Tonight's lineup: Caps at Rangers

Semyon Varlamov will start in goal in Alex Ovechkin's return to the Caps' lineup tonight at Madison Square Garden. Henrik Lundqvist, meantime, will get the nod for the Rangers.

Alexander Semin is out with what's believed to be a right wrist injury, which means minor league call-up Jay Beagle is in. Michal Neuvirth will be on the bench because Jose Theodore is back in Arlington tending to a personal matter.

The rest of the Caps' scrambled lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark
Fleischmann-Morrison-Laich
Perreault-Steckel-Fehr
Laing-Beagle-Bradley
Scratches: Semin, Gordon (back).

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Schultz-Poti
Erskine-Pothier
Scratches: Jurcina (IR), Sloan (healthy)

Goalies
Varlamov
Neuvirth

I'll have more after the game.

now THIS is a lineup (at least the forwards) that I can enjoy watching. Size and grit on each line and if Flash and Mo show some hustle out there then it should be a fun night of forechecking.

Defensively too bad Juice isn't in there instead of Poti or Schultz. I'm digging the way Pothier has been playing. Good step ups in the neutral zone and he's not letting himself get pushed around too much. He's competing.

Posted by: cstanton1 | November 17, 2009 7:05 PM | Report abuse

THESE line combinations ought to be interesting to watch.

LET'S GO, CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | November 17, 2009 7:08 PM | Report abuse

well that was fast..

Posted by: vtcaps08 | November 17, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

good clear out morrison and schultz

Posted by: _stevo | November 17, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

That sucks...Ovie on the ice and like many other times a goal against the Caps. C'mon boys play some D-Fense.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | November 17, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Why were Morrisonn and Shultz just standing on either side of Gaborik with neither picking him up? Likely Varly should have controlled the rebound, but still, Gaborik should not be that wide open.

Posted by: Aldred15 | November 17, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Why is Sloan out and 2 minors are in?

Posted by: jgrasse | November 17, 2009 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Did they send Perrault down?

Posted by: RogueBiscuit | November 17, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

The game is on Versus, however the screen is black on COX Versus HD in Fairfax county! Anyone has any idea?

Posted by: romicva | November 17, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Nevermind. I thought Beagle had replaced Perrault but I see he replaced Stecks.

Posted by: RogueBiscuit | November 17, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Rogue:

He replaced Gordon actually. Stecks is in there as a third line center.

Posted by: Aldred15 | November 17, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Shultz f@@@@@@g SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK

Posted by: Tondi | November 17, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

No kidding. Morrisonn and Schultz should have just made a bed for him. Two defensemen just watching him stand right in front of the goal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Avery is always ready with the cheap shot, but he seems to have no interest in a straight on fight. Sure would be nice to see someone take care of him big time.

Posted by: zmega | November 17, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

78% on the PK, that's simply not gonna cut it... actually quite pathetic for an elite team

8 good defensemen hun?

Posted by: joek443 | November 17, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

That was Morrisonn as much as Schultz, if not more.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

This should be a good game to see how much Semin is missed. They can key on defending Ovie.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | November 17, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

FIRST!

Posted by: large23220 | November 17, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Wow. They are playing like a team that really wants to win.

They are forechecking us into the ground. They are trapping us. And when we DO break though, they are backchecking us silly.

Look at that.

Posted by: large23220 | November 17, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

the lumberjack must have a whole bunch of saved up rage that he wants to unleash on avery from the playoffs last year

Posted by: _stevo | November 17, 2009 7:30 PM | Report abuse

wow bradley i thought got some good punches in but again got his face exploded

Posted by: _stevo | November 17, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Poor Brads...he keeps trying to win a fight, but ends up bloody every time. His helmet doesn't stop the fists from his face.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | November 17, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Even in the rare instance where Bradley arguably wins a fight, he still walks away looking like he lost.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

I love it. Avery didn't think that was a a trip. He truly belongs in the a-holes' hall of fame.

