Tonight's Lineup In Buffalo

Defenseman Tom Poti returns from a five-game absence while Alex Ovechkin remains in Russia. He's been skating in Moscow, I'm told, and barring any last-minute changes should be on the ice for practice on Monday. Eric Fehr, meantime, will be the other scratch.

Forwards
Laich-Backstrom-Kozlov
Steckel-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Schultz
Erskine-Jurcina

Theodore will start; Johnson will back up.

First? I'm surprised Ovechkin's skating over there you'd think he'd want to focus on just family while he was there, not like a few days off would torch his play. Although I guess if I was that good it'd be pretty hard for me to stay off the ice

I'm presuming that Semin is on the "second line" ... not Laich again.

Posted by: Cerealman | November 1, 2008 7:00 PM | Report abuse

@Tarik,

Which line is Laich on?

@Tarik,

Which line is Laich on?

Posted by: WCAPS1 | November 1, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

tarik-
you mistakenly have laich on both the 1st & 2nd lines... assuming semin should be on the left of the federov line?

Posted by: jason595 | November 1, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Cool. CSN+ on comcast in Alexandria is Wizards pre-game. YES!

/endsarcasm

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | November 1, 2008 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Is anybody else seeing the Wizards pre-game instead of the Caps game on CSN + right now? (I have Comcast as my provider).

Posted by: AMHV2772 | November 1, 2008 7:03 PM | Report abuse

IS the GAME ON TV???

Posted by: DCSPORTS | November 1, 2008 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Comcast had better fix this prior to the drop of the puck. Argh.

Posted by: Jeff_ | November 1, 2008 7:07 PM | Report abuse

I'm really unhappy with CSN so far this season. This is their second big error with the Caps already.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 7:07 PM | Report abuse

It has always been like this. Every single season it is like they forget to do stuff after 4 or 5 months.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | November 1, 2008 7:09 PM | Report abuse

the csn website says Caps pregame on CSN+, or Ch4 here in Montgomery County. And it's not on?!!!

Posted by: Max23 | November 1, 2008 7:10 PM | Report abuse

And to make it worse Buffalo scored...1-0.

Posted by: Jeff_ | November 1, 2008 7:10 PM | Report abuse

No game again!! Nice that the wizards are losing on three different channels.

Sorry folks, it's fixed. I was typing and blogging at the same time.

BTW, remember what I said about Green's foot. Sure looked like it was bothering him on Vanek's goal.

Posted by: el_bashir | November 1, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Ugh - Vanek scores and now caps on the PK. Jurcina in the box.

Posted by: wendel2 | November 1, 2008 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Comcast is going to hear about this. I really don't want to watch the Wizards.

Comcast is too iffy for me, when it's deployed, I wanna pay my $140/month to FIOS!!!!

Posted by: Max23 | November 1, 2008 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Is it only affecting Comcast customers? Or FIOS, Direct TV too?

Posted by: AMHV2772 | November 1, 2008 7:19 PM | Report abuse

what the?? it's not playing on center ice either.

Posted by: 1Amy1 | November 1, 2008 7:20 PM | Report abuse

as much as I love the caps. I WOULD MUCH RATHER WATCH BOOOK EVENTS ON CSN + .

Who's With me???

Somebody shoot me

Posted by: DCSPORTS | November 1, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

where the hell is CSN plus in Frederick!??? Come on Comacast!

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

FIOS has it on channel 1

Posted by: yrb1 | November 1, 2008 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Okay, if anyone has visual, can they share what happened on first shot first Buffalo goal?

Is it just a thing with JT that he has to get behind before he can play?

I am not knocking him necessarily, just getting a little concerned that we are almost always playing from behind.

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 1, 2008 7:24 PM | Report abuse

i just found out they are have technical difficulties it's on Channel 97.

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:25 PM | Report abuse

It's supposed to be on channel 77 in Arlington. I just called Comcast to complain. They said they'll pass the issue along and try to fix it.

Just saw text at the bottom of the screen saying they're trying to fix the "technical difficulties." How hard could this be?

