Tonight's lineup: Caps at Thrashers

Michal Neuvirth will start in goal tonight at Philips Arena, where the Caps will be attempting to shake off another strange day of travel and hand Atlanta its 10th loss in 11 games. Johan Hedberg, meantime, will be in net for the Thrashers.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should be unchanged:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Fleischmann-Semin
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Steckel-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Schultz-Poti
Erskine-Pothier

Goalies
Neuvirth
Theodore

I'll have more later.

The poti-Schultz pairing is on fire.

Posted by: BACKS | January 9, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

The 3-0 lead is deceptive because the puck has been in our defensive zone waayyy too much for my liking.

Posted by: tess2201 | January 9, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Shots on goal are 18-7 Thrashers.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 9, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

The score doesn't really reflect the overall play. Neuvirth has been Hasek-like. Need to pick up the overall defensive intensity.

Posted by: zmega | January 9, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

is that the same Moose Hedberg that looked like Patrick Roy against the Caps one year in the playoffs when he was with the Pens?

For those that have not seen this fight in the KLH it is a cross between Queebec and Montreal and Slapshot as well as some fimiliar caps in the middle of it.

Thrashers must be feeling like the Caps felt in that game against Philly a year or two ago. We were outshooting them like 35-10 through 2 periods and were down 3-0.

Posted by: Raber | January 9, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

@tess2201 & rachel216

Yes, the Caps have been playing an awful lot in their defensive zone tonight.

Neuvy's been great so far. Stopped a lot of shots. (Atlanta' goalie has not stopped a high percentage of shots; however.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 9, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

That second goal is EXACTLY why we picked up knuble.

Posted by: BACKS | January 9, 2010 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Actually, both goals represent what he was brought in here for. Big net friendly body.

Posted by: BACKS | January 9, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Time for me to start multi-tasking :)
....Bears at Manitoba again tonight. Game starts in about 10 minutes.

Posted by: tess2201 | January 9, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Strange game.

Up until the last few minutes, I think you could argue Atlanta was outplaying us.

They dominated, statistically, in the 1st period.

We've had 2 fortunate bounces that led to 2 goals.

Knuble's deflected one in from about 10 feet out on the 1st goal. Those are tough to come by.

Semin's goal was nice but it was a rare SHG.

We've had good fortune and capitalized on our opportunities but Atlanta has played well for the most part.

Posted by: butcherbaker | January 9, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy with a game changing save. Would've been a game had it been 4-2 going into the third.

Posted by: rachel216 | January 9, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 9, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

CSN is too busy putting the 'Bullets' on HD and shoving the Caps down to LowDef. They forget about PP clocks I guess.

Posted by: terlin1 | January 9, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

ATL with already 33 saves. Too bad no shutout right now. I think if Neuvy doesn't touch the one that went in, it wouldn't have gone in. Don't you guys think?

Posted by: rachel216 | January 9, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Now if someone could only take care of Pittsburgh and New Jersey while we were at it. NJ is tied with Montreal (with one of their guys in the box to start the next period). And Pitt is up by 1.

Gonchar with two goals this evening... looks better than he ever did for the Caps.

both he and Larry Murphy very much under-appreciated when they were with the Caps but I wouldn't be surprised to see him follow Murphy to the hall of fame.

just heard that he will be an UFA after this season... will be interesting to see if the Pens will be able to keep him

I will apologize upfront for a what may be a wordy and possibly stupid question:

Is being in such a...weak division...going to be a disadvantage to the Caps come playoff time? At worst, they are looking at the #3 seed. My fear is that teams like the Pens and Devils are in far more competitive divisions and that this will play to their advantage...Am I being paranoid (ironic, since I am a shrink from 9 to 5...).

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 9, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

@TimDZ To me, the regular season is a real slog, and an easier one puts you at an advantage in the playoffs. The Caps will have plenty of chances to practice bringing their 'A' game. MY question is why, with a 6-1 lead are the caps playing their first line? OK, they just scored on a PP as I write this, but who cares? Let's protect our key guys.

Posted by: DKSW | January 9, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

yes, it is a disadvantage since the Caps are probably gonna be the only team from the division making the playoffs.

once they get by the first round, they should be okay but the last two first rounds they went down 3 games to 1... can't do that again this year.

this is like the GARBAGE time in the NBA at the moment.

