Fleischmann-Nylander-Semin
Bourque-Aucoin-Fehr
Brashear-Steckel-Gordon

Anyone know if this will be covered on TV anywhere???

Tarik, how many more cuts need to be made to finalize the roster?

Posted by: Capthis! | September 29, 2008 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Oh we're gonna rape NJ with that lineup...

Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Also, when Cutta get's cut, can you make a play-on-words title? Maybe "Jacub Cutta From the Teama" or "Caps Cutta One More". Just food for thought. "Caps Don't Cutta Him Any Slack."

I'll stop.

This will be an interesting line to watch tonight.None of them want to be Cutta either

Well, I'll be paying super close attention to hear how the #1 and #2 lines do tonight.

Is this game on the "actual" radio tonight, or still through caps.com?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 29, 2008 11:03 AM | Report abuse

should be a good game tonight. Shame on the NHL for not trying to show more preseason games on TV. On a good note, I finally got my tickets in the mail.

Posted by: Tim | September 29, 2008 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Speaking of which, has anyone gotten their extra STH tickets, yet? I ordered 8 tickets or so to Olie's return and to the Thanksgiving spectacular, and they haven't shown, yet. Anyone?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 29, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

When I called about my tickets they said they were way behind on sending out tickets due to the quantity of tickets being mailed out. They said they are still working on sending out all the partial plans. I would imagine they will send the extras out soon.

Cutta, Choota, Chutta, Chowda, Chooda... however you pronounce his name, I think it would be a journalistic let down if a pun was not made.

Posted by: capthis! | September 29, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

@ Drinking Partner: I haven't gotten the extra tickets I ordered either. My account rep said I should expect them at the end of Sept/beginning of October so I'm thinking they should arrive by the end of the week.

Posted by: SLM | September 29, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

When and how are they going to get under the salary cap? Who are they going to let go and how? Any ideas?

Posted by: Chris | September 29, 2008 11:30 AM | Report abuse

Starting tonight I think the games are on regular radio, since the Nats season has mercifully ended.

It does get more exciting as the roster is more and more finalized. Seeing the team start to take shape.

Posted by: Leeguru | September 29, 2008 11:34 AM | Report abuse

Chris,

Pothier LTIR, and maybe Alzner in AHL to start the season.

Posted by: Steve R | September 29, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

I concur with Steve. I haven't actually seen Alzner play, yet, but from all accounts, he sounds like he'd benefit from at least a little time spent in Hershey. I'm still hoping to see him on Friday night, though, regardless.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 29, 2008 11:43 AM | Report abuse

It better be Pothier because Jurcina and Erskine together is too horrible to contemplate.

Posted by: Chris | September 29, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

capthis!

I know I'm in the minority, but I'd rather Tarik spend more time covering the team then coming up with a bobo play on words ala the NY Post. Forgetting the fact that your little play on words isn't even that creative...it's up there with the flaming hip hip huet.

Posted by: Yosh | September 29, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

I guess the 3rd line is the possible cut line as is the 2 D- pairings

does anyone know where to find the up to date roster -- I think G. McNeil is still "up"

Posted by: capsgary | September 29, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

As stated earlier - NO preseason games are going to be on TV. They will be available on the Caps website streaming.

The games that matter are less than two weeks away, though!

Posted by: RobMonroe | September 29, 2008 11:46 AM | Report abuse

Think we should just send Jurcina through waivers and see what happens in exchange for Lepisto/Alzner (depending)?

I, personally, think that Erskine has a different value than Jurcina, which is why Jurcina's first on my cut-off list, but he's not far behind.

If we were to drop both Jurcina and Erskine right now, do we believe that we have capable replacements?

I'd say yes, due to mentioned tandem of Lepisto-Alzner, but the experience that Jurcina and Erskine bring is invaluable, when compared to L&A.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 29, 2008 11:48 AM | Report abuse

I see we have 32 left..but who are they?

Posted by: capsgary | September 29, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Chris,

It's Pothier + someone else to shed enough $ to get below the cap. Just Pothier leaves the Caps 1m over the cap.

Posted by: Steve R | September 29, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Drinking Partner,

Interesting question. The tough thing is we're tight on the cap.

