Tonight's lineup: Caps at Lightning

Michal Neuvirth will start in goal tonight as the Caps go for their fourth consecutive win overall and 13th in a row over the Lightning (that includes a seven game winning streak at St. Pete Times Forum). Neuvirth is expected to oppose Tampa Bay's Mike Smith.

Looks like the only change Coach Bruce Boudreau will make to his lineup is going to be replacing John Erskine (day-to-day, upper body injury) with Tyler Sloan.

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Schultz-Poti
Sloan-Pothier

Goalies
Neuvirth
Theodore

I'll have more after the game.

I would love to see that BMo line GO OFF!
Also, its about time for Ovie to go completely nuts. He hasnt been scoring at his usual clip, and it the 'NING.

GO CAPS!!!!!!!

@wtf_e_fehr

are the lightening the team that ovie has scored the most against?

or am i too old school and thinking peter bondra...i think he used to average 5 goals game against TB...or maybe i just saw him do it once or twice...

here is to hoping ov gets his first HatRick of the season...

Anyone else watching CSN on Comcast and getting no sound for pregame?

Posted by: ralCapsFan | January 12, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

all I want outta Ovie is 50 goals, 100 points and better defensive play like he's been doing since he's been wearing the C.

and save his best for the playoffs.

Posted by: joek443 | January 12, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Yep still no sound here on CSN MINUS (grrr) either.

anyone have a link for the game?

Posted by: elicea | January 12, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

No sound for me either. Comcast better fix this asap. The Wizards game on CSN has sound!

Does anyone know of an online feed for those of us who don't get CSN+?

Posted by: StageHand | January 12, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

with directv and center ice package i guess ill be watching in HD on the TB broadcast. atleast ill be able to see (and i guess hear) the game...

sure would like to hear the local broacast though with lockers color commentary...

I just called Comcast. It took them 5 minutes to understand what channel I'm referring to - "Comcast.. personal account?" I had to spell it out for him eventually. They put a ticket in.
Grrr. I guess no sound is better than no picture.

If you are on DirecTV, It's on channel 776, local broadcast (w/ sound) even if you not a center Ice subscriber.

Aldred15 If that is where they were then that is horrible. You cannot change the D until the puck in in the O zone not before it even gets out of the D zone. Boys got to learn from that one.

here's the feed that people would be watching right now in London...you know, if such things were legal: http://www.ustream.tv/channel-popup/s2-00000014

not sure if you guys have discovered this yet, but...

p2p4u.net is another site that streams live sports. Unlike ATDHE, it frequently has more than one stream, so if there is a problem with one there is generally a backup. I prefer it to ATDHE to be honest.

I wonder if the lack of practice today has led to some of the early sloppy play.

Pothier made a mistake behind our net.

Knuble with a horrible giveaway.

A couple of other bad plays in our own end.

What was Sloan doing on the PK?

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 12, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Sloan is touted as versatile but I much prefer him on a checking line up front. He makes me nervous when he's playing defense. I like his speed but he makes a lot of careless plays and often gets out of position.

Posted by: arcassells | January 12, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

Haven't checked everything, but could it do with a certain forecheck setup being ran against our guys?

For example, last year, Boston seemed to be unable to handle a 2-man forecheck from opposing teams. (2-1-2)

Posted by: richmondphil | January 12, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

i dont care about trying to give neuvy confidence by keeping him in, you have to pull him to get the team going

Why? He took a shot off his face through a screen.

And don't tell me you are talking about the rebound on the 3rd goal...he made an amazing toe save and the rebound came straight to stamkos.

The skaters stink tonight, Neuvy's playing good.

Posted by: elicea | January 12, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

@CDon

Perhaps, Neuvirth could have stopped that last one but the source of this chaos is our defense's inability to handle the forecheck. It led to Poti's penalty and it's how that last scoring opportunity that led to a goal started.

It's a problem we've had going back a couple of seasons now. We probably need personnel changes because the current options continually struggle in this area.

Pittsburgh's role players killed us on the forecheck as that playoff series went on last season.

It's nice that we're making a comeback here but I want anybody who doesn't usually focus on our ability to handle the forecheck to pay close attention to this aspect for a few games and give their thoughts.

