Tonight's Lineup: Hurricanes at Capitals

Jose Theodore gets the start in net and will oppose Cam Ward tonight at Verizon Center. Also, Sergei Fedorov (flu-like symptoms) and Donald Brashear (sprained knee) are out and Hershey call-up Keith Aucoin is in.

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Kozlov
Laich-Aucoin-Fehr
Steckel-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Erskine
Schultz-Jurcina

How's The Ice?
One thing to look for tonight: the quality of the ice. The Harlem Globetrotters game went a little long this afternoon, leaving the Verizon Center operations staff scrambling to get the ice ready in time (the game started at 1 p.m.). The last board wasn't removed from the ice surface until 5:58 and the first Zamboni pass wasn't until a few minutes later. The building, I'm told, opened the doors to the public about 10 minutes later than usual -- just after the ice was scraped for the first time.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 14, 2009 6:51 PM | Report abuse

Forgive me Tarik...
But aren't we just talking about varying degrees of crappy?
I've never heard anyone describe the ice at Verizon in endearing terms.

Posted by: pmoravek | March 14, 2009 6:51 PM | Report abuse

pmoravek, I guess its just a ridiculously high degree of "crappy" tonight.
Hoping for no injuries tonight and a Caps win!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 6:54 PM | Report abuse

LOL...
It seriously is a pretty big problem.
We skated an exhibition game there once and the ice actually felt spongy!
It's a disgrace and it's no wonder we have Koz & Poti with recurring groin issues.

Posted by: pmoravek | March 14, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Tarik- early this year you told me you were doing an article on the poor ice conditions at VC. Each time the VC ice condition is brought up someone sweeps it under the rug. The team is heavily invested in high dollar, high skills players who are going to benefit from excellent ice. Who is the lowest common denominator in this problem- Abe Polin? I know Ted, Boudreau, and the players have all said they are unhappy with the situation. Quite frankly as a partial ticket holder I am tired of seeing the puck bounce all over the place in the 3rd period. Once the outdoors temp gets over 60 things go very bad. This is not good for a team that is hoping to play deep into June for the next decade.

Posted by: daddy_axe | March 14, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Same for both teams but bad ice hurts our run and gun style more.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Anyone know of any good free/cheap links to watch game online tonight? Thanks

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Let's see if Semin's going to have enough opportunities to shoot at the goal with Ovechkin on the same line... :-)

No links for tonight??

jmu,
guess I should have read first!

Although doesn't seem to be working - anyone else getting the justin tv link to work?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

crappy ice and injuries, should be tough but I think we can pull this one out. Go Caps!

Posted by: WizardsExtreme | March 14, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Hey, did you see Semin talking to a linesman? Speaks English?...

Posted by: fnralch | March 14, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Blaming Abe Pollin for the crappy ice is absurd. You should be thankful to him instead of disrespectful, after all, without him you would only have the crappy Redskins and the Nats to support, AND he didn't rip-off the tax payer to put hockey, and basketball (both men and women) in this town. Should I tell you that the Verizon area was a run-down area before the center?

Posted by: tELb | March 14, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Justintv is not working for me either. Any other suggestions?

Posted by: The_Stanley_Caps | March 14, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

fnralch, LOL! Semin speaks English pretty well. He talks to his North American teammates all the time. I guess he just hates/doesn't feel comfortable giving interviews, so he pretends he doesn't.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Would someone please give me a link to the game,I live in Ga. so it's hard to get a caps game here,

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Lets go boys lets tie this up

Posted by: mauree | March 14, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

That locker guy called out that line.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

after a great shift by Steckel's line, Mike Green with the dopiest turnover yet leading to the goal. He's such a liability sometimes because he overhandles that puck.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Seem to me like Theo should have stopped it.

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Canes aren't afraid of us in anyway, that much is obvious and it seems they realize their best chance to beat us is with their speed and forecheck

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green!

Posted by: mauree | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Seem to me like Theo should have stopped it.

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 7:24 PM

easy to say, he probably wasn't expecting Mike green (who just scored btw) to cough up the puck in that manner

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

that was puuuurty.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Hell of a pass from Semin.