Lepisto 700,000
Alzner 1,675,000
2,375,000
Jurcina 881,250
Erskine 537,500
1,418,750

We're 1m over right now. Dumping Jurcina and Erskine for Sami and Alzner puts us 2m over. Bumping Schultz to 5-6 with Lepisto might stunt his development, I'm thinking that the more minutes 55 gets the better he's going to be, and Karl would need to be 3-4 with Poti for the minutes also. Catch 22 especially with the cap crunch.

All

Nhlnumbers.com has the Caps at 2.255 over the cap and Pothier's cap hit at 2.5. If he goes on LTIR, does that take his 2.5 out because that would solve the problem, yes?

Pothiers

Posted by: Chris | September 29, 2008 12:35 PM | Report abuse

We are NOT over the cap. Do you guys really believe that the owner of this blog would be ignoring a story that big?

Posted by: Bob | September 29, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Chris,

Add Schultz salary to that total, they have him in the wrong column. We're a hair under 1m over the cap with Pothier LTIR.

Posted by: Steve R | September 29, 2008 12:41 PM | Report abuse

I think that's funny that two NHL regulars are worth less than a literal fresh-faced rookie in Alzner and a not-much-more-non-rookied Lepisto.

I seem to rememeber Sombrero saying something along the lines of starting Alzner in hershey for 5 games (or something), and starting Pothier on LTIR (on which he'll probably stay until at least January) to get us under the cap. Does anyone remember his numbers? Or can he re-inject them?

But, back to my original question, based on talent/contributions alone, would we rather have Lepisto and Alzner or Jurcina and Erskine, at least, to start the season? One other consideration that I came up with after my post way up there was that we don't have a certified "enforcer defenseman" outside of Erskine. Who else on that backline would actually fight? We don't want Mo or Green fighting for sake of injuries, Schultz and Poti aren't really fighters, and Jurcina has the size and strength, but he doesn't fight either.

I think Erskine is more important than originally assumed, don't you?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 29, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Steve

So Pothier's salary doesn't count if he is on LTIR. Ok.

How is Schultz in the wrong column?

Posted by: Chris | September 29, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Alzner starts the year in Hershey. No cap problem.

Posted by: Tim | September 29, 2008 12:48 PM | Report abuse

DrinkingPartner

I'll take Erskine the pylon over Jurcina the king of the poorly thought out cross-ice pass. Every time Jurcina touches the puck I hold my breath and/or look away until it's over. At least Erskine can bring it when he needs to. My vote- Erskine and Alzner, who seems to have composure beyond his years.

IS Jurcina on a one way or two way contract?

Posted by: Chris | September 29, 2008 12:49 PM | Report abuse

Drinking Partner,

Yep, I think Erskine will outlast Jurcina (at least for this season). Not too far down the road add Godfrey and Carlson to the mix. Both have a lot more upside than either Jurcina or Erskine and both have shown that they're willing to drop the gloves.

At this point in time, I'd lean toward Jurcina and Erskine over Alzner and Sami. Alzner needs max minutes for development, for the long term a season in the AHL might not be a bed idea. I'm not sold on Sami yet, he didn't look so good last season when he was called up. Just my opinion.

Posted by: Steve R | September 29, 2008 12:52 PM | Report abuse

The reason Alzner's cap number is so high is because its a combination of salary and all potential bonuses.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 29, 2008 12:53 PM | Report abuse

When are the last round of cuts made? The reason I ask is because I am going to the Hershey Bear pre-season game on Oct 4th and I wanted to know if Varlamov may be in goal.

Posted by: Graig From Parkville | September 29, 2008 12:53 PM | Report abuse

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=WAS

They have Alzner listed on the Caps and Schultz listed under prospects. If you swap Schultz and Alzner and then subtract Pothier's salary you come up with the Caps being roughly 720,000 under the cap.

Posted by: Tim | September 29, 2008 12:53 PM | Report abuse

@bob

We ARE above the cap by 2.255 right now. If the caps put Potheir on LTIR does that mean the caps don't have to pay any of his salary though? But as of right now we are above the cap.
Go to nhlnumbers.com. It clearly states the cap space for the caps is -2.255.