Posted by: zmega | November 17, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

The ice looks really bad tonight. Seen a lot of guys falling down and having pucks bounce on them.

I could hear on Caps radio that Ovie got a PP goal. Damn DirectTV. Let's go caps.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | November 17, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I have to admit, I didn't open the white wine until after the Bradley fight. The margaritas were too good.

Welcome back, Ovi.

And, Bradley - if I ever meet him, I'll buy him a beer. Everyone should.

Posted by: tominfl1 | November 17, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Caps4Life1 try adthe.net they usually have feeds for the games.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 17, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

game is on atdhe.net for those of you who aren't watching the game.

Heck of a shot by Ovechkin, but part of the credit goes to the two skaters who didn't register a point, Laich and Clark, both of whom were providing an excellent screen. Every player on the PP was involved in that goal.

Posted by: Aldred15 | November 17, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Icehammer97. Thanks. I have tried and the connection is very choppy....I am in a hotel in Hampton, VA on business. Slow Hotel Connection. It sucks listening to it on 1500am.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | November 17, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

It's not just DirecTV, I've got COX and can't watch it either. Anyone else has this problem?

Posted by: romicva | November 17, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Perreault is awesome.

Posted by: Aldred15 | November 17, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Green continues to try to be way too cute with the puck in his own end. That was a horrible and unnecessary giveaway.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

amazing what you can accomplish when you pair real skill guys with some grinders providing screens. Balance can be a wonderful thing.

Posted by: cstanton1 | November 17, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Yup, Perreault with more good play. Drew a penalty, played with energy and made a clever pass that nearly resulted in a goal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

ditto on Perrault. I can handle him being a permanent fixture to this lineup. Sparkplug!

Flash with 2 hits in this period already eclipses his hit total from last year.

Posted by: cstanton1 | November 17, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

@RogueBiscuit

Since Stecks is playing, he ended up replacing Semin.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 17, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Here's the to do list for GMGM:

1) Sign Semin long term. Why Semin? Well, he can either take a one-year arbitration or play in Russia for one year and then he's a UFA, where he can ask for Gaborik bucks of $7.5M.

1A) Offer him Richards bucks - $6.2M a year (excluding the back end). That would be a 6-year, $37M contract.

2) Tomas Fleischmann. What? Flash? Well, think for a moment. He gets like $700K. And he's puting up numbers worthy of a Brooks Laich contract ($6.3M for two RFA and one UFA season). Like Semin, he can ask for arbitration next July and then go UFA in July, 2011. What's to stop him? Easy - a 4-year, $9M offer will make him think.

3) Backie. "Oh, finally, he gets to Backie." He's easy - give him the Kopitar deal, $6.8M a year. He and Kopitar are a perfect match, money wise. And Backie is less of a priority because he's 4 years from UFA and doesn't have the KHL option.

1. Get rid of Nylander.

Agreed, I've got $10 bucks anytime, anywhere for a brew for Brads.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | November 17, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Did you guys see Green try to play the puck instead of the stick or the body on that one play that led to a 2-on-1 for the Rangers? That was horrible. If nothing else, he should have stayed in position to prevent the forward from getting behind him.

That's two very nice assists from Mike Green.

Is he at this point the top defenseman in scoring this year?

Three margarita cocktails...ROCK THE GREEN!

Two in the books and one more point to go in the third period! Maybe a game icing goal!

Anyone who wants to hear some Green-love for the Norris runner-up can line up behind me.

As for me, I'll be lining up behind Matt Bradley.

NEW NICKNAME ALERT! From the poster who brought you "Mini-Me!"

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 17, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

@tominfl1

Agree with you on what the GM should do about Backstrom and Semin. You proposed a great plan.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 17, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

And if you don't like "Bradley Armored Vehicle" you can call him "General" or even "Omar" because like the general he's ready to storm the beach and he's not afraid of a tougher enemy!