I'm talking about everything from getting to pucks that are dumped in first to making good decisions under forecheck pressure to simply being able to clear the puck of our zone.

It's a 2-1-2 forecheck. They can't handle it. Other team dumps it..sends 2 deep, we lose battles. Tampa is at least running it, I will pay closer attention to future games.

Here comes a PP...

I've noticed our inability to handle a good forecheck before. It seems our players just don't relish this type of a game.

The Caps' inability to cleanly and smoothly exit out of their defensive zone frustrate me on a nightly basis. I've grown to just deal with the flaw and not lash out every time I see the Caps give up the puck.

What a fitting game for the "trade green" talks to precede.

Posted by: BACKS | January 12, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

@tmac, elicea, et all;

It probably has something to do with our defensemen unable to make a good first pass, minus Green and Pothier, as well.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 12, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

OK, morning skate is over, let's play the game now.

Posted by: zmega | January 12, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Let me know what you think, richmondphil.

The reason I suggest focusing on it for a number of games is that we go through stretch where it looks better than others, obviously.

For instance, Steckel just made a sketchy play behind our goal. It's mostly our defense that I'm talking about but it stretches beyond that.

We simply struggle dealing with an agressive forecheck (or perhaps a certain kind of forecheck as you suggested).

@Jschon from previous thread.

Gordon is an important Penalty Kller. He is underrated and the PK is better with him. He doesn't cost that much. He's the best defensive forward we have, IMO. Sign him. He's 26.

Since I took my disparaging remarks about Schultz back and I'm not an idiot who wants to trade Mike Green, can I please get an official release from the Doofus Brigade? I don't like it there.

Is the hooking penalty on the Caps?

Posted by: MReilly9 | January 12, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

What do the Caps need to do to be a better PK team? It's the one area of their game that's been consistently bad (mediocre, at best) for the last couple of years. The Caps have give up three PP goals on three PP chances. That's Toronto Maple Leafs bad. I know the Caps had been killing penalties at a pretty good clip recently. But they still rank in the last half of the league. I'm wondering what they need to do to be better.

Posted by: MetalCapsFan | January 12, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

I think some of the issues with our PK are related to our inability to handle opposing forechecks.

Whether it's winning battles down low or making good decisions under pressure or simply clearing the puck.

Did we just take a stupid hooking penalty at center ice with only a few seconds left in the period?

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Very weak call on Chimera there to end the period. We NEED this kill at the start of the period or we are in big trouble.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 12, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

@CDon

I think it's a personnel issue.

Boudreau's system requires more d-men that can make good, quick decisions in our own end.

His system would also thrive a lot more if we didn't get pinned in our own end as often by opposing forechecks.

I think we need more speed, skill and grit out of our defensmen. Without some personnel changes, I think we'll continue to struggle on the PK and with opposing forechecks.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

because 80 percent kill is a given for even an average team.. tampa's PP is ranked 20th (17%) and they're NOT even a playoff team.

I'm no expert but I'd say it's a personnel issue.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

if you have a great PK unit, you don't mind taking penalties late in the game when you're up because you can freely ice the puck.

Wow this is getting embarrassing.

Overall just a horrible defensive performance. They just seem so out of it tonight. So many lazy penalties. Unacceptable.

Really sucks that the team worked so hard to get it tied at 4 then Theo lets them down, AGAIN. He can't make ANY big saves. Wrong move to put him in. Neuvirth wasn't great but he was the only one playing in the first. He made some spectacular saves, but obviously gave up 4 but Theo gave up 4 vs. Carolina and didn't get pulled. He should've just stuck with him. I don't think the goalie change sparked them, it was probably some firing up in the locker room.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 12, 2010 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Downie needs to get an instigating call for that one. He started the fight from the first call and by just making it even calls the refs just encourage him to do it again.

I'd be OK never seeing Schultz used in 4-on-4 situations again.

He's just too slow for that much open ice.

I don't intend to bash Schultz but that's not a good situation for him.

Bradley should NEVER be traded! This guy is all team. Just an unbelievable heads up play by him. Hats off for OV to say lets go but even more hats off for Brads to protect the Captain and face of the franchise.

