Tonight's lineup: Islanders at Caps

Jose Theodore will start in net tonight as the Caps go for their seventh straight win, which would match their longest winning streak under Coach Bruce Boudreau. Theodore, who ranks fourth in the league with a .922 save percentage, will oppose Dwayne Roloson in a rematch of Saturday's game on The Island, where the Caps eked out a 3-2 overtime win.

The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Laich-Morrison-Knuble
Fleischmann-Aucoin-Clark
Sloan-Steckel-Bradley
Scratch: Laing (swine flu), Fehr (ribs)

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Schultz-Pothier
Scratch: John Erskine (bruised hand)

Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov

If anything changes - Boudreau did hint that he might tweak his top two lines - I'll post an update. If not, check back later for some post game notes and quotes.

Let's play a full 60 minute game. 4-1 Caps.

I still fail to understand how their showing the wizards playing away instead of the caps playing at home. Guess it's ol' Steve Colby for me.

Headed to VC now. I'm betting the Caps got the message loud and clear. Looking forward to a strong win against a pesky Isles club tonight!

So if you have Fios what channel is CSN+ on?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | October 30, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Why does Mo play with Green? I think Poti would be better.
I think the 3rd line should be Stecks-Brads-Flash and the 4th should be Aucoin-Clark-Sloan. In fact, I think Sloan should be on D.

Posted by: jgrasse | October 30, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Win in the first two periods. Run the trap in the 3rd. C'mon Gabby. Do it.

For Va. customers of Comcast, the game is on 77 if that hasn't been said already.

Also, we'll see if Semin sees any more time on the top line tonight....

Posted by: johnzilla | October 30, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

its on csn+ cause of the Wizards game. im watching on atdhe.net cause my crappy cable company here in St Marys County doesnt have csn+.

a note on the game: Ovie has passed up 2 additional goals to pass to Semin. get him off his line now.

Posted by: DER27 | October 30, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

That was as much overpassing as I've ever seen by this group of players in one period of play.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 30, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

My channel 77 is a great big black screen. Yeah, Comcast! They've done this before in the past, what a great company. :(

Bears at Hartford tonight (Rags farm team)
2nd period just starting. Bears lead 3-0 with goals by Andrew Joudrey, Francois Bouchard, Alexandre Giroux.

Posted by: opita1 | October 30, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

this blows hardcore...why can I watch the f-ing wizards in hd and on 2 channels on HD but I can't watch the caps game...

Posted by: patrone | October 30, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

blaming Semin for Ovie overpassing lol. weak i know but Ovie had 2 point blank chances that he just dished off to Semin. frustrating.

Posted by: DER27 | October 30, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Now 4-0 Bears courtesy of Boyd Kane.

Posted by: tess2201 | October 30, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Fine, all three of the them are over-passing. Bottom line, be generous to each other when it's 6-1 not when there's 40 min still left to go.

Posted by: johnzilla | October 30, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

@wocoliz FINALLY - thank you!

its not recognized as a channel - and the description is "local origination" but it's the caps game...thank god.

Posted by: caps4life2 | October 30, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

for those in DC, if 21 doesn't work, try 79. it will get you there.

Posted by: 123xxxxx | October 30, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

It still amazes me that so many goalies don't have their sticks between their pads when they go down. It is one of the first things they teach you in goalie school and yet most NHL goalies don't do it and let in goals like Theo just did. NHL seem to have so much talent but very poor fundamentals.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

3 soft goals. 2 on Theo. 1 on Green.

The turnovers and generally sloppy play in our end and the neutral zone aren't helping the cause.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 30, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if that last goal going between 4 people is entirely Theo's fault - probably didn't even see the shot taken in the first place. The first goal he should have had. It's a little early for them to be taking the foot off the gas.

Posted by: johnzilla | October 30, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Theo should have been guarding the bottom of the net with his stick down. He was out of position.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 30, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to say it's 50/50 who wins this game at this point.

We're at home but they are more rested and have the momentum.

I imagine the Caps will start feeling fatigued in the 3rd and the Islanders will get their chances.

