Tonight's lineup: Islanders at Caps
Jose Theodore will start in goal tonight as the Caps look to win their third in a row. Dwayne Roloson, meantime, will get the nod for the depleted Islanders.
While the Caps won't have Alex Ovechkin, a thin New York lineup will be missing Kyle Okposo (swine flu), Doug Weight (upper body), Radek Martinek (knee) and Blake Comeau (ill).
The rest of the Caps' lineup should look like this:
Forwards
Fleischmann-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Clark-Perreault-Fehr
Laing-Steckel-Bradley
Scratches: Ovechkin, Gordon
Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Erskine-Pothier
Scratches: Sloan, Schultz
Goalies
Theodore
Varlamov
I'll have more later.

Hi, all--
I have upcoming travel to conferences in Prague and Rome and am wondering where would be a good spot to watch the Caps on live TV. Any suggestions for a late-night sports bar in Prague or Rome?
Posted by: jhershb | November 11, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse
Been to Prague three times and can only remember seeing one sports bar. I think it was on Wencesles Square which is the main drag. Places will be open well after midnight so no problems there although after a few "Pivos" you'll probably end up forgetting about the game want to find a club. Try the Lavka, just by the Charles Bridge - on the new town side. Had some great nights in that dive.
Can't help with Roma, just stay away from any Lazio football (soccer) fans.
Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | November 11, 2009 5:16 PM | Report abuse
Hmm... Would have been a perfect game to sneak a start for Varlamov, IMO. Boudreau seems to always start Varly in the toughest games against the top teams.
Anyway, let's go, Caps.

@jhershb
As for where to watch the game abroad I'd say your best bet is your own laptop in the hotel room if their wifi doesn't suck (which it usually does).
Other places in Italy that show NHL games and wouldn't immediately come to mind are various sports betting parlors. They're basically rooms with a bunch of TV's, no furniture of any kind (so you'd have to stand the entire time) and full of the shadiest characters you'll ever see most of whom are there all day pissing their money away of various horse and dog races.

tominfl1-thanks for the link.
Boy, did that story get swept under the rug and ignored like no story I can think of in recent memory. Why plea bargain with someone like that unless he's giving the authorities someting in return. Maybe a quite mouth? I hope not but what else could the plea be for?

I have no idea why they scratched Sloan. I think hes been one of our most solid D-men lately.

@riddler1-supplier(s) and other dealers for example. I don't believe in conspiracies--if there is something relevant it will come out at some point. I would be surprised if there was anything to report from the hockey side.

thanks also for the steroid story link. The reporter at least has been told that the authorities have not been able to verify the man's claims--so either the police are spreading disinformation or really can't verify his claims, particularly as he apparently can't name any individual players.

Chris Bourque stats this year are not very impressive to date: 10 games played, 1 assist and -3 +/-. Not sure how much ice time he is getting (though it seems about 8 minutes a game) but he does not seem to be ready for playing full time in the NHL.

Varly getting better with the glove hand? For a seriously depleted Islanders team they look dangerous every time they get the puck in our zone. We need to step it up defensively, we look a little slow there to me.

rachel216, I think it's a parody of the doom and gloom you sometimes see here. Like after this game maybe.
Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 11, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse
Does Theodore get an assists on the Islanders 1st goal? That was terrible rebound control on a soft shot.
Seriously, though, beyond that one play, our collective team defense was piss poor.
Our defense was worse than Theodore... by far.
We seem to give up the blue line so easily. I almost wonder if that is deliberate because of the lack of speed on our defense.
Semin should have 2 goals. As it stands, he scored 1 then gave 1 back with a horrible turnover.

I think our Chicken LIttle is finding irony in the comments here that could be put in the light of going off the deep end with the comments on what some could see as the slightest problem/error/misjudgement on the part of the Caps players, management etc. I get a chuckle out of it but it won't be everyone's cup of (chicken) soup.

Two great plays by Green on 3rd and 4th goals. First play was obvious, but it was his steal and pass to Clark that got the Fehr goal started.
Theo was a butcher on the 1st goal. Killed the momentum. I wanted him yanked then.
Semin - Charles Dickens in Tale of Two Cities - "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times." Fortunately tonight mostly the best. Has two, could have 4 or 5 tonight.
Did anyone else see Brads late in the second "try" the curl and drag? Ha! It was the worst of times on that one!

How about it for next season?
If the shootout goal is your 3rd goal of the game, its the Ovie hat trick and it counts for your stats?

Why doesn't BB use Knuble? He would be my first choice.
And mark my words. Theo would have let in 3 on the first 3 shots. He was terrible in the last few shootouts.

Varly would've out kicked Roloson anyway. But we'll take the W this way without the Rochambeaux. LOL

Was it sinkingcaps wondering why Clark is in the lineup? Another assist and the game winning shootout goal. I guess question answered.

Somebody posted this morning that the Caps would win either 6-2 if Varly started or 5-4 if Theo started and it "would be difficult."
I think that was SinkingCaps.

I propose NO Clark-bashing for at least the next 24 hours.
Cardiac Caps, indeed--but a win is a win, and I'll definitely take the two points!
Varly for first star!

First place caps...but no doubt some complainers tomorrow cause they didn't blow out the isles. If he's still alive, chicken little will be active tomorrow.

count me as one of the Clark bashers. That was the first good thing he's done all year - but I'll take it!

Varly has a huge potential and is hardworking and mature for his age. At ~19 years of age he played with big guns in Russia and sure it's not NHL but underestimating it would be just plain stupid.
Theo had a bad game and he will bounce back! Varly will backup him ) As they said: "we play for one team and we care about this team winning, not our stats!"

Not to rain on the parade, but the third period penalties are not a good trend (even though I thought that the boarding call on Jurcina was weak.
Posted by: zmega | November 11, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse
penalties on the caps = boo.
what else is there to say? The NHL should have a month with no Refs. that'd be sweet.

Three penalties to none in the third equals Caps outworked.
Posted by: FloridaCapsFan
It was ten shots to ten shots in the third so I guess I have to take that back. Except for the second period the Isles were pressing pretty good I thought.

Well Varly sure made a statement tonight. I expect BB will start him on Friday. I hate shootouts but that sure was an exciting--not sure my nerves could handle too many endings. The two penalties back to back so late in the third made me want to bash my head into the wall. But I think the Islanders are an undervalued team.

Was that a late boarding call on Jurcina because Parks went down? I didn't see it at first during the play.

according to Joe B. during the telecast, Varly was scheduled to start the friday game regardless