I want brash back! just kidding. I would like to see a minor league enforcer acquired and called up for TB. Downie broke the code.

Posted by: caps512 | January 12, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

We needed the 8 goals in this game instead. Good thing is we get to play again tomorrow but the question is who starts tomorrow. I don't want to see anymore Theodore, sorry.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 12, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

The goalie situation is not the problem with this team.

It's the abilities (or inabilities) of our defensemen.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

It's hard to blame a single player tonight. They were all pretty bad. TB was apparently sick and tired of losing to the Caps and came out ready to win this thing. Neither goaltender--Theo or Neuvirth--was very good. But the D in front obviously wasn't fantastic, either. Forwards generated some pressure in the second but didn't play a solid game from start to finish. Just a whole bad team effort.

Posted by: CDon | January 12, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

If anyone is getting an extra penalty, it's going to be Bradley for 3rd man in.

I agree. I now wish he hadn't pulled Neuvy or at least that he had put him back in the 3d. We all keep thinking that maybe this next time will be the one Theo plays well and, 9 times out of 10, he disappoints. Neuvy made some incredible saves. I believe that even at his worst Neuvy is better than Theo.

Posted by: caraveli | January 12, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

The Tampa announcers may actually be the worst in the league. This is painful to listen to.

I'd largely blame our defensemen for this outcome.

Far more than our forwards or goalies.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

IMO, Brads shouldn't get 3rd man in but even if he does its better than OV gettin potentially beat up.

Posted by: pokerfaceI208 | January 12, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

@ richmondphil. I would say Downie is just as guily for instigating as we were for third man in. He clearly comes out of the box going after OV to start a fight.

How does Bradley get an instigating call??? Horrible just by the officials over the last five minutes letting this game get out of control. I expect to see another fight before the game is done.

I don't know what the assistant coaches are doing or not doing but I'm leaning toward it being an issue of the personnel on the ice.

I get the sense that it's more of an issue of our defensemen and certain forwards not being able to execute what is asked of them.

Our PK had been on fire the last few nights we have one bad night and eveyone talks about firing coaches? We just finished off a streach where we were 33 of 38 short-handed situations in 11 games. We have one bad game. It happens just like times where our PP doesn't click for a few games then gets three one night. Right now this doesn't happen (us giving up more then one PP goal a game) very often so right now it is not a big concern.

Until there's a legit deterrent to the other teams' goons going after Ovie, Semin, Green, etc., running their stars will do little but endanger our top guys more. Leave the guy off the playoff roster if you want, but I'd still like to have the Big Bomber. What happens if Downie knocks out Ovie, or Ovie breaks his hand? Thankfully, Brads was quick to intervene. And now, Ovie gets mugged again. Time to stop being pacifists and protect the investments.

I am surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.

I think that, so far, the lack of a real enforcer hasn't cost us any games, so, maybe GMGM is doing the right thing. I dunno. I'm glad I didn't have to see Ovechkin in a fight, I think. Although I kind of suspect, if he could find a way to land a punch, it would be a pretty good one.

Blech. Terrible and weird weird game. Not sure what was going on with all of the fighting but good decision on Brads part to intervene. Ovi should not be dropping the gloves no matter what. There was a lot of nasty chirping going on but I like how the Caps are standing up for one another. The penalties are just ugh though. This game was lost due to penalties as much as spotty defense. Personally I feel for both goalies--tough night for both Neuvi and Theo.

Well, I don't have to eat my words. They kissed this one goodbye. Considering the number of 'stupid' penalties they took there must have been a lot of "stuff" going on off the puck. Posted by: RusCap | January 12, 2010 10:28 PM | Report abuse

I don't think Theo was any better or worse than Neuvirth tonight.

The defensemen were collectively horrible. They got killed on the forecheck and they were nearly as bad on the penalty kill.

At least 4 of the goals were the result of our inability to handle the TB forecheck.

Poti took a crosscheck because he and his partner were pinned in their own end for way too long.

Green made a careless pass in the corner that led to another goal.

Downie's one-man forecheck caused Morrisonn to turn the puck over which led to Backstrom's boarding call. I'm not justifying Backstrom's penalty but it wouldn't have even happened if Morrisonn didn't cough the puck up after getting to it first.