Posted by: Thomas | September 29, 2008 12:58 PM | Report abuse

@Tim - Swapping Alzner and Schultz and discounting Pothier would leave us with only 6 healthy D-men. We'd need at east 1 more, assuming that would be either Alzner or Lepisto

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 29, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Chris,

My bad, nhlscap.com has Schultz in the wrong column, thought that was who you cited. Yes, with Pothier LTIR, and Alzner starting in the AHL, we would be 250K under the cap.

Posted by: Steve R | September 29, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know if nhlnumbers.com's salary cap hit's include the buyout of Ben Clymer's contract?

Posted by: AP | September 29, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Opps, I see it at the bottom

Posted by: AP | September 29, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

To be accurate, Pothier on LTIR does in fact count against the cap. But, the Caps would be allowed to exceed the cap for the same amount that his salary puts them over.

Posted by: tallbear | September 29, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

Good point Sombrero. I didnt think of that. So it has to be Lepisto and his 700,000 salary for 7th d-man then.

Posted by: Tim | September 29, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

I think its possible that we start with 22 on the roster, and roll the same 6 d-men until a call up is needed. The Cap is calculated daily, so every day Alzner is in the AHL, we save his daily cap hit of roughly $9K. If Alzner is down in the AHL for the first 2 weeks, that would total up to a bit over $125,000 in cap savings.

McPhee has been quoted as saying we are fine with the Cap and won't have any problems. Using a full 23 man roster, and the cap hits posted on Hockey Buzz or NHL Numbers, i always find us being OVER but i'm willing to bet GMGM knows more about this than me haha

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 29, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

"Not necessarily," he said about being over the limit. "There are lots of ways to do it. It's so convoluted. We're going to be tight this year, but we'll be able to operate with the players we have. We're fine."

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/2008/08/catching_up_with_gm_george_mcp.html

GMGM is not worried about the cap, so I am not going to worry about it. I dont know why this keeps coming up.

So you think Tarik is either dumb or just incompetent for ignoring a huge story abouot the Caps and the salary cap? We are NOT over the cap according to an agent who has access to the NHL computer that keeps track of the cap for each team. I asked this question long ago and got the answer.

Posted by: Bob | September 29, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Tim, it's because people have to be worried about something. I'd rather it be this than that spirit squad nonsense

Posted by: AP | September 29, 2008 1:23 PM | Report abuse

I believe the reason we have no cap problem has to do with the bonus Feds gets. As a veteran there is a loolhole in the CBA about vets and bonues so they do not count as much against the cap. If the 4 Mill he is getting is half reachable bonues, then we are safely under the cap. Does anyone know about this loophole?

Posted by: Rich C | September 29, 2008 1:23 PM | Report abuse

That loophole is closed this year

Posted by: AP | September 29, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

@bob
I don't think Tarik is dumb at all. Looking at all the sites it says that the caps are over the cap. And if you look at one of Tarik's earlier posts it has asks the question to gmgm about being over the cap size.

Posted by: Thomas | September 29, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

While it has been fun to see the lines in preseason (and the rookies get some ice time), I will be curious to see what the lines look like for the regular season. I don't know about you guys, but I got tired of the lines constantly changing last season (all season long). At first it felt like Hanlon was desperately trying to find something (anything) that worked, and then it seemed like BB was trying to find what worked best (it is unfair that I characterize the same behavior differently for the two coaches?). Anyway, I just hope that BB knows the guys well enough this season to settle into relatively permanent lines early in the season. I think that continuity will help them develop as a team.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Daly was on NHL Live a little bit ago and discussed the loophole. The players association had until September 15th to reup on the existing CBA and the loophole would still be in place. They did not so it is not in place for this year, because there is no guarantee the CBA would be in place next season. And teams used this loophole for rollover purposes. Now the players association has an April 18th deadline to get back to the NHL as to whether or not they want to continue under the current CBA or fiddle with it a little bit. He mentioned a few of the teams that are close to the cap ceiling have salary cap specialists in place and know how to work around being right at the cap. And as you see from Tarik's article from about a week ago we have one, so there should be no worries about this issue. The end.

Posted by: Pat | September 29, 2008 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Enough of the Cap's cap issue -- is this a hockey blog for CPA's???
On a different note, I never, ever want to see the second line during the regular season. Only Nylander is a truly effective two-way forward on that line. They can shoot some rubber, but what a liability.
As for Jurinica versus Erksine -- give someone who can skate and learn to pass better than someone who is at best mediocre at his best.

