Defense
Schultz-Green

What's the point in bringing in Walker and creating this logjam of forwards if he's going to be scratched all the time? Wow, way to reward him for his hard play Bruce...

Good test tonight in a top goaltender without the ultimate offensive weapon!

Will Nicky Backs play hero again?

Interesting to see Corvo on the 3rd line. I was just responding to one of richmondphil's posts in the last thread and mentioned how Corvo looks like a 3rd pairing defenseman at best so far.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 16, 2010 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Both Sloan and Laing in? God love Laing but Steckel should be in. I wish Bruce would stop the player roulette now. There is still something to play for. The Caps are 5 points ahead of San Jose and the Caps could finish first in the league and get home ice all the way in the playoffs. There are still no throw away games.

Posted by: NovaCath1 | March 16, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

The other day you mentioned you didn't like Ovechkin's contract. What exactly don't you like about it? Is it the length and the fact that we didn't frontload it like a lot of other teams have been doing recently? Or is it something else?

Also, what do you think Backstrom's contract is going to end up looking like?

And do you think it's Backstrom's agent delaying the signing getting done sooner than later? I assume that is the case and while it hurts the Caps from a cost perspective, his agent is obviously doing the right thing for both he and Backstrom.

I LOVE it when we have a pregame show.

I like Smokin Al and Alan May.

Also I have never heard before, what Locker said clearly. That the criteria is...

INJURY, INTENT, HISTORY

That being the case, I get the suspension. Now all I want to see is consistency.

AND THATS ALLLLLL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT!!!

DROP DA PUCK!!!!!

According to NESN, Colin Campbell will sit down with Mike Milbury about the Ovechkin suspension and lack of Matt Cooke suspension. LOL. Are you serious? This conversation should be a hoot between these two dummies.

I think the Semin-bashing going on during and after the last game was completely ridiculous.

I think he's probably been our best forward since the Olympic break, regardless of what type of numbers he's put up.

He was the only one of our Olympians that showed no hangover and has been working his tail off in all 3 zones.

Neither of his penalties in the last game were of the lazy variety. He was being overly aggressive and they were in the offensive zone but every player makes mistakes.

Semin has been playing great and I hope he keeps it up tonight.

when semin skates around with no purpose - he does not attract any attention from the opponent. if he plays hard he doesn't need to put up points to be effective

Man, tremendous goaltending at both ends.

Vokoun's save on Liach was particularly huge given the score of the game.

A bit unfortunate on that goal. Semin was trying to collect the pass up the middle on the line change but couldn't control it and Florida turned it around quickly.

I guess you could say he tried to do too much but mistakes happen.

"I guess you could say he tried to do too much but mistakes happen."

He tried the only thing he could do on a not very good pass. It was high, to a guy that was double teamed. I would say bad decision on the pass.

Posted by: GoCaps08 | March 16, 2010 6:54 PM | Report abuse

The point was to make sure we had plenty of extra players in case we run into injury issues during the playoffs. Last year we had Nylander play 3 games and Jay Beagle play 4 games. The Caps wanted to make sure they had NHL players ready to go if they were needed in the playoffs.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 16, 2010 8:11 PM | Report abuse

That's probably a goal if he the defenseman doesn't move the net.

Man, Backstrom gives one right back.

Theo was incredible this period. He probably could've stopped that one but there was a breakdown on the line change in front of him.

Theo made a few saves that a goalie probably shouldn't make so he more than made up for it.

Vokoun did rob Laich though. Both goalies have been terrific.

Posted by: nimes1 | March 16, 2010 8:10 PM

That's a good argument, too. I was just trying not to sound to pro-Semin.

They needed to get that puck deep for the line change one way or the other. Whether the defenseman made the wrong play or Semin failed to just deflect it deep, Theo was far from the only one to blame on that goal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 16, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

He made two huge plays early but he does make a lot of AHL-caliber decisions out there on a regular basis.

He has speed and brings physicality but his decision-making is too often a liability.

That's exactly what I've been seeing and why it's particularly frustrating to have seen some of the comments about him during and after last game.

He's been playing hard and smart in all 3 zones for the most part.

While Ovechkin and Backstrom came out of the break slow, Semin was quite the opposite.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 16, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Fehr hasn't let down since the break either.

In my opinion, the most improved forward this season goes to either Laich or Fehr.

I'd probably lean toward Laich but Fehr is right behind him.

I suppose Schultz has to be the improved defenseman. I don't think there is anybody else even in the discussion on that end.

Consistency (or rather lack thereof) is what puts/keeps you in the AHL (especially on Defence). I don't really like Sloan in the rotation up here. But I trust in BB and GMGM.

Was Ovie drinking a beer?

Posted by: cbs75 | March 16, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

I would assume the A is a trickle down affect due to Ovi missing the game. Who is wearing the C?

Posted by: BACKS | March 16, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

ideally, if OVie could play less 20 min a game, we'd be in great shape. If lines 2-4 can hold their own, we are going to be VERY hard to beat 4 out of 7, even with an average d.

