Tonight's lineup: Hurricanes at Caps

Jose Theodore is set to start at Verizon Center and he's expected to oppose Carolina's Manny Legace.

A couple of familiar faces will be the 'Canes lineup. I'm told Brian Pothier will be paired with Tim Gleason, while Oskar Osala will skate on a line with Rod Brind'Amour and Sergei Samsonov.

The rest of the Caps' lineup, meantime, should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Fleischmann-Morrison-Semin
Laich-Belanger-Walker
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Corvo
Morrisonn-Carlson

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

Check back later for some postgame video/notes/quotes.

(from previous thread)

What are you talking about? Your reply makes no sense at all! This is a blog and hockey is a game, not the military! By your logic all the people who criticized Glen Hanlon's coaching style are trolls and traitors to the team because they questioned the coach. Open dialogue is a good thing because there is a good chance of learning something.

does anybody know where I can watch the game online for free? or atleast listen to it.

Posted by: capsfan5252 | March 10, 2010 6:52 PM | Report abuse

I understand that Bruce is just testing out various lines to find out what works well and what doesn't, but I think the lines should be:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Belanger-Semin
Fleischmann-Morrison-Fehr
Walker-Steckel-Bradley

Green-Schultz
Alzner-Carlson/Erskine/Jurcina
Corvo-Poti

Not that it affects the Caps in any way, but it looks like the Bears are making alternate plans in case John Carlson stays in DC through the playoffs. Today defenseman Grant Lewis, who is Thrashers property, was reassigned from the Chicago Wolves to the Bears. It's strictly a loan; he will remain Thrashers property.

Off topic from Caps' news, and I don't know if anyone else has brought it up already, but how the heck is Cooke not suspended for his hit on Savard? What a joke!

Posted by: elicea | March 10, 2010 6:54 PM | Report abuse

also way off topic but i found interesting. Chris Chelios was called up by atlanta today.

Posted by: natresgroup | March 10, 2010 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Cuz that's the way the Cookie crumbles, at least when the Cooke plays in Penguin-town. It's the NHL showing it's perference for some teams and not others, cf. the Richards hit.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 10, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

As bad as Cooke's hit was, it is technically legal. The NHL has no problem suspending Cooke. He was suspended at least once earlier this season. The GMs just need to make head shots illegal.

@ ablake70: I think it's disheartening when fans try to overly question the way things are being done with their team. I get that there's a sense of ownership but really, I can't see us doubting everything that's going on, with the acquisitions and our current rosters, when the season hasn't fully played itself out. Today, we can say how much we think someone blows but watch them tear it up beyond our expectations during the rest of the season and into the playoffs. And then what? Pssh. You look dumb for writing people or actions off before they could be justly evaluated. But true, dialog it to death. You're entitled to that. I'd like to just watch the game without someone having to tell me that the coach or the manager blow or a player shouldn't be here, but they'll still watch anyways because really, they're not hoping for a win. They seem more interested in being proven right. What a killjoy.

yes - more pressure on the puck seems to work - they just need to do it more often

and now they get a chance for another PK

Posted by: richmondphil | March 10, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

I need to see the replay but somebody left that guy wide open at the side of the net. I know Poti and Corvo were out there.

We're lucky Carolina didn't score on that penalty shot. I also want to see what happened to allow that breakaway. I know Green was way up on the left side after carrying the puck across the blue line.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

No shut out for Legace tonight!
Or Theo:(

@ LeftCoastCapsFan

I get what you are saying. I too grow tired of hearing Green sucks, Semin is lazy and should be traded, Jose Threeormore, Schultz can't skate etc. I also grow tired of posters constantly complaining about the Bettman conspiracy, "Cindy Crysby", and which refs are out to screw the Caps. But the purpose of this board is to give us fans a place to express our opinions. It seems some posters try to run off dissenters by labeling them trolls. I've just seen too much of that on these and other boards.

