Tonight's lineup: Hurricanes at Caps

Jose Theodore will start in goal tonight for the Caps, who are looking to improve to 8-0-0 against the Southeast Division. In net for the 'Canes is Cam Ward, who is making his second start since returning from a lacerated leg.

In case you're wondering, there are 25 points separating the NHL-leading Caps and league-worst Canes.

Mike Knuble, Matt Bradley and Mathieu Perreault are back, but Brian Pothier (rib injury) is out. The rest of the lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Perreault-Fehr
Clark-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Morrisonn-Poti
Erskine-Jurcina

Goalies
Theodore
Neuvirth

I'll have more after the game.

But I see OBS will not be together tonight . . .

Erkshine and Poti havent impressed me lately and wouild like to see Sloan in there ahead of them. Why is Schultz with Green, should be ShaMo.

Don't bogart the smelling salts, Ovi. A couple nights ago it looked like everyone could have used a hit.

SO nice to see Knuble back with Ovi and no AHL scrubs in the lineup. Interesting that BB is still playing Schultz with Green even with S. Mo back.

Go Caps!

a rather impressive top 3 lines...

Steakum: These are exactly what I call "perfect" lines. While OBS works wonders in transition, I think and maybe BB does is that one set up, you get the "too much passing" thing.

Anyway, you can put OBS together on the PP when there's room to do their thing.

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Seems like Knuble doesn't have his legs quite yet. Maybe switch him up with someone. I like them giving Perrault a shot with better wingers. My only concern about Perrault is his defensive play being a smaller guy having to dig the puck out from behind his net.

I think the traveling + overlooking Carolina is hurting them so far

Posted by: floms | December 11, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

It looked like Perrault was triped when he was facing the boards behind Ward and there was no call.

Posted by: caraveli | December 11, 2009 7:35 PM

i'm not going to say theo is better than varly - but i'll defend him on both of those goals
1st goal - erskine took the passing lane and theo had sutter (i think) - sutter passed to tlusty and the pass actually hit erskines stick (which he didn't get all the way down on the ice). once the pass got past erskine there was little theo could do. if erskine has his stick even a half inch closer to the ice - tlusty never gets the pass
2nd goal - theo made the initial save with no rebound - schultz doesn't see the puck and is not fast enough to take staal out of the play. theo even got a piece of the second shot that went in
if you want to call either of these weak - i'll give you the second one

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 11, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

MAYBE...you could defend the first goal, but I think he should have had it...he eems to beunable to move laerally well...I'm sorry...I say give Neuivith a chance!

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin just is not playing very well. He is trying to make perfect passes (ie: on that PP) and it's resulting in turnovers. It seems like he is trying to put this goal slump solely on his shoulders and is trying by himself to get the team out of this funk.

Posted by: Aldred15 | December 11, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Yes, bring Neuvy in. I know there were mistakes made by our D that contributed to these goals but keeping us in the game in tough situations is what separates the competent from the great goalies.

I think the team may not have that much confidence in Theo. Do you think they would be more energetic if Varly was in goal?

If there is no a massive change of attitude and dynamics, we will lose tonight. Imagine if we are shut out for the second time in the row.

Posted by: caraveli | December 11, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

That goal was made possible by Jeff Shultz. TWO KEEP INS. I'm not sure if he gets an assist, but that goal never would have happened without him.

Ollie used to say, "the worst thing you can do is give up a goal with under a minute left in the period." Ward just surrendered no. 2 with 1 second left. The Caps should own the third period now.

Stinkin' Theodore. Shots are almost 40-15 and we're going to OT. This would have been an easy win with Varly in net.

Funny cheer when Theo stopped the puck from the red line. I remember an interview with him at the beginning of the year that essentially said "I told you guys how good I am, when are you gonna believe me?" 3 goals on 16 shots isn't a great percentage little guy.

Cam Ward has been very impressive tonight. BMo will score the OT winner

Yeah, Semin really sucks defensively. That's why he's one of the NHL leaders in takeaways and Boudreau uses him on the PK.