Posted by: fnralch | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

backstrom with the puuurty setups tonight.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 14, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

We need to find a tough guy who has some skill who can play on a line with Semin. Find that guy(s), sign Semin, and we have two of the healthiest, best-est, players in the league!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

easy to say, he probably wasn't expecting Mike green (who just scored btw) to cough up the puck in that manner

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 7:25 PM

From our point of view everything is easy.
I wasn't blaming the goal only on Theo, but he did have a clear view of the shot and he was aware it was coming. Reflexes were a bit slow? Hard to tell.

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Schultz with a bullseye on his chest =- just took huge hits from Ruutu and Cole

great backcheck by ovy on Staal on the last shift after another Green turnover and a great move on Erskine

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

These recent games have had a "playoff" feel, do we have enough vets?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Come on guys, take this chance now.

Anyone think Ovie gets 50 tonight?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

OVI!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Good first period.

Does comcast have some rule about not showing faceoffs? How many Ovie scoring opportunities have we missed because Comcast has the camera on some shmoe on the bench? Seriously pissing me off!

Posted by: patrone | March 14, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Semin would be one of the top 5 point leaders if he had not been injured.

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

some game in Tor tonight. 3-3 after 20 minutes. Did any goalies show up?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Is it bad that I thought, "Does this redneck know he's not at a NASCAR race?"

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

DaveUK, well, it says that Kipper & Darth Gerber are there, but neither of them have a SV% above .750.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

JMU,
I didn't actually think the teams were playing with empty nets!! :)

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Well, it is Brian Burke. He could be trying a new spin on the game.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Mauree,
Any alternative links - the atdhe one isn't working either!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 14, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

I'm just enjoying every millisecond Semin has a puck. He could have backpassed it to Green when Mike scored, however in this case a defender might have had enough time to block the shot. So Semin was kind of turning towards the goal effectively pulling the defender aside (which poor Canes guy did) and then with a sharp pass delivered it to Green. You've probably also noticed that the puck was somewhat behind Mike but that was, I guess, the only open lane. What a smart player.

Posted by: fnralch | March 14, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Dave, try the JTV one again. Someone on Japers mentioned it was working now.

yeesh. how is semin the only one back on that?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

stop being so fancy and shoot the puck on the f*@king net!!!! with four guys there, one will get the rebound and put it in!!!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 14, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Ovie, Semin, Backis and Green makes for on one and they CHOOSE GREENIE to shoot? Pathetic choice and instead of 4-1 we get 3-2 :(

Dave,

try refreshing JTV. It's working for me as well now.

Never saw a 5 on 1 before lol, that came back to haunt us though

Theo with awesome saves.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 14, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

This is far from over. Usually the Caps relax too much when it looks "that easy" to score. Seems like they're not letting lose the gas pedal, really hope that's the case. Keep crashing the net, keep up the pressure.

Posted by: mauree | March 14, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

The Bears are up 2-0 after 2 against the Baby Pens. Graham Mink has both goals for the Bears.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

LOL. Can Erskine be penalized for cross checking his own man?

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

22 saves in 2 periods, that's a bit high, baby pens with pressure?

Posted by: mauree | March 14, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

mauree, the Baby Pens have been giving the Bears fits all season after the Bears killed them in their first meeting.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

CAR player plants himself in front of Theo and nobody pushing him away. What the heck is Morrison doing in front of the net alone? Helping him to screen Theo? Clearing the crease should be in our blood come on boys!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

WHATS WITH ALL THESE PENALTIES!?!?!??!!?!?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Because Morisonn lost his stick it was 5 on 3 Carolina and they scored 3-4 :( damn timing ShaMo to lose Ur stick

Posted by: Hazz | March 14, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

the 1000th hooking penalty that semin has taken and then he compounds the problem by being overly fancy and not getting enough stick on the puck. all he had to do was run the guy over and separate him from the puck but he tries to steal it instead and the canes hold it in and score

this team is so frustrating sometimes, the skill guys make great plays and then follow it up with terrible plays

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Bloody Canes. We need Ovi to step up...but to get him on the ice, please no penalties!

