Tonight's lineup: Caps at Penguins (updated)

Semyon Varlamov will indeed start tonight for the Caps tonight and will oppose Marc Andre-Fleury at Mellon Arena.

Because of injuries, there are some changes to Washington's lineup. No. 1 defenseman Mike Green will miss his second straight game with a minor ailment. Eric Belanger did not take warmups and appears to be out.

Update:Evgeni Malkin will miss tonight's game with an undisclosed illness, a Pens spokesman said.

Here's how the Caps lined up pregame:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Beagle-Fehr
Laing-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Poti
Morrisonn-Corvo
Erskine-Sloan

Goalies
Varlamov
Theodore

Karl Alzner took the warmup, but he doesn't appear to be playing.

Check back for more later.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 6, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Why would you not have Alzner in...clearly he is better than Sloan or Erskine + it gets him more experience. Not clear on that decision. Plus if we are all healthy, Sloan Erskine dont play so...anyone help me out on the rationale?

wtf corvo - no need to fling that the length of the ice

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 6, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

We may need to take up donations to buy Ovechkin a goal.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 6, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Corvo has been horrible. I've been on the fense with him, but he clearly makes a lot of mistakes playing the puck in his own end.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 6, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

...im tired of talkin about how good he would be if he played hard...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 6, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Great play by Semin but Schultz made an equally strong play behind our net to kickstart the exit out of our zone.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

However, Semin needs no donations right now.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 6, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

WOW.

With both teams with less than playoff intesity, we're dominating.

Seeing the PENs play with out 71, you really see how much he means to teh team. Without 71, they're average, maybe a bit above.

Posted by: floms | April 6, 2010 8:04 PM | Report abuse

he just has that look on his face like its so easy

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 6, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I am displeased with the lack of chat. I think I am going to cry now :'(

Nice goal by Semin.

Posted by: sargeantmofo | April 6, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

When Schultz cut off that pass behind the net and made the quick outlet I said outloud "Great play, Schultz."

It's nice that he ended up getting rewarded with an assist.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@Capt AZ

You must've misunderstood...in no way am I saying Sloan Erskine are being prepped for playoffs...quite the opposite. Hence my intended query of why they are playing in lieu of Karl.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | April 6, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Malkin didnt win Conn Smythe by accident.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 6, 2010 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 6, 2010 8:09 PM | Report abuse

that was a lazy and unnecessary penalty by Ovi...

Posted by: joek443 | April 6, 2010 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 6, 2010 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ralCapsFan | April 6, 2010 8:07 PM

that was just my own observation/ramblings about sloan/erskine - if they are paired for the last two games, then i'll be worried

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 6, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Wow is that what the Pens do before the game? Push each other like that? How gay.

Sasha's 39th= a beauty

btw, I'm really surprised the Pens got the first PP.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 6, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

So far our D is doing very well. Please keep it up boys. The Pens look sluggish and overwhelmed by us. Stay demoralized Pens. Don't come back in the second all fired up.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 6, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

There was a lot of run-and-gunning that game but I do think the Caps had the upper hand and Varly is looking like his old self too.

...that period. Sorry

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 6, 2010 8:18 PM | Report abuse

and Poti has been playing like a guy who wants a day off

Posted by: joek443 | April 6, 2010 8:12 PM

I second that thought.

He was horrible in the 1st period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

beagle 3 for 3 on faceoffs
schultz 2 blocked shots
varly 9 for 9
there sure is a lot of effort considering they don't have a whole lot to really play for other than pride... AND BEATING THE PENS!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 6, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

What has happened to my favorite player in the world, Ovie? Do you think, as BB says, that the suspension made him too self-conscious and he lost his spontaneity? He looks like he is a little lost, like he just joined the team and is looking to find his niche in it. I am so worried. He is just not on fire as he always was.

Posted by: caraveli | April 6, 2010 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Beagle's got a lot to prove though. :)

GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 6, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

I guess I missed the 1st pd. At least the Caps are leading. Noticed some players were called up, is 8.5 playing

Posted by: instinct227 | April 6, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Overall, this was the best first period the Caps have played (as a whole) in a while...

Posted by: TimDz | April 6, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

I'm surprised by their effort. From what BB said about the game "not mattering," I figured the Pens would be up 4-0. I guess DC's Russians and Canadians really don't like Pittsburgh's Russians and Canadians.

Re: OVI
Yes, he doesn't have his physical element becasue of the suspension, plus conserving energy/health for the playoffs.

No need to be concerned about that aspect of his game. He will come out banging against Philly.

His turnover issues, and trying to take on the entire team by himself, that's another story. Hopefully BB will discuss that with him.

Guess the Pens will really start racking up the PPs now.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 6, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

They miss the elbow to Semin's head and then it looked like Ovechkin got hit in the neck or head and we still don't get a call.