Well that was the most stressful win of the season for me so far! Nice to see Semin playing so well. Those of you who are bashing the Semin bshers should let up though...they have valid points...even BB admits it is frustrating how inconsistent Sasha can be...but BB isn't frustrated tonight!

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Green definitely made a bad play on the tying goal, but an NHL goalie should be stopping a slap shot from where Gleason shot it. All 3 goals on Theo tonight were questionable. I'd argue that had Varly been in there he might have gotten a shutout. I seriously can't wait till Theo's contract expires. How many more chances is he supposed to get? Every time he plays 2 good games all his supporters on here get all excited, but than he goes back to sucking hard for a month.

I have to give props to Gleason. To come back and play, and even score the tying goal, when inside your visor it looks like half your face was torn off... That is one tough dude. Hockey players are amazing. I'm so glad I won't have to hear how Tiger Woods is the best athlete in sports anymore for a while. Every one of the guys on the ice tonight is a better athlete than Tiger, every single one of them!

ranndino and Aldred15 - Hey, they won! Theo gave up a few but seems to me 2 were on clear breakaways and the only weak one was the wrap-around. He made a few nice saves to keep them in the game while the D got themselves together. Kind of presumptuous to think Varly would have had all of them. What, you don't like Theo????

Posted by: gonchpup | December 11, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

I thought Perrault played really well tonight...I am surprised he hasn't gotten a goal in a while. He really plays hard and creates chances!

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

@ capscoach

I won't let up on Semin bashers because most of the criticisms they throw around are myths. Bad defensively? One of the league leaders in takeaways. Inconsistent you say? Yes, he's inconsistent for himself. However, 99% of players would love to be as "inconsistent" as Semin. He has one of the highest point per ice time ratio in the NHL. In fact, last season, I think his ratio was higher than that of Ovie.

Posted by: ranndino | December 11, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom's ability to win puck battles is special.

He's amazing against the walls and in the corners.

His anticipation is incredible.

When he gets possession, he's so tough to knock off the puck.

His vision and passing skills are both elite.

Green's finish was great but...

Backstrom was the one that created that scoring chance.

He won the puck in the corner then made an absolutely phenomenal pass through traffic to Green. It looked like it was going to Ovechkin but I'm pretty sure he was looking for Green.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 11, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Perreault had a very good game again. He was especially visible tonight because he got to play with skilled guys like Flash and Fehr. He's been a little snake bitten in the goals department, but he's always creating something every shift. His play for Flash's goal was awesome.

Posted by: ranndino | December 11, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

@ ranndino

I just think that both sides have good points. I would LOVE to keep Semin as a Cap forever...as long as it doens't mean giving up Backie. Way to go Semin!!! You ROCKD THE RED tonight!

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

On Carolina's 2nd goal, it clearly looked like it bounced off Schultz's skate and up and over Theo's shoulder.

Theo was still very shaky tonight. I'm guessing Neuvy goes tomorrow.

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 11, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

ranndino:
you need to stop exaggerating about theo - he does not have two good games and then suck for a month - that's just not true. his d let him down on those first two goals and greens mistake directly lead to the third.

unless he gets hurt theo will be starting in 20-25 more games this year. he is not the future in goal for the caps but he will be here for the rest of the season. he 8-4-4 so far - i didn't see anybody ragging on varly when his gaa was around 3.25 - why - because he was winning - and so is theo

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 11, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

@ gonchpup

OK, I take 1 back. The first goal is not on Theo, but Gleason's still is because even though it was a partial breakaway Gleason just took a slapshot. Yes, it is presumptuous of me to say that Varly would've gotten a shutout, but I'm basing it on what I see and it's just my opinion. We played good D for the most part tonight and limited their shots to under 20.

And no, I don't like Theodore. Nothing personal, but he has sucked 80% of the time since we signed him. Me not liking him stems from that fact only. If he were good I would like him.

We won tonight DESPITE Theo. Just like most of our wins with him in goal last year. We basically are forced to score at least 4 goals when he's in there to win. Varly's stats this year blow Theo's out of the water. Wins, save %, GAA are all much better.

