin or what? BTW, I've been saying since last year that he should be with the Caps all the time. He's a better player than about 5-6 other guys that are regulars. Like say, Clark. When he was moved to the 1st line tonight I said, "Good god".

Posted by: ranndino | October 24, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Clark is just completely lost out there.

Aucoin scores with Ovechkin and Backstrom and the NEXT SHIFT Boudreau sends them out with Clark? How could I possibly be the only one seeing this???

hey ranndino, that's a capital g in God.

Aucoin seems a bit on the small side to me. Maybe that's why he hasn't yet made it to the NFL full time.

nobody is gonna fight anyone else's battle in the new NHL, there's too much money involved...

the panthers/flyers' game was pretty much decided in the middle of the third period... in the old days you would have seen numerous fights for the remainder of the game... I didn't see ONE tonight.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Some games you win pretty going away and other games you have no business winning but you do. Tonight it was the latter. Wow. What an ugly, sleepwalking, look like they were skating in cement type of game.

How many times did a pass get tipped, deflected, blocked tonight? As bad as the Caps looked at times tonight - give the Isles credit for putting forth a spirited effort.

In the end - the Caps still found a way to get two points. Theodore made some big saves.

All I have to say is Knuble is still a beast. Wish our defensemen would kill people like he does. After Green took that hit - Knuble was ready to eat that player for lunch.

Oh well - it's two points.

Back to the phone booth as the Flyers come a knocking.

Oh and before I forget - I didn't watch or see any of Don Cherry's comments but he's had it in for Ovie forever. Don Cherry's opinion or credibility isn't worth crap. He needs to go away. And take those horrible suits too. :)

Ice Breakers Goal Shakers.

@FloridaCapsFan: "Another shocker, OV only had 2 shots for the entire game. Something's up with him..."

Ovi looked sick to me, plus they blocked a lot of shots.
