Tonight's Lineup: Caps at Lightning
Simeon Varlamov will make the third start of his NHL career tonight at St. Pete Times Forum and is expected to oppose Mike McKenna as the Caps go for the ninth straight win over the Bolts. Donald Brashear (knee) and John Erskine (healthy) are out, as is Boyd Gordon (lower body). The rest of the lineup should look like this (though it won't be confirmed until warm-ups):
Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Laich-Nylander-Kozlov
Laing-Steckel-Bradley
Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Pothier
Schultz-Jurcina
If anything changes, I'll post an update before the game. If not, I'll have some postgame notes and quotes afterward.

why Kozlov of the third line???
Posted by: FrankM73 | March 19, 2009 5:56 PM | Report abuse
1) /Ccan one make the assumption that since Laing had to clear waivers to be promoted that Gordon isn't injured, but a healthy scratch?
2) It took to long for them to make this move. Laing has more PK ability than Gordo, and both lack and offensive finish. Now if they wil finally promote Alzner and sit Schultz!

UGH - Schultz and Juice on a line again? How many losses in a row does it take to convince BB that these guys suck worse when paired together. It's almost as bad as Schultz Erskine.
I still think we'll win today - I'm just predicting at least 1 goal because of an inability to move the puck outside the zone by Schultz and Jurcina

Hopefully Varly's night goes the same way as Michal's did when he played in Tampa, we were also facing Mike McKenna, I wouldn't mind the same result as last time. :) Go Caps & VARLYYYYYYY!

Laich-Nylander-Kozlov ???
That's one cluster frack of a line right there...
Laich will sit in front of the next. Nyles will turn in circles. And Kozy will...well I'm not sure what Kozy will do on this line.
This should be...well...an interesting experiment.

patrone, that line scored last game....

Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
I don't love this line either now that I'm thinking about it. Fehr is better when he's got someone else on the line who will shoot the puck. Fleischmann always deeks and Fed's is there for puck control. If I were BB (haha I wish!) I'd try putting Fehr out with Ovie and moving Semin to the second line.

@richmondphil
They scored because of lapse in the D. Nyles had a wide open pass to Kozy for a quick wrister if I remember correctly. How often can we expect Kozy to be left alone right in front of the slot?
The panthers game was just awful. Pathetic even. We'd have scored 7 or 8 if we wern't playing defense first hockey. I understand why we played that way - it was a necessary statement - but still - the Panthers were just BAD.

Strike that last one.
My lines would be
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Kozlov
Laing-Steckel-Bradley

How can BB complain that no one is creating traffic in front of the net when he puts AO, Semin and Backstrom on the same line?
Posted by: Gumpper | March 19, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse
I like those lines. Nylander needs to play with other slow, methodical players. He and Kozlov might work well together. They can cycle down low on the right side and look for Laich in the slot. (Kozlov is going to have to shoot, though, to make it work.) Plus they are all responsible in their own zone. It isn't a classic third line, but it might work.
I also think those could well be our playoff defense pairings, assuming BB is too nervous about Schultz's inexperience to put him with Green. Poti and Pottsy are a very good match.

@fauxrumors, After the trade deadline, players can only be called up to replace an injured player if there are no healthy scratches for that position. In order to call Laing up and have him play, we would have to have two injured forwards. One wouldn't work since we have 13 forwards. I think its safe to assume the League keeps an eye on "injuries" that require call-ups this time of year.

@patrone -
Fehr on the top line didn't work before, but who knows if they tried it again.
How about some nicknames for tonight's D pairs:
1 - "Top Line"
2 - "Pot Line"
3 - "Slug Line"

Why do the Capitals need traffic in front of the net for the OV-Backis-Semin line? Traffic gets in the way for those guys.
It's the other lines that need traffic in front ... i.e. Laich, Fehr, Steckel, etc.

the koz-nyls-laich line got their forecheck established a lot more than the top line that game. they looked okay, nyls is weak still but i think there is potential for chemistry here.
it wasnt a lapse in D, it was a line change. Nyls had the puck, turned and saw kozlov coming off the bench and fed it where kozlov would go. Everyone said it was a blind pass, but if you watch the replay, nyls is looking at kozlov before he passes it. Kozlov wasnt really open, their D man was switching over to guard Kozlov and was right in his face after a few feet over the blue line, but Kozlov's shot was just perfect and went in with help of Laich's commotion at the crease.

Exactly, When Semin curl and drags around a forward, dekes around both defenders and is going in for his patented, forehand-backhand-forehand topshelf rip on the glove side, I don't wanna see OV standing in his way, haha

These should be our playoff lines with the exception of Schultz for Erkine.

I would like to see how our D does without Schultz in the line up

Greetings from London UK. It seems that atdhe.net does not show Caps tonight. Is there any other site to watch the game?
Posted by: fnralch | March 19, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse
atdhe never shows the Caps games (they used a while back), it's very strange. They show almost every other game.
Posted by: Moose33 | March 19, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse
atdhe was showing gamecenter streams until NHL.com bitc#ed about it. Now they just try to find normal streams.
This link should work tonight:

In fact they scored twice. Looks like it is the best combination for Nyls. Hope it works again.

Moose
Before, there always were the gamecenter streams, any game, any time.
Now, if nobody is streaming, there's nothing to post, atdhe can't invent something that isn't there lol

Poti-Pothier scares me. Erskine's been playing well lately. If anyone should be sitting its Poti based on his play over the past few weeks.

Laich-Nylander-Kozlov
Tarik,
I remember you said that Nyls was good with Jagr because they both did circles and then... boom, goal! got connected...
I suggested to put Kozlov and Nyls two circle guy and maybe they'll connect like Jagr and Nyls.
Did you relay it to Coach Boudreau?
....
