Go CAPS!!!

Whether you agree or not, it's good to hear Alan May say what he thinks. So many of the guys on NFL or NCAA (or the worst is NASCAR) broadcasts talk and talk and say nothing controversial.

Let's get it done, boyz. I want Ovie to go nuts.

Posted by: cbs75 | March 20, 2010 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Ovie's first game after his last suspension was against Tampa Bay, and he got two goals. I'm hoping for a hat trick this time.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Just heard on Caps radio that Steckel is on 4th line...

Posted by: ralCapsFan | March 20, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

...and that appears to be incorrect

Posted by: ralCapsFan | March 20, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

I think Ovi will have plenty of chances to improve on his goal totals and so will Stamkos... it's all about individual stats for both teams at this point

Posted by: joek443 | March 20, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

know of any links to game?

Kansas is about to be upset by Northern Iowa

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 20, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

What a start. Steckel already got a point lol... didn't think he'd be too effective on that line.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Jeez, we're 24th in PK. Uuuuugly.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 20, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

PK is looking pretty decent so far. Not too many good chances by Tampa Bay, they're being kept to the outside.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

It seems that whoever is put between flash and fehr all of a sudden starts to score. Those two appear to feed off each other well.

Damnit, terrible D.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 20, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Fehr and Flash really started to work well together last season when Federov was their center. Ever since, they've seemed to be able to play as a unit.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

OVI now tied with Crosby - it would be great if he would get one more tonight to take back the goal scoring lead.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 20, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see him bury a breakaway.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 20, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Nitty won't be so great tonight

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Great pass by Backstrom, great rush by Ovie, Nitty went down too early and got beat. I don't know if anything would have stopped Ovie there though.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

That has got to be a terrifying sight for a goalie.

Posted by: chrisd3 | March 20, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Theo's been looking pretty sharp this period. I don't count that goal against him.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 20, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom is ahead of Crosby in points... awesome.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

@mypostdisafake

I don't care who you put in net, a tooter shooter for that matter, nobody is stopping Vinny there. Schultz needs to find his jock and then Vinny. That was just silly.

I typically bash 55. He has been playin better of late but that play was just bad.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 20, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Agreed MyPostIDisAfake. He's faced a lot of good chances so far in the first. Theo's the guy come playoffs.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

I don't think you read that clearly... he said he doesn't count that against Theo.

We can all breathe now.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

I read it correctly. Not Theo's fault and NOBODY could've saved that. You can't leave anybody all alone on top of the crease like that especially Vinny.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 20, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

What's with Ovechkin? Twice on that power play, he fumbled a puck out to neutral ice.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

There should be a penalty for not enough men on the ice.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 20, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

What is with the too many men on the ice calls?

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

pokerface1208: Oh okay. Yeah, 55 was lost there.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

ccCapsfan

I agree. Miscommunication for sure. My only guess is that with all the new guys on board there's some miscommunication going on and guys not quite 100% sure of their roles yet. I'm with ya tho, I thought it was just me.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 20, 2010 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Big stupid mistake there. 1 minute of PP time with fresh ice and a fresh Ovie just wasted.

Posted by: Raber | March 20, 2010 8:17 PM | Report abuse

The Tampa fans boo Ovi, I assume because they think he is dirty. That's hilarious given that they are coached by Rick Tocchet and have goons up and down their lineup.

Posted by: zmega | March 20, 2010 8:18 PM | Report abuse

They probably boo Ovie for the same reason Pens and Flyers fans do - because they're jealous.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Everyone boos Ovi.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 20, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Get Ovi off the point on the PP and don't let him play the two full minutes... the PP clicks at over 40 percent when he doesn't play

I'm not saying they don't need him but he's gotta get off the ice after about a minute

Posted by: joek443 | March 20, 2010 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I don't know why, but it annoys me when they boo Ovi. I'm sure it doesn't bother him in the least.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

@Raber

I'm asking that same question -- what's with the "too many men on the ice" calls.

And now a 4-4 (uggh!) and another TB PP (more uggh!)

It seems like we've either been in PK (or just look like we are on PK since we've been in the D zone a lot).