We should have and could have put this one away early put we overpassed and missed on several scoring opportunities.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 30, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, after seeing that replay, he wasn't where he should have been. Half the team is sleepwalking, hopefully they'll wake up in the third.

Posted by: wocoliz | October 30, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Green is worthless. That last goal was all his fault.

Posted by: Unleash_The_Caps | October 30, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

EW. If they want to be elite they shouldn't be losing to sucky teams like the Islanders. It's very troubling that they play poorly against not so good teams. Atlanta the other night, and tonight the Isles. Bad, bad, bad.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 30, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Morrison and Green both go softly for the guy behind the net and leave a guy wide open in front of the net. Theo let in some soft goals but without him standing on his head in the last two periods they don't even get a point. Caps need to learn that they need to be solid in their own end to win games in the NHL. Way too many shots against and turnovers in the last few games.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Geez, some of you really need to take a CHILL pill... they didn't just lose the 7th game of a playoff series.

they weren't gonna win every game and there will be a few more stinkers like this in the season

Posted by: joek443 | October 30, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Not sure how hard to be on the Caps since it was the second of back-to-back games with the first being away from home. If the Caps had pulled this one out they would be playing for a new winning streak on Sunday, but that's moot now. However, I thought NY deserved the win because of their effort all night long and the mainly outstsanding goal tending.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 30, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Green is worthless. That last goal was all his fault.

Posted by: Unleash_The_Caps | October 30, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

if you're referring to the OT goal, that was OV's fault if anyone is to be blamed for it... he should have stayed up high and kept an eye on the trailer but for some reason he drifted low and lost the guy

Posted by: joek443 | October 30, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

They were all watching on that last goal. It should never have gotten to overtime but it did and it's history now.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 30, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

yes it's all history now and one regular season game is no big deal but they weren't all watching... Green, Backs and ShaMo all had their men... OV was the only one drifting aimlessly in their own zone.

it's funny how Green always gets the blame for it... LOL

this is so true. anyone watching the caps can find something done good and things done poorly. it will happen EVERY game. i'd rather them lose to the isles (a team they probably feel they should beat) than to phi, bos, sj etc.
this team needs the sour taste of losing sometimes. picking apart every bad play seems like a waste of time to me. i'd rather just enjoy the fact that they'll be winning many more times than losing this year

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 30, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

what a bunch of no effort losers. did you see Ovechkin floating again on home ice on that Islanders OT GWG? he was 2 feet from taking the body on Streit.

meanwhile, the Penguins win on the road with 2 goals in the last few minutes of the 3rd period, and get the OT shootout GWG from Crosby.

That is what separates loser franchises like the Crapitals and 3 time Cup winners like the Penguins. Let's go Pens!!

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Wow did that just happen? No seriously? Did it? Yea it's one point but AGAIN I don't know what coach Boudreau has to do with drilling it into the FORWARDS heads about playing the high men in the slot. For those blaming Green on that OT goal - you don't know hockey as well as you think you do. Having played ice growing up as a kid - I played forward and those high men in the slot our the responsibility of forwards to take them out. I'm getting tired of Ovie and other forwards half assing it and not playing the high man everytime they are in the defensive zone. These guys keep talking about wanting to win a Cup but until they learn - there will be no Cup.

On that note - it's only one game and not every game is going to be pretty this year so crap out your complaints and then MOVE ON. Deep breath - feel better??? :)

Theodore after having such a beast of game didn't help himself tonight letting in a soft goal on that first one. NOT GOOD. Theo's got to be more consistent.

Defensive zone play was atrocious but yes the Isles had the better legs tonight too. Not saying the Caps playing in ATL the night before is an excuse. All teams do that. Either way it's another point and time to move forward.

The Blue Jackets are a comin and they won't be happy after the way they lost to the Pens tonight. YIKES.

Ice Breakers. Goal Shakers.

It's a bit early for that puckhead don't you think?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 30, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin not only failed to mark his man, he was actually about to head in the other direction, assuming we were going to come out with the puck.