Posted by: bloggingsbyboz | November 1, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and could someone please give Brash the memo that taking penalties does not help the Caps!

Sheesh. Should I be glad that I cannot actually watch the game on the cable channel that I am paying for?

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 1, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Overall, TV an radio coverage is very lacking. Only on AM radio? What gives? Lose the broadcast outside of Centreville.

Absolutely miserable.

Here, guys. Should work for everybody.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Right where we want them...up 2 - 0.

Posted by: WCAPS1 | November 1, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the link _jordan!

Which i could watch it bigger than 3", but a huge improvement anyway. I want some money back from Comcast.

Posted by: AMHV2772 | November 1, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

I'd personally prefer our goalie doesn't block shots with his back while standing up but a 5 on 3 pp isn't helping him very much

Posted by: austinsteve | November 1, 2008 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Went to the link...just a black screen

Posted by: Kellyinbalto | November 1, 2008 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Okay it's on now Theodore just made a nice glove save

Posted by: dcfury | November 1, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: AMHV2772 | November 1, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Too bad you can't pull the D.. jesus christ. Back line guys need to WAKE UP.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 7:41 PM | Report abuse

2zip boy that Brash is worth whatever it takes to sign him

Posted by: wendel2 | November 1, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Well, that was an ugly, sloppy period.

Posted by: Ames00 | November 1, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Ugg..got back just in time to see it go 3 zip! Comeon Caps...WAKE UP!

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Good thing Erskine was signed for 2 more years. Who else on this team could make a turnover like that? Not to mention he was going to be called for a penalty attempting to tie up his man ...who scored the 3rd goal anyhow.

Posted by: Jeff_ | November 1, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Buffalo broadcaster said there was already a delayed penalty on that 3rd goal too (if they hadn't scored)

I was going to stay chained to my Center Ice package to watch half the game but I think this is a good night to go watch the Texas/Texas Tech game

Posted by: austinsteve | November 1, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

ERSKINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God if we only had a D!

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

3-0 summary of period one...we suck. Green was horrible on Vanek on the first goal. Theo should've covered that post on the 2nd goal. 3rd goal once again our D fails to clear the puck when the period is winding down, and then lets pominvelle walk in on theo for an easy slip under his wide open pads. everyone behind the blue line sucks. this is sad

Posted by: capsfan387 | November 1, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

3 zip... yup this team is awesome talented hungry hardworking disciplined

3 zip... yup this team is awesome talented hungry hardworking disciplined

Posted by: wendel2 | November 1, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Clark should pratice scoring some goals instead of flying around with the Blue Devils.

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Angels i mean.

Posted by: marklee15 | November 1, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, that was visual that I did not need.

Don't know if I can take much more of this game. Steve Kolbe is great, but he gives me heart palpitations so I was already a little wired. Then I get to actually see the game in time for Mike's turnover and Jose's rebound fiasco.

I am going to have another beer, go to my happy place, and watch highlights from the Penguins game during intermission.

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 1, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

So, I didn't watch most of the 1st period thanks to Comcast. Obviously it was pretty ugly, as the score board shows.

While this game doesn't look good, if the Caps can get on the board quickly in the second and take control we know this team can come back from 3-0 deficits.

But if the D can't figure out how to negate the speed of Buffalo, and continues to turn the puck over, it's only going to get uglier.

Oh, and a full PP, or maybe even a 5 on 3, wouldn't hurt to get things going.

Posted by: Jeff_ | November 1, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

jose is TERRIBLE! is it me or does this team look so different from last year?

Posted by: rachel216 | November 1, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

@ rachel,

Jose is getting hung out to dry. Our D has been the problem pretty much this year. So much for that report about how we're the best D team in the league or whatever it was.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Erskine is absolutely HORRIBLE. Sure, fire a lazer to your partner that is waaaay off. Geez, I have two more years of this clown? Argh

Come on - we need a quick PP goal!