I don't believe in the conspriacy stuff but the officiating is horrible tonight.

They owe us some calls.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

still none for the pens
lets see what happens with the calls in the 3rd

Jesus. Penalties are 3-0. If you missed my post earlier, the last 14 games between these teams: Pens have 10 games with more power plays, 4 games are tied, and the Caps have ZERO.

Joe Beninati said it. In the season series so far, Pittsburgh has had 18 power plays, while the Capitals have had only 7.

Getting 72% of the power plays over a season series is more than a little strange, especially when you consider that the Penguins this year, heading into this game, had 365 minor penalties this season while the Capitals had only 329.

If Chimera was a better finisher, he'd be a potential 40 goal scorer.

I have to give the guys credit. They're playing 8 on 5 out there, and still up 4-2.

That shot by Talbot to Semin was a clear elbow to the head. I can't believe that the league, with their alleged "tough stand on headshots" doesn't even call that a penalty.

Also, on that last non-goal by PIT, Cooke gave a high stick right to Varly's face. I didn't know that was legal now, either.

Also, who is the announcer who is no Joe B? He's super biased. Is he Their Joe B?

The sad thing is that you can see that Corvo is giving it everything in this game yet he still gets pushed around like a pee-wee player.

I can't remember the last time I've seen an NHL defensemen get knocked off the puck so easily.

To Richmond Phil, every other winger makes a consisten effort to back check and not turn the puck over by being too cute...they know they'll get benched or sent down if they don't..

OVi has a pass, and sometimes he uses it. Lately he's been using it a lot

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 6, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

What worries me about Pittsburgh is that they seem to be a much better checking team - both forechecking and backchecking - and they play much more physically.

Their secondary and role players play a more gritty, physical brand of hockey and I think that that is something missing on our team, esp. when it comes to playoff hockey.

I really don't want to believe the consipracy theories but the officiating does seem consistently horrible when we play the Penguins.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the fact that Pittsburgh tends to play more physically and aggressively.

I think that the Capitals have a certain style, they play it really well, they are the best team in the world, and everything is OK. I don't know that conventional wisdom would say they are really that great of a team since they are certainly not the best at team defense, which I think goes to show you how valuable that conventional wisdom really is.

The Capitals will win the Stanley Cup either this year or next, and they will be playing a lot like they are right now when they do it.

I think Morrisonn was one of our best defensemen again, despite the -2.

He made a number of outstanding plays, both deliver and taking hits and making plays under pressure.

Were one of his goals the one where Ovechkin was floating around aimlessly in the defensive zone and not covering his guy, Leopold?

Yup, I just checked the game summary. That second -1 falls right on the shoulders of Ovechkin and possibly Corvo for failing to clear the puck earlier in the play.

You have to look beyond the box score in a lot of cases.

In Schultz' case, he deserved the big numbers tonight and they were reflective of his play.

In Morrisonn's case, despite a mistake or two, he was outstanding more often than not and was one a few players willing to meet Pittsburg's physical push.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A nice exclamation point to the regular season series against Pittsburgh. Just beautiful.

I love how once again the refs called ONE PENALTY against the Penguins. Spare me but at least the Caps made them pay. They played smart hockey.

Varly was solid when he needed to be.

Not much else left to be said. Another step rolling on as the playoffs draw near.

It's been a two point night. Two days to rest and practice as Atlanta comes calling Friday.

@richmondphil

Hey, I'm just the average fan (aside from my painfully long posts at times) so I could be wrong but there is no doubt that the box score isn't always reflective of a player's performance.

I thought Morrisonn was once again great in this game, despite a mistake or two and the -2.

Like I said, the 2nd -1 he got seemed to be entirely on Ovechkin for drifting aimlessly and not picking up Leopold. If it wasn't Ovechkin's fault and just us getting caught on a bad line change, it still wasn't on Morrisonn.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 10:50 PM | Report abuse

@wtf eric

Yes...I have noticed this many a time this year and emailed them at: webmaster@tsn.ca. Either they do not know statistical analysis or they are showing an obvious bias...ofcourse I have not heard a reply. Shocker.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | April 6, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

It's also frustrating to watch Backstrom making bad plays in his obvious effort to get Ovechkin the puck.

Ovechkin should be the guy to tell him to stop doing that and to just take what the defense gives him.

I know that these are relatively meangingless games but it's just as important to keep other players going and to make good plays.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 6, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I hate using +/- as a defensive stat for exactly the reasons you state. It's not indicative of the player's performance most of the time. And again, I didn't actually watch the game..well I tried, but it was going in and out a lot, so it was hard for me to follow anything visually really.

I like ShaMo, and hope he can be a wrecking ball for us in the playoffs.

Gretzky wouldn't get close to 200 points in today's game.

Yea, I thought he got a point when his brother scored but that wasn't the case.