Posted by: ranndino

AGREE COMPLETELY. Two goals on 4 shots! And, though we won, his save percentage was only 84%. We won in spite of him. I am tired of him being so unpredictable and unfocused. If I were Boudreau, I wouldn't use him at this point. I only hope that Varly gets well soon and is not someone who has frequent injuries and illnesses.

Agree 100% about Nicky. I've been a fan of his from day one. He just keeps getting better and better. And that baby face is deceptive...he is so tough to play against.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 11, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Even if some of the goals were not completely on theo, it is still his job to stop some of those and he didn't. None of those goals were impossible to stop...ganted they might have been difficult. He needed to stop at least a couple. Even when he madestops tonight, he looked shaky

Posted by: capscoach | December 11, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

@ Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I'm not exaggerating anything. We can agree to disagree on Theo, but you can ask anyone around the NHL and most people consider Theo to be the laughing stock of the league these days.

You're also wrong about people here not ragging on Varly when he struggled slightly at the start of the season. There were people posting how they're starting to have doubts that he can play in the NHL and calling for him to be sent down.

Anyway, I'm done for the night. Congrats on the win. Tomorrow night's game is on HNIC, which means it's on NHL Network in HD across the US. Hopefully we're not too tired. Green got rocked quite a few times tonight. Hopefully he gets as much rest as he can and isn't hurting too much.

Posted by: ranndino | December 11, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Theo bashers... so hypothetically, if a goalie gives up 2 early goals they suck? What if both goals were difficult, well-placed goals? What if that same goalie makes a couple of key saves later to keep the team in the game until his team can pull it out? I'm not going to keep arguing on this one, just tired of fans picking apart players despite their efforts simply because "they don't like them".

"greens mistake directly lead to the third."

Yes it was a horrible play by Green but he can still stop that.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Theo gave up one terrible goal and the third one wasn't a good goal either.

he didn't have a good game, you don't have to be a "Theo basher" to see that.

Posted by: joek443 | December 11, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

rachel216 - I think what happened to Green was more of a great read by Gleason. He may have been completely screened on the pass and sometimes crap just happens. Granted, Green was down on his play during the interview, but at times you just need to give kudos to the others for making something happen.

Posted by: gonchpup | December 11, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A resilient come from behind win even though it should've been in regulation. I'm still on the fence about the Gleason goal - Theo was above the crease and challenged but give Gleason credit - it was a hell of a blast. I really think only the 2nd goal was Theo. The first one - what can you do when Green is hurt at the other end. S*** happens.

Welcome back Knuble - some great chances. He'll bury those but at least he's getting back into the groove.

Defense got too loose with the odd-man rushes tonight. Yikes. Tighten up.

Green - great shot on the OT winner. Way to make up for that telegraphed pass on the game-tying goal for Carolina.

Bottomline - they came back when falling behind and didn't give up. They came away with the two points they needed. No matter how you get them - a win is a win.

On to Toronto to get the Leafs. Time for Neuvy to get some action.

It's been a two point night.

Ice Breakers Goal Shakers.

I am not saying it was Theo's finest outings, but they won, he made some good saves, the goals against were not misplays or extremely weak, yet Caps fans need to find something to fault every night.

Posted by: gonchpup | December 11, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

joek443- Exactly. Everytime someone says something bad about Theo, you're called a Theo basher. The truth is he was very shaky tonight. He was 12/15. I understand about all the defensive breakdowns but Varly faces that too.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 11, 2009 10:22 PM | Report abuse

For those who are saying Theo should have had the last goal how many of you have actually played goalie at any kind of high level. A shot that hard you don't have any time to react to the shot you have to just hope it hits you and Gleason put the shot right below the cross bar. The second goal Theo should have had and at least one of the goals against Buffalo were weak too but you can't say that the last goal was in any way his fault.