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 20, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

So far, Steckel has looked pretty good between Flash and Fehr. With his face-off skills you might see Fehr get more goals off the draw.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Flash made a nice jab at that puck to score but Steckel made that whole play happen. First he gained the zone and passed the puck to Flash who promptly lost it. Steckel then steals it back to pass it over to the right wing (fehr?) who makes a nice simple pass to the front of the net. Steckel really has some versatility, he can play easily on lines 3 and 4 and can be put up on a 2nd line in a pinch if needed

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Harsh but true.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Here's what I don't get about Steckel. He is one of the best face-off men in the league. That suggests he has superior hand/eye coordination. But, when the puck is near him when he is moving he is incredibly slow to react to it and loses EVERY battle for a loose puck.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Kenopka leads the league with now 25 fighting majors.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 20, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Tampa plays us pretty loose, they just go out and play their game without being too fearful. Tocchet's got them playing well. On paper we should be blowing them off the rails.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Face-offs have a lot more to do with just hand/eye coordination. And a lot of the time it comes down to your wingers pitching in.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 20, 2010 8:37 PM

First, faceoffs are about much more than just hand-eye coordination - there are little tricks that Steckel is very good at. Second, he wins most of the battles for loose pucks that he is in.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

unfortunately Walker is the only forward we have who can even match up with Konopka. Sad because Konopka is only considered a middleweight.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

good point, when your wingers pitch in they can jump on a loose faceoff puck and you get credit for the win. All you have to do is tie up the faceoff and have one of your wingers jump in to get that puck

@timmyv38: You and I must be talking about different players. But, guys, while I agree that there is plenty of technique involved and your wingers are important, I would think that it is at least a necessary condition that you have good hand/eye to be that good on faceoffs. But, honestly, watch him when there is a scramble in open ice. He never wins them.

To the people berating Schultz, there was also a play in the first where his calm positional play tied up the stick of a streaking Stamkos on a 2 on 1. He's not always effective, but he's effective most of the time. The +/- stat shows that.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | March 20, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

bro i started that position :)

Schultzie doesn't understand that there are times you need to actually engage another player aggressively. He's a mental wuss. And he'll burn us with any plays that require him to clean house in that crease. He has no crease awareness, when players are fighting for a puck #55 is looking around for a beach umbrella to sit under. I'm so glad he didn't play last yr in the playoffs for us. It was bad enough watching Green give way to Crosby. We woulda given up a few more goals the same way with Sarge on the ice

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

And Schultz just blocked that shot by Stamkos. He's like the only D who does a good job blocking shots.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Raber | March 20, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is not, and probably never will be, a physical dman. Doesn't make him bad, just makes him a non-physical dman. But he blocks more shots than anyone else on the Caps, backs up a dman who far too often leaves him stranded by going in on the offensive rush (and still leads all NHL dmen in +/-), and has gotten good at tying guys up along the boards. True, last season he hadn't developed into the defensive player he is now, but he is the best defensive dman on the Caps.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 20, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

I'm with the group that says lay off Schultz already. He's not Rod Langway, but he does a lot of really good things. The plus/minus is not a total mirage.

Solid in front of our goalie creating a screen, lets Green do the work behind the net, defensemen need to hit. They need to clean out the slot. He's 6'5 and hits like a girl. When he's out there, don't watch the play watch him.

Wouldn't doubt it. Seems like it goes the other way as well. When we put up monstrous shot numbers, we lose.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 20, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

We win 64.5% when outshot, according to NHL.com. Of course, we win 69.2% when outshooting.

Yeah. Broken ankles, broken ribs, broken pride. Either way his positioning is good but his finesse way of thinking/playing isn't at a time he needs to actually use his big body.

Posted by: visionof75 | March 20, 2010 9:06 PM | Report abuse

OK. Now if they are consistent, Tampa should get the offsetting roughing call.

theo's stealing this one so far.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 20, 2010 9:06 PM | Report abuse

this whole Schultz thing always goes round and round so lets be clear. His play in front of his goalie is putrid, his crease awareness is non-existent. His play further away from the net is much better. In the reg season the intensity isn't as ramped up so the # of times his passiveness around our crease area isn't as big an issue and his overall play overshadows that weakness. But in the playoffs you tend to get more action around the net and nothing I've seen from that big lug shows me he wants anything to do with goalmouth scrums.

cstanton - you are missing one major fact about his play in front of the net. He is the best shotblocker on the Caps. He has gotten very good at positioning his legs and skates to block shots. His main weaknesses - he is fairly slow and not physical.

Or Schultz could be like Poti, taking a dumb retaliatory penalty.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

@visionof75: It could be purely random, but it may have to do with the cheapshot Brads took from Downie earlier in the year. I suspect they don't want him going out of his way to get at Downie.