It's simply a matter of awareness along with Bourdeau holding him responsible for playing both ends of the ice. It's not like he can't do it. My guess is the coaches are hesitant to drill it into him.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 30, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

geez, can you think of any franchise that has won 3 championships within the last 20 years in the NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL that seems to be in perpetual bankruptcy like the pens???

they couldn't pay Mario so they had to give him the team... LOL what a joke

Posted by: joek443 | October 30, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: puckheaded1 | October 30, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

@puckheaded1 - seriously grow up. It's one thing to make a point but show some class. Although having lived near Pittsburgh for 4 years - sadly I met more fans that acted like jackasses like yourself but still met plenty of Pens fans who had class.

You make your basis on one game tonight from each teams and a pretty good one too. But honestly I'll hold judgement until later this year than based on what happened in late October.

Go on someone else's board and talk trash. You're noise here is just that - noise. Buzz off.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | October 30, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

perpetual bankruptcy. is that the worst you can say about the Pens? lol. at least they know how to come out of it by building championship teams that don't choke Game 7s at home to one of their biggest rivals. hahahha

Comments on tonight:

1) Great that Flash scored

2) Why couldn't the Caps stop Neilson? Tonight's game reminds me of why I used to hate the Isles. (And I will be really annoyed if the Isles win another Cup before the Caps win won.)

3) And, of course, the Pens came back with 2 goals to tie Columbus and win in a shootout.

4) At least we get one point for the night. (Do I care if we win the Conference for the regular season? Heck no.) But I'd be thrilled if they won the Eastern Conference Finals.

i'm a Pens fan, but I like Ovechkin, because I recognize his talent (unlike Caps fans who just say "Cindy sucks bla bla bla"). AO is an amazing player. if he put 1/10 of the effort into defensive zone coverage that he puts into his goal celebrations, he'd be automatically one of the best ever. but let's be honest, no one will ever confuse him with Guy Carbonneau or Bob Gainey. (bandwagon Caps fans, feel free to look them up on the internet since you probably never heard those names before in your life)

@opita1 (On blaming Semin for everything)

My ultimate nightmare is the Caps not being able to sign Semin for next year so they trade him to the ...... Penguins at this year's trading deadline as a rental for them.

oh geez.. you think Crosby will ever win the Selke?? LOL

I guess Don Bylsma must be one of the greatest coaches ever. The Pens are winning even with Gonchar and Malkin out.

Boudreau is a good coach, certainly a vast improvement over Hanlon. (Not sure Laviolette, Michael Keenan, and all the other people suggested as possible coaches for the Caps would be an improvement.)

@puckheaded1

Yes, Carbonneau and Gainey, the management of Montreal for last year (manager and GM). Carb was a great player at one point, also.

The Canadiens certainly had enough drama for last season. Got off to a good start and then essentially self-destructed during the last half of the season.

I don't think they blame Semin for everything... but they do blame Green for every goal they score agasint the Caps

sometimes when he's not even on the ice... LOL

uh @CapsFan75, glad you recognize, but are you serious? that's like saying "yeah, Gretzky, that guy who was coaching, right?"

Carbonneau and Gainey were some of the finest defensive, shutdown forwards on Cup champions. their gigs as suits are the post scripts.

@joek443, Crosby knows where the defensive zone is. And he knows where the faceoff circle is. Try not to knee jerk boo him for once (if you can) and actually try to watch him play, you'll see he's pretty damn good at both ends of the ice.

@ puckheaded1,

I don't really care what you think but believe it or not I'm not one of juveniles on here who call Crosby Cindy or whatever else... those people annoy me too

like I said earlier I can recognize greatness even when he's not wearing a Caps jersey.. Mario Lemieux is still the best player I've ever seen play even if he was a cheap shot artist who tried to pick on guys a foot shorter than him

Also I've always been one of the very few on here willing to criticize OV for his defensive plays and been advocating putting him on the PKs on occasion.