I've noticed that tends to happen with the Poti-Corvo pairing.

As for Green, I thought he was stick handling a little longer than he needed to.

Posted by: elicea | March 10, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Looked like that was Corvo's man. He tried to recover, but was already turned around. Second too late.

Oh well.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 10, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Corvo and Morrison were standing right on top of each other and neither of them was really covering anybody. I don't know who was responsible for the guy behind the net but that guy was completely unmarked.

Let's leave the coaching and the managing to of all people, the coaches and the general manager. They're not called that because their real names are too hard to remember or pronounce. Enjoy the game! If we win, great. If we don't, the team will try to fix it.

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | March 10, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

LeftCoast why don't you just admit that you're not here to discuss hockey but rather just to be a pom-pom waving cheerleader. You really have no concept of what a message board is all about. Just because you don't "get it" it doesn't mean that all other fans are too stupid to be able to discuss things like lineups and coaching decisions.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 10, 2010 9:37 PM | Report abuse

I also saw that BB went down the tunnel pretty fast.

Not sure Greenie deserved player of the game...that pass that was intercepted was horrible!

Posted by: capscoach | March 10, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

A win is a win I guess. But the guys look very shaky defensively, lots of bad penalties were taken, and the PK is still MIA. One of these games the Caps are going to run into a team that is finishing its good opportunities, and they're going to put up 6 or 7 on us. Numerous golden opportunities are being given up every game.

Nice shot by Flash. Great pass by Belanger. A good win, but I hope Carolina doesn't make the playoffs. I really don't want the Caps to face them in the first round. And even though he didn't score, I thought Brooks was the player of the game.

Posted by: ablake70 | March 10, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I thought Morrisonn may have been our best defenseman tonight. He was rested and had something to prove after that hiccup in his last game.

It was great to see Flash seal it but he flubbed the shot... again. If he ever gains a little more composure on his scoring chances, he could be a 40+ goal scorer at this level, assuming he continues to play on the 2nd line and the PP.

Corvo and Green freak me out at times with their decision-making. At least Green made up for it tonight. Both of them need to cut down on the bad plays.

I like what I'm seeing from Carlson. He'll keep getting better with more NHL games under his belt.

I like Walker's grit and cycling skills.

Steckel was solid tonight.

Theodore was very good and kept the lead for us.

Semin has been mostly outstanding since the break.

Ovechkin was dangling tonight. He's playing less risky recently.

Backstrom is almost back to his normal self.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

ShaMO had 7 hits, and played a good game. I think he might've been involved in one of the screened Theo goals, but not sure.

Bradley had 4 hits. Definetely trying to keep his roster spot.

Me thinks Gordon is going to get a healthy scratch next game. Though 80% on the faceoffs tonight..not bad at all.

"Not sure Greenie deserved player of the game...that pass that was intercepted was horrible!
Posted by: capscoach "
Seems to me Green doesn't want to pass to Schultz. The play to make was back around the boards to Schultz only Shultz was standing in the slot like he always does.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | March 10, 2010 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Yea, I forgot about Laich. He's been playing some great hockey. He seems to be improving and adding to his game. I guess all the hard work is paying off.

Belanger looks pretty good. He backchecks well and seems to be smart positionally. He's got good vision and passing skills.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

I don't blame Boudreau for not being happy after the game.

I know it's hard to keep up a sense of urgency with the Caps' situation in the standings but there is no good excuse for some of the bad decision-making and defensive breakdowns.

I did think our PK was very good tonight. I don't think the Canes had many shots on goal during their PPs. The only goal they scored came on a rush into the zone. The Caps were pretty solid when the Canes did manage to get set up.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Belanger was 1-for-9 in faceoffs. Ouch.

We only had 11 blocked shots to 23 for the Canes.