Another goal was the result of our inability to get the puck out of our own end on the PK when the opportunity presented itself. Eventually, the puck was sent up high and fired in.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Downie got a hooking penalty on the play. Honestly, you can't blame anyone for what went down except for Ovie there. He should know better than to be trying to go against Downie. I know there's this toughness thing but the best thing he can do for the hockey team at that point is to skate away and get the PP. If Downie drops anyway we get 2 PPs (he gets an instigating too), and then Brads is OK stepping in without 3rd man in (because Ovie never drops).

Anybody think that Erskine being out made a difference?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 12, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

It's a long season. This game will be a distant memory a couple of months from now.

Regardless, I would be shocked if we don't see McPhee make at least one move to upgrade our defense befroe the deadline.

I wouldn't even be surprised if there is more than one change.

I think the primary culprit for our PK woes and our inability to handle opposing forechecks over the last few years is the defensive personnel.

I don't think it's Boudreau's system or any other coaching-related issue and I don't think it's the goalies.

For Boudreau's system to go to the next level, he needs more defensemen that can not only prevent opposing teams from pinning us in our own end but also make better and quicker decisions with the puck. Sure, all teams need that but I think it's particularly important for the up tempo style that Boudreau employs.

Other teams that don't play as up tempo have more of a total team effort, defensively. In Boudreau's system, the defensemen are expected to be better at preventing teams from even establishing their forechecks in the first place. I think that requires more speed and skill out of our defensemen. They need to get to more pucks first then make smarter and quicker plays. We could also stand to add more grit so that when we don't get to pucks first, we are able to win board battles and get the puck up to our forwards more quickly.

If we ever get the right upgrades to our defense, the league's best offense will reach even new heights since we'll be spending less time struggling to get out of our own end.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Not a good game by the goalies. I thought both were pretty poor tonight. Would have been interesting to see Ovechkin fight Downie. I'm impressed that Ovechkin took the visor off when he dropped his gloves. But Bradley made the right decision for his team. You aren't going to risk your best player hurting his hand or something. The whole team looked frustrated the entire night. What was with that crosscheck by Backstrom in the middle of the ice?

Posted by: Stu_c | January 12, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

@stevo

I'm saying Erskine hasn't had much practice fighting anytime very recently. He didn't have to fight that much during the Brashear years, and those just ended. He got 3 fighting majors last year and he's had 3 this year. Lots of folks have had lots more practice than him during that time.

I have watched almost every game Steckel has played, and I don't think Steckel had ever been in a fight in the NHL before tonight.

Posted by: youaresquishy | January 12, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Wow, I'm glad I live in Howard and couldn't witness this mess. Great on Brads for jumping in, hey we don't pay Ovi 9M per to fight. I'm back and forth on the "do we need an enforcer" issue and I'm thinking now we need one for select matchups. Can't imagine it will dent the cap space that much. Or call up McNeill from Hershey when needed. Thinking that other teams might attempt similar tactics (FLA did in the last matchup, TOR has Orr/Mayers, and Philly is well...Philly). Not to mention 4 games against Pittsburgh to come.

As for goalie, I'm staying with Neuvy, and I think its important that BB registers faith in him. Varly cannot back fast enough. If it were up to me, I'd never want to see Theo in net. I hate saying that because his personal circumstances are beyond tragic, but he's just not getting it done consistently.

Three things about Ovie not scoring many goals lately:

1) He has Knuble on his line. Knuble reminds me of the kind of animal known as a sloth. Moves in slow motion.

2) He feels he has to do too many other things as captain.

3)Maybe it does not matter becasue the team as a whole is scoring as well as ever.

Looking at the liberties that have been taken with our stars, I agree, run the other teams' stars. However, the Caps better be ready because, with no Big Bombers to protect our top guys (by way of intimidation beforehand or actual violence after the s*** hits the fan), the teams who are loaded for bear will come guns a'blazin'. Even with the instigator rule having been in place for quite a long time, there is still room for good old-fashioned deterrence and post-liberty score settling. It's a shame that Brandon Sugden wasn't kept in the system and is now plying his wares in the KHL:

POSTGAME THOUGHTS: *SOUND OF A FART RIPPING*: that would be the Caps farting out a clunker in Tampa. Yikes. Ugh that stunk.