Jonathan6 - Well put. Also, I find myself defending Theo tonight and I think you might be seeing things more my way. Even that 2nd goal he played correctly... he had position with the post, stick on the ice, and the puck popped up and glanced off the side of his mask. No 5-holes or sloppy rebound goals. Hey, I love Varly in net too, but when he can't go I'm fine with Theo.

Posted by: gonchpup | December 11, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

@Gonchpup - well put as well. You are spot on with your post. Some lucky bounces and Green going down on the first goal and maybe it's really a 3-1 win tonight.

Everyone whose jumping on Theo really needs to back off. I've knocked Theo when he's been off but wasn't much he could do. It's one thing if Theo on the third goal was back in the crease but he was out above it to challenge. Either way - he gets the win. :)

Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 11, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

just to be clear - i think varly is better than theo. i don't feel as anxious when varly is in net as i do when theo is. theo is not the 'hack' goalie that he is portrayed to be here. he is here doing exactly what he was signed to do - be solid enough to win while the young guys are being groomed - just as planned by GMGM.
cut the guy a little slack - we are lucky he didn't just hang up his skates after his family tragedy this summer.

this is my point - he didn't play well - caps still won - but it coulda/shoulda/woulda been ...

not every game is going to be 6-2's and 8-1's. this team will have some stinkers and hang on or come back to win and they'll also play well and end up losing. it shouldn't be about what it could have been - but what it turned out to be

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 11, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

capscoach - If it wasn't for that one "good save" we would have lost 4 - 3, eh? Beside the fact that there are several on here tonight that just don't care for Theo, some seem to think that since 2 were scored on the first 4 shots, he deserved a hanging. As icehammer97 stated, Gleason's goal was a hell of a shot. My point is that if Theo were to have made those saves, they would have been in no way considered routine. For that reason, since he didn't, they should not be considered weak.

i'll take a pass on Theo. It wasn't his best game but he didn't play horribly either. And I don't think we played terribly well, especially at the start. We controlling the puck but didn't seem determined with the puck. Our passes just weren't connecting. they weren't quite in sync at first. And it was definitely an off night for Ovi. But they hung in there and picked up their game. We have been complaining so long about letting go of the 3rd period. Well the boys seemed to have conquered that tendency--they played so much better at the end of the 2nd and into the 3rd. Of course the line change back to Ovi, Backs, Semin probably helped too. Still mad we didn't win in regulation but very happy we got two points. And happy that the Devils lost to the Panthers. Any NHL team can have an on or off night.

His nickname is "Threeormore" for a reason.

It's not rocket science. When Jose is in goal, you need to score at least 4 goals to win. The Caps scored 4 (in OT), and won. I've learned at this point that it's all about expectation management - when Theo is in goal, the Caps start down 3-0 when the puck is dropped.

Accept it, learn it, live it, love it. You will be happier for it. The opposing team could take 15 shots or 50, it doesn't matter, he's going to let in at least three of them, it's who he is.

@randinno -- No, this was not one of Theo's best games, and yes, Varly, is likely to mature into a better goalie. But at this point, we're two and a half months into the season, and Theo's record is 8-4-4. He was pulled in NJ in November, and left with an injury against San Jose in October. If, " Every time he plays 2 good games all his supporters on here get all excited, but than he goes back to sucking hard for a month" -- his record should be closer to 5 and 11.

If nothing else, he has been encouraging Varly and mentoring Perrault. (Varly has said in an interview that he was surprised that how supportive Theo was during last year's playoffs). And, in light of being benched for last year's playoffs and suffering family tragedy this summer, I think he deserves some credit and respect for a professional attitude and example for the rest of the team.

VTDuffman:
buying into the threeormore are you?

theo this season:
16 starts -> 8 games with 2 or fewer goals in regulation (4 others at 3 goals)
last season 55 starts -> 24 at 2 or fewer in reg (14 others at 3)

again - he is not an elite goalie - but he does what he is supposed to do
those who just don't like him will see what they want to see - but it is just not true

Another win, another two points, another whine festival by CapsFan. Theo was good enough for the team to win. Get over yourselves.