Posted by: Ames00 | November 1, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

ok im going to go on a rant. why does bruce hate change? last yr during the playoffs he refused to give olie a change when huet was not playing well. he refuses to give johnny a chance when theo is looking less then favorable. what is bruce afraid of. ok so feds is a fwd right? he tried him at D and he did great. green is more fit for a fwd then D man. with his shot he should be a fwd, he sucks at D now-a-days. why didn;t we give bourque, lepisto, sloan or alzner a chance. with the way our team is going why not change things up. or even change up the lines we have. put some 4th liners with 1st lners and switch it up try something new. WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF BRUCE! something is not working and we can't be any worse

Posted by: capsfan387 | November 1, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Needed to score on that 5-3.

That could be all she wrote for this one.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 1, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

At least they look alot better now, whats with the Caps either taking the first or the third off in pretty much every game this year?

Posted by: doncosmic | November 1, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Everyone looks like they're skating through mud out there. We're supposed to be a fast team.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

@ _jordan I disagree. second period was all washington. we kept puck control, back checked, fore checked, we outshot them. we killed penalties well. keeping the puck away. we even kept it around miller and got 3 or 4 shots in a row. so why are we still down 4-0? miller is doing great for one. we got in too big a hole early for two. and once again late in the period our D struggles to keep buffalo out and screen theo for an easy bank hander for vanek.

summary of period 2. ok ya we're still down and probly gunna lose now, but this period was signifcantly better. we looked like a good team and kept shots coming and stopped them from reaching theo for the most part. unfortanetly it doesn;t matter because we're still off the scoresheet and our hopes are dwindling. but i would have to say we played a helluva lot better this period

Posted by: capsfan387 | November 1, 2008 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Well that just about does it I think. Wow. At this point I am at a loss for words. I am so dissappointed in how they are playing. Nobody seems to have any intensity. I know it is still early in the season, but JT has done nothing yet to instill any confidence.

We need to start playing defense. Is Mo hurt now? Not like he has played up to the big raise he got in the off season. But sheesh the last thing we need in this game is to be short on D. Have we played enough games where we can bring someone up from Hershey to play D that can play D and will stick with the team?

It looked like we were starting to pick it up a bit, and then we had another breakdown and Jose let in another goal. We can argue whether he should have stopped that or whether Gordo running into him affected his play. Heck, maybe Gordo was so unsure of JT that he decided he needed to f-ing play goalie.

Time to have another beer and just hope that we do not hand Ryan Miller a shut out. Tampa put a 5-spot on this guy. Suddenly I am not looking forward to Nov 10th.

Posted by: mauree | November 1, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Maybe this team has read all the silly talk on this blog about how awesome they are...they have forgotten what you have to be willing to sacrifice to win constantly in the NHL. Defense is an attitude not just something the goalie and dmen are responsible for

Posted by: wendel2 | November 1, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

wow can't catch a break

Posted by: mauree | November 1, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

If the three shots off the posts go in, this is a different game. Terrible mix of iffy play and no luck tonight.

Posted by: _jordan | November 1, 2008 9:11 PM | Report abuse

News flash: These quotes are from Marc-Andre Fleury: You know, I really don't think Theodore is all that good. Sure, he has a gaping 5-hole and gives juicy rebounds and has an awkward way of play the puck, but other than that what has he got? Not much...

This looks like a good night to see what's on HBO...

I think all of the Caps should have to wear pink helmets at their next practice!

Except maybe for Brooks Laich and Boyd Gordon. Everyone else. Pink.

Posted by: Kim-3 | November 1, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

apparently I'm not able to watch online streams this time around (I'm out of the country)...

How was Theo? Could he have stopped some of those?

How was the team? Were we dominating but unlucky (theme of last year) or the effort just wasn't there?

Should we archive this as "we can't win them all" or was this loss due, in light of the poor effort showed in previous games?

Thanks if you take the time to answer these question, I'm desperate for first-hand infos on my Caps :D

Posted by: mauree | November 1, 2008 9:37 PM | Report abuse

I can credit my daughter for finding the positive on this nightmare of a game. Her exact quote with a minute to go, "This is just like the Chicago game last year. Hey didn't they win every other game after that?"

My hubby and I both just gave her a big hug!

But they all still need to sport pink helmets at the next practice. And nobody better get the day off to "rest."
