Tonight's Lineup: Lightning at Caps

Jose Theodore will start in net tonight and is expected to oppose Mike McKenna as the Caps go for their 10th straight win over the Bolts. Alexander Semin (flu), Donald Brashear (sprained knee) and Jeff Schultz (healthy) are out. The rest of the lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Fedorov-Fehr
Fleischmann-Backstrom-Kozlov
Nylander-Aucoin-Laich
Osala-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Erskine-Pothier

If anything changes, I'll post an update after warmups.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Wow: Nylander-Aucoin-Laich

Talk about getting put in your place. Nylander gets the wing while a Hershey call-up takes his spot in the middle.

yay Osala! Let's light McKenna up tonight! wooo! GO CAPS!

Watching college hockey on ESPN2, hoping Miami pulls off a couple of upsets and makes it to the frozen four here at VC

Posted by: doncosmic | March 27, 2009 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Semin is certainly having all kinds of health issues at the moment. A fan had posted a comment on this blog (on Sunday's entry) that he's been limping since the Florida game. And now Tarik has confirmed that info.

And he's been sick since at least Sunday. Health-wise, maybe he had no business playing against Toronto. Did he relapse or what? Or was it one of those things where he thought he was okay that morning (Tuesday) but he really wasn't.

To all the people who say Semin will sit out for any excuse, Tuesday night was proof that he was playing both sick and hurt at the same time. Hurt since last week. Sick since Sunday. (Although sick is the bigger issue at the moment.)

Anyway, rest up, Sasha.

From "On Frozen Blog" about Koharski, pretty funny

After a 6-1 loss to the Boston Bruins in the Wales Conference Finals in 1988, New Jersey Devils Coach Jim Schoenfeld had a few things to say to Koharski. Schoenfeld blocked Koharski's exit from the ice to "inform" him of how he had basically given the game to Bruins. Koharski wanted nothing of it and began to walk to the official's dressing room and took a tumble, much like a toddler does.

Presumably unhappy with the situation and looking for someone to blame it on, Koharski pointed an accusatory finger at Schoeny. Stan Fischler had perhaps the best recounting of the situation in his book, Pain and Progress: "Oh, you're gone now! You're gone. You won't coach another..." shouted Koharski.

Schoeny shot back, "You fell and you know it. You know you fell. I didn't touch you."

Koharski: "You're gone. You're gone. And I hope it's on tape."

Schoenfeld: "Good, 'cause you fell you fat pig. Have another doughnut."

Uh oh, Pat Sajak saying the Caps and the Blue Jackets in the finals...

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 5:51 PM | Report abuse

Feds was still sick earlier this week.

I hope he cranks it up a notch down the stretch, and gets going in the playoffs. I want him to retire at 1.00 PPG for his playoff career!

Posted by: greener1 | March 27, 2009 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Rest up, Sash. We're gonna' need you for the playoffs so let's do this! Let's GOO Caps! Good luck to Aucoin and Osala! Have a great game, guys!

My repost to remember Tom::

Are the Caps going to honor the sudden passing of Tom Newman tonight? He was singularly critical to the creation of the Kettler Capitals Iceplex In Ballston.

Here is his obit from today's paper:

@landshark, I have no idea what the Caps are going to do tonight, but as a graduate of Yorktown highschool and long time arlington resident I know that Tom will be missed. (Miami redhawks 1-0 btw)

does anyone have a link to tonights game?thanks.

Posted by: just_call_me_shell | March 27, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

CapsFan75,

Your Semin proof depends on other player's on the team not being equally sick and injured and playing anyway. We can not know that one way or the other.
Let's just wait a few years and see how it goes.(If they don't trade him first)

Posted by: OldFan | March 27, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

OldFan...well you are just that old fan. Theres absolutly no way semin is getting traded, hes been argubly the hardest working player on this team for the past 2 months. He has been winning battles for loose puck in the corners, setting up guys on PP with awsome pases, working hard on PK and most importanly winning us games.
Youre absolutly out of your mind if you seriously think that hell get traded.

I think that www.hockeystreams.com will have the game on. It looks like you have to register for it though I didn't have to pay for it. I have never used it so I can't vouch for it yet.

HOT STICK

Posted by: kevbnyc | March 27, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I was not impressed with that 5 on 3

Posted by: opita1 | March 27, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Fehr can't finish again.. what's new?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

I was impressed...was a shooting gallery it just kept hitting traffic. MOSTLY hitting Laich too just unlucky. Kozzy could have buried it early too...

Posted by: mauree | March 27, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Russian Machine hit you harder than you hit him.

mauree-
The stream doesn't seem to work.

Posted by: mikesfan | March 27, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

DaveTheCaps,
I just think that those shots were so obvious the D and goalie had them all covered without moving.

Theo has made some good saves so far.

Posted by: opita1 | March 27, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

You won't like Russian Machine when he's angry!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Ovi was annoyed the Lighning guy got angry he got a clean hit on Ovi and Ovi got him back. That sigh was funny
:)

Posted by: austinsteve | March 27, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Rachel,
yes, but they were not of very good quality. The goalie and the D just covered most of the goal. There was no movement. But that is just my opinion.