Goaltending: Neuvirth and Theo were not at fault. Neuvy was left out to dry on his goals and not much Theo could do with his except I didn't see the 7th goal but who cares at that point.

The tone for this game was set from the first goal - the Caps were sloppy getting out of their end and they were begging for disaster.

Tarik - you are partially to blame because at some point after writing that article about lack of penalties - it would come back to haunt the team. I kid I kid but unfortunately this team got back to lazy penalties tonight.

I don't want to hear one bit about not getting on the ice this morning either. Sure it's a snag but oh well. Sh*t's gonna happen during the year.

Downie and the rest of the thugs on that team can suck it up. Downie is lucky he got Bradley instead of Ovie. Would've loved to seen that fight. I like the fire and feistyness. The Caps didn't lay down and take it. Honestly - I don't think it was worth it to some extent. Yea they came out got some breaks and got a win over the Caps for the first time in three years.

Best part - at least this team gets to forget about it quickly and get back on the ice tomorrow night.

A hop skip and a jump to Sunrise, FL to de-claw the Panthers. Time to rebound.

look on the bright side, at least the guys let Neuvy off the hook and Theo got the loss.

here come the idiots saying theo was why we lost.....

Posted by: _stevo
--------------------------------
Stevo - I'll do my best not to call you an idiot. My point is this. Theo has been with this team for almost 2yrs now. Needless to say I think we know what/who he is and isn't. This team has ZERO condidence in him. This has almost been stated by every Cap in various interviews. I'll pull them up if you like me to. To me being down 4-1 to a Lightning team after 1 is not too steep to come back. So we get the game back to 4 before Theo even faces 3 shots I think. So what happens when he gets the 1st legitimate scoring chance on him? Did you see where St. Louis took the shot? Right on top of the Dot. Did you see where Theo was? 2-3 outta the crease. If you know just a smidge about physics St. Louis shouldn't have had any net to see but with Theo pulled way to the inside, St Louis (great shot too) picked the far corner. At that moment there was a hurricane in Tampa that came from the Caps bench. It was everybody exhaling because they'd worked their asses off to get it back and his bone headed play blew it. Do you think all those fights and OV uncharacteristically taking penalties were frustration coming out? Of Course it was but who do you think they were frustrated by? The Elephant in the )(^&(*ing room call Jose 3orFingmore! So don't call me an idiot when this team clearly doesn't want to play for the guy because he give them ZERO chances to win. If you want to argue that fact YOU are the idiot.

@Satts: Yeah, that too. I cringe also when I see Erskine being put in a position where he has to fight.

@elicea: According to ESPN, Steckel got no fighting majors last year. That doesn't mean he wasn't in a minor altercation of some kind, but, I really can't recall ever seeing a real fight involving Steckel, and I think Joe Beninati was saying the same thing tonight.

Current Bear Greg Amadio hasn't played for the Caps yet, but certainly doesn't shy away from the rough stuff:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=49540

Can any of you regular Bear watchers comment on his defensive abilities? In a pinch, if the Caps were anticipating a rough and tumble affair, could he crack the line-up in lieu of, say, Erskine?

the caps cant use the excuse of rather having power plays than an enforcer. Those man-advantages only take you so far when you are down 7-4

haha. no, I'm just really curious if players have really expressed they're lack of confidence in Theo.

WHY is Green being paired with Morrison? He seemed to be working so well with Schultz. Green scored 2 goals tonight and was still -3 (as was Morrison). PUT GREEN AND SCHULTZ BACK TOGETHER!

@elicea: OK, after doing a little research, I found that Steckel had been in 2 NHL fights before tonight--just not any last year and none this year until tonight.

In his first real year (the first year in which he played more than 7 games) he got in two fights. That was 2007-08. Steckel fight #1 was Steckel vs. the Thrashers' Chris Thorburn on November 21, 2007. Steckel fight #2 was Steckel vs. the Wild's Aaron Voros on February 26, 2008. Voros, I believe, currently plays for the Rangers.