Why would Kovalchuk even WANT to stay in Atlanta? Mind you, I'm not advocating the Caps trying to get him, but seriously he needs to find a team where he has a chance of winning.

Only two players wearing white failed to get a point. Erskine/Shamo.

In response to what someone said earlier about playing in a weak division hurting the caps - I dont think so. All it does is get them a a higher seed. They still get plenty of games vs the NJ's/Pit's/Sj's/ etc.

Bears and Manitoba 1-1.
Bears had a 5 on 3 power play and Coach put 5 forwards on the ice, but the gamble backfired. Shirokov came out of the box and scored a shorty on Holtby.

Not ridiculous at all. If Neuvy hadn't made some of the saves he made in the first period, the result will more than likely be much more different than what it ended up being.

I was just about to say the same thing zmega. Hard to believe in a 8-1 game, but Neuvy deserves a lot of the credit for the W. I'm more impressed every time I watch him; he doesn't always look as spectacular as Varly, but he sure seems to be in the right position just about every time.

Now its on to F-L-A and hopefully we leave the state with 4 more points.

Frankly I think that if Atlanta can't sign Kovalchuk, they may as well close up shop.

While I'm sure the Caps would love to have Kovy on their team, they probably could not afford him in a salary cap world. Atlanta would demand a lot. And paying his salary would only compound the problem we already have with paying the salaries of Ovi, Semin, Backstrom, and the others. Yes, even if Semin were traded or let go to make room for Kovy.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 9, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

It was a Murphy's Law type of game for the Thrashers. (Or, as the Russians would say, Muraviov's Law.) Whatever could go wrong for them did.

You know it's a bad day when a team has close to 20 shots on goal for a period and no goals and the other team has 7 shots on goal and 3 goals, including a shortie. The Caps have had plenty of games where they lead in shots on goal and are behind but never like this. (But BB compared it to the Philthy game of last year.)

Someone explain how the 3 stars are selected.

Tonight Semin gets 2 goals, one the game-winner, and an assist (3 pts.), but does not get the 1st star, Noobles did for 2 goals, but one less point (I don't begrudge it for him, just trying to understand). Then Poti gets 3 pts., one a goal, gets no star, but Green gets 3rd star with 2 assists. I thought Poti had a very strong game and has had the last few, which has been fabulous.

Tuesday against the Habs, Semin gets 2 goals, one the game-winner, but gets the 2nd star then, too. Flash got first, and while he had 3 pts., only one was a goal.

Who decides these things, just out of curiosity?

Posted by: Steakum | January 9, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Tarik's Twitter said that Erskine is hurt and did not finish the game. I did not see it -- did anyone see him get hurt?

Posted by: Steakum | January 9, 2010 10:40 PM | Report abuse

I believe that we have actually played our own division fewer
times so far than several other Eastern Conference teams--eg Devils have 14 games with our division while tonight's game is only our tenth.

Though outshot in the first I thought our guys played great. With Neuvi being so much in the zone it allowed our guys to be really aggressive with the puck and they did keep clearing the puck out of thecrease.

We can go bed happy now!

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | January 9, 2010 10:42 PM | Report abuse

@Steakum

I think the writers of the home team decide the Stars of the Game. I don't quite agree with the order tonight either.

My vote would have been:

Semin #1
Knuble #2
Neuvirth #3

Although a case could have been made for Schultz who was +5 tonight. Yes, +5. He should have gotten a vote ahead of Green.

And people could have also made the case for Neuvirth to be the #1 star.

I do not know exactly how it works, but I imagine they look at all aspects of the game, not just points earned by players... I think the stars of the game are decided by the media/press (could be wrong), but also they are submitted with about 10 or so minutes to go in the game...I am not 100% sure about that, but I think Tarik or someone from CI explained how it works last season, when they were asked why a certain player did not get a star of the game after an amazing last (couple) minute effort...

I think Knuble had an amazing all around game tonight...love how he is going hard to the net!!! Cannot believe how Ov seems to be a non factor (on the score sheet) in a bunch of our high scoring wins this year (though some absences were due to injury/suspension). And speaking of stars of the game, I must agree with whoever stated that Nuevy should have gotten number 1 star!

I am sure someone out there knows more about this than I, but thought I would try and help....

Go Caps!

