Tonight's Lineup: Caps at Panthers

The Caps will definitely have Mike Green and Sergei Fedorov back in the lineup tonight, Coach Bruce Boudreau confirmed. Brian Pothier will be a healthy scratch, though Boudreau said he was pleased with his performance in the second half of Monday's agme and the plan is to play the veteran defenseman regularly down the stretch.

Jose Theodore, meantime, will start in goal and is expected to oppose Tomas Vokoun.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Laich-Nylander-Kozlov
Steckel-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Erskine-Poti
Schultz-Jurcina

If anything changes during warmups, I'll post a new lineup. Otherwise, look for some postgame notes and quotes later tonight.

anybody pay much attention to Pothier last night...I have read some on him, but didn't catch the game. Is he the puck moving dman we need? I read somewhere that he was our ice time leader b4 injury.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Theodore gets the start? I suppose after last nights shelling, there might be a goalie controversy if Varlamov came in a starred tonight. Granted, my faith in Theo is limited, but it is a little late in the season to risk a goalie controversy.

Posted by: noptov | March 17, 2009 6:30 PM | Report abuse

@noptov

starting varlamov in the 2nd game of a two-games-in-one-night series in march with a rookie goaltender would NOT start goalie controversy.

i'm 100% that theodore doesn't think that varlamov will take over as the starter this season, nor does varlamov think he will take over the starting role.

Go Caps! :) 6 goals tonight, to make up for last night.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 17, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Pothier was exactly what I expected: didn't skate too great (IMO), fumbled the puck, nothing special. Exactly what he was before the injury.

me too. That line basically runs on how hard Semin is willing to work down low. If he's on his game, that line does well. If he's not on his game, that line becomes a run and gun line that causes grief for our defense and goalie. Semin has little idea on how to hold his lane and not let the puck easily squirt thru back out to the neutral zone.

I only got to see a little of the game last night via that cool-but-unreliable streaming link posted on the Live Blog here. Pothier looked OK to me - for better or worse he seemed to keep trying to make awfully long passes up ice from behind the net. I think he might've been better off "keeping it simple," as they say.

I think passing judgement on someone who spent 14 months recovering from concussion and then vision problems and has had zero time at the NHL level in that time is a little, well, insensitive. But there's no crying in hockey! :D

Welcome back, F-Bomber line. Hope that gets Flash and Fehr reignited. They need a good center.

Also, we hope Kozzie can score on the Laich and Nylander line as he did against Detroit. Let's hope Kozzie can get that group reignited.

Let's hope the OBS gang can do well even though their D has been off as of late.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 17, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

It's too bad that Aucoin cannot replace Nylander. I get that the Aucoin cannot play without the Caps losing a roster move (emergency move for Feds being ill), but Nylander has stunk up the joint -- a wuss along the boards, slowing down breaks, sucky on the faceoffs, slow to recover on the backcheck, near useless on the forecheck, and passing when he should shoot. Aucoin is trying hard and has skills.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | March 17, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

It is WAY too early to pass judgement on Pothier. He is not a bad defenseman at all. He's a smart player, who makes very good passes and reads plays well. Before the injury, he was the most tenured guy on the blueline and that says something (it says our blueline was weak and he wasn't supposed to be a number 1-2.
{o). If Pothier stays healthy, he will help a lot. Is he physical? NO. Does he dish out big hits? No. But when GMGM picked him up, he was coming off a very high octane Ottawa team and was +29. He's not a tool. Is he the answer? No.

6-1 Panthers, but the Caps will have 84 shots on goal tonight.

not trying to be hard on pothier, I was curios how he looked as I dropped VS network cause I got center ice. I looked forward to seeing him cause I have read that he could be a solid top 4 d for us.

How did he do at faceoffs last night?

How much you wanna bet we make Vokoun look like the best goalie ever tonight, with 45+ saves? We seem to always make average goalies look great cause nobody stands in front of the friggin' net and the goalie can see everything.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 17, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Vokoun is probably the most underrated goalie in the league. I would go as far as saying top 5.

he would easily put up better numbers if he wasnt on the team which faced the most shots/game.

Worst McPhee DRAFT CHOICE EVER = Jeff Lucky

P UUU K E

Typical GM draft pick-> Small speedy forward who didn't compete hard in the tough areas because he had no heart.

He should have just picked up Jordin Tootoo insetad

How many of you so called caps fans remember or know that? not many i would presume, most of you sound like you're fairly new to the game. No efin sens of history. Its you sirs who are the trolls. Begone!