@MetalCapsFan and elicea. That's funny that there's a website for this. I had no idea.

www.hockeyfights.com.

I see that it's already updated Steckel's fight card, less than 2 hours after his 3rd NHL fight. They are really on top of things!

Posted by: youaresquishy | January 12, 2010 11:14 PM | Report abuse

Still not clear to me why Stecks got into a fight. Must have been some bad backtalk going on at the faceoff. But I was glad that our team pushed back--not a fan of goons--who needs 'em. We've got Brads!!! Ha ha

Ovi may feel like he has to start protecting himself because he just can't draw a penalty no matter what the opposing team does. But he should NOT be fighting. Seriously I may have to get a Brads jersey!

Put this game in a drawer and forget about it. Let's move on to the Cats!

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | January 12, 2010 11:17 PM | Report abuse

I think Steckel didn't do too terribly in those two fights either, although I don't think he exactly won either of them.

That's a great website there. Thanks MetalCapsFan!

elicea,

Are you calling a bluff on pockerface?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan

Ha Ha. I'll call! This team doesn't talk trash about their fellow players whatever their private feelings may be. Still think we can't hang this bizarre game on the goalies tonight. I'm still scratching my head over the third period. Trash stuff between the teams that wasn't aired must have gone on.

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | January 12, 2010 11:23 PM | Report abuse

Trying to weed through the "sky is falling" posts.

How much did you guys think not having the morning skate affected the team? Personally I think it really got Neuvirth off his groove. Same thing happened in the bad weather Toronto game. Either way that can only exscuse the 1st period. The third period was ATROCIOUS.

PK was nasty too, way too many slot crosses leaving the goalie out of luck.

..that and im ready to trade Green/Schultz/Semin for some real players already...

Posted by: BACKS | January 12, 2010 11:31 PM | Report abuse

Ok, do none of you remember mulitiple interviews last yr during the playoffs on asking why BB changed goalies? Each player interviewed to a man stated "we have confidence in him"! Tarik on many occasions this year has stated the team doesn't have faith in him. I thought you guys actually followed the team? Sorry but I couldn't be more frustrated with Theo and yes I dare say that if Theo was never in the game we probably would've won. That 5th goal just destroyed us. Fought back all the way to tie it and at the end of a period Swiss cheese gives up another one that should have been stopped. Folks I know we didn't have our best game I never stated that we played a great game. My only point is Theo and the teams lack of confidence in him. Those that have played the game or know people who have played the game know what it's like to play with a goalie you have no confidence in. Why bust your ass and try when he's gonna let in the crap goals? And that's exactly what happened tonight.

I thought Semin was the best Cap on the ice, overall.

Posted by: zmega | January 12, 2010 11:33 PM | Report abuse

Semin has been the best Cap on the ice overall since last year began, at least if you ignore the bad penalties, which he's not getting many of this year.

Semin was #1 in the entire NHL last year in points per minute of ice time (minimum 20 games played), and was way up there in +/- per game. Great season last year. Looking good this year.

The Capitals can't beat the Lightning 13 times in a row? What the hell?

What's the Capitals' post-trade record now? 2-4 is it?

Posted by: youaresquishy | January 12, 2010 11:47 PM | Report abuse

@ pokerface

Ok, now I'm calling your bluff.

I think your interpretation of what the team said about Varly in last year's playoffs is off. I'm pretty sure the team saying they had confidence in Valry had nothing to do with their confidence in Theo.

I've never seen Tarik post anything about the team saying they didn't have any faith in Theo. Maybe you can "pull it up" and show me.

The downfall began at the very start of the game. The team left Neuvy out to dry as well-hence the four goals that blew past him. By your logic, you're saying the team has no confidence in Neuvy neither, because they didn't play their best when he was in net.

Posted by: elicea | January 12, 2010 11:47 PM | Report abuse

@pokerfaceI208

Wow you are angry but I think your anger could be spread across the team a bit. I watched every bit of the playoffs last year, every interview and so on. I simply don't remember players or the coach trashing Theo. Sorry I don't. And I am not interested enough to go back and re-listen.

We all hear what we want to hear. Your perception of what the players' and the coach may have said is a valid as mine--the truth is most likely somewhere between.