It was a tough decision to award stars. Schultz certainly deserved one ahead of Green.

Now Caps fans should certainly stop trying to throw Schultz under the bus, which was all too common last season.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 9, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

@The_Stanley_Caps

Thank you for that. I agree that Knuble had a terrific game and I am so glad to see him getting back with it. I like him a lot and think his net presence is what we needed, so it's great to see it working, getting those "dirty" goals that count just the same.

I am sure things other than just points factor in, which is why I was surprised Semin did nothe best all-around game ever, I thought. Not only did he get the 2, but he was aggressive and physical.

I suppose it also swings to someone who does seem to have a breakout game of sorts.

Tonight it was our buddy Huet but Niemi gets a lot of work, too.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 9, 2010 11:21 PM | Report abuse

I haven't seen the highlights yet but I'm guessing Huet probably gave up a softie or two since the Wild only got 21 shots on goal and Chicago's defense rarely gives up good scoring opportunities.

At the same time, the Wild are one of the slickest passing teams in the league so maybe they just made a lot of great plays with their limited opportunites. I've seen a bunch of really nice Wild goals going back to last season. They often seem to make a couple of extra passes around the net leading to really pretty goals. I imagine it drives their coach mad at times but they seem to make it work quite a bit.

I plan on checking out the highlights later to see how the Wild pulled it off.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 9, 2010 11:29 PM | Report abuse

I just noticed a startling statistic from that game.

The Wild outhit the Hawks 46 to 12.

I wonder how many of those hits happened during the comeback in the 3rd. Maybe the Wild just went balls to the wall and forced the issue. I think of them as more of a finesse team but apparently not tonight.

I just checked some team stats. The Wild are actually right in the middle of the pack as far as team hits. I didn't really expect that. I know Clutterbuck throws his body around (he leads the league) but I didn't think they'd be that high as a team despite that fact.

since they can't down down Theo to Hershey, Neuvy will be sent down once Varly is healthy.

Turns out Theo is going to be part of a trade that brings us Souray. Also rumored to be part of the trade is Eric Fehr, Stefan Della Rovere, and some picks.

Souray has a no trade clause and recently choose to waive it. Only reason I can imagine he would do that is so he could be part of a contender. Man this trade has me excited, not only will we have to give up much less then we would have had to get Pronger but on top of that Souray is 3 years younger. Not to mention the fact that he currently has the leagues hardest slap shot. He's also a pretty strong hitter.

Only downside is he will have two years left on a contract thats similar to Theo in terms of amount after this year, not sure about how a no trade clauses transfer.

CapsXXVI I dont think the caps would try to bring back that large of a contract for that long. Theo leaving pretty much represents the Backstrom raise in itself. Taking on Sourays hit would put a strain on the caps to keep Flash/Backs.

@CapsXXVI

I didn't think the trade of Fehr, Theo, and others for Souray is yet confirmed.

How much is Souray's salary anyway? We know Theo makes a lot.

@ CapsXXVI Souray also is not much of a defensive d-man and hasn't been scoring much this season. Getting him would also make it so after signing Backstrom there is no room for Flash, Shultz (I know he isn't popular but he is leading the league in +/-), and may not be able to call up Alzner next season. Also Souray has said he would wave his clause for the right team and has hinted at the CA teams since that is where his wife and kid live.

It would have two years left after this year and it's about 5 mil per year. Now that I think about it maybe this isn't the best trade. Especially with the team playing as well as it is. Who else is out there and what would it take to get them? Particularly interested in the A-Train since he would at least mesh culturally with what we have in the locker room.

So based on my wonderful math skills this is how things would work out. If we traded for Souray The team has around $10 million in expiring contracts. Combine that with $3 million of cap room. So you have $13 million of cap space to work with. Souray takes up $5 million of that so that leaves us with $7 million in cap room. Personally I don't like it. I don't see how the team can resign Backstrom, Semin, and Flash long term. Not to mention making sure Alzner and Carlson coming up when they're ready.

You know what, screw the salary cap. Don't they see we're trying to win a cup.

My wonderful math skills are off by $1 million. So we have $8 million in cap room with Souray after this year. Thats assuming we don't resign Brian Morrison.

By the way what is the Backstrom contract expected to look like? Are we talking about around $5 or $6 million a year, possibly more.