You can't always just look at numbers but the Caps usually do come out on the losing end in that statistic. More sacrifice, boys.

i've seen BB jump up and down on the bench on OT winners before - tonight he was the first one off the bench and down the tunnel - i don't think he's too happy

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 10, 2010 9:34 PM

Bruce was extremely happy that Flash scored the GWG. He can't stop smiling talking about Flash in the Post game press conference. He just didn't want us to see his joyous smile at the moment.

If the rotation must continue, I would like to see Knuble benched for a few games. He's a great player, but at 37, he's the one player I am concerned about wearing down.

then maybe he wasn't too pleased that he still has a LOT of work to do to get this team ready for the playoffs - line combo's, PK, choosing a #1 goalie, etc

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 10, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

@ablake70

I think it's hard to sit Knuble but he could certainly use the rest. I think there are good arguments for and against that idea. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a couple of days off.

With the condensed schedule, one of the positives of McPhee loading up the roster and us being in a good situation in the standings is the option to rest our guys more than most other teams can do.

There's the risk of jacking with chemistry but rested legs and healthier bodies come playoff time could turn out to be a benefit.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Not that it's a big deal but I believe our magic number to clinch the division is now at 1 point.

A point gained by us or lost by Atlanta and the division is locked up. I think we would have them beat in every tiebreaker scenario.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

@ Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I agree. I think

-the goalie situation will play itself out in the next few weeks. Both are capable playoff goalies IMO.'

-BB already has his lines settled but doesn't want to upset anyone.

-PK needs more Laich, Semin and Backstrom and less Steckel and Gordon. Also, Schultz hasn't looked very good on the PK in the past couple games. He seems lost.

@ tmac2yao

If Knuble were a few years younger or a 3rd or 4th line guy, I wouldn't think of sitting him. But being 37, I wonder if the top line minutes will wear him down over the playoff run.

I thought one of BB's biggest mistakes last year was playing Feds 17-18mins a game. He clearly looked worn down by the end of Pens series. Meanwhile, everyone raved about how effective Guerin was for the Pens, yet he only played around 12 mins per game.

I think Knuble is great for the top line, but not playing the same minutes as Ovi and Backstrom. Maybe BB should try someone else on the top line with Ovi and Backstrom for a few games. I'd pick Fehr because we already know Semin can play with them.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A win is a win is a win. There were great things and not so great things.

First @ZMEGA - you stated that the PK was still MIA. What game were you watching early on? The PK was awesome to start. It's about time Coach Evason let this team get aggressive and get after it. Even in Tarik's article the guys acquired in trades were saying how it was more passive here. I got news for you - PASSIVE IS OUT AND AGGRESSIVE IS IN. When this team got on Carolina - they had no time to set up. The only PP goal by Carolina was in transition and was a screen. Theo had no chance. Overall PK was better but stay aggressive.

MIKE GREEN ON OFFENSE: Superior asset. When he gets the shot - he's money most of the time.

MIKE GREEN ON DEFENSE: Superior liability. His one clearing pass led to a goal. Get it up the boards. His defensive zone play is still not where it can be. He needs to be better and until he starts playing smarter in his zone he will remain a liability.

FLEISCHMAN - Nice shot on the game winner. Glad to see him dent the twine again.

THEODORE - Another good one between the pipes tonight. Great stop on the penalty shot and good rebound control most of the time.

PROPS TO CAROLINA - Coming into tonight this team was 17-8 in its last 25 games. They always fight the Caps hard and the Caps came away with a win over an improved team.

Back to the booth to finish the homestand as the Bolts come back for another shot at VC on Friday.

It's been a two point night.

@ablake70

I think you may be on to something. Instead of sitting Knuble, maybe just cut down his minutes. I'd also like to see Fehr on the top line for a few games. His play since the break seems to warrant the opportunity.