Posted by: fnralch | March 14, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Hazz | March 14, 2009 8:41 PM

our entire d played great on the last pk esp mo and green and even schultz - the reason the goal got scored was semin had a chance out of the pen box to get the puck and have the play blown dead and he tried to get too cute and kinda whiffed

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 14, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Mike Milbury just said "When I was a General Manager we did this...blah blah blah" on HNIC. HOW did he ever become a GM? He was terrible as GM and he is terrible as a commentator.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Cstanton,
There have been 5 penalties by the caps and you concentrate only Semin's? The goal was not scored because of his penalty. He did not have time to hit the guy (rewind and watch it again) when he came out of the penalty box, he barely had time to stop the guy from shooting but he did.

Posted by: opita1 | March 14, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Grant McNeill has scored for the Bears, 3-1 now with about 14 minutes to go in the third.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Bears score again. GMac needs an assist now for a Gordie Howe hat trick. Unfortunately, the Pens also scored. Bears still up 3-1, 14 minutes left.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

ok...we need a goal in the first 2 min by the SOB line to help pad this lead!!!

Let's GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 14, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Pens scored again. Bears now up only 3-2.

Canes outhustling the Caps in this period big time. Some of the Caps are playing like the Lone Ranger. Not a good combo.

Come on Caps, dig deep, hustle and play smart.

Don Cherry is about to say something about Alex O on HNIC..after this interview of NJD Martin B. (It is on the NHL channel)

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

OMG, Cherry is very complimentary of the celebration restraint recently demonstrated by Alex O. He showed clips of his scoring in the Flyers game and tonights game.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

don cherry is an old fool. someone needs to take him out! OV hasn't done anything different than what he has always done!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 14, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Holy Cow! The second half of Hockey Night in Canada is just beginning and I am burnt out! I am not worthy to be Canadien!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

cherry is still a fool, but you do wonder if bruce had a talk w/ ovie about it.

and what's with the globetrotters running over. did they go into overtime against the generals? they should start those games at 12pm so they are over by nap time for the kiddies. it's one thing to take a backseat to the wiz or even georgetown, but the freaking globetrotters. wonder how many people were there. they should probably be playing at the armory on a day when the caps had a night game. what a joke. i hope ted is furious. no excuse for that show to run over. was there an encore for the bucket of confetti. joke.

Semin has been a different player in the last week or so. Did someone say something about his mama?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Don Cherry is in his St. Patrick's Day spirit tonight as he called Alex Paddy O'vechkin just before HNIC showed highlights of Alex scoring in the shootout. Then Cherry claimed that Alex is now listening to him...and he called Alex a good guy.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 14, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Don Cherry just said that Ovie listens for his advice in "celebrating a goal"!
Ovie rarely jumps on the glass, so he will jump soon, weather Cherry likes it or not :)

Posted by: Hazz | March 14, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

@dcsportsfan1

That was good

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 14, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

I love how Ovi's stopped jumping to the glass, but now all the other Caps are.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 14, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I was really missing Feds. First, faceoffs: we were 35:34 but with him it'd be much better. Then, in OT, we know well what he brings as a defender. hope he's back in Atlanta.

Posted by: fnralch | March 14, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of face-offs, Nyles is terrible in the last two games. He used to be pretty good, but no so much lately.

BB is going to get on the Caps for the last half of this game. Too many skill guys trying to be the hero with those stretch passes and just a terrible time clearing the zone with any sense of control

The Caps are better than they played tonight. The good news is that they took the best Carolina can play and still won.

Last note -- it was interesting to hear that BB kept the Sarge Juice pairing on the bench for most of the 3rd

The ice was horrible last night from what I could see in section 421. The arena has got to stop this basketball afternoon/hockey evening arrangement. How about reversing it if you have to have both the same day. Put the Caps on at 1 PM and move the Trotters to 8 PM...

Posted by: MikeL-Caps911 | March 15, 2009 12:37 PM | Report abuse

I loathe the fact that Cherry thinks his opinion matters. I'm a little mortified that if anything went down where Ovi was "asked" not to celebrate the way he does for the sake of protecting that bombastic old fool's reputation, then yeah, as a Caps fan, I'm in shock over that.

Regardless of how we're "supposed" to view Cherry and his stupid rants, I take offense that everyone in the NHL has to kiss his rear end out of habit. Like the dinosaurs and their extinction, I'd like for him to make room for the new stars and the new NHL, which he clearly is not suited for.

I highly doubt Ovi's listening to that old bat. Keep thinking that, Cherry. Rather you ride on Ovi's coattails instead of Sidney's baby stroller. Kinda' cramped in there, huh?