In general I believe this team is very careful to supportive of each other and I think there is a big difference between statements that a change was made to try Varly out in game two because they could always put the vet back in game three versus Theo sucks and we've completely lost confidence in him.

It's a matter of interpretation IMO.

3-4, ok, but Chimera wasn't playing yet in the first loss, and then the next two losses were on the road on the west coast.

Columbus is 3-2-2 with Clark and Jurcina I think.

Posted by: youaresquishy | January 12, 2010 11:50 PM | Report abuse

I Personally think that the chimera trade has been a success, even though the team was slowfooted the next 3 games. Tonight's result has nothing to do with the trade, more of a bad PK and bad goaltending, on top of the team struggling to start and finish after missing a morning skate and playing on awful ice...

I have a feelind Ovechkin, for good or bad, will be playing like a bat out of hell vs Florida.

Posted by: BACKS | January 12, 2010 11:58 PM | Report abuse

I'll also call the bluff on powerface.

This loss was a team effort. The Caps were short handed for 12:09, on giving Tampa seven power play opportunities and Tampa scored four power play goals. Tampa was short handed for 4:38 on four Caps power plays, and the Caps scored goals on two of them. The Caps did not score on what became the 6 on 3. As far as the goalies, Neuvirth gave up 4 goals on 15 shots and Theo gave up 3 goals on 21. I would suggest that the team left them out to dry.

Posted by: miseaujeu | January 13, 2010 12:06 AM | Report abuse

OK, while I concede that the Caps are very professional and never word for word said they don't like or have confidence in Theo I can't believe I'm the only one to read all the "kind and confidence" comments made about Varly and Neuvy and nothing ever positive about Theo. Better yet, rather than me taking time to find the articles, I'll blow your bluff up! Probably take til tomorrow but this will prove my point.

Youngguns - you're right I'm a little out of character so to say. I was in the ER for 6 hours yesterday with bronchitis and asthma so one of the things they put me on is prednisone which is a steroid. Call it roid rage I guess. I wonder if I could hit 71 home runs!

This is from TEB's Twitter:

Jeff Halpern called Alex Ovechkin's hit on Steve Downie a "dirty hit" because he stuck "his knee out there."

Now I have seen it several times and there is no way his knee was out at all and he clearly hit with his shoulder. Look Tampa you won don't complain too.

@powerface -- It did take until this morning, but I went to bed at midnight. I needed 10 minutes to track down the links. None of them say that there won't be a competition for starts in net, (and I've included Tarik's tweets to that effect), but there do seem to be some recent, positive comments on Theo.

This was in NHL Insider on December 18, 2009
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=510378#&navid=nhl-search

This is the text that appears in the side bar.

In his past five starts after taking a two-week hiatus to deal with personal issues, Theodore is 4-1 with a .927 save percentage and 2.19 goals-against average. For the season, he's 9-4-4 with a .903 save percentage and 2.93 GAA this season.

"You know what, I can't even imagine," Boudreau said of how Theodore is coping through tragedy. "I have four children, so I can't imagine it because I know I wouldn't be able to focus on anything; I would be a mess. He's mentally tough. He has shown a great deal of resolve. He has also really done a great job with Varly (rookie Semyon Varlamov). He has been truly professional in everything that has happened. I'm real proud of him for that.">>>>

In his next start after that quote, Theo gave up 5 goals against Carolina. The 6th goal was an empty net. (The next game, Neuvy gave up 5 goals against the Sharks.) Boudreau has since said they need Theo to play with confidence in order to compete for a starting role when Varly comes back.

(Tarik's tweets in reverse order.) Continued BB on Theo: "If he's not at the top of his game, these two kids are going to push him out."
10:41 AM Jan 6th from web
More BB on Theo: "He understands that these two kids are coming in, and they're playing and they're pushing him."
10:40 AM Jan 6th from web
BB on Theo: "We're going to need Theo to play and we're going to need Theo to play good. We're going to need Theo to get his confidence."

In his next start, Theo gave up 2 goals against Ottawa. In his post game presser, Boudreau said Theo played good and if he'd had had any luck, he would have had a shut out. http://capitals.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?type=fvod&id=849&tab=1 at 1:08