And for anybody complaining about Ovechkin get a cheap ENer, Sedin and Crosby have cheap leads in points and goals considering how many fewer games Ovechkin has played than both of them.

After the completion of tonight's games, Ovechkin will have played 10 less games than Sedin and 8 less games than Crosby.

Ovechkin would have wrapped up both awards if it weren't for the injury and suspensions. The second suspension seems to also have effected his play but I suppose that you could argue that that is his own doing.

"I doubt the elbow on Semin gets a suspension."

---

I think we all know that it won't get a suspension. That said, if it was Semin hitting Talbot literally in the exact same way, he'd be out for the regular season.

It wasn't "bad luck," it was a cheap shot. It was a completely unnecessary elbow to the face, and it was one of many, many blatant penalties that the Pennies were allowed to get away with tonight.

And we *still* beat them 6-3.

Another pretty poor game by Corvo. He's got to start moving the puck quicker or just dumping it out if he doesn't have a good play to make. There were a few times tonight when he had quite a bit of time with the puck but waited to make a play until a Penguin was on him and ended up just giving the puck up. Just firing the puck down the ice is far better than giving it away in your own zone. If he doesn't get his act together he might be the odd-man out going into the playoffs. Overall a pretty good game on defence by Washintgon but definitely some things to work on before the post-season.

was just watching the highlights on nhl on the fly. i went frame by frame on crosby's goal and it looks like it did change direction but didn't appear to touch varly. i think it went off of guerin...

I just finished watching my DVR'd game. I gotta give great props to 1) Shultz -- amazing D against both Crosby and Stahl, a couple of assists, and +17 or so tonight. Just great; 2) Semin -- fantastic goal, just beautiful, you are officially on a tear. Looking forward to No. 40; Ovi -- way to get 2(!); Knuble -- can I hear 30 goals?

Having watched the game and then scanned this thread, I was displeased to see the disses of Joe Corvo -- kinda reminds me when the board piled on Schultz and others in the past. He had some monster play tonight, breaking up key plays (e.g., the sweep away on the 2 on 1 break in the 3rd, some great clears, and a solid number of steals). There's no question that the book on Corvo is pressure him when he's on the clear (he might cough it up), but he acquitted himself very well tonight and had some excellent hockey plays.

What a fantastic, responsible 1st period; Varly could've been better; great game overall

damn i missed this game.

just watched the highlights, looked like Flash played hard. He kickstarted the first goal with his defensive backcheck, pushes the Pens fwd off the puck which squeezes loose to Sarge who makes the nice flip play along the boards.

Poti looked like he was on the ice for a lot of chances/goals tonight.

and corvo didn't look great either but that was just from the highlights. He plays too far away from his crease. Someone's always getting behind him.

At least 3 of the goals tonight resulted from a Caps player laying a hit on a Pens player. I think Ovy made two of those plays, Flash made another.

oh yeah, also loved the way Flash jumped into the fray and grabbed Tyler Kennedy around his head and pulled him off the pile. I have renewed hope that players like Flash and Semin (who also looked involved from the highlights) that they'll be up and ready for some playoff hockey. I'm getting a bit pumped now. Philly or Boston, barring a big Ranger comeback.

Great play by Semin but Schultz made an equally strong play behind our net to kickstart the exit out of our zone.

go back even a second before, it was Flash who created that play. Took on a bigger player and xchecked him off the puck. Thats why the puck squirted loose to Schultz.

i posted about some of the poor play of corvo and when he made a nice play on d.
i'm still perplexed at why people were all over schultz before - but corvo has been around a bit longer so i don't think he'll get a pass as easily. i didn't know much at all about corvo before he was picked up - but he seems to put himself out of position too often - and that worries me because they can't afford to make any more mistakes than they make now. i do want him to do well every time he is on the ice though

Yes, Flash had some standout plays, not to mention an awesome goal.

And hard to know because the camera pulled away, but I believe it was Fehr who took off Crosby's lid.

Yes...I think it was Fehr who tipped the lid...ofcourse Eddie O had some disparaging remarks....tool that he is

Being at the game there were two players that stood out to me 1) Sloan. Normally I think he shouldn't be in the lineup but there were at least 4-5 times that I said good play Sloan and I also noticed the Pens were getting Crosby out against him. I was really worried at the start of the game with him and Earskne playing together but he played what might have been his best game of the year. 2) Beagle. I noticed that the Pens were trying to get the Crosby line out with him as well and did a good job covering him in the game.

There were others that had good games as well but these two were ones that I was worried about considering they are not normally in the lineup.

Mike Wise is a piece of garbage. I wonder how Tarik feels about him covering the Caps, even on an editorial level. He knows nothing about hockey.

Dude what is it with this SC87 guy?? He's supposed to be a Sens fan and he's all over Sidney Crosby. Gross. You're just jealous you lost and Ovie scored that empty netter. It was a great way to cap off the game, btw!!