Posted by: joek443 | October 31, 2009 12:02 AM | Report abuse

but comparing OV or Crosby to Carbonneau and Gainey is just plain stupid... their main job was preventing goals, they could never score like Ov in their widest dreams.

um @joek443 it's called using an illustrative example to make a point. duh. of course no one would want talents like those completely abandoning their natural gifts to focus on other dimensions.

btw yzerman and modano (not to mention mario and sid) were huge point producers earlier in their careers. but only once they started playing more balanced hockey and tying up a stick once in a while did they really start to win championships.

hey you don't have to tell me that twice... I've said on here more than one occasion that Mario was the best and most dangerous PKer I've ever seen and some people make fun of me for that.

the key is ovechkin. the team will follow his lead. once he shows some defensive effort, the others will follow him, and then the team might start to get to the next step. but as long as he floats with half assed efforts, they'll keep getting outworked and having disappointing games like tonight.

Well, if Crosby is the perfect NHLer according to you, puckheaded, why doesn't he hit more?

Posted by: dfe1 | October 31, 2009 12:37 AM | Report abuse

And please stop acting like Ovi never plays any defense. You're acting like someone who doesn't watch Ovi and only goes by what Ovi-haters put on youtube.

I'll ask it again, would Ovi win the Pearson if he didn't play any defense?

BTW, I'm not a Crosby basher--I just don't think Crosby is that much better than Ovi at defense.

Posted by: dfe1 | October 31, 2009 12:40 AM | Report abuse

since when does being a hitter make you the best NHLer? was gretzky a great hitter? was mario a great hitter? was sakic a great hitter? was yzerman a great hitter? is datsyuk a great hitter? was francis a great hitter? hitting has a place in the game, but all these forwards do so many things so well, and hitting is not at the top of that list, yet they all have CUPS.

Crosby does pretty much everything BUT deliver a huge hit. but he knows WHEN to make a hit to make a difference, and doesn't do it just for the sake of doing it. there's your difference. it's about paying attention to the little things/details that make a difference, the faceoff win, the check, the tied-up stick, blocking a shot, the pass, not the big showoff hit.

the most complete forward who did hit was probably Forsberg. (and Howe.) but look at the toll that took on Forsberg. meanwhile, Sakic racked up points over many many seasons. OV pretty much is a great hitter, a goal scorer without peer, but that's pretty much it.

@puckhead, you still haven't responded to why Ovi won the Pearson if he's so horrible at defense? Don't you think these NHL players would say, well, Ovi's a great player but he doesn't play any defense so how can he be the most oustanding NHL player?

Posted by: dfe1 | October 31, 2009 1:14 AM | Report abuse

And I forgot to add that Ovi doesn't hit just for hitting's sake. How many times does a big hit energize a team? Sorry, but you're not going to get me to believe that Crosby is a god.

Posted by: dfe1 | October 31, 2009 1:16 AM | Report abuse

b/c a lot of times awards are just popularity contests, and AO is a flashy player who gets - and deserves - a lot of attention that he gets. however, doing a lot of little things right doesn't make highlights on sportscenter. people who know and follow fundamentals of hockey know and usually appreciate what crosby does on a regular basis.

i can't believe anyone would be silly enough to take any kind of position that Ovi plays good/great defense. Streit's OT winner last night was Exhibit A. and I've been to many games in person last year, it was pretty apparent where Ovi's strengths and not-so-strengths were.

Posted by: puckheaded1 | October 31, 2009 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Have you been to any games this year? Like I said before, you can't focus on one mistake and extrapolate it out to the whole season. I never said Ovi was a great defensive player, but he has definitely improved so far this year. And I've never heard anyone rave about Crosby's defense.

And sorry I don't buy that they gave Ovi the Pearson just because he's popular (which he is). So when Crosby won it, was it because he was popular or did he deserve it? I'm going to guess that you think he deserved it, so that year, they gave it to who deserved it, but when Ovi wins, it's a popularity contest?

Perhaps the players know that Ovi could be better at defense, but when they look at everything else he does, they must feel that it's at a much higher level than everyone else that it more than compensates for his defensive abilities.