Posted by: opita1 | March 27, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

This better be a great win cause no game till Wednesday.. :(

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

That one works.

Posted by: mikesfan | March 27, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

They couldn't have been that obvious, the one wrister Green faked Mckenna out so bad he was already sliding over to cover a one timer from Ovie...Green's shot hit Laich in front I believe. I know Laich got nailed 2 or 3 times on that PP might have scored earlier hahaha. Didn't see how bad Kozzy's angle was either on his chance, maybe should have scored.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Nylander and Pothier signed big contracts a couple of years back. And it has been reported that after this season, Nylander will be bought out. As for Jeff sitting out, I like the idea of Erkshine playing wing on the 4th line and keeping the D together.

Was that an OV pass? It seemed like a good looking pass from the replay.

Posted by: opita1 | March 27, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Definitely a pass...but he has no play-making skills at all I read that somewhere.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Yeah OV, the D was in position for his slapper

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Backie, is not too fast, is he?

Posted by: opita1 | March 27, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Wow Nyl's nice try there...great rush/pass from Backie to set that up again (shocker I know)

Oh Nyles!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Ovie 3 points already.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

A for Alex. Put a body in front and he IS a playmaker.

Posted by: kevbnyc | March 27, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

It is noce to see Backstrom get his 20th and Flash score as well. Semin and Green will get their 30th next game. Semin on a average per game has a point total of about 1.3-4 and that puts in the top 10.

Posted by: jgrasse | March 27, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Also Backstrom to 20 goals on the season...Backie and Green both with 2 points.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

congrats backstrom.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Flash on #18. Can he break 20 for the end of the regular season.... :)

Posted by: austinsteve | March 27, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I still think Backs tapped that 2nd one with his stick before it hit Flash's skate. He certainly reacted like he felt it hit his blade. Maybe it hit Flash's skate after. Oh well works either way.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Thats funny Flash says " I don't even know if that was mine, I think it hit Backstrom after me" haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Be nice to see if the game settles down a little to more 5 on 5 (although it doesn't look like Tampa is going to stop with the extra stuff) if we can lock it down and dominate at even strength as well.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

we are dominating on even strength. we drew the penalties for a reason. at least ovechkin's and backstrom's.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Yeah just lately we have seem to get bogged down when we weren't getting a lot of PP chances. You're right though Phil in that the penalties have been desperate on their part because we've been breaking them down 5 on 5.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

That 2nd line has looked strong.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Granted, Backstrom's was on a 4on4.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

I was just saying how Flash and Backstrom seem like a good match. They play the same style.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Just all the more credit to Backstrom and allows people to see he doesn't only look good because he feeds Ovie. The guy makes everyone around him better.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Osala draws a penalty...that kid is pretty big.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Wow Backstrom set it up on a silver platter for Greenie.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Bears at Binghamton tonight. Middle of the second period, Bears lead 3-0 on goals by Wilson, Alzner and Bourque. Neuvirth in goal.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 27, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

that was a sick move by Erskine, too bad offside. I'm sure he would have gone top shelf

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

@Moose

Hahahahahahahaha. Back in Lumberjackville they call that move the "Erskine"

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Um...no idea how that's not a call unless they just feel bad for Tampa like Grapes. They've had a tough year we'll just give them one or two.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

So Semin, OV, Green, Backs each have 20+ goals, and Flash with 18. Almost 5 with 20+!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

i think they didn't call it since there was some embelishment

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Now 4-0 Bears.
Goal by Alex Giroux, his 52nd of the season. (Keeping pace with Ovi!) The Bears record for most in a season is 53 so hopefully Alex with catch that and pass it with 8 games left in the season.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 27, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

That was not over-passing Locker...I liked the idea from Poti just good D stick work.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

@rachel

Not so fast Backie has 21 now. But don't forget Laich has 19 I think.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

So Semin, OV, Green, Backs each have 20+ goals, and Flash with 18. Almost 5 with 20+!!!

laich has 19 too.

They took the goal from Flash, he can't catch a break!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I thought Poti should have shot that. He was wide open. He had the best scoring opportunity.

damn ludeman. you called it dave. poor flash. go backstrom. he is now 9th in the league in points, 1 from 8th.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

I thought Poti would shoot it...but if that pass gets through Nylander has half the net wide open on the one timer and he actually looked like he was going to shoot it with no circles.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Oh Flash.

Btw that play right there...Green is a liability defensively right?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

@Moose

in the 1st Smaby tried to run over Ovie and bounced off...later in the sequence when he was clearing it Ovie just crushed him against the boards.

Now this isn't a shot on Theo, but I think Varly doesn't stare at the puck there like Theo did, Varly is very quick to get back to his feet.

I don't know if that's when he got hurt because he played for awhile after that...but that's when I saw Ovie give him a good hit.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

ludeman95: Agreed.. after he gave up the rebound he just knelt there at watched... (and again I AM NOT bashing Theo) I know people will say I am crazy but if Varly played a game in the playoffs he would do well, like ludeman95 said, he is quick and very athletic. I can't see Varly giving up a goal like that one before the second period ended.