Posted by: JIM | September 29, 2008 2:01 PM | Report abuse

JIM,

Interesting, they are planning on using Semin on the PK and you are saying that Nylander is the only effective two-way forward on that line. Nylander does not play on the PK nor are they wondering if he can play on the PK. His +/- was the worst on the team. Semin's wasn't far off either.

People always have to talk crap about players and yet there is nothing they can do about it. Complain all you want, BB is not looking for advice from this blog. Everyone just needs to deal with who we have and enjoy the success we get from it.

The Flyers are offering a (not signed) jersey to partial plan holders who use the card, and full STHs who pay for their tix with the card get a pair of signed chairs! (Yes, I said chairs.)

Which would you prefer??

1) All this banter of 'Are the Caps over or under the salary cap', pisses us off. The NHL should have each teams salary cap liability published daily on NHL.com.
2)Update it as it changes so we fans can understand why some moves are made. We wrote about this very issuelast month!

Posted by: Fauxrumors | September 29, 2008 2:47 PM | Report abuse

GMGM and The "Cap Master" don't seem to think that we have any cap issue. I trust the capologist a little bit more than a few guys signing onto NHL.com and researching what is says on their web-sites.

That being said, the Best players will be on the roster, if King Karl has earned his way to the capitals roster , he will be there. They will not send him to hershey just for the sake of trying to shed a cap dollar or two. If and I say if we have a salary cap problem, that can be solved be optioning a player to the minors ( The Flyers did this last year), if the player clears waivers, he would have to report, if another team claims a player, he is gone. I don't think this would happen, because I do not feel there are any issues as long as Brain Pothier is on LTIR.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | September 29, 2008 2:51 PM | Report abuse

@Boo! - I too am curious to see what the lines end up looking like, but I don't mind the frequent adjustments. I'm sure Bruce will be tweaking the lineup all season long for adjustment and playing the "hot hand" purposes.

I will ask again since the question got lost in all the Cap banter.

When is the last day of Caps cuts. When will Varlamov be sent down to Hershey? I am going to a pre season game on the 4th there and I am hoping to see him play.

Thanks

Boo,

Posted by: Egon | September 29, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

I'm not worried about the Caps being at, over, or under the cap. I was just curious because in the NFL and NBA it is pretty clear what the penalty/result of being over the cap is. I'd like to see a team roll out over the cap just to see what the response is.

This CBA is getting torn up soon anyway. At least in my opinion I hope so. It didn't work.

Posted by: Caps 423 | September 29, 2008 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Graig - regardless of when the cuts are made (and I think there will be several before Friday), the issue of whether Varlamov will play or not will likely be dependendent on his groin injury.

Posted by: SteckelFan2039 | September 29, 2008 4:01 PM | Report abuse

SteckelFan - Good point, I thought about that as well, but I thought tarik said something about the groin being ok, but the Caps just being cautious about it since Theodore and Johnson needed some work anyways.

If Bourque goes to Hershey, he and Alzner should be the first call ups. Would love to pencil in Alzner, but given salary cap and a bit of seasoning, it may be best to start in Hershey.

Leeguru:
As am I, my friend!

Sombrero:
I don't know whether to call you Laing or Ovie! ;-) Do you really play?

Steve:
Are you looking for the Devils game on TV or the WaPo blog game? (As much as I love the Caps, I would rather see the latter!! ;-))

JSchon:
Did you hook me up on the top line with Leeguru and Sombrero to make up for the circus thing? If so, it worked!! ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | September 29, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

where Alzner? He should definatly be in this line up

Posted by: gp | September 29, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

However,

I do like our D pairings. With 828 and Jschon anchoring our top two D lines, that will give our top 3 lines the ability to "Get Er Done"!!!

Don't forget that Chief is one of those Spirit girls...

Steve:
I meant online - not on TV (but that would be good, too!!)

94:
I figured JSchon would put him on the other team ... no?

Posted by: Boo! | September 29, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

94,
You're kidding right? You realize you three are going to be fighting Greenie, honed, and me for the title of best looking line, right?