On another note, we've looked pretty good in 4-on-4 situations recently after struggling most of the season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

It looks like one of Backstrom's assists was taken away so he's still one away from 55.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 10:50 PM | Report abuse

@ tmac2yao

4 on 4 looked really good. The guys controlled the puck well and Sarge did a good job keeping it out of the defensive zone. Corvo really redeemed himself in OT. It looked like Legace was so distracted by Corvo flying towards the net that he reacted late to Flash.

Posted by: ablake70 | March 10, 2010 10:51 PM | Report abuse

I thought Belanger played really well but what the heck has happened to his face-off ability?

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 10, 2010 10:59 PM | Report abuse

I'm still not sure about the Corvo deal. Pothier, alone, looked better than him tonight.

I'm not sure how Osala was going to crack the lineup since he's a LW and I know 2nd round picks are not that big of a deal but Pothier, Osala plus a 2nd round pick seems a bit steep for Corvo at this point.

If you factor in that Corvo won't even be fully recovered from that cut tendon until next season (so he says) and that Pothier was already familiar with our systems while Corvo only has a few weeks to get adjusted to top 4 minutes, I'm sort of left scratching my head.

Hopefully, he brings us a considerable upgrade over Pothier in the coming weeks, otherwise the deal just doesn't seem to make much sense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao: I had a similar thought tonight about Pothier. He had a really solid game (although he was a -1). I think they thought that Corvo would bring some toughness that Pothier lacks, but we sure haven't seen it so far.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 10, 2010 11:06 PM | Report abuse

I don't think toughness was probably much of a factor in their thought process. Corvo is a little stronger than Pothier but he's about as non-physical as they come for defensemen.

I'm thinking they liked his righthand shot, his offensive ability and his speed.

The problem is that Corvo keeps saying he won't be fully recovered until next season. If that's true, he won't be as fast or dangerous carrying the puck.

Time will tell. I'm pulling for Corvo.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 11:14 PM | Report abuse

It is hard to overlook that whole thing about him beating up a woman though, even if it was a long time ago.

Pothier was a class act and a great locker room guy. Hopefully, Corvo has become a much better person off the ice and doesn't bring any bad vibes to the team.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 11:18 PM | Report abuse

All in all it was a good game. I thought our best defensive pairing tonight was Morrison and Carlson by far. Poti and Corvo were awful. I posted the other day about Green not being good defensively and being out of position and got blasted on the boards. Seems I'm not the only one tonight. He did score twice tonight, but the bad defensive play will come back to haunt us.

Flash played amazing tonight. The regulars all played pretty well too. So far, I'm not too impressed with any of our pick ups. Hopefully they will get better after a few more games to adjust.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | March 10, 2010 11:21 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, the past behavioral problem is a disturbing. I hated to see Pothier go. I wish he had gotten the kind of minutes with the Caps that Carolina is giving him. But, BB knows Corvo pretty well and he is happy to have him. So, I expect him to do really well.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 10, 2010 11:22 PM | Report abuse

According to espn.com, Backstrom was the number 1 star. Seems like a strange choice.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | March 10, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse

@CAPSHOCKEY2

I wouldn't go that far. It's hard to complain about Walker's play. He's doing just about everything that was expected out of somebody in his role, plus a little more.

Belanger looks good to me. I think he's an upgrade over Morrison and will only get better down the stretch. He seems to be the type of player that will pick up things quickly. If nothing else, he'll put pressure Morrison to step his game up or lose ice time.

My guess is that Belanger ends up being ahead of Morrison on the depth chart by the end of the season. Morrison has played better though in recent games, probably in part due to Belanger's presence.

In general, I have a feeling that Belanger and Walker may end up being the best acquisitions out of the bunch, even though Corvo was considered the big deal.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 11:29 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if they factored in that Backstrom matched Gretzky and Stasny as the only 3 players in NHL history to have 55 assists or more in their first 3 seasons.

Unfortunately, it looks like one of Backstrom's assists was taken away so he's still at 54.