Posted by: maven1918 | March 17, 2009 6:05 PM

lucky was a 4th rounder. a crap shoot. how about jomar cruz goalie, 2nd round in 1998. who was available?

brad richards, eric cole, jarku ruutu and brian gionta were all 3rd rounders.

mcphee's early draft record is weak at best. their draft picks from 1994 - 2002 were pretty poor overall.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 17, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Yeah and the Red Wings had 2 late picks in the 2nd round of '98 and skipped Richards, Cole, Ruutu, and Gionta to draft the epic duo of Ryan Barnes and Tomek Valtonen.

For every gem some team finds in rounds 3 or later there are a bunch of quality teams and GM's that passed them over to pick someone who turned into a dud. Random names and stats are awesome.

Posted by: large23220 | March 17, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

I think we've looked fine so far. Just cause we haven't buried 3 already doesn't mean they're not playing with intensity. We look a lot more structured so maybe the lack of end to end rushes isn't a bad thing?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 17, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

No one is standing in the slot because we cant even setup in their zone so far.

but the FFF line definetely had the best shift so far.

Far as I can tell Fehr is the only guy we got willing to hang in the slot.

Feds tried it a couple times. At his age, I dont blame him for being a little shy though.

Why the hell wont Brads go in though? He's got an iron skull and no good sense half the time. He was made for screening and agitating. If Dino Ciccarelli's little ass can do it, I refuse to hear a size excuse. He's a little light, but at least he's over 5'5".

I really felt like letting Matt Cooke go was going to be a bad move. I think it was.

Pitt looking good 2 PP goals in 1st. Atl probably tired back to back and taking more calls than they did against us last night. Of course I thought the officiating was pretty iffy last night so maybe it's just a case of them Pens getting plenty of calls.

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | March 17, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

If there is one thing I'd like Ovechkin to change about his game, it would be those telegraphed, forehand, cross-ice passes from the left wing in the offensive zone. I'd say about 1 out of 20 actually gets through the defense without being deflected or taken away. The takeaways often lead to odd-man rushes in the other direction. He needs to keep possession, send the puck to the nearside corner or look for a more simple, short pass.

Agree/disagree?

Ovie is such a playmaker, I question nothing that he does....

But, I don't like it when he gives the puck away. You gotta deal with some risky plays to get all the greatness.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 17, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

tmac2yao

the thing is, in those situations he has no near teammate to pass it to. There should be someone following him close to give the puck to.

mauree,

Then he needs to hold onto the puck and move to open space or drive up the left side boards. If he doesn't want to hold onto the puck, he should backhand it behind his body to the nearside corner.

I cringe every time he pulls up after crossing the blue line and looks across the ice. Every player on the opposing team knows what is about to happen and is ready to pounce.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 17, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

OV does seem to have turn it over often on cross passes, I never thought of it as telegraphing his passes but more of the oposition being well prepared to denfense him.
I have other thoughts, but on the interest of preserving peace on this blog I would not post it here.

No.

Posted by: oo7 | March 17, 2009 6:55 PM

no, its not too early to pass judgment unless he's going to be better than he was before (not likely). But glad he's a healthier tool :)

as to him reading the play well, i'd like for him to be able to read the play when he has a 220lb forward bearing down on him. Thats what separates the good dmen from the bad ones. And Pothier simply isn't built to handle those kinds of nhl minutes.

It sounds like the Panthers Horn Guy has a case of the flu

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 17, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

anyone notice that? that entire play in our own end was caused by Nylander again losing the puck along the boards. Thats the 2nd time in the last few minutes the Panthers were able to sustain an offensive effort due to Nyles losing a 1 on 1 battle for the puck when he had the puck to begin with. That kind of play sums up for me why I can't wait to have him outta here. He's painful to watch and its plays like that which don't show up on the scoresheet but end up really costing a team. It wears you down and kills momentum

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 17, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Marti's record will hold for a long time. He is an awesome goalie, but he benefitted from the clutch-and-grab 1990's and early 2000's. In the stricter environment nowadays, no one will get close to 552 and counting. When Roy got the record, a lot of folks noted that MB would have a chance to break it

Posted by: gtydings | March 17, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Great game. Okay, maybe there's been criticism of putting the OBS line together but it seems like putting them together results in combinations I like for the 2nd and 3rd lines. The F Bombers looked good even though they didn't score but Fed had several shots on goal. And Kozlov seems to do well with Nyls and Laich for some reason.

Okay, Koz has done well with Ovi and Semin has done well with Laich.

Of course, no matter what we do, we need everyone healthy to have 3 scoring lines. We had Fed out for the better part of a week so, of course, our 2nd line couldn't do squat. And when Kozzie was out, there was definitely something missing in our offense. Nylander is just not a winger.