Preseason doesn't mean much, but we're 4th in the EC with fewer games played than the top 3.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 29, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

No, Chief actually signed a 27 year deal with me to be on the Spirit Squad. Terms include a 8 x 10 apartment so he could leave his Mom's basement. Sobriety bc he must be taken something to come up with all this hubbub. A pink bike helmet and a bike with training wheels. I told him in 2 to 12 years, with hard work, we might be able to take those trainers off!!!

Boo, online would be most cool, but I'm guessing that I'm s.o.l.

@ JMU

Have you seen me, Sup and D in real life? I dont think a line of Swedish Bikinis models could take that from us.

Hey J,

I know I am wearing the "C" right?

Roger, pink helmet eh? Is that part of his game day spirit squad uniform?

By the way, the new Ovie-covered ESPN Mag has more hockey in it than will be on ESPN all season, so enjoy!

Old time has the joke of the day so far.....

I hope that is how you pronounce Alzner also....... :-O

@ Stevie R

Nope, the pink helmet is for Chiefy and Chiefy alone. He actually has to wear it at all times his doctor told me so I thought, heck, get the kid a bike so Flyer fans won't make fun of him

Steve:
Sorry Charlie :-(
From the NJ Devils site: "Winners of two straight, the Devils continue their preseason schedule Monday when they host the Washington Capitals
(7 p.m., No TV, live streaming audio)."
However audio will be on washcaps.com and on the radio ...

94:
You keep this up and you're going to have to sit in time out!! ;-)

Even though I'm on the top line, I can still put my foil on, right?

Posted by: Leeguru | September 29, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Sorry Boo,

I am cranky from moving all day yesterday. I have been a little on edge all day. But you need that little edge as a 4th liner. Wouldn't want people to take liberties with my star 1st line center.

@ 828 -- I was not bashing those players. I think Semin is great, I really like Nylander's play, and I'm one of the few folks who has consistently stuck up for Flash. Given these details, I still see a line that has defensive liabilities written all over it. Semin MAY turn out to be great on the PK, and I'd love to see that. Many folks have noted his tendency to fall asleep on the defensive end of his game at times, however. His career +/- bears this out. Flash is no great shakes on his backcheck, and Nylander had a horrible year in terms of +/- DUE TO A SHOULDER INJURY. His career numbers are highly +. My suggestion, put Clark, Laich, and Fehr each on a line so they have one two-way wing. Make sure Semin is paired with Nylander or Federov who both have a history of playing both ways well. I grumped about an unbalanced line -- too heavy on O, not enough D for me.

@ Jschon -- thanks for pairing up with me on the first blueline. I gotta tell you my nickname playing in college and adult leagues was postman because I invaribly ring my shots off the post when I pinch in. So you better be the Green to my Mo. I do love to check, esp. hip-checks, and clear the crease. Did I mention that I'm 6'2" 230?

@Boo! thanks for doing the research on the devils online feed. I was just about to do that myself.

And yeah I still play, but only in the Laurel beer leagues. Nothing too impressive :-)

This was kind of interesting.

http://thehockeynews.com/articles/18184-THNcom-Blog-Why-my-office-pool-team-will-win.html

Adam Proteau's fantasy team. He picked 4 Caps; AO, Green, Kozlov and Fedorov. Other teams with multiple picks are the Rangers and Chicago with 2 each.

Nice to know that Canadian hockey reporters think we have some scorers on the team. Of course this nugget and $2.70 gets you a seat on the House of Reps. Well, that's the value of the place at least.

Maybe in a couple weeks I'll work myself up to being a "healthy scratch" on the CI Bloggers team ... that's what I get for ignoring offseason workouts and not showing up for camp early. :)

Alzner will be in D.C. to start the season. He just has to be.

Good news regarding Khabibulin ... that means the Capitals will definitely face Huet in their home opener ... I hope we light up the Frenchie for about six goals.

Who was up for trading Nylander again? j/k, don't want to start that up. He seems to be doing pretty well for himself and the team tonight. Primary assists on both goals so far.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 29, 2008 8:14 PM | Report abuse

what happened to Kozlov?

Posted by: Leeguru | September 29, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

@ Leeguru
I believe Kozlov tweaked a groin, so they pulled him as a precaution.