Even up against a hot goalie, 3 lines generating solid chances, and the floode gates will open.

Be afraid, NHL. Be very afraid. The Cap is gonna getcha.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 16, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Amazingly, no Cap is better than +1 and there are a couple of -1s.

Theo has saved us at least a couple of goals against even though he let in at least one softie. He's been terrific.

Even the Vokoun got pulled, he also made a couple of incredible saves.

If not for great goaltending at both ends, the score could be something like 10-5 right now.

I read the comments above about Backstrom's contract. Does anyone know what the status is? Are they talking? I know he is restricted, but does it bother anyone else that a deal has not been done?

Posted by: jackstraaw | March 16, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

I suspect Corvo will soon get used to the Capitals' playbook and his responsibilities thereunder. Corvo is much better offensively than Pothier, that's the reason GMGM got him, and it's OK if he's a little bit worse defensively than Pothier, in my opinion.

One way to be a great team is to have a great offense, a great defense, and a great goalie. But I think, at least historically speaking, there have been great teams with ridiculous offenses, OK defenses, and OK goalies. I think that's what BB and GMGM are going for here, at least this year.

Not at all. Backstrom's value isn't really going up each and every game. He is a franchise, corner-stone player. His value will fall between 6-7 mil. I doubt he is holding out for any real reason, so we will see him dot the line soon. I'm thinking right after the playoffs...that way he doesn't have to deal with it until after all the games are done.

Assuming he plays every game remaining in the season, he will end up having missed 10 games. I wonder how many people have ever led the league in goals and points despite missing as many as 10 games?

I'd bet they are just waiting until after the season is all done, playoffs included. Having to worry about a contract is a burden unneeded during that time. You frequently see corner-stone RFAs get locked up right after they get eliminated if they haven't signed already. (Unless they are holding out for some reason, but there is no reason to think that...)

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 16, 2010 7:08 PM |

Just saw this. I was watching the game out for the first two periods.

I don't like having the highest cap hit in the league, is what I don't really like about it. (Doesn't Vinny make more now though? Like 10 mil/yr or something I think..) Another question I have is is Ovi going to be worth 9.5 mil/yr in 10 years? I would think so, but with Ovi's game, he could burn out like other superstars who played with a non-stop physical game. (Forsberg, Lindros)

I think Back's will get 6-7 years at 6-7 mil/yr, probably closer to 7 mil. But who knows...GMGM might pull another long-term'r. I wouldn't complain.

As far as for the delay, I don't think there is anything to worry about. Like I said, I wouldn't be shocked if the contract was already basically drawn up, and they are just waiting until after the playoffs to talk to Backstrom about it. Contract extensions can be quite the distraction.

I keep saying it but if Flash could just have a little bit more composure on his scoring chances, he could easily be putting up 10-15 more goals per season.

He's a great player but I don't think any player on the team has whiffed or fallen down on more on shots at wide open nets this season and last.

He's one small step from going from good to great in terms of scoring.

It made me think that Ovi was dumb for not using an agent.

For all I know, Ovi outnegotiated GMGM. I doubt it, but what do I know? Not much, that's what.

That +80 goal differential the Caps have as of this moment, if they ended the season with it, would be the highest season-ending goal differential in the NHL since 2005-2006 (that year Detroit was +96 and Ottawa was +105).

That was the year Carolina (+34 during the regular season) beat Edmonton (+5 during the regular season) in the finals. Detroit lost in the first round and Ottawa lost in the second.

Caps' goal differential now down to +79.

Ok, so I know I may be forever hated for saying this, but I have to be objective.

I have watched every game this year, and to me this team plays more disciplined and sound hockey without OVI. I don't know why. Maybe they just feel they need to play smarter without him.

Nonetheless, (and here is the part you are going to kill me over), I like this team's play tonight and the other games without OVI as far as a deep playoff run.

I AM NOT SAYING THIS TEAM IS BETTER WITHOUT OVI. I am saying that when OVI returns, they have to keep this type of play going, and OVI needs to adopt it as well. All to often OVI will not be consistent with the backcheck and even the forcheck.

Without OVI, I think this team would still go very deep.

Just my opinion.

Even if the agent isn't thinking it, having statistics like the 55+ in his firt 3 seasons to match Gretzky and Stasny can't hurt the cause.

I know very little about contract stuff, that's why I like hearing input from other folks.

I do recall Jurcina's agent citing his hit total as a reason to give him extra money.

It's probably not going to happen but if Backstrom gets really hot down the stretch, he could win an award or two. That's unlikley but...

I'd have to think an Art Ross and/or a Hart would influence the contract negotiations.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS: Well that game just sucked. I mean where has the offense disappeared to? LMAO :D Kidding kidding. Wow - that was a good ole fashion south FL ass whuppin. Opened up a tank.

Kudos to the guys for stepping up. There is a poster whose name I forget mentioned that when Ovi is back in the lineup that he adapts to the style of play this team puts on like the system tonight. Don't get them wrong - they are spot on. This team is continuing to play strong with or without Ovi.