If they picked him for another reason, I have no problem with it. He's usually our best two-way player game in and game out although I thought Semin was probably our best forward tonight.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 10, 2010 11:33 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

I will agree that Belanger is the best of the group. He seems to be struggling with the system a bit, but I'm sure that he will get better. Not sure I agree with Walker, he got lucky his first game. I don't think he's any better than our other 4th liners. I guess it's good to have depth, but I don't think he was an upgrade.

Corvo has shown me nothing to this point except he knows how to get beat. Not sure he is much of an upgrade on Pothier especially considering what we gave up. I really wish they would have went for one of the better D men that were on the market.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | March 10, 2010 11:36 PM | Report abuse

I thought some of the choices for the Three Stars of the game were a little odd. Green should have at least been the 2nd star, if not the first for the Caps. Backstrom the first star? What were they thinking? Nicky's a good player and I appreciate his talents a lot but he's not my vote for 1st star tonight.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 10, 2010 11:36 PM | Report abuse

@CapsFan75

Again, I think it might have been because they thought Backstrom tied Gretzky and Stasny with 55+ assists in his first 3 season. They may have made the picks before one of Backstrom's assists got taken away.

Also, saying Backstrom is a good player is an understatement if I've ever seen one. I know you didn't mean anything by it but Fleischmann is a good player. Laich is a good player. Backstrom is an elite player. He's much more than good.

Other thoughts on game.

1) Based on save percentage, Theo wasn't bad but not exactly at his sharpest. (I figure the kid will be back between the pipes on Friday, with Theo going on Sunday vs Chicago.)

2) Ironically, in the Tampa game, Knuble scored 2 goals, one when on the ice with the 1st line cast of characters and one with the 2nd line cast of characters. While today, he was on the ice for 2 goals against (one with the 1st line and the other with the 2nd line). Not his day.

Will Boudreau do any more rotation of people as "healthy" scratches for Friday's game? I assume that for the Chicago game, BB will play his best lineup. And Fehr and Chimera will be back.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 11, 2010 12:00 AM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

I know I understated Nicky's goodness. Earlier, it hadn't dawned on me that he had tied Gretzky and Stastny in points in his 1st three seasons.

Nicky, in my humble opinion, would be the hardest guy in the lineup to replace and would be missed more when out than any of our other guys.

Little bit of a change in topic, but has anyone noticed that there haven't been any interviews of Ovi lately?

Posted by: dfe1 | March 11, 2010 12:10 AM | Report abuse

@ CapsFan75

I wouldn't be shocked to see Knuble and Semin/Belanger/or Laich sit next game to be fair. I think Ovi, Backstrom, and Green are the only guys immune to the rotation.

@dfe1

I didn't check tonight, but Ovi gave an interview to a Versus reporter during one of the intermissions Monday night.

Posted by: ablake70 | March 11, 2010 12:15 AM | Report abuse

@dfe1

If the Caps had won on Monday, there would have been interviews of Ovi.

I guess Ovi's lost all his friends in the press after the Olympics. (I'm sure he still has some in Washington.)

Maybe since we have so many new guys, they've been the real story as of late. (Along with playing the game of "who will be today's scratches")

@CapsFan75: Outside of Wilbon who really likes Ovie in this town?

Posted by: eorr | March 11, 2010 12:21 AM | Report abuse

@ablake70

I figure, if we were scratching a good player next game, Knuble would be the one scratched. He had an off day. (This would not be something done normally, even after an off day.)

I doubt if they'd scratch Laich since he has a consecutive game playing streak going -- for the last 3 or more years. Semin would probably not be scratched for the next game either since he's started scoring again.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 11, 2010 12:22 AM | Report abuse

@ CapsFan75

I think Semin and Laich have to be candidates to sit to keep the peace in the locker room. A argument can be made that Semin is an elite player, but he has missed games this year. And I certainly don't think the Laich's streak argument would go over to well after Flash got benched. This is why I hate the rotation.