Let's be honest, calling him the "human punching bag" is funny but it's not accurate. Like the general, Matt "turned the tide" by "going on the offensive" against that very offensive Voros character.

For those who haven't studied military history, sometimes a weaker force will be sacrificed in a diversion so the stronger force can be mounted in a more preeminent position against the enemy.

Matt Bradley. He's our general tonight. Give him a star.

Posted by: tominfl1 | November 17, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

@@tominfl1

Also agree with you on your money proposal for Flash. I was initially more concerned with Backstrom and Semin and forgot to read further.

I hope we can afford all these guys. But, then again, Theodore is gone. And hopefully, Nylander is gone by that point. (How long will Nyls stay in limbo anyhow?)

As you might recall, Brads wore "C" during a preseason game last season. It is nice to know that the Caps braintrust do understand his contribution to the team, for letters are definitely not just handed out indiscriminately. Brads is a good egg.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 17, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

The Caps with 37 hits to the Rangers' 24! Ovechkin with 7 of them!

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin took 7 shots but only 1 on goal. That 1 went in, too.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

So, no, I am not curious or concerned or anything else.

He had 7 hits, 7 shots (1 on goal) and was battling like a bull in the corners.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Ovie was pretty physical tonight, I think the shoulder is ok. He has never missed so much time, probably just readjusting. AND HE STILLLLLL SCORED!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 17, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Terrific to see that there was no letdown by the rest of the guys with Ovi back in the lineup tonight. His being out for a few games just might have been what the team needed to truly make them jell.

Posted by: wocoliz | November 17, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

The penalty call against Erskine was really lame. It wazs total crap. Since when does the league to allow a player (Avery) to swat the goalie in the head? What Erskine did was respond like during the entire history of the league. Usually when a player does a really bush foul like Avery did, the retalliation is allowed to be a little rougher. Dan Mouruelli (and I don't care if I spelled it wrong) needs to get a second I.

@tmac2yao

Thanks dude for the stats on Ovie shots...I did not have

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 17, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

No problem. I wasn't trying to be snappy. I just got riled up after watching Avery being Avery. Then when Bradley scored, I was all kinds of pumped up.

Just go to NHL(dot)com and click on Scores > Boxscore > Game Reports > Event Summary.

That provides a nice statistical overview.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 17, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

By the way, Kessel at like $5.5M a year is really lighting them up for TO.

5 goals already and he wasn't even supposed to be back until Thanksgiving.

GMGM will try and use the Kessel deal in market for Backie, whose camp will put forth the Kopitar contract.

Sorry if I sometimes concentrate on the contractual side but I do this for a living anyway.

For me, contract terms and conditions are almost as fascinating as goals and assists.

I know...I need to get a life.

Oh, I have a life, and I rather enjoy it. When the Caps win, I enjoy it most.

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

I'll tell you, it's great when Ovi scores, but what can top Brads on a night like tonight?

Posted by: tominfl1 | November 17, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Nice game. Great game by Bradley. (Coming back after getting bloodied up pretty good durnig the fight.) Nice goal.

The Caps nearly got killed by back-to-back guys in the box during third period. (This is the second game I remember like that. Skating off a penalty only to have someone else get called for a penalty right off the bat.)

Glad Ovi's back. Hope Sasha's wrist will be okay.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 17, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

@tominfl1

On Oisk's penalty. He was unlucky and got caught by the ref. (I felt that Avery should have been penalized also.) Or is that typical of the penalties that get called on people against Avery?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 17, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Thought Erskine's penalty was a weak call by the refs especially because of Avery. Whenever he looks up with that "who me" look of innocence is when a ref should be most suspicious.

Never did see Pothier's penalty but then again my stream was constantly rebuffering--what was the penalty?

We missed the last minute and half of the game. Had to come on here to make sure we had won. Thought they played the full 60 minutes. Good game. Glad to see scoring from three different players. Three very different kinds of goals too: slapshot, in the crease slip-in, and breakaway. I like it.