Theodore continues strong play in goal andd made some key saves in the early going that allowed the floodgates to open. Brooksie would've had a hat trick if not for the ole double stack pancakes save by Vokoun in the first.

A great effort and the team is healthy.

It's on to Carolina - got to nut up on Thursday as the Canes will put a better effort than the one against Boston tonight.

It's been a two point night.

I don't believe for a second that SJ is tanking to avoid an opponent.

First of all, they don't even know who the 8th seed will be at this point. The standings are still too volatile to make that prediction.

Secondly, no coach and no team with cup aspirations plays to lose hockey games.

The Sharks have already cut the lead in half and the Stars are weak defensively this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sharks come all the way back in this game.

Capitals can play and win without OV. But how long? Without Ovechkin Capitals is just another team even with Backstrom. Some fanz having doubt about OV. OV is good for Capitals and NHL. Remember how boring was before OV entire league. Get rest come back > old self. OV's MGL Fan

Well, that put a dent in the Sharks' comeback plan.

They had a PP to cut the lead to 1 and the Stars score a real nice shortie.

Lehtonen just made a huge save on Heatley. It looked like a gimme when Heatley went to the backhand but Lehtonen somehow got his toe on the puck. Heatley still should've put it in the net.

Man... maybe I need to badmouth Caps players more. I say Gordon should be sat, he gets a goal the next game. I say BMo should be sat, he gets a goal and 2 assists. What the heck?

What is with BMo and the Panthers? 4 goals and 5 assists in 6 games against them, 8 goals and 22 assists in his other 62 games. He picked a great day to have an awesome game though. Incredible game all-around by the Caps, great way to show we aren't a one-man team.

The Caps made a dramatic jump from 6th worst to 7th worst PK after tonight's effort.

Wow, the Stars get another shortie just a few minutes later. Ribiero was involved in both of them.

It was a statement game for the Caps tonight and the statement they made was, "Take that, Mr. Campbell."

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 16, 2010 10:55 PM | Report abuse

7-2 Stars.

It's getting ugly for SJ.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 16, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Can you put your pulled goalie back in? Panthers-esque performance by SJ.

So which player will you bad mouth before the Carolina game?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 16, 2010 10:57 PM | Report abuse

@stevie

I'm not sure if you're just being sarcastic but yes, you can put a pulled goalie back into the game.

They obviously won't do it though at this point.

Ribiero, again.

8-2

I'd hate to be the team that plays SJ in the next game.

Win or lose, SJ will be playing with serious intensity.

Ahh, it's Vancouver. That could be an interesting game.

Kari Lehtonen didn't have it easy tonight, either. He made a number of huge saves and actually looked like a 2nd overall pick. The Sharks had nearly 50 shots on goal.

lol. Maybe my boy Brads... been almost 2 months since he got a goal. And only 3 assists during that time. Plus, he has yet to have a point or a positive +/- against Carolina this season. He needs to step it up lol.

Stupid double posting.... my bad.

I was just looking at the NHL team stats - goals/game in particular. The Caps (3.90) are .64 goals/game ahead of second place, Vancouver (3.26). That is the same as the gap between Vancouver and Tampa Bay (2.62) - who is 20th in that stat. It just shows the sheer offensive dominance of the Caps this year.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 16, 2010 11:44 PM | Report abuse

Good statement game. I thoroughly enjoyed their dominance. I thought the guys looked p*&$ed and played hard. Good hitting. They were disciplined and energetic too but they also had some 22 minutes of wealth to spread around. Everyone got more ice time to strut their stuff.

Funny thing about finishing checks. I saw this in a fanpost at Japers' rink with pics. One of the Hawks checked ShaMo from behind near the net but ShaMo dumped the puck to safety behind the net and was checked straight into the boards. No harm no foul and very check similar except that ShaMo didn't try to reverse the puck or fall while being checked. Can't say to the force involved and it's true that Ovi is strong. But just saying....! I found it interesting.

@Capsyoungguns, thanks for referencing that Japers' rink blog about Ovechkin's hit being common place during every game:

http://www.japersrink.com/2010/3/16/1376591/on-finishing-checks-post-ovechkin

After looking at the pictures and recalling many similar hits in other games by other players of other teams, these "checks" behind the back of an opposing player with their "Jersey Numbers" in full display are indeed common occurrences! In fact, re-watching the Ovechkin/Campbell incident totally re-affirm that Campbell indeed just got his skates stuck in an awkward position and collided to the boards at an odd angle (a total accident!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14oUVVTY05s

Again, just inconsistent officiating and interpretation of the actual rules. If the officials were to apply the boarding rule, then all those "checks" behind the back beyond 4 feet of the boards should all be penalties! What the Capitals should do now is if there is even a hint of someone trying to "finish their checks", they should just fall down and cry like "Sidney" and see if they can get a major as well as a game misconduct out it. Wait, that is what Soccer players do all the time...forget it, the Capitals will never stoop that low!
