Tonight's lineup: Caps at Lightning

Semyon Varlamov will start in goal tonight for the Caps, who are looking to win their sixth straight game overall and 12th in a row over the Bolts. Mike Smith, meantime, is expected to get the nod for Tampa Bay.

Alex Ovechkin is back from a two-game suspension and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn will return from a two-week layoff because of a concussion. Karl Alzner has been reassigned and Matt Bradley has returned to Arlington for family reasons.

The rest of the lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Morrison-Fehr
Laich-Perreault-Clark
Sloan-Steckel-Giroux

Defense
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Poti
Erskine-Pothier

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

I'll have a little more after the game.

As in #1 member of the Doofus Brigade LarryDavid.

It is really stooping low on the trolometer to just post #1. Don't forget to get Cheef here as well.

BTW, where were you after Saturday's game? Couldn't find anything to troll about? How's it under the bridge these days?

Hello, Lt Col LarryDavid. Nothing negative to say yet? How's that battalion of yours?

I've been rocking the white this evening with shrimp and pasta paired with J. Lohr 2007 Riverstone Chardonnay.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 7, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Love the first line and backstrom , but wouldn't mind seeing 85 get a chance to center 8 and 28. Just for a shift or two.

I posted on previous thread, but here's a song in honor of Ovi's return:

Song for tonight:

-----------------------------

There's a prehistoric monster
that came from outer space
created by the Martians
to destroy the human race.

The FBI is helpless.
He's twenty-stories tall.
What can we do? Who can we call?

Call Ovi, the Eighth Man.
Call Ovi, the Eighth Man.
Faster than a rocket.
Quicker than a jet.
He's the mighty robot.
He's the one to get.
Call Ovi, the Eighth Man.
Quick, call Ovi, the mightest robot of them all!

------------------------

There was a cartoon back in the 60's called "Eighth Man". In reality, for the song "Tobar" was the 8th man, not Ovi, but it's appropro for tonight

I'm rockin the white tonight as well. But I got dinner out the way. It's a school night after all.

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | December 7, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Tonight the Caps start a run of 33 games in 69 days leading up to the Olympic break. 18 of those games will be on the road.

I'd like to see the guys start it off with a kick-Bolt night tonight.

Give LD a chance. No need to sucker punch him before ha can square up and drop the gloves.

May the reunited OBS line do well again. And may the Caps win tonight! The Flash/Morrison/Fehr line really rocked on Saturday.

@Capsyoungguns

Glad you got dinner out of the way before the game. We did, too. We had chicken (rocking with white meat) but the sauce was more reddish brown.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 7, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

@dcsportsfan1

Otherwise, the refs will charge you with many penalty minutes, with no offsetting penalties to the other team. Witness Carcillo from Saturday.

I dont know about you people but I am HYPED UP for this game. We were already clicking on ALL cylinders and we get the best player in the world back tonight and...

I don't think Laich has really been earning his time on the second line lately considering how good the other wings have been. As I typed that, Brooks ringed one off the post :D.

Posted by: realoldcapsfan | December 7, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Canes are beating the Pens? Could this evening get any better? The only thing left is for Ovie to get 10 points tonight and blow his rivals (in points and goals) out of the water.

I just hope we hold on the the lead. Will we hold on to it and will Varly have a shut out or will he be scored in bunches?

From a previous post:

I don't know what to make of this. Our PP does not seem to be effective against these guys, we may have registered a couple of shots on what, three PPs? The TB defense is doing a good job with the 5 on 5, generally taking the man and clearing the puck or at least upsetting the attack. The Caps cannot get into a rythm so far. I hope they can solve it in the next 2 periods.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 7, 2009 8:21 PM

There's still a period to go but, I guess they solved it!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 7, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

@guer - Hey, I think Lisa is cute. Of course, I am very old.

Posted by: zmega | December 7, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

A Caps vs. Tampa Bay game is like watching my elder daughter's team against my younger daughter's team. Everyone on the Caps seems to be the age of my first born (24 but pushing 25). While everyone on the Bolts seems to be the age of my last born (who's 18). Okay, I'm exaggerating on the age front.