@phil

I love it

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Bah NJ tied it 1-1

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

I love that pic...Ovie gives Osala the nudge. "Listen up kid..."

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Where are you guy and gals getting your jerseys from? I've wanted a Backstrom jersey for 2 years now and haven't shelled out the dough to get it yet. Today while we were at Kettler we walked over to the Proshop and they had three of his jersey there but the one in my size was messed up. The name on the back was crooked. I might be a perfectionist but if I'm going to put out $175, I want it right. I've watched them do the screen printing at the VC and they seem like they do a good job measuring and making sure everything is lined up right.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

You may hate his rebound control but he's stoned St. Louis at least twice now.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Wow we just caught a HUGE break.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Theo is all over the place... leaving the net WIDE OPEN.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

@ludeman95
I got my Fedorov jersey at VC and I'm happy with it.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 27, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

can you say weird?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Somehow no trip call there either.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

I think Mo shouldered that one in.

give me varly

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

theo has looked very good and very bad....

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

It would help if his D men stop deflecting shots on the way in very odd manners.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

soft goal. Theo is so inconsistent, It boggles the mind.

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 27, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Nice shot Pothier. Now they need to pour it on and close this game out.

Posted by: spacecadetkid | March 27, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Congrats Pots!!!!!

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Good for him!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

I want to see more replays of their 3rd goal...pretty sure that deflected off Mo's arm or shoulder and if so that's not a soft goal.

Backs back on Ovie's line.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Osala calling for the puck there. I like the confidence whatever Ovie said to him is working.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

God what a great setup there! That 3rd line has been playing great offensively.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

dude, Juice is hitting tonight and I like it

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Ok ice this now.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Devils up 2-1 after 1st. Come on Hawks help us out.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

This one is for Pots. Slirrrrrrrrrrrrppp!

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 27, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Moose: Juice always hits! It's Schultz that doesn't hit, well, Schultz doesn't do anything except screen own goalie.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

per John Walton...

Grand Rapids at Norfolk -- referee Chris Cozzan took a skate blade to the neck. missed the jugular by about an inch. he's at the hospital now, going to survive, thank God. Saying a prayer for him.

@tess

jeez

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

rachel, he does but more so this game. At least 4-5 big hits I've seen

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

They should wear turtlenecks.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

You think about it though, it's crazy that kind of stuff doesn't happen more often with the bodies flying everywhere.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Ovie and Fed just playing catch out there.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

artuyhkin slew footed pothier.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I'm glad Nick's faceoffs are getting better.

Thoughts & prayers are with Cozzan. Do you think they might start insisting on neck guards for officals and/or players? I heard the current models are uncomfortable, but two incidents in a little over a year?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 27, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Ice this now. Funny how if his own D men aren't deflecting the shot Theo shuts them down.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

can you bleed a little for us greenie? just a little

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Stupid Prospal

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

CRAP...thought that was Laich's 20th.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

There was lots of talk about neck guards after the Zednik incident but it never amounted to anything. I cringe everytime I see a pile-up of bodies because of the possibility of an injury from a skate.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 27, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

WOW are you kidding me????? THAT IS INTERFERENCE???

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

GARBAGE CALL!!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

yuo sc1907 was right, OV doesn't back check...

are you kidding me? what's the call?

Posted by: Moose33 | March 27, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Wow, CRAP call! Nylander brushed Mckenna, barely even TOUCHED him. wow. thanks for taking Laich's goal away.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Wait, are they talking about touching "contact" or Nylander was close enough to see McKenna's "contact"? Geez.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 27, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Unreal this game should be iced already. Laich's 20th and Ovie's 4th point nullified.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

The damn TB d-man was pushing him into the goalie

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy is on fire down in Hershey! 46/46!! First shutout for Neuvy. GO NEUVY!!! :)

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Bears win 4-0.
Neuvirth gets the shutout with 47 saves.
Bears clinch a playoff spot.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 27, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

He had already made the initial save after him and Nylander weren't "touching" anymore. Terrible call. I hope they remember that one come playoff time...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Wait...maybe we are being a bit hasty???

Nylander might have let one go...the ref heard it?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Whats up with all the wash-out goals lately? The Flyers would never get a goal if that amount of contact was enough to wash out a goal.

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 27, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

There has been some...interesting...referee decisions tonight. As many PP's as we've had we should have had at least 2 more...and that wash out call was just ridiculous.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Good job Neuvy!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 27, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Been watching the game at a bar out in Fairfax. Just got home and CSN is freezing every 15 seconds on my TV....'

Grrr.....

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | March 27, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Oh sorry, 47 saves! I love Neuvirth.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 27, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Wow! That has got to be the loudest "Refs you s*ck!" chant I have heard in the Verizon Centre this season! (I agree, Laich had that clean!)

Go Caps!

3 points it magic number. Let's go Chicago!

4 point night, 100 for the season. Wish Backie had gotten the hat trick.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

SOLID WIN, LET KEEP IT UP!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

6 points behind Malkin with 2 less games played. It's possible.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 27, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

We could get the east conf. lead in the last game like we got the southeast lead last year. Only 3 pts. behind Boston????

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 27, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else sick of that Filet-o-fish ad?