If you don't play like Ovechkin (either by scoring goals or hitting people) you are apparently on the bad list of some of the posters here. I wonder how effective the Caps would be if we had 3 Mike Greens and 3 John Erskines on the team on Defense?

actually the best shotblocker is on the bench - Laing

Erskine used to block a lot of shots but he kept breaking bones in his feet.

This game. So far Tampa is outshooting Caps. Getting many more PP opportunities. Somehow, the Caps are ahead.

Okay Caps, better third period. Insure the win.

3 Greens and 2 Oisks would be too many. But we need the Mike Green that we got.

We also need guys with different skill sets to really make a good defense. Not too many of the same type.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 20, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

lol... true, Laing is a better shotblocker. I'd actually forgotten about him, probably because he almost never plays - which I think is somewhat unfortunate. But Schultz still has the most blocks.

That's the 2nd boarding call we've received tonight and both times the Tampa players TURNED right as we were gonna hit them. Bad call the 1st time, terrible call the 2nd time. Unreal!

why is being physical suddenly equate simply to a John Erskine ? Plenty of teams have defensemen who are way better than Erskine who also play physically around the net.

my preference would be that all our defensemen show more crease awareness and urgency. Schultz is just a puss. No two ways about it. Luckily he's good enough in other aspects of his game to somewhat make up for his lack of mental tenacity. But there is excuse for a player his size to not do a fiercer job of protecting his goalie

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

i wonder if we played Tampa in the playoffs, how that series would go? I'd say no guarantees we'd win even though we're a ton more talented. If they had stellar goaltending I'd think the series could go 7 games either way.

I love how Ovi uses the phrase "pretty good". Normally you would take that phrase to be sort of faint praise ("Crosby? He's pretty good."), but he uses it the way a lot guys use "sick".

Remember Schultz got benched in the playoffs last year when Callahan undressed him and broke his ankles (almost literally).

Posted by: visionof75 | March 20, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

that was Dubinsky right? and Sarge had a hurt rib. He was pretty damn bad the previous yr when he briefly played v the Flyers though. And I think he was banged up then too. He's just too meek. No reason why he can't play positionally when he needs to and then show a sense of urgency and physicality when he needs to. I've seen players 5ft8 show more grit around the crease area than Schultz. I blame the Caps too, they don't seem to press him on this issue

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 20, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Of course, any kind of crazy thing can happen in the NHL playoffs, but based on the evidence of the year, there is not much chance that Tampa would get stellar goaltending.

what about the previous year when Hartnell and Upshall completely abused our goalie?

other teams know their best chance to beat the Caps is to get a little rough with our skill players and get a little rough in the crease. The Flyers had nothing going for them until the midway point of gm 2 (2 yrs ago) and then they ran our goalie. That changed the tone of that series because it helped them generate some offensive chances which they weren't doing before.

18 games now with no regulation loss if I'm not mistaken--yes Theo is playing very well indeed. He was in the zone.

I never heard whether Walker was okay--just saw that the forward lines were mixed up after that.

Love seeing Ovi's face back on top in points and goals. All is right with the world again. Interestingly Nicky is 3rd in both points and assists. He's doing a pretty good job of sneaking up there. How he manages to fly under the radar outside of Caps-land when he is so high in the standings is beyond astonishment to me. He is my favorite player of this season.

Sort of an up-and-down game for me. Thought they dominated much better in the third. TB sure has some scoring threats. Hopefully TB can build the team around Stamkos--he's pretty amazing. Team is a little bit thuggy for me but it would be nice to build a good rivalry with them. Right now I think the rivalry is felt more by them and the Canes rather than us with them--kinda like the Pens use to say about the Caps.

Well, hope the guys get some practices in and Bruce set some serious lines for the game against the Pens. That one will be intense.

The guy I call "chihuahua" is a career AHL'er who was acquired to be the backup to Neuvy (who's played more with the Caps than with Hershey) and then Holtby was called up and he just took off, essentially playing during most of their winning streak in December (with a spot start by Varly in there).

And now with Holtby and Neuvy both in Hershey, "chihuahua" is odd man out. But now Neuvy is injured -- again.

1. Ovi should apologize and I think he did as soon as it happened...
BC wanted a phone call not a public apology.

2. you need to lay off whatever it is that you're drinking or taking

LMAO

it's NO wonder that hockey is a MINOR league sport... and always will be with moronic "fans" like you who would actually blame the guy who just had his season ENDED

Brian Campbell is an NHL hockey player and as far as I can see, he's no scrub player... and YOU are gonna tell him how to play the game because you played some BUSCH league hockey???

NOW THAT'S FUNNY!!!!!!!!