And guess who the main heroes on the scoring front are: the guys closest in age to my first born. Yes, the September 1985 brigade strikes again (with assists from the gang born in 1984 but less than a year older than my first born.)

The Thrashers fall like leaves in Toronto, 5-2. After falling behind 5-0, they made things interesting with another 3rd period flurry that fell short. If they could play 60 minutes, the Thrashers would be tough as nails.

@realoldcapsfan

Well, Brodeur had a head start on Varly by many years. (Gee, wasn't Brodeur a contemporary of Kolzig's.)

looks like jersey still potentially has us by a point plus a tie-break so 2.

caps have 44 pts in 30 games = 1.467 pts per game
nj 41 pts in 28 = 1.464

caps would be #1 overall right now

@caraveli

I feel the same way watching Ovi and Semin. I get nervous at times. In my case, there are no grand kids. My first born is Ovi's age and nearly a year younger than Semin. (She's like Semin in many ways.)

Very nice game. Well played the Caps. Looked like bad ice out there tonight.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 7, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Wait! Does this mean that we are now #1 in the whole league? Wow! Has that ever happened before? I never remembered it.

#1 in the "whole league" is who raises the Cup at the end.

I never thought I'd live to see the day! Number one in the whole league! And Varly is #6 in save percentage. And Gaborik's days at the top of the leaders in goals are numbered.

BB - do yourself (and Ovi) a favor - limit him to around 21-23 minutes and keep everybodys head in the game for a full 60. no need to rely on Ovi when you have enough other guys that can also get the job done

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 7, 2009 3:48 PM

i guess BB reads CI before games to get coaching input from the genius fans (laughing sarcasm) here (but i don't think GMGM get anywhere near CI)

ovi 22:02 total ice time

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
60 minutes of hockey...solid goaltending...monstrous backchecking....and the usual suspects dent the twine.

A nice win by the guys tonight. The backchecking was impressive. Welcome back Ovie. He just keeps going like the rest of this team.

Varly was on and Semin oh my. Semin had his chances but what a great pass on the first goal.

This team is playing sound hockey tonight.

Downie is a bum for the hit from behind - loved seeing everyone come to Pothier's aid including Pothier himself getting back up and putting Downie in a headlock.

It's on to Buffalo where the Caps need to bring their A game on Wednesday because the Sabres will come out flying after being blanked at home by the Devils.

On a side note - congrats Marty Brodeur for tying the NHL record for shutouts. Very deserving.

It's been a two point.

Ice Breakers Goal Shakers.

Woo Hoo--let's enjoy being in first while it lasts because we are only 1/3 of the way in the season and we will hit a lull. That's life and the season is long.

Question for the Caps history buffs: what other times have the Caps had the number 1 spot in the whole league during regulation? I honestly don't know. And am too lazy to do any research right now.

I like how we had a rough start though we still managed to earn points. And how this team learned how to win without our "not-so-secret" weapon Ovi. IMHO I think this experience will help us through any rough patches down the road. And will help us come time for the playoffs.

I am going to sleep very happy now. So happy Ovi came back strong and that Fehr got another goal. And defense stayed in control. And Varly with a shutout. Just happy......!

The three stars of the game or as they say in Russian:

Три звезды игры

1) Варламов

2) Овечкин

3) Семин

(Yup, Varly, Ovi, and Semin, the Caps' ever loving Russian Troika.)

Too bad we can't give 4th and 5th stars to Fehr and Flash.

@caraveli

Yes, I never thought I'd see the day when the Caps were #1 in the league either. Let's hope they are #1 in June this year.

@FloridaCapsFan

Agree on the bad ice. The guys were sure slipping and sliding.

(At least the game wasn't "slip, sliding away" for the Caps but rather by Tampa Bay.)

P.S. - I know Theo is playing solid again in net but I say stick with Varly on Wednesday in Buffalo then split Friday and Saturday between the two.

Reported by Corey via Japers' that Olie was in the dressing room after the game. Still miss him, too. I hope his number (37) and Bondra's (12) will be retired one day.
